At ttis time we had no indication that an enemy attack r:as in progress other than tr·e sl-:eJ.line; c'e had received earlier.

At 0100 l Sep I finally contacted Company F who info:rmed me of the enemy attack and alf.o, Vat tLey then 'ere in tLe vieinity of our Heavy i0lortar Corapany, h1:1ving b<cen forced to v1ithdmw due to the enemy's assault. After this I had no ftu·tbnr contact wlatsoever.

hundred yarc;s of tE:rri tor:r, r1e obrsrved several enemy groups at point 11 b. 11 on overlay but, due to tr-e quietness and orderliness of our group, were not detected and continued on our \'Jc.y.

At approximately 05301 Sep, as the sky began to lighten, we ran into what I estimated to be a battalion of enemy moving along the road at 'point 11B11 on the overlay. '.I.hey did not see us so I immediately proceeded to look for a place to hide my men and avl<:d t tl:e hours of darkness before continuing. This was accomplisbed by ha.ving the :nen crawl under small bushes on the side of the hill tbu. t 71e were on, point 11 C11 , and making use of every a vnilable bit

·of camouflage tba t wu.s possible to find.

The men in our group camouflaged themselves in a superior manner for, although v1e coulo observe enemy moving back and forth throughout the hours, it rJas not until 1400 before ··~e were discovered by a small enemj gro,up and fired upon. After a few minutes this enemy group moved on and, knowing full well t'ha t he vwuld return reinforced, I decided to move from this position and continue on untit such time as I either found friendly forces or was 'forced to engage otl:er enemy groups in 'TiitbdlU"'Iil\'?' my sma.ll but :beroic group to the rear. By this time tl:e men v1ere very tired raving been exposed to the terrific bekt of tt.e do.y and also no L'ood and water for many hours. Individual small arms am.nmnition ·.:as V(~ry low.

From this position we proceeded to tte near top of Hill 206.6. llt .. this point I noticed t·hl t three of our ps.rty were missing, one of them bein~; Capt Hastings. m-·ere they bad gotten to or V/rat J:.ad happened to tl•em I did net know and neither was I able to find out "from the group.

Upon res.cl-1irl(;: Eill 206.6 anc· feeling very convinced that the enemy Vli:\S

watching our every move and find:i_p..g Eill 20G.6 uqoccupiec1 by the enemy I decided to move on. ~'lhile procecd:l_ng doYm the southemslope of Eill 206.6, we came across a group of approximately 35 men from our 1st Battalion. Organ-

·. izing t:he two groups into two platoons we moved on across Obong-ni Ridge along the route as shown on the overlay. Finally and thanlr..fully we reached friendly forces in tbe vicinity of Yong-san at about 2100 hours. During this period we encountered only O?e si.t'.gle enemy whom we eradi~ted.

Despite the terrific strain tJ-e 1l:Ianchu' men with this group kept themselves cool and collected. They obeyed orders to the very best of their ability and, i.n u.ll movements, were well disciplined and orderly and pre.[Y.ned for wl~a tevsr destiny my have r·ad in store for them.
