The Local Government Commission announced last week that there will be an election for amalgamation. Would you vote for amalgamation?

Denise Teal, Richmond.

“In some ways it would be bet-ter for them to work together to save man power but then does that mean people’s jobs? I’d have to look more into it.”

Bradley Golding, Richmond.

“I don’t really know enough about it. It doesn’t really worry me.”

Steve Robinson, Richmond.

“I would certainly vote for amalgamation. It certainly works.”

Fiona Peterson, Richmond.

“I haven’t thought about it to tell you the truth. I own my own house so I definitely will be voting.

paying just over a year ago. When the Wrights took over the village seven years ago the price was $50 per month.Residents of Waimea Village own their homes and fully paid for the lease of their land up front, they also pay normal coun-cil rates, insurance, power and all other the normal living costs. The lease payments they make to the Wrights are for services, including rub-bish collection, common area mainte-nance and a courtesy coach. The proposed increase was prepared by WHK partner John Murray.Waimea Village is not a retirement vil-lage, which means its residents do not get protection under the Retirement Village Act 2003 – something Nelson list MP Maryan Street is trying to fix with a pri-

vate members bill in an attempt to stop the massive lease increases residents have been facing. TDC councillors Kit Maling and Judene Edgar are promising to help the residents fight the increase, but with the Wrights sending it to the arbitrator it will make it more difficult as results of that process are secret. Both told Waimea Week-ly that what the Wrights was doing was “just plain wrong”. If Michael and Carolyn are successful in raising the lease payments again, the payments would have increased by more than 400 per cent in a little over a year.Inflation is running at less than 4 per cent.In the new lease proposal, Michael and

Carolyn are claiming $70,000 for a man-ager’s salary, another $66,753 for admin-istration, $21,008 for living costs and $9060 for car lease payments. Other costs include $340,249 for repairs

and maintenance, a fair chunk of that is to fill the coffers of a “repair and maintenance sinking fund”. The fund is not pro-tected, so Michael and Carolyn could poten-tially walk away with the

money in the fund if they sell the prop-erty, leaving residents vulnerable to any repairs, despite already paying for them. Since the Wrights bought the Village sev-en years ago, there have been few repairs completed, certainly nothing anywhere near the level they are claiming they need for future repairs.

Two hundred and nineteen speed related of-fences were issues over the long weekend as lo-cal police cracked down on speeding.Tasman District Police were out in force over Waitangi weekend enforcing the lower 4kph speed tolerance.Highway patrol team leader Stu Wright says “generally everyone was well behaved” with a lot of traffic on the road. “There were a number of persons who were issued with infringement no-ticed,” he says.Stu says half of the infringement notices issued were under the “old tolerance level.”The highest reported speed was more than 130kph.Tasman District road policing manager inspec-tor Jenni Richardson says it was part of the na-tional Safer February road policing campaign, police would also breath tested every driver stopped and checked for seatbelt use.

Amalgamation finds support in TasmanThe battle lines have been drawn and it appears some of Tasman’s most influential people are firmly on the side of supporting an amalgama-tion of the Tasman District and Nelson City councils. The boss of the region’s largest transport compa-ny says he is supportive of an amalgamation, as is deputy chair of Tasman’s most important project, the Lee Valley Dam.At least five Tasman District councillors – in-cluding Richmond’s Kit Maling and Glenys Glover – are breaking ranks with their mayor in supporting an amalgama-tion as well.Last Tuesday the Local Government Commission announced it was proceed-ing with plans to amalgamate the coun-cils. It is now up to voters in both regions to either accept or reject the proposal.TNL chief executive Jon Kyle says deal-ing with two councils is cumbersome and he believes the business community will benefit greatly from a merger.TNL headquarters is based in Richmond but it has two of its businesses based in Nelson. He says it is frustrating having to speak with two councils when dealing with one would be a much more effective way to do business. He also says the bar-gaining power of a joint council would be a huge asset for lobbying central government on trans-port issues, like new roads. The addition of the Rural Advisory Committee has also had an influence in swinging some rural voters across says deputy chair of Tasman’s vi-tally important Lee Valley Dam project.

Waimea Water Augmentation Committee depu-ty chair and farmer Julian Raine says he is sup-portive of amalgamation if it delivers better value for money to ratepayers. “I farm in both Nelson City and Tasman so I’m in a unique position and there is frustration where there isn’t a commonality of rules. It seems bi-zarre to have duplicate services when collectively we aren’t an area of 90,000 people.”He says representation is another issue but as long as representatives are effective and have the power to make decisions then there should not

be a problem. “I hope we can get rid of some parochialism in the debate, some people are saying ‘we don’t want it’ with-out knowing the facts and that’s what really concerns me. I hope the true facts get out there.”Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne told Waimea Weekly yesterday that rep-resentation was still an issue and it is no surprise businesses are supportive of an amalgamation. “Many business people

have been for amalgamation for a long time. It’s a simplified process for business people to work under. But I still think the big issue is representa-tion, is one council going to make it better? I can still see the value in two councils representing two areas.”Aldo Miccio, who started the amalgamation pro-cess in 2010, says he has had huge support for amalgamation since the decision was made.“With the release of this amalgamation model, I hope that the parochialism and patch protection will finally stop and we can have the informed debate that this issue deserves. We finally have a chance to realise our potential.”

Don and Merle Fraser certainly have plen-ty of love to share. The Richmond couple recently spent their 65th wedding anniver-sary at their honeymoon spot in Akaroa, a near parallel universe from Don’s volun-teer counselling work where he has turned around the lives of heroin addicts and sui-cidal schizophrenics.Don and Merle’s daughter paid for the cou-ple to visit Akaroa for their blue sapphire wedding. Everyone had rung around saying how special the anniversary was so when they arrived in Akaroa, they had two free din-ner vouchers at top restaurants, a free boat trip to see the dolphins and seals and a free trip into the Giants House. “It was just lovely and they were so good to us,” says Merle.Don says the owners of the Wilderness House, where they first spent their hon-eymoon, had remembered them from their 60th anniversary and had struck up a friendship with the couple.Merle says “it’s amazing” to reach the mile-stone. “We’ve worked hard all our lives. It’s a dream really to do it.”Don always tries to do something special for the anniversary and he says the 65th definitely had to top everything else. “The next special one will be 70 if we ever get there.”They remember the 1947 wedding like it was yesterday, down to the final detail. The wedding was at the Church of Christ

in Gisborne and Merle was right on time. Her mother sold the organ to pay for it.They originally wanted to get married in Wellington, but the family wanted them to return home for the occasion. The newlyweds were quick to skip town though and headed south for their hon-eymoon. Don’s sister lived in Okains Bay, over the ridge from Akaroa, and could not make it to the wedding. So Don and Meryl decided to make the trip from Gisborne to the South Island. It was a two-day trip to Akaroa, through ferry, buses and mail cars to finally arrive at their destination. The homestead they stayed at was called the Wilderness in 1947 and Meryl laughs that it “was a wilderness” back then too. Don has been a volunteer counsellor most of his life and brought home drug addicts and schizophrenics for the couple to look after. “People hadn’t been loved. We just love them to bits and they’d come right,” says Merle. One girl had been in care for eight years, following the suicide of her own mother, but she was helped in just nine months with the Frasers. Another was a heroin ad-dict given only three weeks to live. But he survived.Don admits the toughest time in their marriage was losing their daughter to skin cancer when she was only 33 years-old. “That was the hardest thing we’ve ever had to handle.”Don previously worked in the government service for 18 years, in the post office. Mer-

le used to be a nurse, getting paid just five pound six pence a month. They have always had a united faith for God, so it was no surprise to hear that they first met at a church in Wellington. “I said I hated him when I first saw him because he kept staring at me in church,” laughs Merle. They have since moved to Richmond to be closer to their family. They probably couldn’t be any closer too, as there are now four generations of family members on the same street. Since living in Nel-son for the past 12 years, the cou-ple have gone back to Akaroa several times, usually stay-ing at the camping grounds in the cab-ins.The Frasers have 19 great grand chil-dren and 15 grand children. Don says

the marriage has been so successful be-cause they started off with a sound basis that they loved each other and that they intended to be supportive to each other, no matter what. “It was based on love and it was based on respect. We both come from families where our parents had good mar-riages and we wanted to have it like that, but even better.”They are looking forward to their next visit to Akaroa in five years time.

NEWS IN BRIEF

The Summer Flower Show in Brightwater flourished over the weekend despite a series of unfortunate events that were overcome on route to one of the most successful shows in recent years. Organisers were extremely happy with the attendance, especial-ly the turnout on Sunday which was much greater than in years past. The quality of flowers on show at the Brightwater Hall was unparalleled given the circumstances ac-cording to Pamela Sirett, secretary for the Bright-water Horticultural Society. “We were absolutely amazed that they’re so good because of the terrible weather we have had,” says Pamela. The unseasonal weather and December’s flooding can severely damage bulbs and young flowers. De-

spite this the green thumbs around Waimea still managed to present some stunning flowers albeit a week later than expected. “We actually had to delay the show by one week because the gladiolus weren’t out and just came out this week, says Pamela.Adding to the hurdles was another act of nature as one of the principal growers was bitten by a cat and was unable to pick any flowers at all. Having one of the primary sources of cut flowers sabotaged by a fe-line nuisance could have left a gaping hole along the tables, but the community got together to remedy the situation.“We touted round the local people and we all pitched in together. We had next-door neighbours offering to cut flowers, it was a real community effort.”

DOVEDALE HOST COUNTY FAIR: Valen-tines and their families will be flocking to the Dovedale Country Affair this Sunday to sample the delicious old-fashioned lemon cordial the Year 3’s at Dovedale School are making, along with a range of entertain-ment, stalls and exhibitions. This truly is a community fair and everyone helps to make it a very special day, including the children. Everyone will have something to do that they love. Dovedale School will be perform-ing at 11.30am followed by a scything race at 12noon. The amazing Zafir will cook a meal for 100 people in just 30mins, starting at 2pm or perhaps you’d rather see the doghandling or the now almost lost skill of to-bacco tying. Gates open at 11am – 5pm.

Listening to the excited voices of children as they go shopping for the latest in pens, pencil cases and notebooks from Smiggle, grabbing the coolest backpacks from Amazon and dropping by Living and Giving to replace those old lunch boxes from last year, I with many other parents let out a sigh of relief that our children are back in school where they can get back to a daily routine and we can stop and enjoy a well deserved coffee, catching up with friends and hearing of their summer adventures. Wednesday is the perfect day to stock up on eggs, fresh fruit and veges from the farmers market. Language no barrier for ArmstrongsWhen the Armstrong family headed to Viet-nam for 18 months they made one pact – what-ever opportunities or disgusting food was on offer, they had to try it.School teachers Cade and Glenna Armstrong took their three children, Oliver, 12, Lauren, 9 and Maddy, 6, to Vietnam in 2010 after an op-portunity came up to work at an international school. Cade’s brother Regan also lives in Viet-nam and works as principal of the school, and had been pestering Cade about coming over for years. “We didn’t have any reason not to go over there,” says Cade. “So we went and it was great.”At international schools there is a twin-school system where some classes are taught in Eng-lish with some in Vietnamese.Oliver was quick to learn Vietnamese and could have a conversation, while the rest of the family could say simple greetings. But the biggest culture shock for the family, apart from the traffic, was the level of educa-tion at the school over there. “Their core sub-jects are really hard, way higher than what our kids would do here.” Teachers had to be at work at 8am and and could not leave before 5pm.Food on the trip included scorpions, snakes and fish. Except the fish was swimming freely in a tank right before your eyes, before it was sent to the kitchen.

All of the Tasman region’s schools have officially started for 2012.The region’s secondary schools started last Tues-day and all primary and intermediate schools, that didn’t go back last week, have now all began term one as well. No school can start later than February 7.Term three will be the longest of the four, start-ing on Monday July 16 and ending on Friday September 28.The school year has gone back to its regular term schedule following a change due to the 2011 Rugby World Cup, which saw longer terms one and two.

This Week WEDNESDAY 8 February 2012 9

Last week I watched the final of the Rugby Sev-ens on TV and I was interested to hear the com-ments of DJ Forbes, the captain of the winning New Zealand team. I also saw my wife’s parents being interviewed on TV One’s ‘Close Up’ re-garding their perspectives on marriage and the keys to the success of their 65 years together as a married couple. Both had the same simple reci-pe for their success.DJ Forbes’ immediate comment when asked about their winning recipe he said “in the bi-ble it says where there is unity, God commands a blessing.” He then explained the importance of being united as a team and the benefits that follow from being able to play as a team rather than as individuals. The big challenge of course is to learn how to shape and mould the individu-als into a team that thinks about us and not just about me, about our goals rather than my goals.Don and Merle Fraser spoke about the chal-lenges that we all face in our relationships and especially in marriage, which is intended to be the closest and richest, most meaningful of all human re-lationships. Marriage as God intended it is based on the man and the woman leaving their parents, and becom-ing, as Jesus put it as “one flesh,” so that they no longer think and live as two sepa-rate individuals, but as one, no longer thinking about me, my wants, my needs, my goals. A huge challenge, but Jesus not only explained the purpose of meaningful relationships and suc-cessful marriages, but he also gave us the recipe. He gave us the ‘Why?’ as well as the ‘How?’The principles and challenges are exactly the same, whether it is in marriage, sport, politics or the work-place or wherever decisions have to be made that affect the lives of others. This current-ly includes discussion on political topics such as Waitangi Day and how we work through all the sensitive historical issues related to the Treaty and a little closer to home, as we in Tasman and Nelson discuss, debate or argue about the amal-gamation of our councils. The key is not to let selfish ambitions or personal agendas or differing personalities cloud the im-portant issues of what is the best for the greatest number. One of the greatest teachers of all time was the Apostle Paul. He spoke on humility as being a key to coming to a place of unity. “Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own inter-ests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.” That is something worth thinking about.

Just a thought...

Hard work pays off as meat prices soarGeorge Sims has been a farmer for more than 50 years and he’s never seen the price of meat this good. The Hoult Valley farmer likes being his own boss. He decides what time to get up in the morning. He decides what time to clock out. But after decades of hard work, sometimes choosing to do up to 100 hours a week on the farm with only five hours of sleep a day, it’s definitely paying off as lamb prices reach up to $160 each at the meat works, the highest George has ever witnessed.Described by local shearers as one of the last remaining “old school farmers” around, the 73 year-old plied his trade as a sheep shearer when he first left school, just so he could save up to buy his own land. Two new farms later, thanks to two generous offers from his neighbours, George made his way from Golden Bay to Murchison and now to Wakefield. He says the freedom to do his own thing has always be a huge coup. “You haven’t got to punch a clock. You don’t have to be there at half past seven [am], even though I start long before that. If you get yourself organised you can go for a hunt. But it’s all down to me and if I do a good job them I’m satisfied,” he says. George says he was always meant to be a farmer. When he was 15 years-old, his Dad pulled him out of school. “That was my career started for me. But I think that’s what I wanted to do anyway.”George worked on the family farm in Takaka for five years, before leaving home to be a shearer. His father didn’t

want him to leave, but George went anyway. “I don’t know why he never wanted me to go. Same with he nev-er wanted me to play rugby.” George was a talented second-five eighth for the Golden Bay/Motueka school boy reps. But he reck-ons his father was just trying to protect him from the drinking cul-ture.Once he earned enough cash to buy his own farm, George became a sheep and beef farmer, along with his “better half ” Hilda. When his neighbours wanted to expand, he was bought out and moved to a bigger lo-cation near the Owen River. However, the winter was long and George says he was prob-ably 10 years older than he would’ve liked at that stage, so when another neighbour waved the chequebook, he found himself a nice place in Hoult Valley which he now calls home. But it’s been even more succesful, which is evident by the new tractor he rides around on.Just three years ago, you would only get $60 for a lamb. Now they’re fetching, on

average, $120 each, sometimes as much as $160.The biggest buyers are now in Asia, he says. A growing human population has lead to a bigger demand for meat. George leaves the selling up the experts though. He’s more hands on. Even with two struggling knees, George has no plans to call it a day just yet.

Top restaurant closing downOne of New Zealand’s most awarded restaurants, Richmond’s Boutereys, is closing down.Owner Matt Bouterey confirmed the decision last week and will now travel around New Zea-land with his family, before returning to Nelson in the future. He says it was time for change and despite be-ing named a winner of Cuisine Magazine’s Best Smart Dining Regional award in 2009 and 2010, they just weren’t prepared to tackle another Nel-son winter. “It’s just time for a change. It’s been a great restaurant and we’ve had a lot of fun,” he says.Matt wanted to thank all of his staff, saying it was a team effort, making the restaurant what it was.The building will now become a cafe, owned by a local couple.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES: Boutereys owner Matt Bouterey is closing down the res-taurant and will travel around the country with his family. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

If you’re a fan of the Dukes of Hazzard, you’ll want to see the replica General Lee that is the newest pride and joy of a member of the Nel-son Car Show Committee. The event is sure to attract some of the coolest and quirkiest vehicles in our district. If you think your car is something special, you can enter it into the show. The entry cost is only $5 whether you enter a car or not, and those en-tering a vehicle have the chance to win prizes based on categories as well as a randomly drawn prize. The categories range from Top Judged Overall to Top Tyre Torturer, for the winner of the burnout competition, there’s a prize for the Top Motorcycle and categories for different countries of make; America, Europe, Australia. Everyone who attends the show will have the chance to vote for the People’s Choice, and there’s

even a Work in Progress category. For a full list of categories, check the website. You can enter your car or motorbike online or just bring it on the day; gates open for vehicles at 9am each day. Last year they managed to fit over 300 cars and bikes onto the showgrounds, so get your soap and wax out and bring out your car’s shine for the show. There are prizes for each category’s winner which will include goodies like a Speights Ale House voucher and more. The burnout competition is sponsored by Sturgeon’s Amusements, with a massive $1000 for the winner. Everyone who en-ters a car on the day will go into a random draw with a new set of tyres from Mag & Turbo for the winner.Even with the massive range of vehicles that will be on display, cars aren’t the only reason to come to the Nelson Car Show. The burnout competi-tion held on the Saturday from 12pm to 3pm is sure to get hearts racing, with a Motocross jump display held before and after. The Sunday will be the main show day, with band Krazy Kats play-ing from 10am, the RC stock car racing, and of course the all important judging of the cars and prize giving, which will be held at around 3pm. There will be hot food and cold drinks, and Spei-ghts Ale House will be setting up a hospitality tent so you can grab a cold beer. To keep the little ones amused, there will be a bouncy castle. This Friday, the night before the show opens, there will be an evening cruise from 4pm, start-

Last years overall winner was this 1957 Buick Riviera be-longing to Dave Sales.

ing at the showground. You can drive in the convoy from Ca-dillac Way through Nelson City via Stoke and Wakatu, around the waterfront to Tahunanui, where there will be a beach bar-becue. Entrants will receive a free Pestells sausage, and it’s a great chance to bring along a picnic and enjoy the warm sum-mer evening. The Car Show was started in 2005 as a way for local enthusi-asts to indulge their passion and members of the community

to see some of the most interesting or impressive cars and mo-torbikes in our district. It has been growing ever since, and this year looks to continue that trend. The showgrounds will be at Cadillac Way in Annesbrook, just past the Speights Ale House. There will be signs directing at-tendants and free show parking for the cars that aren’t enter-ing the competition. Come along to enter your prized vehicle or just to see some of the greatest cars from our region.

Tigers tamed at teams champsThe Nelson Tigers clawed their way to the EN-ZED stockcar teams racing championship final, surpassing last year’s controversial exit, before car troubles ruined their hopes of getting one over rivals and hometown team the Palmerston North Panthers.Team captain and former 1NZ Dale Ewers’ car didn’t even make it through the first lap, surren-dering to the infield due to electrical problems. With Blair Cunningham, Shane Harwood and Brett Nicholls left to hunt the Panthers, the job seemed a lot more difficult with a car down.Brett attempted to go around Peter Bengston but was instead sent up the wall and onto his side on the home straight, calling an end to his day’s rac-ing.Shane got the better of Scott Joblin in turn two but, when Blair’s car called it quits, it was Shane that was left to fend for himself against three Panther cars, as the Tigers failed to capture their third team’s title, handing Palmy its 15th.Shane Penn took out the title race.South Island champion Brett Nicholls says the better team won on the night, following a series of bad luck for the visitors. “Blair’s gearbox, my car getting rolled and Dale had electrical prob-lems,” says Brett. While he says it wasn’t overly disappointing, despite failing at the final hurdle, Brett says the team were definitely after a victory.

Close to 15,000 speedway fans packed into the Robertson Holden International Speedway, with dozens of supporters making the trip north from Nelson. The team was reasonably confident after day one, surpassing Auckland and Whanganui. “We knew Whanganui was going to be hard and we were real happy to beat them and we beat them quite comfortably in the end too,” he says. The team will gather again next month for more teams racing in Auckland. This weekend’s racing will see the South Island Midget Championship held at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway on Saturday night. Nevil Basalaj and Nick Marquet will be the hometown favourites, as per usual. The superstocks will also be on show with the closed club championship. Brett says he is expecting a tough ride, with any of the Nelson drivers a potential favourite. Both of the Boote cars, plus the five Tigers will all be in action. Brett says one driver to watch will be young Dale McKenzie who is the fifth member of the Nelson Tigers. “Man he’s really stepped up another gear in Nelson and he’s going to be hard to beat.”Brett admits it will be weird putting his regular car body on this week. “You got to go into the club champs without trusting anybody. Every-body is going to be pushing hard to win the club champs because it’s a fairly big event out here. There’s 15 or 16 cars going for it. She’s gonna be hard work.”

Local stars in rain decided playoffA four wicket haul could have sealed Richmond’s Marty Kain a shot at Ford Trophy redemption, but it was the rain that confirmed the Central Stags place in this weekend’s final. The Stags left arm-spinner was in-strumental in the side’s semi final against the Auckland Aces in New Plymoth on Sunday. In only his second one-dayer for Central Districts, the ACOB star took his opportunities with both hands and was clearly happy with his performance that included tak-ing the prized wicket of Aces’ top scorer Colin de Grandhomme. It as the first time Marty had picked up a wicket for CD. “Yeah it was brilliant to get another opportunity, espe-cially in a semi-final. To do well was very pleas-ing,” he says. “Unfortunately it started raining, because it didn’t really work against us.” Marty ended up with figures of four wickets for 46 from nine overs on a wet track, before the game was abandoned just 30 balls into the CD innings. Because Central were the top qualifier, they were given a free pass into the final and will now meet the winner of tonight’s Auckland versus Otago

Volts match. Marty was involved in the Canterbury Wizards squad last year, playing in the Ford Trophy final. They lost to Auckland. But since relocating back to his hometown of Nelson, he is enjoying life as a Stag. “The vibe amongst the one day team has

just been brilliant. We’ve had a few rained off games but the games they have played, they’ve generally won. The boys certainly like playing at Pukekura Park.”Marty says it was “really good for the confidence” just to be part of the team, previously spending time in the HRV Cup as 12th man. “Even just to get the first wicket and get the ball rolling. It certainly does wonders picking up a wicket and from there it’s just keeping your concentration.”

Leg-spinner Tarun Nethula will be available after a spell with the BlackCaps so Marty is still unsure whether he will play in the final this weekend, but with four wickets to his name he will definitely keep selectors on their toes about playing two spinners. “If he’s back I’m not too sure, but hope-fully I’ll still be in the side. But obviously we’ll have to see.”If Marty does not play this weekend, he will be involved in the Nelson Twenty20 final.

College edge Wakatu but miss out on finalA solid 48 runs from batsman Daniel Hooper and a five wicked bag from Shaw Mori has handed Waimea College an eight run win over Wakatu 2nd XI at Ngawhatu on Saturday.Coach Lee Smith says it was a suprising win for the young side, who have punched above their weight in the limited overs form of the game,

especially at 63/2 after eight overs chasing 118. “The Twenty20 is always a bit harder for the school boys because they haven’t got the same power,” he says.Waimea College missed out on a final spot in the second division final but will now focus on the D’Arcy Cup, a tournament for secondary schools.

CRICKET: An unbeaten half century by skipper and former Waimea College student BJ Barnett helped anchored Nelson to an outright victory over Canterbury Country and a rare chance to venture further through the Hawke Cup. Nelson will now prepare for the zone-three challenge on February 24-26. Current holders Hamilton face the zone 2 challenge from Wai-rarapa next weekend.

ATHLETICS: Brendon Barnett made a return to Saxton Oval nailing a 6.89m jump to win the men’s long jump, following a hamstrong in-

jury. Chris Brake won the high jump with an impressive 1.91m. Brendon was second in the high jump and Chris was second in long jump.

CRICKET: Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers were beaten by neighbours Robbies Bar & Bistro WTTU on Saturday in the final round of the local Twenty20 competition, with both sides failing to qualify for the final. A 63-run innings by WTTU skipper Routhan highlight-ed his team’s batting effort of 143 for seven as former captain Aaron Mallinson also chipped in with 45 runs. Pacey bowler Dean Hawley was Wanderers’ leading wicket-taker with 3-11. Wanderers could only muster 117 for eight in reply, Tom Cross topscoring with 37, as Andy Baxendine and Cade Armstrong collected two wickets a piece. WTTU and Wanderers fin-ished bottom of the ladder.

Earthquakes have been a real killer for fishermen and women over the past week or so. We don’t know why, but fish do not like earthquakes so alot of areas have been pretty quiet.Delaware Bay was really hard work for those who made the trip, with one boat getting just a few fish for a day’s work. The news was equally poor for Kenepuru and Pelorus, both areas are very patchy and we haven’t heard of anyone catching anything of any significance for a while. Now for some good news, the snapper are still fishing quite well in Tasman Bay, we’ve heard stories

of some really good catches out there. Another good spot has been the Ruby Bay end of Rabbit Island where plenty of bream between 25 and 35cm mark have been caught. Also along the Bolder Bank, there has been plenty of action. We saw some good sized Kingfish being caught just off the light-house by members of the fishing club, they were about 75-95cm long.Tip of the week: Head to the Ruby Bay end of Rabbit Island or off the Boulder Bank near the Glen in about 60 to 70 feet of water. Target them with flasher rigs and a small bit of squid.
