Day 8 All classes will be remaining as they are. (Pat Cavanagh) Student Investiture The Investiture for our School Leaders for 2019 will take place on Friday 22 February at 8.35 a.m. (Pat Cavanagh) Camps 2019 Year 4, 5 and 6 Camp notices were sent home this week. (Ross Naumann) News from 1W 1W students were very excited to start school last week. They were each asked what they’d like to learn in Year 1, with some interesting answers. Fox, George, Heidi, Kiara and Zeb were keen to learn maths. Bentley, and Maybelle wanted to learn how to write. Reuben, Lily and Charlotte wanted to learn how to draw. In the realm of science, Ace wanted to learn about bees, Ivy B and Kaylee wanted to know how the moon was made and Indigo wanted to learn what’s inside people’s bodies. Making things themselves was popular too – Theo wanted to learn how to make “stuff”, Stella wanted to know how to make things out of paper, Ivy O wanted to learn how to make toys and Ryder was hoping to learn how to make dirt bikes, but I’m not sure we’ll get time to cover that in Year 1. Riley wanted to know how to make Robots – lucky for him we’ll be making robots do what we tell them through coding this term. Knox may be better off at Hogwarts, as he was hoping to learn how to make a potion to make himself little. Mickey may have to wait a bit to learn how to be a police officer, Boone wasn’t sure what he wanted to learn, nevertheless, all the students in 1W will be learning skills to help them become independent, responsible learners this year. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Over the last few years you have probably heard the term “STEM”. Put simply, STEM is the integration of our curriculum subjects Science, Technology and Mathematics underpinned by a real-world problem solving context. Typically a STEM task draws key content from each of these subject areas and poses a problem specific to a relevant topic of study for the class. Students then follow an inquiry process to investigate the problem and work collaboratively to design (engineer), test and reflect on their solutions. STEM tasks are incredibly engaging and provide students with opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of the curriculum focus and also real-world collaborative problem solving skills. In addition to our classroom tasks there will also be opportunities for students to participate in coding and robotics clubs and competitions. STEM has become a major focus for education around the world as employment opportunities in this area are growing at twice the rate compared to other occupations. To assist schools meet the challenges of implementing the Australian Curriculum Technologies learning area, that forms the key component for STEM, the Queensland Government has committed $81.3m that will be used to provide professional development to teachers and purchase resources like robotics kits. One of the key features of a STEM task is having a real-world context so we are always looking to build partnerships with our community. Perhaps you are working in one of the STEM fields and want to share your work to inspire a new generation. Please don’t hesitate to let your child’s teacher know how you might be able to help. This is an exciting initiative and I look forward to sharing our success during the year. (Andrew Grummitt - STEM Teacher) Uniforms Please note that this year students are only allowed to wear their special shirts, such as Noosa District, Regional Sports, Cheerleading, Musical, Rock Band etc. on a Friday. From Monday to Thursday they are required to wear their Blue or Sports shirts. (Pat Cavanagh) Travelling to school

To help families ensure their children travel safely to school, TransLink provides a number of

resources on their school travel page. Parents are encouraged to use the school service finder

and learn about school tickets and student concessions, as well as tips to stay

safe.https://translink.com.au/travel-with-us/school-travel (Ross Naumann)

Home Reading Volunteers needed… Can you help? Our Home Reading program for our junior school will be commencing SOON. We are seeking volunteers to support our classroom teachers in undertaking this very important program. If you are able to help out in your child’s class please chat to their teacher. The home reading process takes about 30 minutes each morning and supports our children in developing this vital life skill. We look forward to welcoming you into our classrooms. (Karen Hatchman)

Get to know your teachers Our Parent Information sessions for 2019 will take place in Weeks 3 and 4. These meetings are one of the ways that we use as a school to keep you informed of wonderful opportunities that the new year will bring. This is your chance to meet your child’s class teacher, find out about the classroom rules and routines, get the latest on the work covered across the school year, find out about extra-curricular activities or ask any questions that you may have. A special invitation has been sent home with all students. We look forward to seeing you then and hearing about how your child has settled into the new school year. I encourage all parents to attend this important event. Dates and times for these meetings are as follows:

(Karen Hatchman) Daily Absence Notification

“Each day’s learning builds on what has been learnt before.” Students are required to be at school every day, unless there is a good reason for the absence i.e. illness. We ask that parents notify the school if their child / children are going to be absent. Notification of absence can be made by accessing the “Register Absences” link on the School Web Page. (This is the preferred method) Alternatively you may telephone the office on 5471 9300 or emailing - [email protected] Should the school not receive a reason for student absence, a text message will be sent to the primary carer’s mobile number listed with the school at enrolment. This notification is only sent where the school has not already received notification of the absence. Your response to the text is required via a phone call to the office or by using the absence link or emailing as described above. (Beth Sharry) Student Information Update If you or your child’s details have changed, please contact the school office for an update form to be completed. This could include change of address, phone numbers, medical condition, emergency contacts and custody details. Please notify the school office as soon as possible of any changes. Changes can also be made anytime using the QParents app. (Beth Sharry)

Sport

There are many local sporting clubs that students are able

to sign up for. These sign on days are often advertised in

the school newsletter. Outside of weekly PE lessons and

class sport there are opportunities for students to participate

in school teams, district teams, regional and state teams.

The trials for the school teams are communicated through

daily notices, classroom messages and on parade.

A reminder for all students participating in PE lessons;

please have your hat and water bottle with you. We are

having our lessons in the Hall at the moment and for the

next month, due to the hot weather.

The 4Rs of Online Safety… • Respect– I treat myself and others the way I like to be treated.

• Responsibility – I am accountable for my actions and I take a stand when I feel something

is wrong.

• Reasoning – I question what is real.

• Resilience – I get back up from tough situations. (Beth Sharry)

P&C News A big welcome back to all our returning families and an even bigger welcome to our new students and families who have started at Coolum Primary this year. 2019 is already shaping up as another exciting year of events and improvements supported by your P & C. Keep an eye out for our fabulous family movie night under the night skies early in Term 2 (date TBA), along with other fun events throughout the year. Our air conditioning project continues to progress. Some unexpected but required infrastructure improvements have pushed back our target dates but we remain dedicated to getting all classrooms air conditioned as soon as possible. We'd also like to welcome Helen Maycraft to our team, who will be assisting Denise in the many aspects of your P & C business, including Outside School Hours Care (OSHC), Tuckshop and Uniform shop. You may have noticed some renovations happening at our OSHC service. A parent conference and meeting room will give our educators a quiet space where they can continue to plan & implement new programs & activities for all our children to enjoy. As part of these renovations we will also see a child-friendly kitchen for our kids to begin their Masterchef dreams. We also welcome the new menu implemented by our Tuckshop convenor Gayle, who joined us in Term 4 of 2018, with some fresh ideas and healthy options along with specific gluten free items. We would love to hear from you if you have any spare time to volunteer or can help in any way. It doesn't have to be specific to school hours. Maybe you don't have much time to spare to be able to help in our Tuckshop or events, but have a skill that could be helpful, e.g. design or grant-writing. Together we embody our school motto: COMMUNITY STRENGTH SUCCESS for every child at Coolum State School. P&C Contacts; either Denise or Helen in our office/uniform shop during school hours, Phone 5471 9371. Our first meeting of the year will be on Wednesday 27 Feb @ 7pm in the staffroom. We'd love to see you there. (Denise French-P&C Manager)
