I remember walking into Niagara County Community College for my entrance exams and being more nervous than I could even remember. As I sat and waited for my tests I read every flyer and booklet on the tables. The one that stuck out the most for me was the M.O.M’s flyer. Being a mother of four and going back to school at 38 years old I figured this program might have women in the same situation that I was. I realized very quickly that my assumptions were correct. It was 20 years since I had walked into a classroom and I was terrified. The program helped me and my sister, who also decided to register for college. It helped us with choosing a major we would be interested in, as well as helped me put together a phenomenal resumé for my internships. Besides academics, the M.O.M’s program was able to help me with learning how to be a positive mentor for women in my position. This program has helped me search for and identify scholarships I was eligible for resulting in being presented a $500 award from ZONTA at their annual awards dinner. Although all of these things are quite direct, meaningful and substantial ways that this program has helped me, I think the most helpful thing the M.O.M’s program has done for me is less tangible. The school calls people like me “non-traditional”. The students just think I’m old. My family has been supportive but life is life and they just expect me to be Mom no matter what I’m doing. The M.O.M’s program has been, in my opinion, the only entity that has truly understood my position and has, from day one, given me the understanding and support to make me truly believe that I can do this. I am more than grateful to this program for this “intangible” effect it has had on me as well as my sister. I hope the program is around for many more years to help more moms like me.

Niagara County Community College recognizes that learning takes place in all phases of life, not just in a classroom. The knowledge individuals gain through employment, life, or self-interests may earn credit toward a degree. There are several ways to demonstrate knowledge and receive college credit, for example certifications and portfolios. If interested in pursuing credit for prior learning, contact the Office of Academic Affairs at 614-6450.

One way to demonstrate knowledge typically gained in college courses is to take CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exams. CLEP is an exciting opportunity to earn college credits in one or more of 33 possible subjects.

CLEP exams are offered the first Saturday of every month on the Sanborn campus.

For questions about CLEP exams offered at Niagara County Community College and to schedule a testing date, email [email protected] or call the Testing Center at 614-6863.

Attention military personnel: CLEP exams are free for all eligible military personnel through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES). Go to clep.collegeboard.org/earn-college-credit/military-benefits

The decision to quit my job and return to college was a frightening one. Like many other veterans, I was aware that I was entitled to benefits, but knew next to nothing about what exactly those benefits were. Fortunately, I chose Niagara County Community College. I hadn’t chosen it first, or even second, but it was undoubtedly the right choice because Veteran Services at NCCC has something you can’t buy: conscience. I had been given very little assistance at other colleges when I went to apply, and failed to complete the application process. When I came to NCCC, I discovered that it also had some of the most supportive staff a veteran could hope for, and more opportunities than I could have imagined. Not only was I quickly registered with properly processed benefits, but I was given the chance to work with the Veteran Services Office to help other veterans and gain experience in that field. Veterans suffer a stigma in society of being fundamentally different from civilians, and that is true. Still, the veteran can be reintegrated into society successfully, and I am a prime example of that, thanks to the opportunities and assistance I received at NCCC. I went from a job in which I had very little chance of promotion, to doing what I loved in theatre and film all while pursuing my degree in business. I am now at Niagara University, having graduated from NCCC with High Distinction (3.97 GPA) in 2016. While at NCCC I was awarded the 2016 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, I was selected to the Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Beta Gamma Honor Societies and I was a member of SALUTE, the National Veterans Honor Society. At Niagara University, I am continuing my work with Veteran Services, and my degree path in Business Management with aims toward an MBA.

This is not the first time I’ve had the opportunity to testify to the success I have experiencedthanks to my time at NCCC, and I am happy to do it again and again. Without NCCC, I might beunremarkably working towards a basic degree, never encouraged to reach for more in college and lifethan the basic expectation of a degree. Thanks to NCCC and the efforts of its Veteran Services Office, I will continue to aspire for greater things; I’ll be happy to testify to that as many times as I am asked.
