On behalf of the Japan-Pakistan Busi-ness Cooperation Committee (JPBCC), I would like to offer sincere congratula-tions to the govern-ment and the people of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on the occasion of Pakistan Independence Day.

In 1984, the JPBCC was formed after the leaders of our countries proposed its establishment to promote bilateral busi-ness ties, trade, investment, tourism and other economic activities. Since then, relations between the two countries have expanded and discussions have been ongoing concerning the improvement of the business situation and other issues.

According to the government of Paki-stan, the real GDP growth rate for fiscal 2015/16 was 4.7 percent, the highest such figure in eight years. Looking ahead, a GDP growth target of 5.7 percent has been set for fiscal 2016/17. Amid an increas-ingly unclear global economy, structural change such as power and fiscal reform

are currently underway. There has been significant improvement in fiscal balance and a reduction of inflation, while a steady increase of foreign exchange reserves is a major achievement of eco-nomic reforms. With these achievements as a backdrop, economic relations between Japan and Pakistan are expected to become increasingly stronger in the future.

In November, we held the seventh Paki-stan-Japan Private Sector Business Dia-logue in Islamabad, at which time automotive industry policy and the taxa-tion system were key topics of discussion.

In closing, allow me to express my con-gratulations to Pakistan once again on the occasion of Pakistan Independence Day. We look forward to the further reinforce-ment of our friendships and partnerships.

On Aug. 14, 1947, Pakistan was founded on this land out of a quest for democracy under the visionary leader-ship of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, arguably one of the greatest democrats of the 20th century. Today Pakistan, on the road to political maturity, is a modern democracy.

On this 70th Independence Day, let me express on behalf of the government of Pak-istan, myself and my compatriots in Japan, our respectful and sincere greetings to Their Imperial Majesties the Emperor and Empress, members of the Imperial family, H.E. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the gov-ernment and the friendly people of Japan.

Stressing human dignity, Pakistan called for the necessity to treat Japan with respect at the 1951 San Francisco Peace Conference and warm bilateral relations have evolved since, with high-level exchanges over the years underscoring this friendship.

The policies of the Honorable Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for inclusive economic growth, infrastructural development and commitment to the idea of a peaceful neighborhood should provide

the impetus for greater cooperation in our region and across Asia, including Japan.

Our economic interaction spans our bilateral relations. The first Japanese trade delegation visited Pakistan in 1948. Today, 81 Japanese corporations are flourishing in Pakistan, with the automotive industry posting record sales and profits.

Last year, Japan had a strong presence at the Pakistan Expo 2015 in Karachi. The Pak-istan-Japan Joint Government Business Dialogue, which took the trade relationship forward, was also held in Islamabad in November. The prime minister’s pro-invest-

ment economic policies are producing posi-tive results that are recognized by the international community and leading com-mentators of finance and business.

As a nation committed to the role and rule of international law, Pakistan is a responsible member of the international community and one committed to peace-ful co-existence. Since 1960, Pakistan has sent over 150,000 men and women from

its military and police forces to work as U.N. peacekeepers in the world’s most dif-ficult conditions and places. Many have sacrificed their lives in their noble efforts to maintain peace.

From Gandhara to Nara, Pakistan and Japan have an ancient bond and in the 21st century our two friendly countries can share our resources and expertise to build a stronger and mutually beneficial friendship.

On behalf of the Japan-Pakistan Parliamentarians Friendship League, I would like to extend my warmest con-gratulations to the government and the people of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on its 70th Independence Day.

Three years have already passed since the former civil administration completed its five-year term for the first time in the history of Pakistan’s constitutional government and the Nawaz Sharif administration was inaugurated in 2013 as the result of the historical general election. The Sharif administration is giving first priority to economic reforms, as well as improve-ment of security situation, and its

achievements have been steadily appeared.

In the security area, the number of ter-rorist attacks in 2015 has been decreased by half compared to the previous year thanks to the national plan on counter-terrorism.

Japan is appreciative of such commit-ment by the administration and we would like to support these efforts for the stability and prosperity of the nation.

The fifth Japan-Pakistan Government Business Joint Dialogue and the seventh Japan-Pakistan Business Joint Dialogue were held in Islamabad in November. Through active exchange of views between two countries, I expect the trade and investment will be activated and Japan will contribute to Pakistan’s economy.

As the president of the Japan-Pakistan Parliamentarians Friendship League, I am determined to continue to make the utmost efforts to achieve better under-standing and a closer relationship with Pakistan. In closing, I would like to extend my best wishes for the continued prosperity of Pakistan.

I would like to express my heartfelt con-gratulations to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on Pakistan Independence Day.

The Olympics, a sporting event signify-ing world peace, are being held this year.

I fought Akram Pahalwan, a former wrestler and a Pakistani hero, 40 years ago. A young relative of his is now in Japan training in wrestling.

I am looking forward to his great suc-

cess as a national team member at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, representing both Japan’s and Pakistan’s hopes for world peace.

May all Pakistani nationals continue to honor the spirit of the foundation of the nation and may both of us take the path to world peace together.
