Beef Carcass Meeting 4-H members are invited to attend a beef carcass workshop on Thursday, December 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Stone Hearth Inn. Jeff Rose, Livestock Coordinator for NEXXUS/NFO, will be presenting to members on how to understand the beef grid grading system. Burgers and fries will be provided off the menu. The meal is sponsored by Winneshiek County Cattlemen and NFO. If you are unable to attend or have any questions, please call the Extension Office at 382-2949.

Beef Weigh-in Date

The 4-H/FFA Beef Weigh-in will be held on Saturday, December 21 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Decorah Sales Commission. There will be a charge of $2.50 per head for county fair. If you are planning on exhibiting market beef animals at the Iowa State Fair or AK-SAR-BEN, you must let us know by Thursday, December 19 the number you plan to weigh-in. There is a $7 additional fee for each State Fair animal weighed in. AK-SAR-BEN animals pay the additional $7 for State Fair plus $7 for AK-SAR-BEN. Please contact the Extension Office

Advanced Feeder Class We have added an Advanced Feeder Class to the beef project this year. These cattle will be weighed in at the December 21 beef weigh-in. Judging of these cattle will be mid-June and will take place at the Decorah Sale Barn. There will also be an educational session before judging that is required for participants in this class. Please read the rules for the Advanced Feeder Class for more information.

Beef Local Origin Papers This year we will be collecting the Local Origin paperwork for market beef steers, market beef heifers, and market dairy steers. We are asking members to fill out this information on the animals, get appropriate signatures and turn in at the December 21 weigh in.

4-H Club Meeting Activity Page

This section of the newsletter will be dedicated to providing ideas and support for your 4-H club meetings. If you have any suggestions for this page, please contact Joni at the Winneshiek County Extension Office.

Gathering Activity

Create a puppet and organize a puppet show.

Outstanding Communicators

One of the desired outcomes of all 4-H

members is to become outstanding communicators. This month we will explore

the exciting world of communication.

Each day 4-H members are impacted by

communication, both verbal and non-verbal.

Talking to friends, writing a report, reading a

book, acting, etc. are all examples of how we

use communication. On a piece of paper, write

down the ways you have communicated in the

last year in 4-H.

Share your list with others and brainstorm

additional communication methods. What are

the most common communication methods? Are

there types of communication methods that are

more appropriate than others in certain

situations? If so, how do you know what is

most appropriate? As a club, discuss these

questions and determine what communication

methods work best for your club

Rice Cake Snowman

Supplies: 3 mini rice cakes, chocolate

flavored graham crackers, raisins or mini

candy coated chocolate pieces, carrot,

fruit roll-up, and peanut butter.

Use 3 mini rice cakes for the head and

body of the snowman. To make a hat, use

chocolate flavored graham crackers. They

will cut into a square and a thin rectangle

to make the hat if you use a serrated, kid

safe cutting utensil and a sawing motion.

OR, try using pumpernickel bread. Use

raisins or mini candy coated chocolate

pieces for the eyes and buttons. Use a

piece of carrot for the nose. Cut a long,

thin rectangle from a fruit roll-up to make

the scarf. Connect the rice cakes and glue

everything together with peanut butter. From: Iowa Clover Kids Toolbox, http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/Clover/
