Arts Camp “I was able to learn so much at Arts Camp this year. I was honored to be this year’s Junior Director and this allowed me to grow so much as a youth leader in ways I haven’t been able to before. Working with so many other amazing, talented youth and adults from around the state made this an experience that I will remember for a long time for sure.” ~ Ashlynn Numrich

Top 30 Record Books We were awed by the number of record books with exceptionally high

scores this year. So much so, that we decided to recognize and

award the “Top 10” with plaques as we traditionally do, but to also

highlight those whose scores were also remarkably high by identifying

the “Top 30” in our county. Youth who received the “Top Ten” had

perfect or near-perfect scores of 99.5 or 100. The remainder of the

“Top 30” had scores ranging from 95-99.

County Board Recognition Sarah and Jody took the Top 30 Record Books to the Winnebago

County Board meeting in October to thank the County Government

for their support of 4-H. Each board member received a record book

to look over and review. We received very positive feedback and the

board members were extremely impressed with the accomplishments

and record keeping skills they saw in each of the record books.

In addition, Anna Chapin and Kelsey Potratz attended the meeting to

receive Commendations from the board in honor of the Key Awards

these young ladies received this summer. Check out the video of this

“Winnebago County Board Meeting” at: https://www.youtube.com/.

(The 4-H presentation starts at about 13 minutes into the meeting).

Thank you! We would like to thank the Winnebago County 4-H Leaders' Association for the 2017 Winnebago County Friend In 4-H Award. We were very honored to have received this award at the 4-H Family Banquet. Growing up in 4-H ourselves and watching our three children enjoy all the benefits that 4-H has to offer has been a wonderful experience. 4-H teaches lifelong skills, builds confidence, promotes positive activities, and forms friendships that last a lifetime. It's been very rewarding to help and encourage other youth in our club and county to get involved in 4-H. It's such a great organization! Special thanks to Nate Piper and Madeline Egan for presenting this award to us, your words were very thoughtful and special. Thank you to all those involved in the 4-H Family Banquet, it was a delicious dinner and such a nice evening! And thank you to the person who nominated us! :) Sincerely, John & Sheri Egan

Community Service

One of the amazing things you can do in 4-H is make our world a better place. We do this through the smiles and kind words we use with each other, through intentional acts of service to help make someone’s day brighter, and through the leadership we offer to change our world for the better. I know many of our clubs and individual youth are already planning to do great things in our communities this holiday season to help out others. Please share what you are doing with our office. What is all this talk about projects? A 4-H project is an area that you want to learn more about during the year. There are projects on just about any topic you would like to study and explore. You also have the opportunity to enter work from your project at the Winnebago County Fair in August to show off what you have learned throughout the year. (Please note the Winnebago County Fair is NOT run by UW-Extension 4-H, this is an optional community activity many of our youth choose to participate in).

How do I sign up for Projects?

1. Make a list of the things you like to do or want to learn more about.

2. Compare your list with the projects described in the 2017-2018

Project Guide (https://winnebago.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/forms-and-applications/ ).

Ask yourself if you have the equipment, money and time to do the projects that sound interesting.

You may also want to look at the Winnebago County Junior Fair Book (http://www.winnebagocountyfaironline.com/ ) for ideas on what projects you are interested in. Youth can only bring exhibits in departments and/or divisions that correspond to the Projects they are signed up in on 4HOnline. Youth have until January 31 to make their final project selections in 4HOnline.

3. After deciding what projects you are interested in, you will select

your projects in 4HOnline (https://wi.4honline.com/ ), either during enrollment or at any time before January 31.

How many projects can/should I sign up for?

These days, we advise you sign up for more rather than less. Wisconsin 4-H has broken project areas into smaller, more specific projects...this means you might need/want to sign up for more projects than you have in the past. In general—sign up for anything you think you might be interested in learning about this year. For example, you will not be able to sign up for “Goats” as a

general project. It is broken into Meat Goats, Dairy Goats, etc. Please sign up for all goat projects that you are interested in.

Fair divisions are only open to youth signed up in a corresponding project in 4HOnline, so you may want to sign up in more specific projects than you have in the past...For example in you are interested in “Science” there are over 30 different science-related projects you can sign up for.

Project Information

21

How many projects can/should I sign up for? (Con’t) Even though we recommend you sign up for more projects rather than less, remember to think realistically about the time and energy you have to put into your projects.

Pick a few projects/areas that you would like to spend a lot of time and effort on.

Pick a few more projects that you would like to explore, but won’t spend as much time on.

Consider if the projects you are signing up for are very similar (all nature-related) or very different. This may affect how many projects you want to commit to/explore. Find a balance that works for you and your family.

Youth in K5-2nd grade ONLY have the option to sign up for the Cloverbud Project

Youth in grades 3rd

– 5th may sign up for the Exploring project

to learn about a variety of project areas. They may also sign up in 1-2 other projects they already have a strong interest in.

I’m Signed up for my Projects—Now what?

Check out the National 4-H Curriculum for your project: https://shop4-h.org/collections/curriculum The project curriculums you will find for sale at this link are also available at the UW-Extension Office for checkout free of charge.

Visit the Wisconsin 4-H Website for your project:

https://fyi.uwex.edu/wi4hprojects/ Start your 4-H Record Book. Record Books help you set

goals for your project, keep track of progress, and record financial information about your project. Some specific Project Pages for your book may also give you ideas on skills you will want to learn. https://winnebago.uwex.edu/4-h-record-book-forms/

Ask your Club Leader if your club has a Project Leader for your

project. Attend project meetings offered. With over 120 project areas to choose from, clubs will not have

project leaders for every area. Some projects areas will have County-wide Project Leaders. Watch the News & Views for upcoming events/project meetings (see page 24).

Check out events like 4-H Fun Day which offers youth the

opportunity to explore a variety of project interests.

Summer Trip/Travel Adventures Articles submitted by 4-H Members

This year I earned the opportunity to go on American Spirit with other 4-H students in Wisconsin. We were gone for 8 days,

7nights traveling in a coach bus around the east coast. Some of

the places we went to were Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Ohio,

Indiana, and Canada. We saw and experienced many different

activities. We saw Niagara Falls, Lexington and Concord, an Amish

farm, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Times Square, the

Liberty Bell, USS Constitution, Valley Forge, Empire State

Building, Battery Park, 911 Memorial, Plimouth Plantation, and

Chinatown. We ate a lobster dinner, and saw Old Fort Erie.

(Con’t on next page)

Everyone was required to present a teachable moment - mine was

on the Liberty Bell. Did you know when it is rung, it makes the

sound of E flat? I sure didn’t. My favorite part was meeting

friends from all over Wisconsin that I am still in contact with

today I hope that everyone can get this opportunity to go on this

life changing trip.

Thank you,

Leah Herbeck

I am Jordan Thede and I attended the Citizenship Washington Focus experience on July 8th-16th, 2017. It was nothing like I expected, it was more! I had attended a school trip to Washington DC before and I thought that this experience would be just the same. Instead, I was told that doing this Citizenship Washington Focus experience would be more than any trip I have done before, so I tried it and I am glad that I did! I made so many friends the second that I got on the bus and even reunited with some old friends from past 4-H experiences! We played lots of group activities as icebreakers on the way there to get to know everyone. Once we got to the 4-H center, we got straight into our groups. I got to meet people from all over the US! We were mixed in groups with people from different states and worked on different activities such as; debating, the talent show, sport activity organizing, and so many more! Then, we presented our work to the whole group as a team. This experience also, included sightseeing, which included a large amount of fun and knowledgeable facts about all the places that we toured. Our group, the Wisconsin delegates, also got a private tour on the balcony of the capitol building where we got to meet Paul Ryan! We also, had the opportunity to ask our state senators questions in person! Along with other things, we went to all the historical monuments of Washington D.C with a personal tour guide! I learned so much! Then, the last night we had the pin exchange and a dance party! I had a great time learning and teaching dance moves to people from different states! Even though leaving and saying goodbye was difficult, it shows us that we had the time of our lives and each of us were able to come back home knowing more and being able to share our experience with others!

Go Global with 4-H International Immersion Programs in 2018! Interested in exploring all the world has to offer? If so, Wisconsin 4-H International Programs are for you! This is your chance to learn about the world by immersing yourself in daily life as a member of a family in a different country. By participating in a homestay instead of traveling as a tourist, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the country’s culture from an insider’s perspective, evolve as a global citizen, quickly adapt to new situations and ways of communication, and develop friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. One delegate from 2016 says, “One of my favorite parts of my exchange was learning how to make homemade tortillas with my host mother!” She also says that she gained soft skills like communication in both the Spanish language and nonverbal communication skills. Another valuable part of the experience was interacting with different people, which increased her ability to make connections with others. If you’re a 4-H youth 12 years old or older, you can apply to participate with other 4-H’ers from around the U.S. to live for a month next summer in Costa Rica, Norway, South Korea, or Japan. Wisconsin 4-H partners with States’ 4-H International Exchange Programs where advance preparation and safety are top priorities. All 4-H international delegations are accompanied by carefully selected and trained 4-H volunteers or staff Adult Advisors who support youth delegates to ensure that they have a positive experience. Visit http://wi4hinternational.org/ for additional information and an application. Applications are due to the Wisconsin 4-H International Programs Office November 20, 2017. Questions? Contact [email protected] or call 608-262-2491 or 608-262-1557.
