WELCOME MESSAGE

Dear Friends,

Manufacturing is on the brink of a new age - one that will fundamentally transform the way products are created, supply chains are managed and how value chains are defined. Underpinning this phenomenon is the convergence of multiple global trends: the low cost of sensors and cloud computing, increasing adoption of analytics, new manufacturing processes and the rapid advances in software and communications technology.

This new age of manufacturing also brings enormous untapped opportunities for Singapore. For example, the adoption of automation and new digital technologies will drive significant productivity improvements, in labor, land and energy. But the benefits go beyond productivity. It is about the ability to produce smarter products and processes and the creation of new services and business models, which were never possible before. It is about agility, flexibility and growth in a dynamic, digital-enabled world.

Singapore has already taken early steps to position itself for this new age of manufacturing. There is an opportunity for Singapore to carve out its role as the global beacon for advanced manufacturing, orchestrating paradigm shifts in execution and in thought leadership. Singapore will be the top-of-mind location for advanced manufacturing investments, where new products, processes and services are created, and where global supply chains are managed and orchestrated. Singapore will also be where there is a vibrant advanced manufacturing ecosystem and where talent is developed and reskilled, to take on existing and emerging jobs in advanced manufacturing.

Smart Manufacturing Asia 2017 plays a critical role, in enabling this vision. It is an important platform for the government and the industry to come together to participate in this new manufacturing age. I therefore urge all of you to join us, as we create the next chapter of Singapore’s manufacturing future.

Regards,

Lim Kok KiangAssistant Managing DirectorSingapore Economic Development Board
