This includes but is not limited to: race, religion, sex, gender identity and expression, 29 color, disability, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, political affiliation, marital or 30 parental status, socioeconomic status and to the extent specified by law, age or veteran status,” 31 and 32 33 WHEREAS, the University of Kansas has an undocumented student community and provides 34 little institutional support for these students, and 35 36

WHEREAS, many students feel unsafe on campus due to recent incidents of discrimination 37 and harassment, but undocumented students face a unique and particular threat, and 38 39 WHEREAS the new reality of a staunchly anti-immigrant Presidential administration 40 threatens the livelihood and access to educational experiences of undocumented individuals, and 41 42 WHEREAS, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program that has 43 provided critical relief from deportation for over 700,000 young people in the United States, is 44 under threat of abolishment once the President-elect assumes office, which poses a real and 45 immediate endangerment to undocumented students studying at the University of Kansas, and, 46 47 WHEREAS, a 2011 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) memo limits but does 48 not fully exclude enforcement actions by ICE officers and agents on school property 49 (https://www.ice.gov/doclib/ero-outreach/pdf/10029.2-policy.pdf), and 50 51 WHEREAS, as an institution, the measure of our commitment to diversity and belonging is not 52 a matter of words or conversations, but rather the concrete policies put in place; addressing the 53 plight of undocumented students at KU is a critical opportunity to demonstrate our bold 54 aspirations for inclusion. 55 56 THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the University of Kansas Student Senate here assembled 57 that the KU Student Senate stands in solidarity with the undocumented community of KU, and 58 59 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Student Senate urges the University to retain the status of it 60 undocumented students as citizens of the University community regardless of their legal standing, 61 and 62 63 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Student Senate calls upon the University to continue to 64 extend higher education access to undocumented students and thus validate their aspirations, 65 experiences, and achievements at KU and in the broader community, and 66 67 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Student Senate asks that the University of Kansas refuse to 68 comply with any future deportations or raids on campus and refuse to disclose information about 69 students’ immigration status to any government agency, and 70 71 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Student Senate entreats the University of Kansas 72 administrators to immediately develop a protocol for establishing itself as a sanctuary campus for 73 undocumented students, faculty, and staff that will protect them from intimidation, unfair 74 investigation, and deportation, and 75 76 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Student Senate requests that the University of Kansas 77 designate a specific office and specific administrators who will assist our DACA and other 78 undocumented community members on a completely confidential basis, and 79

80 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Student Senate asks the University of Kansas to state its 81 support for offering in-state tuition rates to DACA students, and 82 83 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Student Senate strongly urges the University of Kansas 84 personnel to achieve these actions before classes resume in January, and 85 86 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED upon passage, copies of this resolution be sent to the following 87 entities: 88 89 Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little 90 Provost Neeli Bendapudi 91 Vice Provost for Diversity and Equity Nate Thomas 92 Mike Rounds, Associate Vice Provost for Human Resource Management 93 Ola Faucher, Director of Human Resources 94 The KU Office of Public Safety 95 The University Daily Kansan 96 HALO (Hispanic American Leadership Organization) 97 Trio 98 The Office of Multicultural Affairs 99 100
