PASTOR’S COLUMN: Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. We are tempted to look at the Holy Family as an ideal we cannot realize in our families. But, Jesus, Mary and Joseph had their share of struggles. The trust which is fundamental to a marriage was challenged by the pregnancy. Joseph was forced to bring Mary to Bethlehem when she was nine months pregnant. He must have felt terrible when they had no choice but to have the child in a stable. Then they had to get up in the middle of the night and escape Herod by moving to a foreign land, Egypt, away from family and traditions. Still, the Holy Family made it through the difficulties of their family life for one reason only: they had great faith. Joseph had faith in the angel of his dreams and treated the pregnant Mary in an honorable way. He had faith that God would help him protect the child, and he moved the family to Egypt. Mary had faith both in the angel and in God's working through Joseph. Jesus, having emptied himself of his divinity, had faith in his parents to care for Him. As we work our way to the end of this most “remarkable” year let us too have faith in the will and workings of our God and Father. Let us have faith that we have grown stronger and appreciates more all the many things we took for granted; working outside the home, schooling with classmates at school, gatherings and personal contacts with families and friends, celebrating our faith as a Family and as a Community. May the New Year bring freedom from this pandemic, health and safety for our families and community, an understanding that we all have grown from this experience and have become a better people. May the absence of communal worship and reception of the sacraments allow us to grow in an appreciation for our faith and our understanding of it. Like Mary and Joseph and Jesus, may our faith grow as they lived in God. In the name of your parish and school staff; In the name of the religious community, The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, that staffs this parish and all the Palm Springs parishes, and in the name of Fr. John and myself; May God’s choicest blessings be yours in the New Year! And to all of our visitors; may you always travel in safety and be blessed in the New Year. Fr. John Fahnestock, M.S.C. Fr. John Kavcak, M.S.C.

4 ways your family can imitate the Holy Family: 1. Spend a few minutes reflecting as a family on the Gospel either before or after

Mass. Invite a family member with you this week. 2. If you live alone reach out to a family member or friend and share with them on

the phone. 3. Keep an image or statue of the Holy Family in a prominent place for the rest of the Christmas season. Pray for their intercession. 4. Pray with or for a family member in a tangible way today.

THE HOLY FAMILY When we talk about Holy Family we are talking about Jesus and his mother Mary and his foster-father, Saint Joseph. Mary became the mother of Jesus when she was betrothed (formally engaged) to St. Joseph, and Jesus’ real father was God the Father Himself. So Saint Joseph acted as the Father of Jesus on earth.

St. Joseph was a carpenter and worked hard to provide for his family. Many loved Jesus and Joseph and cooked and cleaned for them. When Jesus trained Him to be a carpenter as well. Because they all loved each other with generosity and selflessness they were really the happiest and holiest family that ever lived. We can imitate the Holy Family by loving our parents and siblings and putting others before ourselves. What can you do today to make your Family happier and holier?

Padre John Fahnestock, M.S.C Padre John Kavcak, M.S.C

NEW YEAR MASS SCHEDULE January 1st—New Year’s Day Mass: (Holy Day of Obligation) 9:30am English Mass 11:00am Spanish Mass

WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in our-selves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of end-less promise.
