The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Tuesday, August 15, 2017

Mass 7:00am, 9:00am, 12:00pm & 7:00pm

T his year, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption on Tuesday, August 15th.

Christians honor Mary as the mother of Jesus and as our mother. She was the chosen vessel of our redemption. She agreed to bear the child who would save the world.

The Catholic church believes that God has taken Mary, body and soul, into heaven. One way of explaining this belief is to consider the story of the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark was a portable shrine that represented the divine presence for Israel. Literally and symbolically, with the Ark in their midst, the Israelite believed that God was in their midst.

The Ark resembled an ornate chest. Sacred tradition tells us that among the sacred objects it originally contained was some of the Manna from Israel’s journey in the desert. Eventually David prepared a place for the Ark within a specially designated tent.

One of Mary’s honorary titles is “The Ark of the New Covenant.” As the original Ark became a symbol of God’s presence, so has Mary. As the original Ark contained Manna, so Mary embraced the Son of God, the Bread of Life, in her womb. As David prepared a home for the original Ark, so Jesus, descendent of David, prepared a place for Mary. As the original Ark found a home in a special tent, so God brought Mary to her final home in heaven.

As we believe that Jesus was the first to rise from the dead, so we believe he has also received his mother first into eternity. Eastern tradition calls this event the “Dormition” or “falling asleep” of Mary, indicating that she did not die but was taken to heaven as if asleep. Pope Pius XII declared this mystery as a dogma of the Church in 1950, although it was widely believed and celebrated since the first centuries of Christianity.

Scripture Reflection

I n today’s Gospel from the Book of Matthew, we hear the remarkable

story of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee. St. Peter reflects his faith in the Lord when he says, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus says simply, “Come.” We do not know if Peter stepped into the water or jumped and it does not matter. His faith and trust in the Lord allows Peter, too, to begin to walk on the water. Clearly when Peter’s focus is on Christ, he is able to accomplish this.

However, when Peter loses his focus and begins to observe and think about the storm raging around him, he begins to sink. To Peter’s credit he knows exactly to Whom to turn in that situation. “Lord, save me.” We may often find ourselves in similar circumstances. Peter knew exactly Who to call out to at the moment of crisis. We may do the same.

God truly loves us; we are His children. Listen to the Word of the Lord in Psalm 91: “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

St. Francis de Sales wrote, “Either God will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then; put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.”

Outreach Ministry Saturday, August 19th: Cook team 2: The Mireles’ team, making Tuna sandwiches and Pasta Salad. Bring 2 one pound boxes of cooked elbow macaroni.
