S ince the earliest days of the Church, pilgrims have walked the streets of

Jerusalem in the footsteps of Christ on his way to Calvary. Some of these events are noted in the Gospel accounts and some founded in an-cient tradition. Since most people could not travel to that Holy City in person, customs developed of bringing Jerusalem to the local church! Everyone is also invited to enjoy bread and homemade soup at Madden Hall beginning at 6 pm.

Soup and Stations Fridays during Lent

Soup at 6pm - Stations at 7pm

Lenten Rice Bowl Project Catholic Relief Services are found among the refugee camps and war zones throughout the world. Contribu-tions made throughout the season are a reminder that every penny can help provide food for a poor child somewhere in the world. Rice Bowls are avail-able in the vestibule. To learn more about CRS, please visit their web-site at http://crs.org/.

Our Lenten Journey

O ur Lenten journey began when we added our heartfelt “Amen” to the

injunction: “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” Acceptance of ashes is an out-ward sign of inward grace. What does this sign mean to you? Do you fully under-

stand that “Repent” means a willingness to change your heart? Admittedly, most folks do not like change. We are at home with our habits, our routines and our life-styles. We protect them and resist things that are new and different. We convince ourselves that we are just fine; after all, there are plenty of people who are in worse shape than us. We have managed to make it this far in life, so why bother to change now?

We might even have made peace with our weakness-es, our shortcomings, our sins. The effort needed to change might seem overwhelming. We may have tried to change with little or no results. Even if we succeed-ed, it might seem all too easy to fall back to our old ways. Before long, we may even convince ourselves that we are already as good as we can be!

Lent says that this approach just won’t work. God challenges us to change, not merely externally, but in our hearts. Do we believe that it is still possible to be-come a better version of ourselves? Just focus on one step, one area, one habit; you will be surprised what you can do with God’s grace! May this Lent provide the motivation you need to be a different person come East-er. God’s grace will provide!

~Excerpt adapted from Traveling Light by Fr. Thomas J. Connery

Lenten Order of Penitents

L ent has undergone many changes during the past two thousand years

of feasts and seasons. In addition to a period of personal penance and spiritual renewal, it is also a time of final prepara-

tion for those who would enter the Church through the Easter Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eu-charist. In both cases, we realize that we are members of a larger church than just our local parish...In effect, we are companions on life’s journey with those who have gone before us, those here present and those yet to come.

By joining the Order of Penitents 2017, you express your desire to take this season seriously and enable the Church to accompany you through the support of our prayers and works of charity. Your names will be placed upon the altar throughout this holy season. Cards are available in the church Commons.

Take Up Your Cross

A rab Christians of the Holy Land carved the olive wood crosses which will be provided to

parishioners on Ash Wednesday. In addition to the obvious symbolism of Christ’s sacrificial love, our brothers and sisters who live in Jerusalem, Bethle-hem, the West Bank and the Palestinian territories, ask that we accept these crosses as a sign of solidarity with all those who struggle for freedom in the world today.

Among the freedoms they seek are their God-given rights to live in safety, marry those they love, give birth to children, obtain an education, attend quality schools, choose a profession, secure meaningful jobs, hold public office, vote without fear, receive medical assistance and freely practice their faith. Each time you look at this sim-ple cross, remember that the sacrifice required of many is still very real.

Another suggestion in accepting this cross is to carry it with you throughout the Lenten Season. If you keep it in the same pocket as loose change, or in your purse near cash or credit cards, you may think twice about making a purchase and, instead, put that money aside for charity. You’ll be surprised how quickly those funds accumulate!

Welcome, Fr. Jacob Joseph Please join us in welcoming, Fr. Jacob Joseph, CMI. Born in South India (Kerala) as the 6th child of the seven children, he joined the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate order and was or-dained a priest on May 11, 1983. After his ordination he worked as a college Botany teacher until May 2000. During seventeen years as a priest in India, Fr. Jacob as-sumed many responsibilities such as parish work, pastoral ministries, retreat preaching, seminary rector and even in construction of buildings. In 2000, when the education system was rearranged, he lost his teaching position. This allowed Fr. Ja-cob to come to the USA for pastoral ministry. Up-on arrival to the USA, he spent seven years in the New York archdiocese. In June, 2007 he came to the Diocese of Charleston. He comes to us from Our Lady of Peace in North Augusta, SC and will assume the position of Parochial Vicar for St. John the Beloved on February 27th.

Thursdays beginning February 23rd 10:00am or 7:00pm

During this, our season of repentance and prepara-tion are you seeking a way to more fully understand what Lent is all about? Even his apostles could not really grasp the gravi-

ty of the last days of Christ’s life and His necessity of fulfilling the prophesies of the Old Testament. Do not stand off from the place of crucifixion, come down to the cross, put yourself in the scene! Stay with His mother and His beloved apostle and listen...listen, be enlightened by His final utteranc-es and understand. Join us for a bible study of “The Seven Last Words of Christ” by Rich Cleveland. Over 7 sessions we will hear Him, in the fog of pain and death reveal to us the unfathomable depths of His love and faithfulness on Thursdays mornings, facilitated by Fr. Dennis Hadberg and evenings fa-cilitated by Mr. Brian Riggle. Cost for materials is $10. Please reserve your spot by emailing Brian Riggle at:

Scripture Reflection

St. Paul had both a deep understand-ing and appreciation for stewardship, what it meant to be a good steward. In his First Letter to the Corinthians, our Second Reading on this last Sunday in Ordinary Time before Lent begins, Paul states elo-quently, “Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.”

As is the case with all Holy Scripture, Paul is writing to more than the Corinthians; he is writing to each of us as well. Paul’s understanding of what a steward was is that he manages the household of God. Managing in-cluded preserving and protecting. We are also to be servants (disciples) of Christ, and Paul goes on to say that a servant steward must be trustworthy. To Paul that meant we are to be faithful in order to be good disciples.

There are several difficulties for us in all of those terms and requirements: being stewards, being serv-ants, and being faithful. They mean that we have to place ourselves second to others and second most of all to Christ our Savior. We tend to question this and tend to have strong feelings of independence. That is what we learn from our society. Yet, to be a steward like Paul requires us to be humble and accepting. That may be our greatest test.

St. Augustine wrote, “What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of others.” That, too, is stewardship.
