USED JOB SHACK…AMAZON.COM Amazon Warehouse Worker - Interviewed at Amazon.com Interview Details – Hiring at Amazon was the easiest job to ever get. They never really interviewed me, but instead I just took a sorting test on a computer and did a mouth swab drug test for fifteen minutes.

Page 7: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

Interview Question – Can you handle a fast paced environment? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Warehouse Associate - Interviewed at Amazon.com Interview Details – Hiring is through a temporary employment agency. Periodic "conversions" offer employment to those who are considered solid workers. The company seems to not enjoy as good a reputation as they might like. It seems many aspirants to employment decide to move on rather than deal with the issues/problems inherent with Amazon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lead Fulfillment Associate - I applied online and the process took 4 weeks - interviewed at Amazon.com in July 2014. Interview Details – Completed online application. I was contacted the next day for a phone interview. The phone interview was a bit awkward. There was a delay in the line so my interviewer and I interrupted each other a few times. The questions weren't too difficult, mostly about safety, and times when you've had to address an unethical situation with an employee. The interviewer definitely was reading from a script, and records all your answers. They let you know right away at the end of the interview if you will be invited for an in person interview or not. Luckily, I was. You schedule your in person interview online, I scheduled mine for about two weeks after the phone interview. You must bring Proof of Education to your interview, and note that even though it says a copy of your high school diploma is fine, you must have the original. I made this mistake and had to drive the 45 minutes back to my house to get the original. Another girl was sent back to her house to retrieve her original as well, and actually missed being interviewed that day because she lived too far away to be back in time. After having your POE and ID checked, your group(in my case it was only myself and one other person) are led into another room where you're given a short worksheet that has a role play exercise and a second problem to evaluate your basic math and problem solving skills. You're given 15 minutes to complete both, and then you're taken into a room where you're split up and interviewed individually.

Page 8: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

At first, the two I was interviewing with seemed a bit stiff, they seemed like they were having a long day but I kept making little jokes and smiling and they lightened up quickly. You do the role play with one of the interviewers as a problem employee, and I will warn you, they do NOT make this easy. I've had plenty of experience in acting and improv but the interviewer playing the difficult employee was shutting me down at every angle. Just try your best, and do what you feel would work if you were in that employees shoes. After the role play, we went over the math problem and they do ask that you try to give some "out of the box" answers. Then it follows with the usual interview questions: Tell me about a time when you... etc. When the interview is over, you don't receive any feedback. All I got was "It was great to meet you." and escorted to the door. I was sure I didn't get the position even though I felt the interview went so well. Two days later I received a call from Amazon HR telling me they'd like to offer me the position and set the date for my welcome event. Interview Question –

• The most difficult part was the role play exercise; they really don't give you anything to work with.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fulfillment Associate - I applied through a staffing agency and the process took 2 days - interviewed at Amazon.com. Interview Details – process was standard staffing agency interview. Tell me about yourself. Process was standard staffing agency interview. Tell me about yourself. Process was standard staffing agency interview. Tell me about yourself. Process was standard staffing agency interview. Tell me about yourself. Process was standard staffing agency interview. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Warehouse Associate - Interviewed at Amazon.com Interview Details – I applied online through snagajob and got an email the next day to go to a hire event and pick the day I wanted to go so I went the following Monday, it was Wednesday and I could’ve picked as soon as Friday, and when I got to the event I had the job I just had to take a mouth swab drug test and take my

Page 9: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

proof of education. I applied for a seasonal part time position so I believe that is why it was so easy. Just waiting on my background to clear Interview Question – There was no question. I just had to complete a questionnaire when I applied which replaced a real interview. Either strongly agree or strongly disagree on questionnaire. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Warehouse Associate - I applied online and the process took 2 months - interviewed at Amazon.com in June 2014. Interview Details – I applied online at Amazon.com. About two weeks later I got an email asking me if I wanted to set up an appointment online. It was a direct hire event for a new warehouse opening up in Moreno Valley. I set up an appointment that wasn't for another three weeks. I arrived at a hotel that had Amazon signs showing you where to go. When I went inside there was some Amazon employees sitting at a few tables, and there was a line of people waiting to speak with them. When I finally sat down to speak with them, I expecting an interview but instead the employee asked for my ID and my diploma and told me there was no interview and then she gave me a contingency letter offer of employment. I got the job as long as I passed the background check and oral drug test. The lady sent me to another room with about 20 other people who got the job to take our oral drug test and watch a video about Amazon and what they had to offer to their new employees! It was by far the easiest interview I had ever been to in my life. It wasn't really an interview because they didn't ask me a single question. Interview Question – No questions were asked. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fulfillment Associate - I applied online and the process took 5 months - interviewed at Amazon.com in June 2014. Interview Details – I filled out an online application, and took a test (also online). That was back in February of this year, I then received a few emails about an Amazon Fulfillment Center and what it is like to work there. Finally at the end of May I received an email to come to a tier 1 hiring event (which I had to pick one

Page 10: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

of there posted times listed in the email). I went to the event, where they had me bring my photo I.D. and proof of my education. After taking both and checking them over they gave me a temporary access card so that I could get into the area where the hiring event was being held. I was then handed a piece of paper with information on what my schedule would be, and what the next steps in the hiring process would be like, they called it a contingent hiring agreement. I was then sent to a room with about 15 to 20 other people and we were asked to take I.D photos for our access cards, then we were given a few speeches from some of the upper management and HR reps, and finally we were asked to take a drug test. We were told that as long as we passed both the drug and the background tests then our job offer would be considered valid, and we go on to the next part of the hiring process, the new hire orientation. It took about 6 days to get an email back after my drug and background test, the email stated that I had passed both, and that I should be on the lookout for my next email to schedule my new hire orientation. I am now just waiting for that email. I would like to mention that Amazon has awesome benefits and everyone at the group hiring event was really nice and friendly! Interview Question – There were no interview questions; they just offered us the job. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Picker Interview - I applied through an employee referral and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Amazon.com. Interview Details – Generally, when they are interested, usually around peak season which various from building to building, they will do two phone interviews. Peek for anything going out the building, which is labeled out bound is the usually holiday seasons. Anything coming into the building, which is labeled inbound, is usually as you can expect the months following the peak of outbound. After the two phone interviews they will ask you to come in for a brief interview. The biggest things to worry about are if you have a second job they will be concerned and probably not hire you and if you seem physically unable to walk miles a day.

Page 11: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

NOTE: THIS HAS CHANGED YEARLY FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS. SOME YEARS IT IS AS BELOW AND OTHER YEARS IT WAS THE POLAR OPPOSITE! IT COMES DOWN TO NUMBERS – THE NUMBER NEEDED

VERSUS NUMBER APPLIED. If you are ready for the challenge and seem to be in okay condition you shall get hired because the turnover rate is exceptional high at

Amazon. Following employment you will have to take a SWAB DRUG TEST. Nothing major, just make sure you wash and rinse beforehand. OH AND DON'T LIE ON THE BACKGROUND CHECK EVEN IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING.

As long as you have a GED and not too major of a felony they should employee you.

Interview Question – Name a problem you had and how did you overcome it? ======================================================================

JOB SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR FRIENDS @ SAFEWAY…

LOCALIZE YOUR JOB SEARCH AND YOU CAN ENHANCE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING HIRED… STAY WITHIN 5 MILES OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD (85008) IN CENTRAL THE PHOENIX/AIRPORT AREA….AS THIS IS YOUR SEARCH LOCAL ZONE…

STEP ONE: APPLY ONLINE… http://www.careersatsafeway.com/ DID YOU KNOW? 80% of all applications get thrown away because you NEVER showed the employer that you had the skills that THEY were looking for. You got too caught up with explaining what you did instead of showing how that related to what this employer wanted. HINT: If I was an auto mechanic applying for a courtesy clerk position at Food City…the last thing I would talk about would be repairing a car…I would talk about dealing with my customers, resolving their problems… MAKE SENSE? TRY IT! IT DOES WORK MIRACLES! YOU MUST HAVE OPEN AVAILABLE TO WORK IN THIS INDUSTRY UNLESS YOU ARE APPLYING FOR PT WORK.

Page 14: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

STEP TWO: GO INTRODUCE YOURSELF …If you really want the job, demonstrate that by going over to the store and introducing yourself…If you can’t or won’t…this tells the employer everything they need to know about how seriously you REALLY want their job…NOT! Most importantly, this says that you do not care enough…that you might do this job…OR NOT? NO ONE wants to hire the person who demonstrates that they

would take this job as a last resort…everyone wants to hire the person who is excited…who likes/love the work and who appreciates the opportunity to get THIS job.

STEP THREE: EXPLAIN THAT YOU UNDERSTAND …that you are being offered an opportunity and that you appreciate it…because the employer believes that they are offering you an opportunity and most applicants (mostly those not hired) never demonstrate that they get it…little-a-lone that they appreciate it. At the end of the interview, tell the employer that you still want the job…these things make a big difference and many times…means the difference between getting hired or not.

APPLY NOW FROM OUR ONLINE CAREER CENTER AT http://www.careersatsafeway.com/ NOTE: ALL APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED AND A CRIMINAL RECORD WILL NOT DISQUALIFY YOU FROM EMPLOYMENT! The nature of the offence and how it related to the position that you are

applying for plus the age of the offence and the circumstances of the offence. TIPSTER: HUMANIZE THIS! There is a big difference in I stole to feed my babies versus I stole that big screen TV from WALMART…GET IT???? http://www.careersatsafeway.com/ ================================================================

THE OLD FAT MAN SITTING ON THE PARK BENCH

ANSWERS AN ANGRY CAMPER: “YOU LIED ABOUT SAFEWAY!”

Many times in dealing with our previously incarcerated job seekers, we have found that they tend to blame the “F” word for all their difficulties in finding re-entry employment. It is an easy associate but, NOT always true. While blaming that foul, evil letter “F” that you tattoo on your forehead every

new day of your job searching seems the correct thing to do but, you give it too much credit. Why did you NOT get hired at (say) Safeway had little to do with your background unless your past is directly linked or associated with the job you are applying for or you are totally exhibiting no remorse:

Page 16: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

• “YEA! I would steal that 55 inch TV again…Hell, I didn’t really steal it but it was Super bowl Sunday…I would have brought it back on Monday…REALLY! Would I do it again…well…not till Super Bowl Sunday…”

• “Yea, I shot him but, he deserved it! He had not right to talk to me in that tone!”

Understand that we used extreme examples but, they are true examples that applicants told their potential, new bosses at the interview. Hopefully you get the serious point of that your offensive is not the real issue but your attitude and that creates fear that the you have not learned anything in the process and that you would be more inclined to repeat the behavior as you see nothing wrong with what you originally did. If you were the hiring employer, would you want that on your watch? Would you be willing to take a risk? You know that answer! More importantly, if you did not get hired at Safeway, might have more to do with your availability. Please remember that the job description (you did read it, didn’t ya?) told you that candidates with open availability will always be on the “A” list when they select interviewees because most stores run extended hours and as the new guy, they are hiring you to work the shifts that their older, more seasoned employees don’t want to work. That’s reality! That you couldn’t work evenings, weekends or holidays have more to do with you not getting hired that the old “F” word. That you are living in Central Phoenix and the location you applied for is in Anthem might be a good reason you didn’t get selected unless they

Page 17: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

knew you were looking to move out to Anthem (and that you communicated that to that local manager before or right after you completed the application…they do not have ESP or ESPN if they don’t have cable). The application and how you filled it out would be the primary reason why you were not selected. No slight on you because 8 out of 10 applications get tossed because they were done incorrectly. If you didn’t use our Rule # 4 formula then, you did the application incorrectly. Not bragging because it is true. If you didn’t know to get the full job description, didn’t know how to break it down to the skills and abilities that the employer was looking (screening) for…if you didn’t know how to take that and create a narrative that incorporates successfully all of the key words and phrase then you missed it by a mile – unless old lady luck was shining on you or riding shotgun with you that day. If she wasn’t and you didn’t get called…then, I would say that is why they didn’t call you because you never showed the employer that you have the specific skills and abilities that they spelled out in the job description. Please remember that just because it requires no experience does not mean that the job did not require certain skills or abilities – and sometimes a lot of them. Because you were not schooled on Rule # 4, I will cut you some slack. But, that is a method of correctly filling out an application and you should become schooled in it if you want to be successful in this new age of job searching. So...not knowing the step-by-step process you took…I would still content that there were other factors rather than (our old whipping boy) the “F” word, as to why Safeway didn’t call ya…SORRY DUDE! =========================================================================

USED JOB SHACK…STARBUCKS Barista - Starbucks Interview - applied through college or university and the process took 3 days Interview Details – I kept looking for an opportunity to work for Starbucks. The person from college HR department interviewed me on the day of me walking into their office, got my resume and said she did not have any open positions. After I got home, I emailed that person with a list of reasons why I

Page 21: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

wanted to work for Starbucks on campus and why they had to take me. 2 weeks later there were a couple of open shifts and they called me back. Interview Question – Are you going to be fully committed?

Barista - Starbucks Interview – I applied online and the process took 2 weeks Interview Details – I applied online and was called 2 days later. After a brief (and unprofessional) phone interview, I was asked to come in the next day for an in store interview. After having a 15 minute interview with the assistant store manager, I was told I would receive a call to come in for training after a background check. I was called a week later to start the following Monday. Interview Question –

• What do you like best about Starbucks? Why a coffee shop? • Can you deal with this fast-paced environment?

Barista Interview Interview Details – Starbucks interviews with behavioral based questions, so questions like "Tell me about a time when..." The best way to prepare is to have

Page 22: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

multiple scenarios you can speak confidently about. Try not to ramble; the best way to answer is state the situation, what needed to be done, what you did, and the results. Interview Question – Tell me about a time you disagreed with your boss/upper.

Barista Interview - I applied through an employee referral and the process took 4 days Interview Details – Initial interview with ASM. Second with Store Manager, gave it to me on the spot. Interview Question – Most of the questions come from an interview deck. "Tell me about a time...."

• when you had a difficult customer • when you had a disagreement with a co-worker • when you took a project to completion

All behavioral questions, STAR format. They will go over the "hows" of your resume more than the "what’s". Be prepared with specific examples. Feel free to use names of coworkers to help make your stories more real and personal.

The questions I was asked:

• Tell me about a time when you had an uncooperative coworker or a coworker you didn't get along with. What was the situation, why were they uncooperative, what was the result?

• Tell me about a time you had to plan out a project. What was your role, etc.?

• -Tell me about a time you had to have a tough conversation with someone at work.

• Tell me about a time you had to bring a co-workers performance up. • They will ask probing questions about additional actions you took, why you

think coworkers were acting in a particular way, etc. Make sure you're able

Page 23: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

to get as specific as possible about these situations and your actions in them. I passed and was immediately asked for possible dates for a final interview.

Barista Interview - I applied through an employee referral and the process took 1 week Interview Details – I was referred by one of my friends who worked there and so he recommended me for an interview and so I took the steps in the hiring process. I applied online and 2 days later got called in for an interview. That same day of my interview I got two interviews on the spot with two different managers. They asked simple questions such as why Starbucks and so on. From there they told me I should receive a follow up two days after. The next day I got called in to meet with the district manager and got interview as well. Interview Question –

• Name a time where you had to deal with a ride customer and how did you handle it?

Barista Interview – I applied online and the process took 1 week Interview Details – I applied online march 18, got called on Saturday March 22nd and we scheduled an interview for Monday March 24 at 12:30pm. Got called back the next day saying i got the job. And then I had to go in this Thursday March 27th to get my schedule. Interview Questions

• What can you bring to the company? • Are you familiar with Starbucks dress code, do you have any problems? • What do you think Starbucks is about? • If you get nervous it’s okay to say it • I see you are wearing nail polish, is it going be a problem for you since we

don’t allow employees to paint their nails?

Page 24: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

Locations Near 85008 We have 30 locations near the 85008 zip code you entered… Note: La Boulange locations and Starbucks locations serving alcohol are denoted with an asterisk. FROM THE SPOOKY DESK OF GETT A. LONG, PhD.

“100 RESUMES SENT PER DAY… EIGHT HOURS ON THE COMPUTER FILLING OUT APPLICATIONS BUT, YET NO JOB INTERVIEWS…”

WHAT GIVES? Every day we have people that give their job search 1000% and they seem to never achieve the end result of getting selected for an interview. Every day they pump out resumes and do online applications by the 100’s and STILL no interviews.

Page 31: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

What’s going on? What is the solution? Can we flip their job search and turn an unsuccessful job search into a successful hire? Gett A. Long is part of the original employment gang here at the Used Job Shack and a nationally known expert (her picture is posted in most post offices in America and most locations are offering big money to find her…I guess to utilize her great talent and skills in the Workforce Community) and is here today with us to offer explanations and propose solutions. Gett told the Used Job Shack that any applicant that is sending out this volume of applications or resumes without (at least) a 30% success ratio may have well destroyed their opportunity to secure short term employment because they have saturated the local market with a bad or incorrectly done applications that they cannot (now) take back. Dr. Gett A. Long told us that the greatest cause of not getting called for interviews comes from the applicant not connecting the dots between what an employer needs and what skills that they have that related to those skills. 80% of all applications get tossed because the applicant did not connect the dots either because it was too much work to individually inform the employer that you have the required skills or that the applicant assumed that everyone knows all of the different aspects of their job. Applicants need to understand that they are not the employer’s cousin and all that the employer will ever know about them is what the applicant puts on the application – if you are not connecting the dots – that is what happened to 80% of your applications. Dr. Gett A. Long explained that problem lies in the fact that less than 1-in-4 applicants study the job description posted by the employer before they fill out the application and they are using old lady luck to open an employer’s eyes and heart to their application. Most applicants confuse or do not know the difference between skills and experience (skills are what you can do and experience is what you have done). They tend to underplay or not list skills and this is a big mistake because the employer is seeking skills over experience. Skills and experience occasional overlap but, I saw four people yesterday that would have been hired if they would have talked about their skills instead of their experience (or lack of). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALL YOU HAVE TO LOOSE IS UNEMPLOYMENT!

Page 32: 25sept A New Thursday Night Special

TIPSTER: The most important thing that you can do for your job search is get control of your anxiety and quit wasting time doing hundreds of applications for jobs you don’t really want or that are too far away or that you don’t have the skills to do. This job approach theory (regardless of what you have been told in countless urban legends or at Workforce Workshops …as I know because I was one of those who taught such things…when I was younger, didn’t care or worse didn’t know the truth)… does not work. This approach is the most destructive thing you can do…100 resumes/application sent out to employers for jobs you don’t want or can’t take are wasting your time and the employer’s time (this can come back to bite you…if later you need that job or they have a much better…dream job…you really want – as they will all too well remember you!) Sending out 100 resumes/applications for jobs you didn’t want prevents you from having the time to do (correctly) the two applications for the jobs you could have got if you had taken your time to build a specific application based upon what they employer wanted instead of mindlessly sending you one-size fit-all resume or cookie cutter application. This week alone, I saw seven people lose a job to someone less qualified than they were. WHY? Because the more qualified person didn’t take the time to customize their information to match what they employer needed. They assumed that the employer would comb through their resume and connect the dots for them…they assumed that the employer would know that an auto mechanic is very skilled in customer skills (if successful they are)…or they said that it was too much work to customize an application because they are doing 100. See the problem? If you have the ability to make yourself the perfect candidate, why wouldn't you? If this doesn't make sense, then, I hope old lady luck shines on you or start to like losing jobs to people that don’t have your skills or abilities…for the 100 resume- per-day applicants…that’s the price you are paying and it is one of the biggest reasons they are still unemployed…Sorry!
