The vessel measures 9.9 metres in length, with a beam of 3.89 metres and a draught of 0.9 metres. Designed for general harbour tug duties such as pushing, towing and shuttling stores and crew, the ‘Baringa’ has performed “above expectations” with a ten-knot speed achieved in operational duty, says Harwood Marine managing director Ross Roberts. Powered by twin Cummins 6CTA8.3- C260 engines, each rated for 150kW, key features of the vessel include keel cooling, fixed propeller nozzles and a partial tunnel arrangement required for redundancy. Combined, these features deliver “maximum speed and bollard pull with minimum draught,” according to Roberts. Built to NSCV Class 2D/2C optional, the tug has lifesaving floating devices, fire-fighting equipment and structural fire protection to survey standards, as well as standard navigation and communication systems. The anchor and windlass have been fitted at the bow, with a vertical-type Muir windlass and anchor pocket on the starboard side. The tug has bulwark bollards, two vertical bollards, one Cruciform bollard aft of wheelhouse, one Samson post at bow, fairleads and cleats and a timber pusher fender in heavy-walled steel channels at the bow. The ‘Baringa’s wheelhouse has been fitted with a bench and helm seat, stainless steel sink, under-counter fridge and sliding weatherproof doors. Vents are fitted port and starboard, and the floor and deck have been painted in a non-skid finish. Under-deck accommodation consists of two single bunks, as well as a Jabsco marine manual toilet, hand basin and shelves. Access is provided from the wheelhouse. All windows are toughened safety glass, provided by ALFAB Brisbane, with the centre window a slider-type house in frames. Additionally, the tug’s exhaust stack is bolted to the wheelhouse roof. The mast is a hinged type, with flush watertight Muir hatches fore and aft, and the engine room access hatch is raised 200 millimetres from the deck. Designed and engineered in-house by Harwood Marine – including the electrical work – the build also involved Maritime Safety Queensland surveyors and consultants Oceanic Yacht Design (OYD) Gold Coast. Based in Harwood on the Clarence River in New South Wales, Harwood Marine has provided a number of multi-cats, truckable barges and anchor pendants for MDT, which Mr Roberts says have proven “good quality products” that are “well received by the owners.” For further information contact: Harwood Marine, New South Wales.
