New South Wales-based Harwood Marinehas recently delivered the tug ‘Baringa’on behalf of Brisbane River-based MarineDiesel Traders (MDT).

The vessel measures 9.9 metres inlength, with a beam of 3.89 metres and adraught of 0.9 metres. Designed for generalharbour tug duties such as pushing, towingand shuttling stores and crew, the ‘Baringa’has performed “above expectations” with aten-knot speed achieved in operationalduty, says Harwood Marine managingdirector Ross Roberts.

Powered by twin Cummins 6CTA8.3-C260 engines, each rated for 150kW, keyfeatures of the vessel include keel cooling, fixed propeller nozzles and a partial tunnelarrangement required for redundancy.Combined, these features deliver“maximum speed and bollard pull withminimum draught,” according to Roberts.

Built to NSCV Class 2D/2C optional, the tug has lifesaving floating devices, fire-fighting equipment and structural fire protection to survey standards, as well as standard navigation andcommunication systems.

The anchor and windlass have beenfitted at the bow, with a vertical-type Muirwindlass and anchor pocket on thestarboard side. The tug has bulwarkbollards, two vertical bollards, oneCruciform bollard aft of wheelhouse, oneSamson post at bow, fairleads and cleatsand a timber pusher fender in heavy-walledsteel channels at the bow.

The ‘Baringa’s wheelhouse has beenfitted with a bench and helm seat, stainlesssteel sink, under-counter fridge and slidingweatherproof doors. Vents are fitted portand starboard, and the floor and deck havebeen painted in a non-skid finish.

Under-deck accommodation consists oftwo single bunks, as well as a Jabsco marinemanual toilet, hand basin and shelves.Access is provided from the wheelhouse. All windows are toughened safety glass, provided by ALFAB Brisbane, with the centre window a slider-type house in frames.

Additionally, the tug’s exhaust stack isbolted to the wheelhouse roof. The mast isa hinged type, with flush watertight Muirhatches fore and aft, and the engine roomaccess hatch is raised 200 millimetres fromthe deck.

Designed and engineered in-house byHarwood Marine – including the electricalwork – the build also involved MaritimeSafety Queensland surveyors andconsultants Oceanic Yacht Design (OYD)Gold Coast.

Based in Harwood on the Clarence Riverin New South Wales, Harwood Marine hasprovided a number of multi-cats, truckablebarges and anchor pendants for MDT,which Mr Roberts says have proven “goodquality products” that are “well received bythe owners.”
