The Gonski Review on the Funding of Schooling After nearly two years of consultation and submissions from numerous stakeholders, the Federal government made public its review of the funding of schooling in Australia on Monday of this week. This review was conducted by a group of eminent Australians headed up by David Gonski and in December of 2011, the Gonski panel presented the Federal government with its 345 page report.

There is therefore much to take in from this thorough report and whilst school communities across the country are pleased that it has finally been made public, I am sure that all Principals and school Boards are trying to discern what the implications of the report might be for their respective schools. It is clear from the initial comments from the Prime Minister and the Minister for Schooling that further consultation will be required before any decisions are taken about which recommendations of the report might be adopted and implemented.

The Association of Independent Schools of NSW (AISNSW) and the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA) are both key organisations which have contributed to the Gonski process. On 5 March I will attend a NSW Branch meeting of AHISA at which the implications of the Gonski Report will be a major item on the agenda. One of the keynote speakers at this meeting will be Dr Geoff Newcombe, the Executive Director of the AISNSW and following this

meeting, I plan to write a more detailed response on this important review in the newsletter.

At this stage, I join with others in welcoming the release of the report. It is a fundamental principle in my opinion that every student in a country like Australia should receive financial support from the governments as they complete their schooling, regardless of the sector in which they are enrolled.

Collection of Census Data for Government Funding Please note that we have included in this newsletter a Privacy Notice from the Commonwealth Government regarding the collection of data relevant to the current funding agreement in place with all non-government schools. This data is used to determine each school’s Socio-Economic Score (SES) which is the basis for determining how much recurrent funding the College receives per student from the Commonwealth. Please read the privacy notice carefully and feel free to contact the College if you have any questions regarding this process.

Staffing News I am pleased to announce that some of our staff are expecting children and therefore will be taking maternity leave during 2012. I take this opportunity to congratulate these staff on their good news and wish them and their families every blessing and joy as they get closer to welcoming their new babies into the world!

Congratulations to Mrs Tahlia Dahmes who is expecting her second child and will commence her maternity leave next term; Mrs Angela Nevin-Lewis who is expecting her third child and will take maternity leave from the beginning of Term 2; Ms Amy Peters is expecting her first child and will commence her maternity leave in early June; and finally Mrs Sonya McAinsh, the Director of the Early Learning Centre at the Wodonga campus is expecting her second child and Mrs McAinsh will take maternity leave from early May for a period of 12 months.

The College is well advanced in the process of interviewing applicants to cover these maternity leave positions and I will announce these appointments once they have been finalised in the coming weeks. More importantly at this stage, on behalf of the College I once again congratulate these teachers on their news and wish them well in the weeks ahead!

Junior School Swimming Carnival The details and the results will no doubt be reported elsewhere in this newsletter but I want to congratulate all of our Junior School students in Years 3

to 6 for their wonderful efforts at the annual Junior School House Swimming Carnival held at the Lavington Swim Centre last Friday! I was really impressed with the level of participation, the House spirit and some wonderful swims throughout last Friday’s carnival – well done!

I also wish to thank Mr Payne, Acting Head of Sport, Mrs Kathy Fletcher, all the staff and parents for their efforts in ensuring that the day was well organised and that it ran happily and smoothly! These days are great days on the annual calendar of a school and last Friday was no exception!

Student Leadership Notices In last week’s newsletter there were a couple of mistakes in the announcements of students in positions of leadership for 2012. I am very sorry that this occurred as I think that it is really important that we get the names of students 100% correct when we publish them in our College newsletters and other publications. I must take full responsibility for the errors and hope that these will not occur again.

For the record here are the corrections for the following Student Leadership positions:

- Sophie Cochrane is one of the Year 9 Leaders for 2012 - Senior School House Captains for: - Petts Captains: Chloe Gear and Oscar Ramsden

Vice-Captain: Michaela Russell-Larcombe - Rosborough Captains: Brianna Dawson and Paul Richards

Vice-Captain: Georgie Liston

I congratulate these students on the appointments to these leadership positions and wish them well throughout the year!

To help your child have a good start to the school day and to support the message students receive from school, punctuality at school to all lessons and events is very important. A central part of ensuring a student’s day goes well is

instructions.

how well it starts. A punctual start to the school day helps the student to organize themselves, think about the equipment they need for their lessons, have a little down time to mix with their peers or even for Senior School students to use the Library (which opens at 8.00 am) to complete some study time.

Conversely students who are late are often disorganized, flustered and more prone to making errors. The school day starts at 8.45 am when students are required to move to their classrooms or their lockers and gather their equipment for Pastoral Care Group and periods 1 and 2. Being on time and ready for the tasks ahead is an important life skill and we strongly encourage all students to learn this skill whilst at Trinity.

At times punctuality or lack thereof, at the start of the day, is out of the control of some students who are bus travellers. However, for the majority of our students, being on time is possible with a little more organization and intensity in their morning routine. I ask parents for your cooperation in ensuring your children arrive at school on time.

Along with the many pastoral and social benefits of being in attendance at Pastoral Care Group, this time of the school day is important part as many notices, information and schedules are disseminated during this time. Students who are regularly late also miss information about events and activities, they do not show up to scheduled meetings or they do not receive or return forms etc.

Shrove Tuesday at Little Tackers – Wodonga On Tuesday, 21 February the children enjoyed making pancakes. Each child worked co-operatively in a small group with teachers to mix the ingredients in the bowl. Children then helped flip the pancake and watched them cook. The best part was choosing a topping (Honey, Jam or Syrup) to put on their pancake and sit and eat with friends.

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday. As part of the Trinity community children made pancakes for Shrove

Tuesday to co-inside with lent and the countdown to Easter. Children co-operated and shared while cooking, eating and they also

stacked their own dishes on the kitchen bench.

up their sleeves, slop on some sunscreen, pull on their gloves and don their hats to work together to make our School clean and free of litter.

The children will learn a valuable lesson about the importance of a clean environment, sustainability and how working together makes a tough and sometimes unpleasant job fun and much easier to manage.

For hygiene purposes it would be appreciated if you could supply rubber or garden gloves for your child to wear during the clean-up. The students are required to wear their Sports Uniform for the day.

In Thurgoona the assembly point for the Clean Up Australia Day event to be conducted by the Thurgoona Lions Club is the Football Ground, Old Sydney Road. Should you wish to be part of the broader community effort being held on the Sunday, 4 March, I encourage you to spread the word and tell your friends and family to register for Clean Up Australia Day 2012 by going to the link http://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/

Albury Campus - Volunteer Parent Helpers Any parent, grandparent and young adult who has left school and were unable to attend the Parent Helpers’ night earlier in the term the re-run presentation will be held on Tuesday, 13 March in the 5CO Classroom at 3:30 pm.

THANK YOU! A very big thank you to all families who collected Woollies receipts as part of the Earn & Learn promotion for schools in 2011. Trinity received an overwhelming response and were able to order resources for every classroom. Again your support is appreciated! A special mention must go to Miss Peters for her superb organisation of the promotion.
