The 23d Reg-lmenta.l GP was located in the vicinity of Yangjichon,

Korea, (DT:303297), during the greater part ~! the month of July. A total

of 397 Replacamenta and 2,38 Returnees was received by the Regiment through­

out the month. A total of 26 Officers and 637 EM ware rotated to the ZI.

The Regim~t. suf'fered 43 Battle Casualties and 178 Non-Battle Casualties.

The ,23d ltCT had no logistical problems during the period 1 - 15

July, when it was in a l'eserve Area in the vi,cinity of INJE, North K~rea.

The liiain tiupply Route WclS adequate for all needs and the dupply l'oints

sufficiently close at hand to insure efficient support.

However, when the 23d HOT relieved the 5th 1iarine Regiment in posi-

tion on the 11Kansas11 line, logistical SU!)POrt of the front line units

became a major problem. The .Main Jupp~ Route runnine North, actuallY

formed the right (East) boundary of the 23d IW'I' Zone. The front line

troops maintai.1'led positions on a mountain ridge, which had an average

he;ght of over 900 meters. There were n<• lateral supply routes on which

the .battalion supply points could ~ established. To remedy this sltua-.

tion, the l08th Korean National Guard !Wtriment numbering approximately

800 men was attached to the 2,3d RCT to Frovide carrying parties. Also,

"B." Cor.1PlnY 1 2d ~ineer Battalion, whicb was in direct support of the

RCT, began to construct two lateral roads.· line .Fran the liSR at DTJll­

.345 to Hill 748 (DT27l.351) and the other from the l!SR at DT306274 ·

Northwest to DT265305. J!f-ogress on th~ roads was slow due to the rugged

tez•rain which necessitated much blasting1 and tha rainy weather which

made it necessar; to devote much time ·t.o naintainine existing roads and

bridges. A further hazard was the WYANG river which flooded. whenever
