    The period of 1 February opened with the 38th J antry

    occupying posi tiona in the vicinity of WONJU with tr :uisaiw

    of patrolling extensively to northt.(l) The 3rd Bat; ion

    dispta.ched a company size pa.trol to the northwest sa llpon

    nearing the vicinity of the lake, DB 039415, encouni 3d a

    large enemy force and became heavily engaged. ArtL ry and

    air was placed on the enemy with excellent results, :nber-

    ing an estimated 63 KIA. Reports from members of ti patrol

    indicated that the enemy was well disciplined and t1 ned.

    While artillery and air was being placed on his poe:, one, the

    enemy would take cover in his fox-hole. Immediatel~ rter the

    During the morning o:f 2 February, the 38th Infantry rew

    oeived orders from division to secure the high grourid just

    north of Hoengsong. Division further directed that on~ Bn

    would be prepared to move west of HOENGSONG to the f '4AL

    area to establish blocking positions on the QQ line~ )

    The 3rd Bn, leading element o:f the ROT, followed closely

    by the let Bn,, departed for HOENGSONG. At 022330, !:ct"l:l. units

    closed into their assigned areas. The 2nd Bn, minua "F" Com-

    pany, utilizing the transportation used by the leading ele-

    ments, arrived at HOENGSONG at 030500. "F" Company remained

    Support Force #21 was

    given the mission of fur~ishing close-in security for the

    15th FA En, which was in suppQrt of the 8th ROK Division.(l)

    At 050800 February, the Netherlands Detachment was di-

    rected to occupy defensive positions north of HOENaSONG in

    order to allow the 1st En, in position in this area, to be

    relieved for use as Support Force #21. This relief was

    accomplished during the afternoon hours, at which time the

    1st En withdrew to an assembly area approximately 2000 yards

    south of HOENGSONG. (2) During the evening of 5 February,

    the 38th ROT was directed to effect a reconnaissance of pos&-

    .ible "blocking positions" for one battalion, in the vicinity

    ~of S.AEMAL. Meanwhi;Le, .. the 38th FA En (- 0 Btry), was relieved (3)

    from attachment of the 38th ROT and placed in general support.

    At 060730 February, Support Force Baker departed on its

    mission as prescribed by the 8th ROK Commander and by 1200

    hours,. they had reached the vicinity of S.AEMAL. Reports re-

    ceived from various intelligence sources indicated the enemy

    was utilizing the village of CHANG1~ as a headquarters; the

    1st Ranger Company was given the mission of going to the

    village to i:nf'lict as many casualties as possible and burn

    the village. The 3rd Bn, in position north and east of

    HOENGSONG, was directed to move to the vicinity of SAEI'4AL ani

    effect the relief of the 21st .IDK Regime11t.

    ,.t-At 062100 February, the .3rd Bn closed into the vicinity

    ot SAEMAL In conjunction with the 3rd En 1 s departure from

    HOENGSONG, the Regimental right boundry was moved approx~

    ima.tely 3000 yards to the west; the 187th Regiment,' on our ,vi-:""

    right, moved elements of their regiment into the existing

    gap; in addition, 11A!' Company, Netherlands Detachment, Y.ras

    \' The company suffered t'\'/0 '1L~ and accounted for an estimated

    50-100 enemy KIA; in addition,, they destroyod 20 enemy rifles

    and captured 5 IviG' s and 9, burp guns. (2) -

    At approximately 081400 February, Support Team. Baker report--

    ed they were engaged '\'lith an estimated 200 enemy in tile vicinity

    of CHANGI~. Tb.e action,, mainly small arms and long range tank

    fire, (.friendly),., continued for approximately tv10 hours,..._at v;hich

    time '~L';!. Company,. minus one platoon, irithdreiv to an assembly

    area;; subsequently, they wer~ joined by the platoon that had

    remained behind to disperse the enemy.. Friendly casualties for
