In the mid-1940s, a small group of breeders started collecting and breeding red Angus cattle in order to implement the then new technology of scientific breeding through performance testing. The Forbes’ was the first and largest, and George Chiga was also a leading thought leader. They

used the red cattle because they were purebred cattle that had been barred from the black Angus registry in 1918, and as such had known strengths and weaknesses.

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) was formed in 1954 as a bold experiment to select cattle based on objective measures instead of the fads that ruled the show ring, which at that time was represented in the belt buckle era. The number of firsts in the founding of the Association were many, including the requirement of weaning weights for registration, open AI, collection of yearling weights, adjustment of weights, and no nurse cows.

Waldo Forbes, the first president of the RAAA summarized the objectives of the Association: “The policy of the Association is to discourage the more artificial practices in purebred cattle production such as over fitting (a term at the time used for over feeding) and to place its faith instead in objective tests, consisting for the most part of comparisons within herds of factors of known economic importance and known heritability. By making this an integral part of the registration system, Red Angus breeders feel that even faster progress can be made toward the ultimate goal of more efficient beef production.”

This is not to say the Association was opposed to showing cattle as a form of promoting the breed. In 1956, the RAAA held its first National Performance Show in Fort Worth. Also implemented at the show was ultrasound to measure fat thickness to check for “over fit” cattle, which was such a problem in the belt buckle era. The placings were arrived at by a combination of objective performance measures and subjective scoring. Red Angus continues this tradition of performance shows today by supplying judges with EPDs to supplement their visual appraisal.

The focus of the Association from the beginning was servicing commercial producers and the embrace of crossbreeding. Associate memberships were offered to commercial producers right from the start “to foster a closer working relationship and communication between the segments of the industry.” This focus of the RAAA continues to this day.

Another thrust by many of the founders of the Association was “Angus for the Americas” as red was the common sense, heat tolerant color for North, Central and South America. This dream would be realized in the late 1990s and early 2000s when Red Angus became the undisputed leader in export semen sales primarily to South America.

This objective and commercial focus early on attracted some of the largest, brightest and most colorful people in the industry. The list of these early members this new Association attracted is long and impressive including Forbes, Chiga, Beeby, Lorenzen, Redd, Haugen, Whitely, Bieber, Schuler, Leachman, Chase, Pioneer Seed Company, McPhee, Borland, Andersen/Ford, and Halfman. Most of these operations are still in business today represented by the second and third generation. The opening of the herdbook also brought in some of the most forward looking commercial producers into the breed including Leland, Robbins, Lane, Rolland and Wedel.

The 1970s were good for the breed because when the type changed to larger framed, heavier muscled cattle, the Red Angus breed was already producing this type of cattle. When the frame race started in the 1980s most Red Angus breeders kept their cattle middle of the road relying on their loyal commercial bull market to pay the bills.

Despite the requirement of collecting performance data, major progress in economically important traits did not occur until mid-1980s when the Association became the second breed to implement an animal model to produce meaningful EPDs on the entire herdbook. Since then, the genetic progress of the Red Angus cattle has been nothing short of astounding. Red Angus also took a different path with its EPDs, trying to produce the fewest EPDs possible, to comprehensively describe the Economically Relevant Traits (ERT) for reproduction, growth, carcass and maintenance.

This balanced approach paid off with Red Angus commercial females currently being the hottest thing on the market.

Starting in the mid-1990s, RAAA entered another age of growth and popularity that is still enjoyed today. Red Angus was the common sense answer coming out of the frame race that had negatively affected other breeds. Also, then RAAA executive Bob Hough hired many key personnel, outstanding leadership was supplied by the membership, and the association would work closely with Colorado State University for key genetic breakthroughs. The list of accomplishments is long and impressive. In 1995 alone Total Herd Reporting (THR) was implemented; the first reproduction EPD was released in Stayability; the commercial marketing program was implemented; the Feeder Calf Certification Program became the first USDA Processed Certified Program making Red Angus qualified for Angus branded beef programs; and RAAA negotiated the first value based grid with a major packer.

Other accomplishments quickly followed starting with the Junior program quickly becoming revitalized. In 1996, RAAA released its first carcass EPDs and would later become the first association to combine carcass and ultrasound into a single EPD. In 2003, the goal of objectively describing reproduction was completed when RAAA released the industry’s first reproduction sire summary, and in 2004, the industry’s first Maintenance EPD was released. This completed the goal of covering the basic areas of ERTs of reproduction, growth, carcass and maintenance.

In 2005, a group of breeders got together to organize a junior show during the summer since the national junior Red Angus show was held generally during the winter in conjunction with the Red Angus national show. They formed the North American Junior Red Event outside the association to conduct a nationwide show as well satellite leadership events. This show has quickly grown becoming a substantial and well attended event.

At the end of Hough’s tenure in 2007, the breed had grown from the twelfth largest breed to the fourth. Comstock would succeed Hough and fulfill a long sought after goal of forming a strategic partnership with other breeds. In 2010, this resulted in the American Simmental Association and RAAA’s formation of International Genetic Solutions, which now produces across-breed EPDs on the same base for the majority of this nation’s breeds. This means there is now a common EPD language for twelve breeds and more animals are added to this database every year than any other analysis.

The success of Red Angus seedstock breeders’ commercial customers has always been a primary driver of the Association in both genetics and services. This was verified in a 2015 Journal of Animal Science research article confirmed that Red Angus outsold all other breeds at video auctions. Between IGS and Red Angus’ THR program, Red Angus has the most precise and reliable EPDs in the industry. Red Angus has a new, universally respected CEO with Tom Brink joining the Association. The future is big and bright for the Red breed!

Red Six Mile Signature 295B has garnered more attention than any other bull calf from the Six Mile program since Sakic was at the side of his dam. The young bull is from an ET female from the foundation Selma 384F cow family that is in place in the Six Mile herd. The maternal grandsire, Red Six Mile Unleashed 595U, in turn, is now deceased and was the Junior Champion Yearling Bull at the prestigious 2009 World Angus Forum. Furthermore, Red Selma of Six Mile 358X has an average weaning weight index of 111. Her first calf, a heifer, was purchased by John Nelson of Oklahoma. Her second calf sold for 10,000 to a large commercial program in Saskatchewan. Red Six Mile Grand Slam 130Z. his sire, was the 21,000 selection of Semex in the 2013 Six Mile Bull Sale. This first calf crop is phenomenal and this calf is the first progeny to sell from the young breeding sire.

Red Six Mile Signature 295B is one of the great Red Angus bulls to emerge in some time. He is an overpowering presence at all shows so far. He is an impressive combination of the best phenotype and genotype available in the industry today. He has a powerful look that personifies his brilliant breeding from his dominant and proven ancestors.

He is rich in rarefied blood that courses through the veins of the most exceptional Red Angus individuals in the breed. His future is predetermined by the contribution of both his sire and dam to this unique and explosive herd bull.

This deep, red breeding bull is destined to carry the Red Angus breed to a new and meaningful position within the beef cattle industry.

Selling full possession and half semen interest, plus exclusive semen packages.Semen will remain off the open market until January 2018.This is unique opportunity to purchase this tremendous son of the highly sought-after Peek-A-Boo cow. Peek-A-Boo is one of the

most talented and top-achieving females in the SLGN program. As a heifer, she was named champion or reserve champion female at the National Western Stock Show, North American International Livestock Expo, Fort Worth Stock Show and Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. More importantly, she has consistently out-produced herself with her cookie-cutter females that always stand out in the pasture. We have sold 15 daughters over seven years and they have averaged $26,000. Majority of those females have gone on to become donors for other operations. The quality and uniformity of her progeny, both bulls and females, are amazing. SLGN Yardmaster 125Y his sire, was the $55,000 sale topper in the 2012 Cattlemen’s Bull Sale. His first calf crop were sale toppers across the United States and are now in production and proving to be an impressive combination of the most desirable phenotype and genotype in the industry. Bojangles is powerful from end-to-end and stands on a sound foot and has great substance of bone. He presents himself with a very long smooth-made front third, then explodes with dimension from his shoulders back. He certainly does not lack in muscle with his great width down his top and through his hip. He has great extension from his pins to his twist and when he sets into motion is as free and easy as they come. SLGN Bojangles 479B is a remarkable breeding bull for any progressive breeding program.

These two genetic forces have merged successfully into this exceptional breeding bull.

GF Missionary Man 133 is smooth as glass, fluid and athletic in his movement, utilitarian in his structure and sports an eye-popping profile and image. The harmoniously blended phenotype and genotype make this one of the great additions to this Western Heritage genetic line up.

This young herd-sire prospect is richly geneticly derived from the breed’s most noted and respected. For years, the genetic linkage represented both top and bottom side of the pedigree family lineage has emerged as some of the most respected throughout the industry. This striking young Red Angus bull has the pieces and parts that have assembled together in creating a magnificent individual. The perfectly balanced show bull has the symmetry and profile that aided in achieving the accolades of this excellent young bull. His fault-free image is easily noted when analyzing this dark red breeding bull.

CHIP Ring of Fire 360A, and the perfect lines of this herd sire, has had a significant impact of the improvement and genetic acceleration

in the LeDoux program. The son of PZC TMAS Firestorm 1800 ET is stamping his progeny with the same perfection as is demonstrated in the phenotype of the great breeding bull. Paternal brothers and sisters are among the most genetically advanced in the LeDoux program. His dam, AHL Rose 43W, is one of the great foundation females in the LeDoux herd. Her influence is intertwined throughout the genetic profile of the LeDoux cowherd.

Red Rainbow Lois 53A is a unique breeding female. As a calf, she was a knock-out. She has emerged as a leader in all aspects of production through her dependability of pedigree and absolutely eye-popping profile. She carries forth the breeding superiority of the Red Rainbow Lois cow family line that has proven to be a genetic phenomenon throughout the industry.

He is a unique blend of dazzling eye-appeal, muscle mass, performance, structure soundness—all supported by extraordinary feet and legs with flawless design and function. His genetic strength from both the sire and dam side add tremendous breeding value to this young herd sire. He is backed with one of the strongest cow families in the breeding herd, and the family members have great udders, efficient

feet placement, rib capaciousness and marvelous hair coats. His sire, Red U-2 Justified 235Z, is one of significance among the

bull battery at Bar-E-L Angus. He was purchased from the 2011 U-2 Bull Sale, and was the top pick for herd addition at a $17,000 sale price. His sons are among the most appreciated by cattlemen-which excel in muscle expression, performance and body capacity.

Bar-E-L High Tide 63C was born into the strong cow family known as the Bessie’s. Red Bar-E-L Bessie 91W, the dam, was the first offspring from her dam, Red Bar-E-L Bessie 259T. She, in turn, is the dam of the Junior Bull Calf Champion and President’s Classic Champion at the 2015 Western Canadian Agribition, Red Bar-E-L Apollo 144C.

Red Bar- E-L Bessie 67B, a full sister to Red Bar E-L High Tide 63C and high selling female in the 2015 Bar- E-L Bull and Select Female Sale was purchased by Brian Severance, ND.

From the pens in Denver, the J6 Farms program is represented by some of the most complete and breed improving bulls. The individuals are from the most accomplished cow families in the industry, and the sires represented are among the breed’s best in North America. When surveying the pedigree depth of each and every one, obvious uniformity and breed strength becomes evident. While the uniformity of the individuals is vividly apparent, the pedigrees of the bulls are from a wide array of the most respected blood in North America.

Sons of J6RA BKE Indeed are calving ease herd sires that represent problem free genetics. Sons and daughters sired by the popular breeding bull have been exceptional breeding stock for progressive breeding herds across North America.

Sons of Six Mile Taurus 519A are among the first calf crop of the 2014 National Western Grand Champion Bull. His offspring are stamped with the phenotype of the great champion, and the sons in the pens are among his most ambitious achievers.

LSF Boxed Beef 9063W is one of the great breeding sons of Messmer Packer 500B. His influence on the breed is obvious when appraising his sons in the J6 Farms pens.

Red U2 Mission 61W has proven to be an exciting source of the breed’s most accomplished individuals. Few breeding bulls have sired as many competitive and appreciated individuals as this son of LJC Mission Statement P27. He is from the progressive U2 Stormy cow family that has been a reliable and over-powering source of Red Angus breed leaders.

Generations of the most coveted lines are wrapped up in the genetic fiber of this proven Red Angus herd sire, and January 8 is the day to obtain the blood from this magnificent sire of champions.

The sons and daughters continue to pace the progress at the U2 Ranch. He was the top-selling bull in the 2010 U2Bull Sale when he was purchased by Geis Angus. The quality and uniformity of his progeny—both bulls and females are amazing. His

offspring have topped both female and bull sales across the North American continent. FOB Alta Genetics, Calgary, Alberta.

It goes without much explanation and footnote information, that this is one of the most important breeding females recorded in the pedigree inventory at the Red Angus Association of America. The pedigree depth and measured performance of the offspring of this great female puts her in a class of one. Decades of selective breeding and mating decisions have been culminated into the rock-solid foundation genetic excellence that is offered with this lot—Bieber Laura 158W.

The Bieber Red Angus Ranch has not offered a female of this caliber in over 20 years. Bieber Laura 158W, over time, has emerged as one of the strongest pillars of genetic notoriety in the entire breed. Her individual pedigree and data record speaks for itself, and the genetic sweep and amplitude of her sons and daughters will even further solidify this female as one of the all time greats in the industry.

Bieber Laura 158W is one of the most coveted females at Bieber Red Angus Ranch. She is in the number one position of the donor inventory in the breeding program, and all the more of a rarity, she is offered in her entirety while just now embarking on her amazing career.

She is the dam of Bieber Hard Drive Y120, co-owned with Select Sires. She is the dam of Bieber Deep End B597, leased to Genex. Bieber Deep End B597, in turn, sold this past fall as was leased to Genex and was featured in the Genex November ARA magazine ad on the back cover. Further, The Bieber breeding plan for the spring includes Bieber Deep End B597 in volume. Bieber Hard Drive Y120 is one of the most significant breeding sires. Over 180 progeny were weaned this fall in the Bieber program with more to come. Bieber Laura 158W is on track to produce

more outstanding progeny with the natural calf she weaned and several ET sons currently on test.

The data of this great breeding female sets her apart from the crowd. She is in the top 24% of the breed for Herd Builder and top 1% for Gridmaster. Furthermore, she ranks in the top 20% of the breed for CED and top 14% for BW. She harbors these elite tabulations in an overwhelmingly attractive phenotype, stands on outstanding feet and legs, lactates from a perfectly conformed udder attachment and has a spectacular disposition.

Trans Ova Genetics at Yackley Ranches has agreed to let the cow stay in continued IVF donor collection if the new buyer so desires.

BKT Larkeisa M288 is one of the most celebrated Red Angus females in the Rust Mountain View program. This mature female has been responsible for some of the top quality offered in the Rust program. BKT Larkeisa M288 raised the 2014 high-selling Red Angus open heifer at the North Dakota Red Select Sale for $15,000, purchased by Thomas Ranch and Slack Farms, both of South Dakota. In addition, she has made a big impact on the Rust Simmental program, with several halfblood progeny topping past sales and making great additions to the percentage Simmental program.

A son, Red Rust North Dakota 27B, by C-T Grand Statement 1025, was the selection of SSS Red Angus and Blairs.Ag of all the bulls selling this spring through the bull sale. He is now a featured herd sire in these two great Canadian herds.

These exciting embryos represent the Rainbow program in its finest hour. Countless breed champions and leaders have been generated from this extraordinary herd—and none more powerful than the genetics offered with these embryos. The full-sib to these embryos is Red Rainbow Lark 2B, the reigning Grand Champion Female of the 2015 National Red Angus Show. The exceptional female is a combination of the breed’s best that has been generated from the Rainbow herd.

SSS Endorse 639X has proven to be one of the greatest breeding bulls-a constant source of the strongest performance lines available. His influence has been prolifically scattered throughout North America, and perhaps his most noted achievement is the progeny from Red Stewart Lark 602S. She, in turn, has been one of the stars of the Rainbow herd. Her contribution to the breed has been immeasurable.

The Shuey Stock Farms offers this extremely rare embryo offering that cannot be duplicated anywhere. The dam, Damar Sofie X703, was calf champion at the Iowa State Fair and reserve division champion at the Fort Worth Stock Show, both as a calf and as a bred heifer. She has continued to be one of the most prolific producers in the Shuey donor herd, and her progeny continue to pace the breed with her level of progeny quality. A sampling of her progeny include the 2014 Reserve National Champion Bred & Owned Female and donor, Marilyn; and most recently the Reserve National Bull Calf Champion at the 2015 National Red Angus Show. The influence of this great donor cow is obviously displayed throughout the Shuey Stock Farms breeding program.

The embryos selling are out of the top-selling cow at the 2015 Las Rojas Sale. They will be sired by the famed PZC TMAS Firestorm who has generated so many champions and high sellers.

U2 Ms Dynamo 382W has been a top producer at U2 Ranches in Alberta. She has produced two bulls for the U2 Bull Sales in recent past. One was a top seller at $11,000 and son of TKO. A daughter of 382W, U2 225Y, is one of the most notable young cows at U2. 225Y has a powerful 2015-born son of U2 Reckoning that will be a featured bull in the April U2 bull sale. Another daughter of 225Y was our favorite bred heifer in U2’s 2016 bred heifer pen. 225Y and her dam 382W have been cows quickly picked out by U2 visitors. The sire of 382W is Big League 544R, a well known Canadian bull that has generated many successful Red Angus cattle. He has strong maternal value, his daughters and sons can be found in many pedigrees throughout Canada.

382W was selected by Christy, out of the pasture at U2 in the summer of 2015, and noted for her tremendous body depth, power and dark red color. She is perfect footed, moderate sized and very maternal oriented. 382W can generate show prospects or powerful seed stock. These will be the first embryos produced out of this new donor dam for Thomas Ranch and Las Rojas. Embryos will be guaranteed available by May 10.

Selling an IVF Cycle

SLGN Stony’s Savannah is remembered during her show career as one of the best females of any breed anywhere. The female, with Cassie Johnson at the halter, was selected as a young heifer calf that would become the reigning female champion at the three big shows. A great accomplishment as a young heifer, she has eclipsed that record based upon her progeny from a variety of different sires. Her offspring have been in great demand, and she has many years of extraordinary production in front of her.

Polzin Cattle purchased this stellar donor female through the J6 Legacy Collection Sale. The next genetic production from this great cow is offered as Lot 37. Savannah will continue to be housed at Polzin Embryo Center at the seller’s expense. Buyer will receive an IVF cycle with a guarantee of at least seven embryos resulting in a minimum of three pregnancies.
