Page 3: 2014 Western Exposure Sale

It is with great pleasure and anticipation to present to you the 2014 offering of the first ever Western Exposure Female Sale. When I was considering the sale I knew, without a doubt, that I had to bring my best or I was going to be one and done. We are a commercial cow operation with a horrible addiction of trying to raise show steers. For the past fifteen years we have been keep-ing many clubby type females back with hopes of raising the next great one.

We have good intentions, but usually they get turned out with a bull and never see the straw of BIM or MAB they anxiously await. The high hopes of the next Denver Champion are lost to the realization that we eat because of the 600 lb. calf and not the fuzzy eared freak. With 2,500 commercial cows, only one hired guy, and a Border Collie that’s smarter than your honor student, there just aren’t enough hours to get it all done.

With that being said, please realize that this group of females have been selected from the heart of our herd. They were not under special treatment the past year or in a dry lot on the fat ration. The majority of the cows have weaned a calf this fall or were fall calvers and spun for the spring. They stayed out on grass till November and are in perfect condition. The bred heifers ran on grass until mid October in the high country of central Idaho. They have not been pampered and will not require any special treatment. They are bred to produce, not just picture. I feel anyone could incorporate these western genetics into their herd and feel the financial impact the first year and for years to come.

I believe there are many potential donor candidates offered as well as the start of many soon to be famous cow families. The offering is deep with a heavy influence of Simmental, Angus, and Club Calf genetics that can be an asset for any progressive herd. I thank you for your interest in the cattle, and please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions. - Trevor Roche

“We couldn’t be happier with the cattle we bought from Roche Cattle Company. The semi load of bred heifers calved in February 2013 in our hoop barn. They were very quiet and gentle to work with, easy calving, and extremely maternal. The weaning weights were through the roof and the keeper heifers look to have some real promise for the future of

our herd. You can’t go wrong with sound, functional cattle that are maternally and performance driven with elite show pedigrees. Thanks again for sharing your genetics and a piece of your program. It was great doing business with you.”

- Andy and Larry Platner from Lisbon Iowa

1 SIRE: WCC REVELATION DAM: WYOMING WIND

Two years ago we stopped at the local sale barn to buy some Angus cattle from a dispersion sale. The breeder had both Charolais and Angus cattle and was selling everything with four legs. After selling all the purebred cattle they had two pair of purebred Angus cows with week-old Charolais ET calves on their side. I’m not going to act like I had a clue what we were buying because I still don’t really know what I got; but I think we got a good one. Last fall when we were shipping calves whitey was heading towards the truck when I cut her off just because I heard the Char deal was heating up and I wanted to participate. This white beauty is as sexy fronted as any crossbred known to man. Plus, she has the square hip and rear leg set that Char breeders only dream about. Yes, she’s a purebred and, yes, she is the real deal! Seller reserves the right to one successful flush at the seller’s expense and buyer’s convenience with an equal split after 6 eggs.

The next two lots are out of a Meyer GD from the historic Yardley herd. The donor is a knock out and I don’t expect anything different from the daughters. Lot 3 is a tank. She is so powerful and massive for her stature. She is a donor candidate for sure and will do great things.

If we were smart and followed the pig industry on making cattle all look the same, we would use this heifer as a prototype. You can breed this heifer so many different ways and get successful results and expose her to any environment and she will thrive. She is super big middled, soft muscled and just the right size to keep her condition and raise a big calf. This girl is going to be a future donor and you can take that to the bank. Her pedigree is stamped with maternal excellence. Next Step females are awesome, then add a shot of Doc with the backing of the best Meyer cow on the place! This will be a cash cow! Don’t weaken here. She will raise a high dollar fuzzy, but you better get a pile of females out of this one. Ten years from now the new proud owner will be talking about this future cow family. Dr. Oz is a Dr. Who son from Bob May that has sired some outstanding females around here. They are big bellied with a gob of hair and sexy front. Nothing different here, she’s stout, hairy and has the mother cow look. Not the typical fuzzy one that just oozes “calf starver” if she has him alive! Her mother sells as lot 88.

5 SIRE: LEES OUTLAW DAM: BSAR JEWELL 005 x OCC GENERAL

Outlaw is a purebred Angus bull owned by Lee Cattle in Colorado and probably one of the most consistent Angus bulls we have used. He drops a load of muscle in his offspring and gives them the cool look. She is pretty darn complete and extremely stout for being a purebred. Her mother is one of our best Angus cows and a full sister to our lead Angus donor that averages 24 eggs per flush. I am going to sell her, but if someone wanted to partner on her give me a call. I think the world of her and would love to make her a donor! I’ll flush her, and you sell the overpriced show heifers. 6 SIRE: BRILLIANCE DAM: TC FREEDOM

Brilliance cattle are flat working out west and here’s the prime example. Just the right size, stout made, big topped, good boned and balanced so well the only flaw I see is that her eyelashes could be another quarter inch. Not only does she have the look of a great cow, she was also the Grand Champion Angus female at the Utah State Fair. Owning this girl would be the same as marrying a beauty queen that can cook, clean and bring home the bacon...sounds like a good deal to me. These next two lots come from a set of purebred cows we bought out of Texas during the horrific drought they suffered a few years back. The whole herd originates from Express breeding with many of the cows stamped with the EX on the shoulder. This heifer is as nice made as an Angus comes. She’s cocky fronted, big middled and stout. Recently people have been going crazy over these cattle that keep their condition all year long. They usually need a stool to reach the water trough and only raise a 900 pound yearling bull calf. That doesn’t work in the commercial world. I’ve also never met someone that couldn’t ride a roller coaster without disco boots that wasn’t an easy keeper themselves. This type of cattle needs more size but with the same fleshing ability. Cattle need to grow! This heifer is a prime example of one that will do exactly that. Take this one home and look smart. I’ll be one of the last people to ever admit I like a Hereford, but I think we brought a pretty good one to town. About two years ago I bought a semi load of these pee hearted, white faces and sorted off the best to breed clubby. This thing is an absolute tank and has all the parts to raise those high dollar, Hereford marked steers. I flushed her to Carpe Diem last spring and got 8 eggs. The opportunities with this cow are endless! I mean that literally because I have no clue what her pedigree is! Once you get her home you can call her a Meyer, Full Flush, Chill Factor or Beefmaster, the opportunities are endless. I found her in a group of 400 commercial cows we had out in Jordan Valley, Oregon. A 450lb weaned calf in Jordan Valley is a monster. Bear Grylls would last about 8 hours in this country. To think this beast was roaming around there since her first calf heifer days speak volumes about her. No round bale feeder or scope of silage needed to keep her alive. She has survived on a grasshoppers ration! Based on her bangs tattoo, there is a good chance she is an Ali, but I’m not guaranteeing anything. I flushed her this spring to Monopoly and got 11 eggs. Her natural calf out of some sorry bull roaming the desert sold for $2,000 this fall. I can’t even imagine how good her Monopoly 2 calf will look this spring. Ever noticed how the top cows in most sales have over 100k in sales by the age of 4! I’m sure that has happened, but let’s be honest. I actually have no data on this cow. She was my pick of the bred heifers a few years back but has always been out and about and never close to home. She has never been AI bred. She could be the next great one!
