MyPB at Stanground

Academy Peter Bibb

Why MyPB What did we want to improve?

Why we got involved

Stanground took part in a very successful, limited

time project to use year 7 PE lessons to teach

for “resilience”

We saw that, even in a short space of time the

explicit focus had an impact on the students in

PE and across English and Maths, too.

We wanted more of this………………..!

What we wanted to change/improve

• Pupils’ awareness of social skills in PE and in everyday life.

• Improving the skills of all pupils and helping them achieve this.

• Improving the attitudes of the Year 7 & 8 Year groups

We tried to achieve our aims through:

A half-termly focus on specific social skills.

Where pupils are graded for a social skill each half

term.

Pupils record evidence from PE and other lessons.

This is linked into the whole school PSHE

programme (called “Projects” at Stanground)

How it worked

“ In hockey whenever the ball hit my

foot, I put my hand up and said what

happened, you have to, really, don’t

you?

Connor (year 7)

Integrity

“ In fitness testing I had to work in a

small group, do the test and give in

the result, without staff checking up

on me.

“ In computing at the beginning of year 8, I

never contributed to lessons, but I learnt

in PE that people listen if you know your

stuff, and now I am more confident to

speak

Mica (year 8)

Communication

“ I motivated my friend to join the after

school club and she was imbarist

(sic) because she didn’t know

anyone

Courtney (year 8)

Motivating and influencing others

A little motivation

Image

• We asked the students to comment on their use

of social skills in PE

• We asked them to rate their social skills in PE

• We asked them straight questions like…

• Jack, what does “responsibility” in PE mean?

Seeking feedback

“ Making sure the task is completed

no matter how strange my partner’s

behaviour is

Jack (year 8)

Responsibility (and my personal favourite

quotation!)
