director’s welcomeGREETINGS 2015 FESTIVAL-GOERS!

On behalf of the Wildflower Festival Board of Directors, I would like to welcome each of you. We are looking forward to reconnecting with Festival veterans and meeting newcomers!

We have put together a very full program for you this year. We’ll kick off our sea-son on May 29 with the “Friday Adventure Hike”- a full-strength, full day of hiking in the most beautiful backcountry you can imagine. If this is your thing, you’ll have five more Fridays to hike at higher and higher elevation as the flowers move up the hillsides through the summer.

Starting June 26, you’ll be able to take a 4x4 Jeep Tour of Paradise Divide most Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays through mid-September. This 26-mile trip takes you up to Paradise Divide at 11,000 ft for mind-blowing views and wildflowers! Other early and late season events include Saturday’s Wildflower Walks, and a ski lift-facilitated hike to see the Wildflowers of Crested Butte Mountain Resort on Saturdays and Sundays.

The week-long Festival gets underway on Monday, July 13 at the Crested Butte Community School. Over 150 events will take place during this week, and you’ll meet at the Community School for all of them unless we specify otherwise. Please be sure to arrive for your events 15 minutes early. Your leader will gather your group and give you a briefing before heading out. While you’re waiting for your group, please shop our “Blossom Boutique” for fun gifts, clothing, books, and cards.

It is the mission of the Wildflower Festival to give you a rich, recreational, and educational experience. We’ve got all kinds of resources to help you delve into the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado.” Our “Handy Dandy Wildflower Guides” and “Bloom Locator” were produced with grant funding from the Town of Crested Butte and the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley. This summer, we will launch our “Crested Butte Wildflower Locator App” for finding and identifying Crested Butte wildflowers using your phone.

We’ve produced this Program Guide in partnership with the Crested Butte News, and it now contains all kinds of helpful information and advertising by local business-es that are ready to help make your summer special, easy, convenient, tasty, and fun! Thank you to the Crested Butte News and all the advertisers for helping create this guide.

We are grateful to all of our sponsors, workshop leaders, volunteers, and members who have made our 29th Festival, possible! We so appreciate you all.

Many thanks!Sue Wallace, Executive DirectorLiz Wigginton, Assistant Director Liz & Sue

CONSERVATION CLASSES

Most of the events that are offered at the Wildflower Festival support our mission of education, and 2015 brings a new slate of classes focusing on conservation. Taught by Bradley Wigginton, a graduate student at Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, “The Native Landscape” (offered Monday and Saturday, July 13 and July 18) explores how successful stewardship of our wildflower resource depends on effective weed management strategies employed at all levels from County to your own private land or yard.

In “Mapping Invasives: A Citizen Science Project” (offered Sundays, June 28 and August 2), Bradley will teach students non-native plant identification skills, how to use GPS units, and the importance of community assistance in citizen science projects. The data collected during this program will be used to interpret the dispersal of non-native plant species and will help direct future management strategies through community efforts.

NEW RUNNING EVENTS

For the first time, the Wildflower Festival will be offering a few events for the ultra-runner in you! Beth Carter, local wildflower guide and endurance running enthusiast, will lead three events this summer that take you fast and light into the high country. On Tuesday, July 14, Beth will take a group of runners on the “Point Lookout Ultra Run,” a beautiful 9 ½ mile run that winds through one of the most spectacular meadows in the valley.

For some real high country scenery and adventure, Beth will lead a run into North Pole Basin, a protected and remote bowl, full of alpine flowers. After a hearty dinner and an overnight spent in a backcountry hut, Beth will take the group through West Maroon, Frigid Air and Hasley Passes- where the most abun-dant fields of flowers are found. Beth will also instruct her students in the emerg-ing field of Smartphone photography, so runners will want to pack their phones in addition to their running shoes! This running event, “Extreme Running, Botaniz-ing, and Smartphone Photography Overnight Hut Trip” is being offered Thurs-day and Friday, July 16 and 17, and Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9.

FACT! Watch your step and keep to the trail! Plants aren’t as hardy and resilient as they may appear. Many alpine plants may grow only half an inch in five years, and could be 10 years old before

flowering and producing seed for the next generation. One careless step off trail could destroy decades of growth.

FACT! Not all flowers bloom in the heat of summer. In April, Pasque

flowers poke through snow to give a soft, purple hue to their melting surroundings. They survive cold by staying low to the ground

1% for open space

 PRESERVING WILDFLOWER TERRITORY FOREVER

What’s your wildflower pleasure? Is it taking a 4x4 jeep ride to the top of Para-dise Divide to drink in the otherworldly color of the rosy paintbrush? Perhaps it’s a hike or bike ride on the Lupine Trail where Mule’s Ear Sunflowers and Lupine cre-ate rolling seas of purple and yellow over the hillsides. Or it might be something as simple as a saunter on the Woods Walk to smell the Sweet Cicely and marvel at the community of Columbine.

While the vistas, trails and fields of flowers in Crested Butte are easy to come

by, their very existence points to an important local program that helps to assure these assets will not change – forever.

The 1% for Open Space program is a voluntary 1% donation on top of products and services when you visit the more than 100 participating local busi-nesses. This money is collected and granted to requesting organizations for the permanent preservation of land in Gunnison County. Protection of these lands also protects our spectacular views, recreational access, wildlife habitat, ranching heritage, rural lifestyle, valued watershed and ecosystem integrity. And of course, an important part of this is preserving the territory where wildflowers love to grow.

To date, the 1% for Open Space program has preserved over 5,200 acres in

40 projects throughout Gunnison County – from high mountain meadows to roll-ing ranchlands. Over $2M have been given to organizations such as the Crested Butte Land Trust, Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy, Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, Town of Crested Butte, Gunnison County, Trout Unlimited and Trust for Public Land for land preservation purposes.

So no matter what kind of wildflower is your favorite, if you love to just sit and sketch them at sunset, or hike for hours through them, 1% for Open Space funds have helped make these lands available to you. Join in a 1% for Open Space Wildflower Festival Workshop to learn more, and where a portion of the proceeds goes to help fund these crucial efforts. Be sure and patronize participating busi-nesses (listed in this program guide) and add your support by contributing the voluntary 1% donation with your purchase. Without them, and you, none of these eye-popping opportunities would be possible.

1% for Open Space Workshops with the Wildflower Festival:

• Happy Hour Sunset Saunter (WS# W02): Wed-June 24 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. Cost is $50.

• Hike, Sketch, Haiku! (WS# A03): In partnership with the Art Studio. Mon-July 13 from 5:00 – 8:30 pm. Cost is $55.

• Hike, Sketch, Create! A Creative Dialogue & Walk with Wildflowers (WS# A17): In partnership with the Art Studio. Sat-July 18 from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm. Cost is $55.

can’t be here for the festival?

THEN COME TO CRESTED BUTTE WHEN YOU WANT!

Because not everyone can be here for the July Festival, we offer events before and after Festival week, since the wildflowers are going strong all summer. Look-ing for an experience with smaller groups, more interaction with instructors, and the opportunity to hike on protected, and sometimes private, lands? Then let us put together an activities package for you, your family, or larger group when it suits your schedule!

Our outings are designed to delight the hiker, the artist, and the plant-lover in you:

• Full- and half-day hiking excursions that give you a real taste of the backcountry

• Women’s art retreats with the Art Studio of the Center for the Arts

• Tours of the gardens of Historic Crested Butte, walks along our town trails burst-ing with wildflowers, and a lift ride up Crested Butte Mountain Resort that quickly transports you to an alpine environment

We partner with several local businesses to make your trip here spectacular! Our hike leader is Colorado Backcountry, a premier guide service specializing in giv-ing our guests a unique experience by sharing their extensive knowledge about wildflowers and botany, geology, and local history. Hike the epic West Maroon trail to Aspen (check out www.HiketoAspen.com), and some of the Crested Butte classics like Rustler’s Gulch, Scarp Ridge, Dark Canyon, and Teocalli Mountain. Through a partnership with the Crested Butte Land Trust, hike through private lands and an untouched beauty that most people never get to see! You decide when to hike, and the length and pace of your hikes, so you can be comfortable with the days’ plans.

The Art Studio is the visual arts programming branch of the Crested Butte Center for the Arts (www.crestedbuttearts.org). The Art Studio will lead retreats for wom-en entitled “Ripple,” based on the ripple effect of women taking their newfound confidence, artistic skills, creative energy, and enthusiasm back to their everyday lives, changing the world one woman at a time. These three-day retreats in varying mediums are offered each year in July and September. You’ll be immersed in art and surrounded by our majestic mountain scenery in a relaxing, pampered, and supportive environment.

Elevation Hotel and Spa provides discounted rates to Wildflower Festival guests at the beautiful, slope-side Elevation Hotel and Spa, with a restaurant, bar/lounge, indoor pool/sauna, and a full-service health spa. Elevation is located on Mt. Crested Butte, three miles up the hill from historic downtown Crested Butte. A free shuttle bus runs between the two locations every 15 minutes, making it easy to travel back and forth for dining, shopping, and recreation.

THE 29TH ANNUAL WILDFLOWER FESTIVAL POSTER

The cover of our Program Guide this year is the 29th Wildflower Festival poster – a lively watercolor and acrylic painting by Peggy Morgan Stenmark. This painting was expressly created for the Wildflower Festival’s poster contest, and focuses on a circular flow of color and foliage unique to Crested Butte.

Peggy’s artistic career started early on when she would paint on the weekend with her father, who was an art major in college. Finding art in architecture and landscape design energizing, Peggy pursued her degree from CSU in Fort Col-lins, and then happily accepted a job in Vail as a landscape planner/designer in the late 70’s. There, she met her husband, John, and she honed her artistic and graphic design skills and eventually started her own business doing architectural rendering.

In the 80’s, Peggy and John moved to the Front Range with their daughter, Torrey, where they lived for many years but they were always feeling a tug to get back to the mountains. Even living in Evergreen couldn’t truly satisfy their crav-ing for the high country. Peggy had been traveling regularly to attend painting workshops in Creede, Colorado with Stephen Quiller, a long-time local there and established artist whom she considers a mentor.

Despite the years of living in several places in Colorado and the many trips to Creede, Peggy and John had never seen Crested Butte. With a renewed focus on returning to a life in the moun-tains, they set out on a road trip in 2012, visiting lots of small towns like Durango, Ouray, and Tel-luride to see where their hearts would land. Peggy recalls a funny saying told to her: “If Vail and Creede had a child, it would be Crested Butte”, and upon seeing the town on that colorful, fall day, they knew they were “home”. They moved here the summer of 2013.

Peggy’s painting is a composite of several areas. Being new to Crested Butte and its sur-roundings, she isn’t totally certain but she thinks the mountain in her painting is Mount Owen. She looks forward to exploring our local beauty, spending more time painting “en plein air”, and discovering where might be her “favorite” spot to paint. Peggy is represented by Rijks Family Gal-lery, located in downtown Crested Butte at 310 Second Street.

Peggy will be signing her poster at the Wildflower’s Happy Hour on Thursday, July 16 from 5-7 pm at Rijk’s Family Gallery. Join us for art, appetizers and cock-tails, and meet and mingle with Peggy, festival instructors and other festival-goers.
