What Girl Scouts Is All About

Girl-friendly – Girls experience leadership through girl led, hands-on and cooperative activities that promote fun and friendship. Girls doing things together without boys around makes Girl Scouting that much more powerful.

Family Involvement – Girls want their families involved in the great things they are experiencing in Girl Scouts.

Belonging to a Big Sisterhood – Girls love having friends so close they call them ‘sisters’ and they love being part of something big. Girl Scouting is huge and includes millions of girls who all share an important mission – make the world a better place.

Taking Action in Our Communities – Girls know they can make a difference in the world around them.

Skill Building Through Badge Earning – Girls are proud to say, “See what i can do now!” when they learn something new. Girl Scout badges focus on building new skills.

Celebrating with Ceremonies and Traditions – Girl Scouts enjoy taking part in time-honored traditions and ceremonies.

Expanding Your World View – As girls explore new ideas, go to new places, and meet new people, their understanding of the world – and of what’s possible for them — grows.

Earning and Learning Through the Cookie Program – When girls take part in the largest girl-led business in the world (the cookie Program), they earn funds for their Girl Scout activities. they also learn five skills – goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics – that will help them in business and in life.

Growing Through Girl Scouts With Progression – the Girl Scout program is built upon progression from one level to the next. Girls are more likely to stay involved when they know what lies ahead.

Wonder Works and laser tag, oh My!!Juniors, Cadette, Senior, Ambassador

Spend the day at Syracuse Destiny uSA Mall with your Girl Scout friends as you participate in great activities!

WonderWorks was once a top secret research laboratory on a remote island in the Bermuda triangle. As legend has it, the world’s greatest scientists — led by Professor Wonder — were given the task of creating a man-made torna-do and harnessing the PoWEr of it. During this experiment, something went awry and the power of the tornado was unleashed throughout the laboratory. this created a swirling vortex that was strong enough to rip the laboratory from its foundation. it was carried thousands of miles away and landed upside-down in Syracuse, New York. remarkably, all of the experiments remained intact and functional.

Laser Tag, combines innovative technology and fast-paced excitement to provide players with a one-of-a-kind experience. the objective is to outplay, outlast, and outshoot the other players.

GSWNY ropes course

the ropes course is an outdoor adventure program which offers groups and individuals the opportunity to participate in a series of activities involving challenges designed to foster physical and emotional risk taking. the ropes course consists of challenges presented to the group. the challenges are completed on and off the ropes course. the ropes course is built in trees and on poles that are near the ground and off the ground. it is constructed of wood, rope, and steel cable. Safety and cooperation as well as individu-al achievement are essential to the program. this is emphasized by the trained facilitators who will guide the group through the challenges presented on and off the course. the experience includes a variety of activities planned around the elements as well as games played off the course in order to examine and share reactions, insights, and emotions. By participating in a complete program, the group and individual will have the opportunity to increase their communication skills and practice critical thinking and problem solving skills. the goal of each program is to have fun, work as a team, and stretch personally. GSWNY prac-tices challenge by choice, where each individual measures her own success by her standards and goals. We encourage everyone to stretch beyond their comfort zone but discourage pressure to do so from peers and adults accompanying the group. Camp Piperwoodthe ropes course at camp Piperwood consists of four low elements and six high elements in a large open field. Participants may expect to challenge themselves and learn more about their group members during the activities presented. Camp Seven Hills/Goodyearthe ropes course has been in existence for a number of years. New elements have been added periodi-cally to the course to enhance the experience for participants. there are six low elements and eight high elements. the course is built in multiple locations in one section of camp Seven Hills on the Goodyear side of the camp. NEW- Leader/Parent day at the Ropes Coursethis program will walk leaders and other interested adults through a typical program event, including a tour of the facilities, a typical program event agenda, explanation behind challenge by choice, adventure learning, and experiential learning as well as give leaders the opportunity to try some elements.

During this program, participants engage in games that will increase their communica-tion skills and stretch their emotional and physical risk taking in a safe, supportive environment. Emphasis will be placed on group norms, good leadership skills, and being able to engage all members of the group in a positive way. There’s more to our cookies than what’s in the package! When a Girl Scout sells cookies, she’s doing more than just handing over a package of cookies for money. She’s building a lifetime of skills and confidence. She learns goal setting, decision making, money manage-ment, people skills, and business ethics—aspects essential to leadership, to success, and to life. By putting her mind and energies to something, a Girl Scout can overcome any challenge. there are no limits. She can be anything. She can do anything.

Funding the Future Product programs help to support each girl’s activities for the year, such as attending summer camp, trav-eling to destinations near and far, and participating in her troop. Plus, our customers get great products and support girls right here in Western New York. Funds from the cookie Program help the council: • recruit and train volunteers. • Provide financial assistance to make Girl Scouts available for all girls.• improve and maintain camps and other activity sites.• Keep activity/camp fees to a minimum. • Sponsor special events and projects.

these religious awards include the Protestant committee on Scouting and the catholic committee on Scouting. For more information about these two particular committees and their awards, please contact the program department at [email protected].

Getting your volunteer training is as easy as 1-2-3!

For New Troop Leadership Volunteers (Leaders and Assistant Leaders)Step 1:  complete GSuSA’s Girl Scouting 101.  this self-paced online course will give you an orientation to the organization, information on being an effective leader, and information on programming for your girls’ grade level.  Access Girl Scouting 101 by clicking on the eBiz logo on gswny.org, selecting “Activities” in the top toolbar, and then selecting “learning and training.” (Note: accessing this class through eBiz rather than directly through the GSuSA website will ensure it becomes part of your training record.)

Step 2: Attend troop Essentials. this orientation gives you an overview of GSWNY policies and procedures and everything you need to know to get your troop up and running.  this training is conveniently scheduled in your area by local volunteers. When you were approved as a volunteer, you received contact information for your local troop Essentials volunteers. if you need assistance, please contact your GSWNY member-ship manager.

Step 3: Within one month of your first meeting, complete GSWNY Grade level training. this online training provides grade-level specific information on troop management, program options, planning troop meet-ings, and developing girl leadership. there is a grade level training for each Girl Scout level. (Senior and Am-bassador levels are combined into older Girl training.) the online training is a self-paced course. Access Grade level training by clicking on the eBiz logo on gswny.org, selecting “Activities” in the top toolbar, and then selecting “learning and training.”

While there is no specific training for troop committee members (such as troop drivers or chaperones), all volunteers are encouraged to view Girl Scouting 101 and the appropriate Grade level training. the more training your parent volunteers have, the better they can effectively assist you and the girls!

For Series VolunteersStep 1:  complete GSuSA’s Volunteering for Girl Scouts Series & Events.  this self-paced online course will give you an orientation to the organization, information on being an effective leader, and information on programming for your girls’ grade level.  Access Volunteering for Girl Scouts Series & Events by clicking on the eBiz logo on gswny.org, selecting “Activities” in the top toolbar, and then selecting “learning and train-ing.” (Note: accessing this class through eBiz rather than directly through the GSuSA website will ensure it becomes part of your training record.)

Step 3:  Based on input from your GSWNY program manager, complete the appropriate GSWNY Grade level training(s). Although this training provides information on troop management and other troop-spe-cific elements, it also provides valuable information on program options, developing girl leadership, and grade-level characteristics, which will be helpful when planning a series. the online training is a self-paced course.
