ChILD CAREFor children between the age of 5 and 15 years

Y AfTERSChOOL Children who regularly attend high-quality afterschool programs have better grades and conduct in school;more academic and enrichment opportunities; better peer relations and emotional adjustment and lower incidencesof drug use, violence and pregnancy. The After-school program operates from September 8, 2014 through June 19, 2015 and applications are accepted on an on-going basis. After-school resumes for Mid-winter Session on Tuesday, January 5, 2015. There is a mandatory parent meeting on Tuesday, September 17 or Wednesday, September 23, 2014 at 6:30pm.

BEACON AfTERSChOOL (grades K - 8) monday - Friday 2:45 - 6:00 pm

The After School Program provides homework assistance, an educational component, recreational sports, and arts & crafts, in a fun learning environment. The After School program provides programs using the 6 core areas required by DYCD: Educational Enhancement, Career Awareness, Civic Engagement, Recreation /Health, Culture/Art and Life Skills.

CAMP For children between the age of 5 and 15 years

hOLIDAY CAMPWhen school’s out, the Y is there to keep kids safe and engaged in fun, healthy activities to let working moms and dads rest easy. Y Holiday Camp is geared to engage kids in healthy physical activity and fostering positive social interactions.

Each program offers the highest quality instruction and supervision, provided by trained and qualified staff members.

the cross island ymca beacon center provides after school, day and weekend programming for youths ages 5 to 17 years. REqUIREMENTS fOR CAMP REgISTRATION Have a completed medical form; signed and stamped by a physician. Copies will not be made at the Beacon Center: Medical Forms must be picked up prior to registration.

Proof of age is required. Copy of birth certificate, passport or valid picture ID. Children must be Six (6) years old and up. Five (5) years old must be age Six (6) before the program begins.

ELEMENTARY PROgRAMS For children between the age of 5 and 10 years

KIDS zONEThis transitional program is only for children registered in both Start Smart Sports and Martial Arts. Children will participate in structured activities such as Arts and Crafts, Story time and simple science projects under the guidance of a Y staff member, while waiting for their next program to begin.

CREATIvE ARTSFor young people between the ages of 11 and17.

MODERN DANCENatural movement is one of the basis for modern dance. Key elements of this type of dance include release, fall, andsuspension of movement. Dancers have freedom for individual expression. Performances will be held at the end of the Fall & Spring sessions. thursday 4:30 - 5:45 pm

fAShION DESIgN Fashion design is the applied art dedicated to clothing and lifestyle accessories.Participants will learn how to sew and design their own clothing. Participants will be instructed in drawing and following simple design patterns. They will learn how to use a sewing machine and stitch by hand. Friday 6:30 - 7:30 pm

YOUTh DEvELOPMENT For young people between the ages of 11 and17.

TEEN CENTERExclusively for teens, this program offers its participants a variety of activities, including game room and recreational sports. Teen Center will feature weekly current events facing our youth, along with great guest speakers.

YOUTh COUNCILYouth Council encourages participants to be active in the Beacon Center and its development. Youth Council participants will learn leadership qualities and responsibility through participation in meetings to discuss, plan and implement program & special community events at the Beacon Center. TEENS TAKE ThE CITY Teens Take the City will provide teens with invigorating learning experiences unlike anything available in the traditional classroom environment. Teens Take the City will give teens the chance to see the city, discover who runs their neighborhoods and become active in their community. Participants learn about the New York City Political system. An advisor teaches participants how all the entities of New York City government operates. tuesday 4:30 - 5:45 pm

LEADERS CLUB A nationally recognized core YMCA teen program provides participants with opportunities for leadership training, personal growth, service to others and social development. Teens meet on a weekly basis in small groups, working closely with their peers and an adult advisor on skill and character building activities, as well as planning and organizing projects with an emphasis on educational success, community service and goal-setting. leaders (ages 15-17) Friday 6:00 - 7:00 pm

YOUTh AND gOvERNMENTYouth and Government is a national YMCA program that allows teens to increase their knowledge of our democratic system. In this program, teens will learn about legislature (how a bill becomes a law), justice (how laws are legally supposed to protect us), lobbying (the role we play in which bills become laws), and the role of the media (newspapers,television, magazines, etc.) in our government. Try your hand at writing your own bill, taking it to our State Capital, and passing it into a law at the New York State Youth and Government Conference in March 2015.

If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes.

ABOUT ThE PROgRAM In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will help facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity and other behavior changes over the course of 16 one-hour sessions. After the initial 16 core sessions, participants meet monthly for added support to help them maintain their progress.

PROgRAM gOALS: • Reduce body weight by 7%• Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week

WhO CAN PARTICIPATE? In order to qualify for the program, you must be at least 18 years old, overweight (BMI > 25)* and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with prediabetes† by a healthcare provider. *Asian individual(s) BMI > 22

†Individuals who have already been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes do not qualify for this program.

YMCA Of gREATER NEW YORK’S NEW AMERICANS INITIATIvE/ ELESAIR PROJECT The YMCA of Greater New York’s New Americans Initia-tive/ELESAIR Project is an Adult Literacy program offering English Language and Employment Services for Adult Im-migrants and Refugees. ELESAIR has been serving New York City’s diverse low-income immigrant population for almost thirty years.

All classes are FREE to participants. ALL ARE WELCOME! Please bring a copy of a bill with your home address and any form of I.D.to the Cross Island YMCA Beacon Center.

ESL For ages 16 and up. ELESAIR offers students weekday ESL classes, Monday through Thursday. The classes range from beginning, intermediate and high levels. English levels and schedules are assigned after pre-test. ELESAIR’s main goal is to help students improve their English language skills and knowledge of American culture. ELESAIR will also help students prepare for jobs, and assist in placing them in job training programs. In addition, eligible immigrants who want to become American citizens can prepare for their citizen-ship tests in ELESAIR classes.

MEMBERShIP CARDS PROGRAM CARDS Program members will be issued a card granting them YMCA access for their program. This card must be presented and scanned for access into the Beacon Center. Please wear your ID card at all times.

LOST CARDS Please let us know if your card is lost or stolen. There is a fee to issue a replacement card.

PROgRAM POLICY AND PROCEDURE• The YMCA reserves the right to cancel any program that fails to meet enrollment requirements. • There are no make-up classes for the first absence in a program. Thereafter it will be upon the discretion of the Program Directors. • After three (3) absences a participant may be dropped from a class.

CAMERA & CELL PhONE POLICYFor the privacy and security of all—especially our kids and teens—we do not allow any photo or video recording without permission from the Communications Director. Cell phones, camera phones and PDAs are not permitted in program areas and must be silenced upon entering the building.
