Home.

It’s a subjective term for many. For some, it means warmth, comfort and safety. For others, the word brings feelings of turmoil, angst and insecurity. For many of Calgary’s most vulnerable children and youth, Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary provides a second home, a place where our kids know that they are safe, cared for and valued...a place where they know they belong.

The truth is, Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary wouldn’t be able to provide this second home without the passion, dedication and commitment of our staff, volunteers, donors and community partners, all of whom give tirelessly of themselves, their talents and their treasures to ensure that every single one of our kids have that second home, that safe place to land in the world.

Because of you, our kids don’t have to go hungry, sleep outside in the cold, or live in harm’s way. Because of you, our kids have the opportunity for experiences that affirm their value and place in the world. Because of you, our kids know that they truly do belong.

For each success, accomplishment and achievement over the past year, we also saw new challenges. Our city continues to change in unimaginable ways...with the impact of the recession, we saw Calgary’s most vulnerable children, youth and families struggle with prolonged job loss, food scarcity and housing insecurity. For many, home was and continues to be in jeopardy.

That’s why we need your investment in our kids – now, more than ever.

With your committed investment, we can continue to provide thousands of children and youth with a second home and a safe place where they feel secure, cared for and valued – a place where their individual needs are met, and where they have the opportunity to dream big, work hard, achieve their goals, become self-sufficient adults and reach their fullest potential in life.

We are grateful for your commitment and dedication to every single one of our kids. You are part of the inspiring and empowering force that is changing the lives of Calgary’s most vulnerable children and youth. Thank you for continuing to prove that every single kid deserves a safe place to land in the world. Thank you for continuing to prove that every single kid counts.

Sincerely,

Every single kid needs someone who believes in them and opens doors to new possibilities. For nearly a decade, Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes) has been proving that every single kid counts. Since 2009,

Blakes has been providing Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary with pro bono legal assistance on employment, real estate and general corporate matters. Their dedicated commitment to Calgary’s vulnerable children and youth has continued to grow over the years, resulting in hundreds of hours of pro bono support from the Blakes team, who generously give of their time and talents to ensure Calgary’s kids have the opportunities they need to grow, thrive and pursue great futures.

“Our involvement with Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary provides an opportunity to assist one of the leading child and youth organizations in the community at a time when the Calgary community service sector is needed more than ever. The number of Calgarians needing access to the programs offered by Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary is always increasing, and Blakes is proud to help in any way we can,” says Mark Morrison, a partner in the Blakes litigation group in Calgary, and chair of the Pro Bono Committee for the Calgary office.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary serves a very important role in the community by helping support some of Calgary’s most at-risk youth. Without the various programs offered by Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary, many of these youth would lack the necessary support to grow and thrive,” Mark says. “Each program the organization offers is important in serving a different need, from community building through sports and Clubs, to providing basic needs, such as youth housing. We are engaged by the overall vision of Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary to support at-risk children in our community.”

As an organization, Blakes is nationally committed to pro bono work for local charities, supporting youth organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Canada. “We feel that it is important to give back in the communities that we practice in…Calgary has given a lot to Blakes, and our lawyers and staff feel privileged to have the opportunity to give back to an organization that does a great deal of good for our city and community,” Mark says.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors like Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, Calgary’s kids have hope for a brighter future.

Legacy Award Recipient Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary is pleased to present Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP with this year’s

Legacy Award, in honour of Blakes’ commitment and dedication to supporting Calgary’s children and youth.

“We’re not just friends or a community, we’re pretty much a family. We all get together, we all have good laughs, and we share

emotions. It’s really a branch off of life, I guess you can say.”

“They say home is where the heart is. Before I came to Avenue 15, my heart was nowhere – I didn’t have a home. Avenue 15

literally became my home. I loved it there.”

Every single kid needs opportunities to create their own life story.

Before getting involved in Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary’s Indigenous Initiatives programs, Andrew had little opportunity to feel connected to his culture, heritage and community.

Since joining these programs in 2014, Andrew has been thriving, participating in everything from round dances and sweat lodges to youth leadership trips to Mexico to build houses with Homes of Hope. The connection that Andrew has developed with his Indigenous culture has become extremely important in his life: “It really helps us connect back to our culture, and it’s something that not everyone has access to.”

With all the incredible opportunities Andrew has experienced through the Indigenous Initiatives programs, what keeps Andrew coming back time and again is the people: “We’re not just friends or a community, we’re pretty much a family. We all get together, we all have good laughs, and we share emotions. It’s really a branch off of life, I guess you can say.” He says, “You just get to meet really awesome people. And I think that’s something that not everyone can have.”

Andrew says the Indigenous Initiatives staff have changed his life in remarkable ways. Growing up without a father figure in his life, the staff at Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary have been positive role models who have been vital to his success, especially Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary’s Manager of Indigenous Initiatives, Tim Fox. “The staff are totally understanding and helpful in every way. They are people I can really trust and tell things to that maybe I wouldn’t feel comfortable telling other people,” Andrew says.

In the future, Andrew is passionate about continuing to take on more leadership roles within his community, something the Indigenous Initiatives staff have encouraged him in and supported him to pursue.

Thanks to your investment and belief in our youth, Andrew found a community where he feels he truly belongs.

At 17 years old, Tyler hit rock bottom. He dropped out of high school, was struggling with drug addiction, in debt, unable to find a job, and was no longer welcome sleeping on his friends’ couches. He slept on the street for two nights before waking up one morning and realizing, ‘This is not the way I want to live my life. I am not the person I ever thought I’d be.’ That day, Tyler found Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary’s Avenue 15 Youth Homeless Shelter.

And so began Tyler’s year-long journey of rebuilding his life at Avenue 15. “Avenue 15 can help you to work towards wherever you want to be. It really helped me out because it was exactly what I needed in life. They gave me all the support and all the help I needed,” Tyler says. Through the help of the staff at Avenue 15, Tyler got sober, found a job he enjoys, paid off his debt, and is now living in his own apartment.

“It’s almost sad to say, but I’m kind of glad I hit rock bottom at such a young age, because I know what my rock bottom is, and it’s literally only up from there,” he says. “Every time I have a bad day and I’m feeling a bit down or depressed, I look out the window of my apartment and remind myself that this is my apartment – I pay the rent for it, I am the one who got myself here, I am the one who signed the lease – that’s what keeps me on track.”

Tyler says it was the staff at Avenue 15 who made the biggest difference in his life: “The staff became my family. They were always there to help me. They were there to talk and help me figure out stuff about my life, and that’s what really matters.”

“Avenue 15 was my home. 100%. They say home is where the heart is. Before I came to Avenue 15, my heart was nowhere – I didn’t have a home. Even when I walk past there on my way to work now, if I have ten minutes, I’ll knock on the door and say 'hi' to the staff. If I walk a few feet in the door, I’ll think, ‘Yep, it still smells like home.’ Avenue 15 literally became my home. I loved it there.”

Thanks to your generosity and commitment to our youth, Tyler found his home.
