(Winnipeg, Maniotba) has shown good skills on vault and beam. Minnesotan Emily Ramberg will push for time on three events -- vault, beam and floor -- and Nevada native Morgan Ross will try to crack the lineup on vault and floor. Along with home meets against Winona State and Centenary, the Seawolves will open their new home at the Alaska Airlines Center by hosting the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships for the first time, Mar. 21.

an All-MPSF performer on vault with a team-best 9.645 regional qualifying score. Kallie Randolph, the team’s only local product (Polaris K-12/Anchorage Gym. Assoc.), was a standout on floor exercise as a rookie, earning All-MPSF honors and ranking No. 5 all-time at UAA with a 9.682 average. The freshmen bring a wide variety of skills and are ready to contribute primar-ily as specialists. Stoklos says Oregon native Kendra Daniels is already one of the team’s top balance beam perform-ers, while Canadian Madeleine Arbuckle

With a sparkling new training and competition facility and the

Seawolves’ most veteran squad in several seasons, Alaska Anchorage gymnastics fans have good reason for optimism entering the 2015 campaign and beyond. The Seawolves return 10 letterwin-ners and one redshirt from last year’s team -- including three former NCAA Regional qualifiers -- along with four tal-ented freshmen to compose the roster. “We have been dependent on a heavy contribution from freshmen the last two years but now we have a proven bunch of returners who can put up quality scores and take the pressure off the young ones,” said UAA head coach Paul Stoklos, who has piloted the program through its 31-year existence. The team’s only senior and 4th-year competitor is co-captain Morgan Cook, who has 16 career all-arounds to her credit. The 2012 NCAA Regional quali-fier put up a 38.025 average last year to lead the team. Meanwhile, five accomplished juniors will take the floor, including for-mer NCAA qualifiers M’rcy Matsunami (2013) and Stefany Bryan (2014). Matsunami delivered a record-setting freshman campaign before struggling with injuries last season, but the Nebraskan is healthy again and poised to top her career-high of 38.750. Bryan, a Seattle native, was All-MPSF on bars and all-around last year and carries a career-high of 38.475. The Seawolves’ European duo of juniors Marie-Sophie Boggasch (Germany) and Simone Penker (Austria) is also back and stronger than ever, with Penker having competed for her national team at the 2014 World Championships in China in October. Boggasch brings career-highs of 9.875 on vault and 9.725 on bars. They will be joined by the newly wed Sariaye (Jensen) Fishburn, who is coming off a redhirt season and looks to push for time on floor and vault. After being baptized by fire as rook-ies, this year’s sophomore class is ready to make another giant leap, led by team co-captiain Nicole Larkin. A capable all-arounder, the Kennewick, Wash., product is especially skilled on bars, averaging 9.537 in 2014. UAA should also get valuable con-tributions from fellow West Coast natives Kelsy Konkright (Yakima, Wash.), Brice Mizell (Mill City, Ore.), and Julia York (Mission Viejo, Calif.), who both excelled on vault and floor last year. PAUL STOKLOSHead Coach 31st Season

The only gymnastics coach the University of Alaska Anchorage has

ever known, Paul Stoklos keeps taking the Seawolves to new heights as he embarks on his 31st season in 2015. Stoklos has overseen UAA’s transition from Division II to Division I over the past decade, boosting the team’s talent to its highest level ever. The 20 best team

scores in program history have all come since 2004, including eight of the top nine marks since 2008. In 2009, Stoklos’ squad won its first-ever conference title when it captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Colorado Springs. Individually, Stoklos has qualified 14 Seawolf gymnasts to the NCAA West Regional all-around competition – including current squad mem-bers M’rcy Matsunami and Stefany Bryan – and produced nine MPSF event titlists. Stoklos’ gymnasts have also produced in the class-room, topping the MPSF All-Academic Team in 2010 with 10 honorees and finishing eighth in the nation with a 3.58 overall team GPA in 2013. From the program’s inception in 1985 until becoming a full-fledged Division I program in 2004, Stoklos’ program produced three national champions, 12 All-Americans and 37 Academic All-Americans at the Division II level. Success in recent seasons has come from a continued refinement of the UAA program. At the end of each season, Stoklos and his squad make adjustments to the training process which allows them to improve both in the gym and in the classroom. Team performance is important to Stoklos, who wants his gymnasts to think of their routines in terms of an overall team effort. Topping his list of student-athlete priorities, however, is academics, evidenced by the fact that his team consistently produces All-American Scholar certificates. Prior to coming to UAA, Stoklos served as a coach as an undergradu-ate and graduate assistant at the University of Arizona for seven years. He helped bring a fledgling gymnastics program from ground level to a national ranking in just four years. Stoklos was an excellent athlete in his own right, earning varsity letters in football, track and gymnastics in high school. He was a competitive skydiver at Arizona where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981. An avid and experienced downhill and cross-country skier, Stoklos is a member of the Mt. Alyeska Ski Patrol during the winter months. He enjoys hiking, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and is a rated private air-plane pilot. Stoklos is also a longtime member of the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs.

T he Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions

from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected colleges and universities in the western United States, providing championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. In women’s gymnastics, the league expanded back to six institu-tions in 2014 as former members Sacramento State and San Jose State rejoined Air Force, Alaska Anchorage, UC Davis and Seattle Pacific. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affili-ation, to contain the costs of competition, and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. It has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In 2014-15, the Federation is celebrating its 23rd year of competi-tion, and today the MPSF is more relevant than at any other time since its inception. This year the MPSF will again provide competition in 10 Olympic sports while serving 93 teams from 38 universities in nine western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, women’s lacrosse, and men’s volleyball. MPSF team champi-ons are eligible to compete in the NCAA Championships with men’s and women’s water polo, men’s volleyball, and women’s lacrosse champions earning automatic qualification. In 2013-14, MPSF teams won four NCAA team championship titles, extending the streak to 10 straight years achieving such a feat. USC men’s water polo, Stanford women’s water polo, and Oregon men’s and women’s indoor track & field brought the MPSF’s total to 76 NCAA titles since the first season of competition in 1992-93.

In the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in collegiate sports.

Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mythical sea creature. Ac cording to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms through-out the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

CHANCELLORTOM CASE

Tom Case, Lt. Gen. USAF (Ret.), became chancel-lor of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May

2011. Upon completing his Air Force career, he was appointed dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), where he served nearly six years before becoming president and chief operating

officer of the state-owned, independently operated Alaska Aerospace Corporation. Since returning to UAA as Chancellor, Case has focused on helping students succeed in their college goals. In 2011, UAA became one of only 11 universities nationwide to open a VetSuccess program on campus. UAA opened a Veteran’s Resource Center in 2013 to support its growing military and veteran student population. With support from Chancellor funds, UAA established the INNOVATE awards in 2011 to provide an incentive for innovative research. Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research. In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty. A second startup incorporated in June 2013. Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending.Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015. Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, son-in-law Daniel, and three grandchildren. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the National War College, the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, the Air War College, and Emory University’s Advanced Management Program. He is an active member of the community, having served on the boards of the Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Alaska, and is immediate past president of Commonwealth North. He is an avid pilot and, of course, a great Seawolf fan.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSKEITH HACKETT

Entering his second year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Keith Hackett

has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA pro-gram for unprecedented growth and success as a new era begins in 2014-15. Since arriving on Oct. 1, 2013, Hackett has overseen

the planning and logistics for the department’s transition into the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – a state-of-the-art sports, community and concert venue that will transform the UAA campus – along with expanded hockey facilities at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Under his leadership, the department has developed an official strate-gic plan that will guide the decision-making process and allow the depart-ment to maintain a focus on the mission of Seawolf Athletics. A university and administrative management executive with 37 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community, and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement, developing partnerships with Global Spectrum to manage the Alaska Airlines Center, Front Row Marketing to oversee corporate partnerships, and Paciolan for ticketing. Along with his behind-the-scenes contributions, UAA’s success in the competitive arena was also apparent in Hackett’s first year. In 2013-14, the Seawolves not only finished 16th of 315 institutions nationally in the NCAA Div. II Learfield Director’s Cup, but also produced 25 All-Americans, nine NCAA Championships team qualifications and four Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles, while UAA student-athletes combined for a 3.18 overall grade-point average. Hackett came to UAA after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities with specific teams, Hackett was involved with donor relations and major gifts, budget, human and physical resource management, and alumni and community relations at Nevada. As a key member of the Wolf Pack’s senior leader-ship team, he was responsible for oversight of all athletics department capital projects, development of the department’s first athletic facilities master plan, and event management for all home contests. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive Vice President for Special Projects and was Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive Vice President and Provost at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Okla., from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 38 years and have two adult children, Katie and James.

Alaska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas.

Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska also boasts 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage, and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Also known as Mt. McKinley, the collosal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days.
