Another pair of juniors – JackieThomas and Erin Aitcheson – gives UAAitsbest-everdepthonunevenbars.Thomasmade 11 appearances on bars last year,delivering a season-best 9.2 at the MPSFChampionships. Aitcheson, meanwhile,competed six times on bars, earning acareer-best of 9.0 in UAA’s narrow winoverAirForceinMarch. AmongUAA’sfournewcomers,juniorKathleen Mantell brings the most experi-ence to the lineup.TheCalifornian trained

Two years removed from his team’s first-everleaguechampionship,longtimeAlaskaAnchorage gymnastics coach Paul Stoklosfeels his team has the talent, depth andexperiencetoreturntothetopofthepodiumin2011. Stoklos returns seven letterwinnersfromlastyearandaddsfournewcomersasUAAbeginsthechaseforanotherMountainPacificSportsFederationcrown. “This is perhaps the hardest work-ing, most self-motivated bunch of gym-nastswe have ever had,” said Stoklos, theonly head coach in the 27-year history ofthe Seawolves program. “They seem verydirected as a group. They understand theimportance of the team concept and aregoal-oriented,with themain goal being towinconference.” UAA’sexperiencestartsatthetopwithapairofdrivenseniors–KristyBoswellandMariaPuricelli. Boswell,fromCherryHill,N.J.,beginsher fourth and final campaign after a longrehab from a knee injury she suffered lastFebruary. The bars specialist has a career-high of 9.8 on that event and also addsprovenexperienceonbeamandfloor. “Kristyhasshownamazingdedicationandhardworktogetbackfromherinjury,”saidStoklos. Meanwhile,Puricelli shouldbeoneoftheanchorsofthelineuponbars,wheresheearnedAll-MPSFhonorswitha9.610RQSin 2010. The St. Louis nativewill also bea key performer on vault after scoring 9.5or better in the final five meets last year.Puricelli trains for the all-around as well,providingdepthonbothfloorandbeam. Fullerton, this year’s team captain,shouldbeoneofthesquad’stopthreeper-formersonbothvaultandfloor,alongwitha solid beam set. The junior from FlowerMound,Texas,wasanAll-MPSFperformeronfloorwitha9.720RQSlastseason,tal-lying9.6orbetteroneightofherfinalnineroutines. “Kelseyhasbroughtstabilityandorga-nization to her teammates,” said Stoklos.“Aside from the example she sets in train-ing,shehasahugefloorroutinewithgreatdifficulty,andsheisalsoastrongvaulter.” Another junior, Kaelei Spoor, is backin the fold after earning team MVP hon-ors last year. The Rome, N.Y., productwas an all-conference performer on floorand posted team season-highs of 9.875 onfloorand9.825onbeam–bothtop-10all-time scores at UAA – at the 2010 MPSFChampionships. With a 9.510 returningaverage on vault, Spoor should be one ofthemostsolidthree-eventperformersinthe

titlists, including currentseniorKristyBoswell. Stoklos’gymnastshavealsoproducedintheclass-room, topping the MPSFAll-Academic Team in2010with10honorees. From the program’sinception in 1985 untilbecoming a full-fledgedDivision I program in2004, Stoklos’ pro-gram produced threenational champions, 12All-Americans and 37Academic All-AmericansattheDivisionIIlevel. Success in recent sea-sons has come from a continued refinement of theUAA program.Attheendofeachseason,Stoklosandhissquadmakeadjustmentstothetrainingprocesswhichallowsthemtoimprovebothinthegymandintheclassroom. TeamperformanceisimportanttoStoklos,whowantshisgymnaststothinkoftheirroutinesintermsofanoverallteameffort.Toppinghislistofstudent-athletepriorities,however,isacademics,evidencedbythefactthathisteamconsistentlyproducesAll-AmericanScholarcertificates. PriortocomingtoUAA,Stoklosservedasacoachasanundergradu-ateandgraduateassistantat theUniversityofArizonaforsevenyears.Hehelpedbringafledglinggymnasticsprogramfromgroundleveltoanationalrankinginjustfouryears.Stokloswasanexcellentathleteinhisownright,earningvarsitylettersinfootball,trackandgymnasticsinhighschool.HewasacompetitiveskydiveratArizonawhereheearnedhisbachelor’sdegreein1981. Anavidandexperienceddownhillandcross-countryskier,Stoklosisamemberof theMt.AlyeskaSkiPatrolduring thewintermonths.Heenjoyshiking,fishing,scubadiving,skydivingandisaratedprivateair-planepilot.StoklosisalsoalongtimememberoftheAlaskaSearchandRescueDogs.

The only gymnastics coach theUniversity of Alaska Anchorage has

everknown,PaulStokloskeepstakingtheSeawolves tonewheightsasheembarksonhis27thseasonin2011.Overthepastsevenseasons,StokloshasoverseenUAA’stransitionfromDivisionII to Division I, and boosted the team’stalenttoitshighestlevelever.The20best

teamscoresinprogramhistoryhaveallcomesince2004,includingsixofthetop10marksinthe2009seasonalone. In 2009, Stoklos’ squad won its first-ever conference title when itcaptured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships inColoradoSprings. Individually,Stokloshasqualified10SeawolfgymnaststotheNCAAWestRegionalall-aroundcompetition,andproducedeightMPSFevent

Monettehasanextensivebackgroundingymnasticsasacompetitor,headcoach,compulsoryjudgeandclubowner.ShehasservedtwostintsasheadcoachfortheAnchorageGymnasticsAssociation,from1993-95andfrom1978-85. SEAWOLF FACILITIES

UAA hosts itshome meetson campus in the1,000-seat WellsFargo SportsComplex. Thenewlyrefurbishedgym, which hashoused Seawolfgymnastics, bas-ketballandvolleyballsince1978,providesacomfortableatmosphereforbothcompeti-torsandfans. Seawolf gymnasts also make use oftheWFSC’sotherfacilities—weightroom,fitnesscenter,25-meterpool,joggingtrackandsauna—fortrainingandrecreation. TheSeawolvestrainoff-campusattheAnchorageGymnasticsAssociationfacilityin Midtown. UAA gymnastis have exclu-siveuseoftheAGAgymforpractice.Thefacility offers 12 competition beams, foursetsofunevenbars and two spring floors,as well as a loose foam pit for vaulting,tumblingandbars.Thegymincludesalmost23,000squarefeetoftrainingspace.

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was establishedin 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions

fromtheBigWest,Pacific-10,MountainWest,WesternAthleticandWest Coast Conferences and other selected colleges and universitiesinthewesternUnitedStates,providingchampionshipcompetitionforDivisionIintercollegiateOlympicsportsinaconferencesetting. Inwomen’sgymnastics, the league is comprisedof four institu-tions--theUniversityofAlaskaAnchorage,UCDavis,SeattlePacificandtheU.S.AirForceAcademy. TheMPSFwasoriginallyformedtoprovideenhancedcompetitionandchampionshipopportunities for sportswithoutconferenceaffilia-

tion,tocontainthecostsofcompetition,andtoensurethesurvivalofsportsimpactedbyTitleIXandotherfiscalpressures.Ithasalsoservedas an incubator for emerging women’s sports and a safe harbor forsportsimpactedbyconferencerealignments. In2006-2007,theFederationcelebratedits15thyearofcompeti-tion,andtodaytheMPSFismorerelevantthanatanyothertimesinceitsinception.Asatestamenttoitsviability,thefederationcontinuestosuccessfullyridetheever-changingwaveofcollegesportsbyfosteringcontraction and expansion tomeet the dynamic needs of itsmemberinstitutionsandconferences.Sinceitsinception,MPSFteamshavewonmore than 50 NCAA team championships and numerous individualtitlesaswell. In 2010-11, the MPSF will again provide competition in nineOlympicsportswhileservingover1,500student-athletesandapproxi-mately75headcoachesfrom32universitiesin12westernstates. AllMPSFteamscompeteattheNCAADivisionIlevelinmen’ssoccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoortrack and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosseandmen’svolleyball.AllMPSFchampionsareeligibletocompeteinNCAAChampionshipswithMPSFmen’ssoccer,men’sandwomen’swaterpolo,andmen’svolleyballchampionsearningautomaticqualifi-cationintoNCAAchampionshipevents.

IntheSeawolf,theUniversityofAlaskaAnchoragehasoneofthemoreuniquemascotsincollegiatesports. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolfmoniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents amythical sea creature.AccordingtothelegendoftheSeawolf,anyonefortunateenoughtoviewitwassubjecttogoodluck. The exact nature or shape of theSeawolf, however,was left to theimaginationandthusthecreaturehasbeendepictedinmanyformsthrough-outtheyears. TheSeawolfoftodaywasintroducedin1985.CreatedbytheClarkMishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with aUniversity committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditionalAlaskatotemic-likecharacterizationofthemythicalSeawolf.

In10 seasons at the helmof theUniversity ofAlaskaAnchorage athleticdepartment, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprec-edentedheights.NotonlyhavetheSeawolvesexcelledinthefieldofcom-petition,butthefoundationforfuturesuccesshasbeensetinseveralways. The 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns were three of the mostmemorableinschoolhistory,highlightedbythreeFinalFourappearancesfor

Seawolfbasketballteams(womentwice,menonce),andNCAAtop-15finishesformen’sandwomen’scrosscountry,skiing(threetimes),andmen’strack&field(twice). WithUAA’s concurrentNCAAbasketball runs in 2008,UAAbecame just the secondschool inDivision II history to qualifyboth itsmen’s andwomen’s squads for thenationalsemifinals. UnderDr.Cobb’sleadership,aplanningphaseisalsounderwayfortheconstructionofanewon-campus sports facility atUAA.Hehas also recentlyoverseen severalupgrades toUAA’scurrentfacilities, includingtheinstallationofanewgymfloorandbleachersandtheconstructionoftheAll-American/AcademicAll-Americanhonorswall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanentendowmentfundthatwillensurefullfundingforfutureathleticscholarshipsatUAA.SeawolfLegacysurpassedthe$1millionmarkindonationsinearly2008. Earlyinhistenure,hewasthedrivingforcebehindtheestablishmentoftheSeawolfHallof Fame andwas instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for theWells FargoSports Complex,KendallHockeyClassic and Extended StayDeluxe Invitational volleyballtournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall ofChampionsabovetheSeawolves’practicerink,aswellasmen’sandwomen’sCarrs/SafewayGreatAlaskaShootoutchampionsdisplaysinthegymnasium. Aformerfootballcoach,Dr.CobbservedastheathleticdirectoratGeorgiaSouthwesternStateUniversitybeforecomingtoUAA.InfiveyearsatGeorgiaSouthwestern,Dr.CobbraisedtheHurricanes’overallprogramtobecomeoneofthemostsuccessfulinthenation,makingtheNAIAnationalplayoffsinsixofitssevensportsandwinningmultipleconferencechampion-shipsinmen’sandwomen’sbasketball,softballandvolleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobbwas an assistant athletic director at IowaWesleyan College,whereheservedasthefootballteam’sdefensivecoordinatorandspecialteamscoach.HealsohadstintsasanassistantfootballcoachatEastTexasStateUniversity(1990-92)andSulRossStateUniversity(1988-90). A 1981 graduate of theUniversity ofMontevallo,Dr. Cobb also holds aDoctorate ofEducationdegreefromEastTexasStateaswellasaMasterofBusinessAdministrationdegreefromSt.AmbroseUniversityandaMasterofEducationdegreefromSulRossState. Dr.CobbandhiswifeSandraresideinEastAnchorage.
