Jeff Marano

Members,

Sometimes, in order to understand our lives with different perspective, we need to remember that there are more important things in our life than our day to day routine. The situation that Dillon Brooks, his friends and family faced this last year made us realize how precious and fragile life itself is. At the end of everyday it is not our to-do list that matters, or our material possessions, what truly matters is the loved ones that are a part of our lives.

Dillon passed away on Saturday July 12, 2014. “Team Dillon” and the members as-sociated with the cause created an incredible support system, surpassing goals and objectives far greater than any other initiative we can remember. The PBA would like to thank all the participants of the fundraising efforts and especially commend The Miami Dolphin organization, Pembroke Pines Police Officers, and The Pines Mayor and Commissioners.

As busy as we have been here at the PBA, nothing is as remotely as important as this message.

Words from our VP...It is with great pride that I have the privilege of announcing that our own PBA President, Jeff Marano, has been voted onto the Florida PBA Executive Board as Sergeant of Arms. For more than two decades Jeff has been a leader in the fight for law enforcement of-ficer’s rights and benefits in Tallahassee. That, along with his expertise in local pension laws makes him a perfect fit for his new role. This gives the Broward PBA an-other voice in the direction that the Florida PBA will prioritize its fight for our benefits and legislation that helps law enforce-ment throughout the state. Although it will mean many more grueling trips to Tallahassee, I’m sure Jeff will be up to the task. He will take the position later this year so congratulate him when you see him. On a more somber note, it is with a heavy heart that we were informed this week of the passing of Dillon Brooks, the son of PBA Treasurer Drew Brooks. Please express your thoughts to Drew to let him know that you are thinking of him. It has brought a dark cloud over the PBA office that will take a long time to clear. I was out of town with my son, who is only a few years older than Dillon, at the time that I heard the news and it really gave me a chance to put some things into perspective with him. Dillon will always be in our hearts and thoughts.

Also, please keep Senior Vice President Debbie Reggio in your thoughts. While breaking up a fight between two dogs she was severely bitten in the arm and leg. After several days in the hospital she was recently released, but the injuries are severe enough that they will take several weeks to recover from. There is no bigger dog lover than Debbie so this incident is very unfortunate.

Letter to the Editor: What Bargaining Union would you rather have? An officer from North Miami P.D. shows his support for Dade PBA…

I was a union board member with the Inter-national Union of Police Association (IUPA) for approximately three years. During my time as a board member, I was part of the Violent Crimes Unit and we were involved in two shootings. The IUPA sent an attorney out to both scenes, to my complete disbe-

lief because I was told by several officers that the IUPA would always send retired police officers to the scenes of police involved shootings. In fact, the IUPA would use retired officers for many functions with the only exceptions being bargain-ing and personnel hearings. I believe that we were fortunate enough to have an attorney respond to our shootings because our sergeant at the time was the Union President.

I was skeptical when the Police Benevolent Association (PBA) was attempting to take over as our Bargaining Union. Many officers’ chief complaint was primarily about the legal repre-sentation provided by the IUPA when it mattered most. After the PBA came in as our bargaining union, the department had officers involved in shootings. The PBA’s shooting team responded and showed the strength that the officers were mentioning when we were voting for Bargaining unions. I did see the difference and understood why officers would want the PBA in their corner when their jobs were in jeopardy.

It is my opinion that I would take the PBA over the IUPA. The IUPA is part of the AFLCIO and will promise to send plumbers, painters and carpenters to stand outside your city hall and help you hold signs in order to show overwhelming force. I prefer to have a union which represents police officers and po-lice support personnel only. Painters, plumbers and carpenters are hardworking, blue collar people just like us, but let’s face it, they do not understand what we deal with on a daily basis and probably would not care to stand in the hot sun for us.
