The primaries have passed and now it’s time to focus on the November 6 general election, which will effect all of us on many levels.

We cannot stress enough how important it is to vote and support PBA-endorsed candidates and urge your friends and family to do the same.

Elected officials on every level—municipal, county state and federal—will be addressing issues that will directly impact your life. By voting you are acting in your own best interests.

All PBA-endorsed candidates go through a screen-ing process before a panel of members who will be directly effected by the decision. The panel votes on their recommendation for endorsement, which is then put before the entire PBA Board of Directors. Those candidates who are approved by a majority of the board reviews the Broward County PBA endorsement.

As government employees, you need friends in government to help protect your interests. The only way to make that happen is to get LEO-friendly candidates in as many offices as possible. That means not only do you need to vote, you need to encourage those around you to vote, and to vote for candidates that have been endorsed by the PBA.

We will be announcing our full list of endorse-ments in the September and October issues of The

The Florida PBA and the state teach-ers’ union filed a brief with the Florida Supreme Court on June 28. The brief is

a response to one previously filed by the State of Florida seeking to overturn the circuit court decision finding a 3% employee contribution and loss of an annual COLA unconstitutional.

Oral arguments before the Florida Supreme Court have been scheduled for Friday, Septem-ber 7 at 9:00 am. A decision is expected by the end of the year.

Pat Hanrahan

I know you are probably getting tired of hearing this from me, but I intend to remind you every chance I get about the importance of the upcoming November 6th elec-tion. Start by making sure you are a registered voter and commit to getting out and

voting! Don’t leave it up to others. And make sure you go through the entire ballot.

Voting in every election is not only a privilege that many people do not get to enjoy but it is crucial to every one of you and your families. It has a direct impact on all of our futures. If you live in a municipality and work for the county, help your brothers and sisters who do work there and, in return, we ask our brothers and sisters who work for various different cities to help out with the county elections. Statewide elections and constitutional officers affect all of us so we should all be equally attentive to those races.

I have been informing you of an impending situation with the retention of three Florida Supreme Court Justices that will be voting on our pending lawsuits against the wrongful injustices and unconstitutional harm that has been done to our retire-ment, paychecks and benefits. The PBA is intensely committed to fight off the attacks on your paychecks and those who do not have our best interest at heart. Each of you, regardless of which agency you work for, deserves the very best and more.

The PBA goes through a great deal of effort to gather information on the candidates running for office in order to make sound decisions for our members and their fami-lies. Prior to the elections, PBA representatives from all over the county volunteer to serve on the screening committees to question candidates about their positions on is-sues important to law enforcement, evaluate their answers, review their past decisions, and then make a recommendation of endorsements to the PBA Board of Directors. We feel that those candidates who are endorsed are the most likely to serve the best interest of law enforcement. Sometimes you may not agree with those endorsements, but the PBA is very strategic and purposeful when we make our decisions. However, for hopefully obvious reasons, we cannot always openly explain why certain decisions were made. But we do try to keep the best interest of our membership at heart. Please make your voice be heard. Your vote does make a difference. Please vote and support the PBA-endorsed candidates.

Contact the PBA, each and every one of you, because much needs to be done and we need your help, all of you not just some, to do it. The PBA has been very successful over the years but it is a never ending process. Although some—even amongst our own—are trying to divide or pull while we push, our strength comes directly from our ability to stand united.

Remember, reflect and honor those who have given their all in service to their country to preserve our heritage of freedom. And as always, keep those who are serving in our Armed Forces in your thoughts and prayers and also please pause for a moment to remember those brave souls who have not yet returned home – POW, MIA, KIA.

We are proud to represent each and every one of you who is brave enough, proud enough and strong enough to wear the badge. You are among the best in Broward County, the State of Florida and the Nation. I thank each of you and your families for your sacrifices, your hard work and the risks you take.

Raffle Winner Gives Back

BSO Deputy Jared Weiss, winner of the recent raffle that benefitted the family of BSO Sgt. Ronnie DeAngelo, took his generosity a step

further by donating his two-night stay at Hawk’s Cay Resort back to Ronnie and his wife so that they could spend some much-needed time together.

Thank you, Jared, for your selflessness. It will not be forgotten.

Another Family In NeedNew raffle being held for a second BSO family

Another member of the BSO family has been touched by cancer and needs your help. Deputy John Meiers’ son, Cody, has been

diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a type of cancer that affects the bones.

To assist the Meiers with the expenses involved with Cody’s treatment, the PBA is holding a raffle to raise money for the Hope Fund. Once again we are offering a two-day stay at the Hawk’s Cay Resort on Duck Key.

Tickets are five dollars each or six for $25. The drawing will be held on September 21.

To get tickets or for more information, contact Jeff Poole at 954-401-6118.

Prison Privatization: State Appeal DismissedPBA prevails again

On July 24 the First District Court of Appeal dismissed the Florida Attorney General’s appeal of the Circuit Court’s ruling on prison

privatization because “Attorney General lacks stand-ing to initiate an appeal on her own.”

Legislators added “proviso” language in the 2011-2012 budget that attempted to push through prison privatization without debate. The Florida PBA main-tained that the legislature violated Florida statutes by burying the issue in the budget. Circuit Court Judge Jackie Fulford agreed.

“We can now put this issue behind and move for-ward with other important issues facing the state,” said Florida PBA Executive Director Matt Puckett.Source: FLPBA
