Make-A-Wish® Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley 2013 Report to the Community 1

Dear Friend of Make-A-Wish®:

With your help, Make-A-Wish® Philadelphia & Susquehanna Valley provides more than short-lived moments of joy for seriously ill chil-dren. Rather, a wish fulfilled is a life-altering experience that posi-tively shapes the lives of many for the long-term. The outcome of a multi-phase Wish Impact Study led by Make-A-Wish’s national office revealed that our wish granting program greatly influences the lives of the children we serve, their parents & siblings, medical professionals, and the community-at-large.

When a wish is fulfilled, it transforms lives. Most adult former wish children say their wish experiences helped to save their lives – 97% said they experienced improved mental and emotional health, and 79% believe the wish experience contributed to their recovery. Physi-cians and nurses see the vital role that a positive state of mind plays in a patient’s ability to fight illness and 89% believe that the wish experi-ence can influence a child’s physical health. Furthermore, the act of wish granting serves to strengthen communities. 92% of volunteers and 86% of adult former wish kids expressed a deeper commitment to philanthropy and/or volunteering. We are pleased to share additional statistics with you inside this report on page 2.

It takes an entire community to make each wish special. Whether you are a volunteer, donor or sponsor, you are making a lasting impact on the lives of area children. Thank you for your compassionate and generous support.

With sincere gratitude,

Nathan J. Andrisani, Esq.Chairman of the Board

Dennis J. Heron President & CEO

WISH IMPACT STUDY

The first-ever Wish Impact Study led by Make-A-Wish’s national office surveyed health professionals, parents of wish kids, adult former wish kids, and Make-A-Wish volunteers. They were asked questions to determine what effect our mission has on the children we serve, their families and their communities. The results confirm what we’ve always believed: that Make-A-Wish makes the world better.

Adult Former Wish Kids97% Experienced improved mental and emotional health.79% Reported that the wish experience marked a turning point in their treatment and recovery.83% Experienced improved physical health and strength.

Medical Professionals89% Wish experiences can influence a wish kid’s physical health.75% Wish experiences can decrease wish kid’s sadness and depression.84% Report a deeper commitment to philanthropy and volunteering.

Parents98% The wish experience made us feel like a “normal” family again.92% My child felt re-empowered to influence decisions.88% Felt less isolated when their children made a wish.

Volunteers92% Felt an increased desire to give back and continue helping other families.95% Report an increased sense of compassion.92% Felt more committed to philanthropy and volunteer work.

“In a few days, Make-A-Wish gives you back all the happiness you’ve lost in months in a hospital. I believe that my wish made me the person I am today. Make-A-Wish gave me a week in Disney World, but it also gave me strength, optimism and positivity. It taught me that good can come out of any situation and that even when you are the sickest you have ever been, there is still a prince or princess inside of you that chemotherapy cannot damage. I went from a healthy toddler to a cancer patient in an instant, but Make-A-Wish helped me realize that a cancer patient is not all I would ever be. Make-A-Wish is truly what made my world rosy again.” Lauren B.
