LETTER from the CEO

Delivering on our promise to bring

world-class health care to Columbus gives us

reason to celebrate at St. Francis. In 2011, we

asked you to support our Power of Partnership

campaign to transform and expand St. Francis’

existing facility to better serve our community.

In 2013, we realized that vision with the opening

of our new heart and women’s hospitals.

Now our community has access to two

world-class facilities. Our Heart Hospital offers

patients access to highly skilled open heart

surgeons, vascular surgeons, cardiologists and

electrophysiologists, plus advanced technolo-

gy, in beautiful surroundings. Our Women’s

Hospital offers the convenience of one stop for

all women’s services from mammography and

ultrasounds to labor and delivery. All services

in both hospitals are in close proximity to each

other, saving patients time and putting them

closer to their physicians.

If you have not yet seen our new facilities,

please visit and see what we as a community,

including our physicians, have accomplished

together. Once you set foot in our new Butler

Pavilion, I think you’ll be amazed that we

now have a world-class facility right here

in Columbus.

While our new facilities are already

impacting patient care and satisfaction, our

physicians and staff continue to strive daily to

raise our quality and safety standards to new

levels. As a result, St. Francis was recognized

with numerous awards, accreditations and

certifications this past year, all of which reflect

our commitment to putting patients first.

This commitment was one reason St. Francis

was invited to join the Mayo Clinic Care

Network last November. The network gives

physicians access to the latest Mayo

knowledge and expertise when planning

patient care. Thus, you and your family now

have access to Mayo expertise close to home.

For all of these achievements, I am

grateful. Thank you to our physicians for their

vision and support, to you for partnering with

us and to our staff for all they do each day to

provide the best possible care. I look forward

to seeing what more we will accomplish

together in 2014.

Cardiac Care THE NEXT GENERATION

In 2013, St. Francis laid the foundation for bringing the next generation of cardiaccare to Columbus and the region with theopening of its new Heart Hospital and therecruitment of a cardiothoracic surgeontrained in advanced minimally invasive surgery, including robotics. The St. Francis Heart Hospital, whichopened in May, consolidated all cardiacservices and specialists at one state-of-theart facility. By year-end, Dr. CharlesAnderson had agreed to come to Columbusto establish the area’s first advanced minimally invasive cardiothoracic program. Bringing with him 14 years of cardiothoracicsurgery experience, Dr. Anderson has performed robotic surgery the past sevenyears, including two years at EmorySpecialty Associates at St. Joseph’s ofAtlanta. His vision for St. Francis’ programincludes advanced minimally invasive bypasssurgery, mitral valve repair and tricuspidvalve repair, atrial fibrillation, revascularizationand minimally invasive procedures for thoracic and pulmonary diseases, includinglung cancer. While patients experience less pain and afaster return to normal activities with advanced minimally invasive procedures, improvedpatient outcomes are the primary benefit. “Patients typically have a higher successrate particularly for mitral valve repair ascompared to traditional open heart surgery,”explains Anderson.

Advances in Cardiothoracic Techniques Traditional open chest surgery, includingmitral valve repair and bypass surgery, requires putting a patient on a heart-lung

Heart disease continues as the leading cause of death for both men and women. Almost 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year— one in four deaths. Death rates due to heart disease are highest in the South.¹

¹ Death rates due to heart disease were highest in the South from 2007–2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

BENEFITS of Advanced Cardiothoracic Surgery

• Shorter hospital stay

• Less pain and scarring

• Lower risk of wound infections

• Fewer blood transfusions

• Quicker return to normal activities and lifestyle

Dr. Charles Anderson is developingan advanced minimally invasivecardiothoracic surgery program at St. Francis.

Why did you decide to specialize in cardiothoracic surgery? As a paramedic in Omaha, Neb., I was exposedto a lot of people with cardiac disease and sawits devastating effects. From the beginning of my medical career, I wanted to specialize in cardiothoracic surgery. I completed general surgery training with that goal in mind. With cardiothoracic surgery, you get to see dramaticresults in patients’ quality of life.

How have robotics improved cardiothoracic surgery? With robotic surgery, particularly a valve operation, we have duplicated the tried-and-true techniques but through a less invasiveapproach. Frequently this allows for a higherrate of successful valve repair and lowerrequirement for valve replacement.

What are the most common questions patients have?Besides the usual questions about recoveryand what to expect, many patients ask who will actually be doing the surgery, me or therobot. I reassure them that the robot is simplyanother tool the surgeon uses. The robot actsas an extension of the surgeon’ s hands. Everymovement is controlled by the surgeon.

bypass machine to circulate oxygenatedblood during surgery. The surgeon mustmake an eight- to 12-inch incision down thecenter of the chest and divide the breastplate to expose the heart, frequently usingcardiopulmonary bypass with or withoutstopping the heart. In contrast, surgeons perform minimallyinvasive heart surgery through five smallport incisions made in the right side of apatient’s chest without needing to split thebreastbone. Surgeons operate between theribs, which results in less pain and quickerrecovery for most people. As in open chestsurgery, minimally invasive open heart surgery requires stopping the heart temporarily, diverting blood flow from theheart using a heart-lung machine. By using minimally invasive or roboticassisted approaches, the smaller incisionallows the patient to heal quicker with fasterreturn to activity than after the standardopen approach. Most patients can resumetheir normal activities after only three weekscompared to eight weeks with conventionalsurgery.

Robotics at St. Francis The St. Francis Robotics and MinimallyInvasive Surgery Center first began offeringrobotics in fall 2012, starting with robotically-performed gynecologic surgery. In 2012, theprogram was expanded to include advancedminimally invasive colorectal surgery. Staff training for robotic cardiothoracic sur-gery began in early 2014. St. Francis expectsto offer advanced minimally invasive cardio-thoracic services in the second half of 2014.

(Center) Christy Schreck felt like she "had a whole support team to bring a little baby into the world." Members of her team included (L-R) Dr. Catalina Aranas, Dr. Joel Fine, lactationspecialist Carolyn Bentely, Dr. Dana Cason and Laura Christmas, RN . Christy Schreck was glad to have her obstetrician, Dr. Catalina Aranas, just stepsaway when her son, Owen, arrived December12. Dr. Aranas was in her office when she got acall from Christy’s nurse. The baby was comingquickly. Dr. Aranas raced upstairs and within two minutes, she was delivering the healthyseven-pound, three-ounce, baby boy. “If I’d had to drive, park and walk, I would nothave made it,” says Dr. Aranas. “The new Laborand Delivery Unit is so convenient. If there’s aproblem, it takes a minute or less to get there.” Owen’s birth was Christy’s third delivery, and she describes it as “by far the best.”“There’s something about a new facility

that makes you feel sowarm and fuzzy. It’s decorated beautifullyand very clean,” shesays. “The birthing suite had plenty of room for my mother, sister, husband, theanesthesiologist and nurses. Even with everyone in theroom, we never feltcramped. I felt like I

had a whole support team to bring a littlebaby into the world.” When Christy had pain on the side of herstomach, anesthesiologist Dr. Joel Fine responded immediately. The Labor and DeliveryUnit has its own team of anesthesiologists so moms don’t wait long for pain relief. OnceOwen was born, neonatologist Dr. Dana Casonexamined him right away. “It’s really good having a doctor who specializes in newborncare available at all times,” says Christy. Christy and husband Michael Schreck werealso impressed with the sterilizing light used todisinfect rooms before and after each family’s stay. The machine uses ultraviolet light to killgerms on the walls, floor and sofa.

A main benefit of the new Women’s Hospitalis having all women’s services in one place.During an appointment with Dr. Aranas two days before Owen’s birth, Christy learned herbaby’s heart rate was slowing. Rather than drive to another facility, Christy took the elevator upstairs for continuous fetal monitoring. An hour later, she learned all was fine andwas on her way home. “It was very quick, which was nice,” she says. Though Christy has two other small children, she was glad for lactation specialist CarolynBentley when she had questions about feedingOwen at night. “She was in constant contact byphone when I needed her,” Christy explains.“She asked lots of questions about his weight, coloring and birth to determine night feedings.Even though he’s my third, each baby’s needsare different.” First-time mother Katie Collins texted nurseeducator Alicia Newton when she, too, was concerned about feeding her baby. “I was running low, and she was starving,” says Katie.Alicia put Katie in touch with Carolyn, whocalled and asked Katie lots of questions. “Sheexplained that it was normal for moms to haveless milk in the evening, which was when I wasstruggling. She said my baby was feeding fine.” Six two-hour childbirth classes at St. Francisprepared Katie and husband Scott for what toexpect. “The teachers were extremely person-able and friendly,” she says. “It gave us bothpeace of mind.” Katie’s labor lasted 35 hours beforedaughter Ansley was born November 14, yet she never felt stressed. “All the nurseswere my cheerleaders. They worked togetheras a team,” she says. “The process was very smooth.”

Courtney Heynen, CNM, was part of the team that delivered Ansley. She says that thestaff works particularly well together for sucha new facility. “Their love for their job shinesthrough,” she says, “And the room design provides a calming environment for the birthing process.” Katie’s mother, Carol Yarbrough, was alsoimpressed by the staff and facility. “They werevery considerate and competent in all ways. They never made me feel like I was in the way,”says Carol. “Alicia (Newton) gave Katie a lot ofassurance she was doing everything right.” “I was taken care of physically and emotionally,” says Katie. “I don’t know how you could have a better experience. I am soglad I got to deliver at St. Francis.”

(L) Nurse educator Alicia Newton, RN, taught birthingclasses attended by first-time mother Katie Collins.

Dr. Dana Cason, a neonatologist, provides newborn screenings and cares for babies until they go home.

(R) Dr. Stephen Lange, Southeast regional director, Mayo Clinic Care Network presents a crystal plaque to (L-R) Robert Granger, St. Francis president and CEO, and Bo Bradley, St. Francis Board of Trustees chairman, following the November 13 announcement of St. Francis’ membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

Page 9: St. Francis Hospital 2013 Community Report

St. Francis’ membership in the Mayo Clinic CareNetwork offers patients the benefit of Mayo Clinicexpertise while staying close to home. Since the hospital joined the network last November, physicianshave reached out to Mayo specialists to consult oncomplex cases. Dr. Marc Goldman was one of the first physiciansto consult with a Mayo expert. One of his patients hadan unruptured brain aneurysm. “I was not sure if itwas technically feasible to treat this aneurysm byendovascular occlusion” he says. “Mayo’s responsewas prompt, and we moved forward after that.” Dr. Edwin Page, an ENT specialist, also sought asecond opinion from Mayo. He had a cancer patientwho had completed radiation therapy, and he wantedto be sure the patient did not need surgery. With thepatient’s permission, he submitted an electroniceConsult to Mayo. “Within a week, I received an official, well-researched opinion that confirmed he did not need surgery,” he says. “It was reassuring forthe patient, too.” With the exponential growth of medical knowl-edge, the sharing and managing of that knowledgewill become increasingly important to ensure patientsget the best care. Both St. Francis and Mayo Clinicrecognize the value of collaboration and are dedicat-ed to improving the delivery of health care. St. Franciswas invited to join the Mayo Clinic Care Network aftera Mayo team visited the hospital and assessedsafety, quality, service and operations. The teamwas particularly impressed with St. Francis’ culture, the collaboration between administratorsand physicians and the hospital’s new facilities. “St. Francis is an outstanding institution that will become even more effective through collabora-tion,” said Dr. Stephen Lange, Southeast medicaldirector of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. “This collaboration enhances St. Francis' commitment to do what is best for health care in our community,” said Robert Granger, St. Francis president and CEO. St. Francis is one of 27 members of the MayoClinic Care Network nationally and will remain an

independent, community-owned and operated hospital. From Mayo’s perspective, collaborating with members through the network enhances their mission. By sharingknowledge and expertise, by working together, physicians can meet the needs of patients and improve the delivery of health care.

Why did Mayo Clinic choose St. Francis to be a member in the Mayo Clinic Care Network?St. Francis shares a common philosophy, commitment and mission to improve the delivery of health care through high-quality,data-driven, evidence-based medical care and treatment. We were selected to join thenetwork following a comprehensive evaluationof our organization that included our quality, safety and service efforts.

Why is St. Francis collaborating with Mayo Clinic?St. Francis has a long history of service excellence. St. Francis has made tremendousprogress in our approach to care based on thelatest medical knowledge and best practicesfrom leaders in healthcare. This new collabora-tion with Mayo Clinic will support us as we continually seek out the latest in research and treatment recommendations.

What does this formal collaboration mean for patients?St. Francis physicians will have access to the medical knowledge and expertise of Mayo Clinic when treating patients. These resources include:• AskMayoExpert, an online point-of-care

tool developed by Mayo Clinic physicians. This clear, concise resource offers disease management, care guidelines, treatment recommendations and reference materials for a wide variety of medical conditions.

• eConsults that serve to connect St. Francis physicians with Mayo Clinic experts when St. Francis physicians want additional input regarding a patient’s care.

Does this mean that St. Francis could be purchased by Mayo? No. This agreement is not an acquisition or merger. Mayo Clinic Care Network members St. Francis remain independent, community-owned healthcare providers.

Will this agreement mean patients will automatically be referred to Mayo Clinic? No, there is no obligation for referrals to Mayo Clinic. The primary goal of St. Francisand Mayo Clinic through the Mayo Clinic Care Network is to help patients gain the benefits of Mayo Clinic expertise while continuing to receive their care as close tohome as possible, ensuring they travel outsidethe region for care only when necessary.

In November 2013, St. Francis joined the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

members through innovation and excellence in clinical care, education and service. In 2013, St. Francis

invested more than $15 million in community benefits. Through these efforts, St. Francis touched more

than 36,000 people in the valley.

In our daily lives, each of us reveals who we are by what we do. Our actions, even more than our words,

show those around us what we believe in, what we value and who we are. The same is true of organiza-

tions, and it’s certainly true of St. Francis. Everything we do, whether it’s in a patient’s hospital room, a

community center or a church, reflects the hospital’s values.

In 2013, St. Francis invested more than $15 million in community benefit.
