Everything we do at Orange County United Way is

dedicated to creating opportunities for people in

our community so they can live happier, healthier

and more productive lives. As our organization

has evolved, we have grown into an even stronger

leadership role by leading collaborations and organizing

partners from public, private and nonprofit sectors to help

solve the most critical issues facing far too many individuals and

families. At the core–we help people learn, grow, aspire and live their best lives by focusing

on the building blocks of Education, Income, Health and Housing.

Last year, because of you, more than 185,000 residents received a hand up. For many, the

services were truly life-changing. For others, the support may be less dramatic, but each

number is important because it means that one more person got a chance–and that people

they had never met, nor likely ever will, cared enough to extend a helping hand.

This year, we celebrate another milestone–our 90th year serving men, women and

children in Orange County. As we near the century mark, we are dedicated to doing even

more in the future by making significant, lasting changes that will truly alter the course

of our community.

In 2013, we launched FACE 2024, our 10-year, community-wide goals and action plan,

focused on the well-being of the next generation. Yet we cannot move forward until we

stabilize those with the greatest need in our community today. Creating lasting change

requires a proactive approach by helping to prevent problems before they occur.

By working collaboratively, we know we can change the community we see around us today

by creating pathways to a better education, greater financial stability, permanent housing

and healthier lifestyles. This work represents a streamlined and efficient structure and new

goals and metrics to which we will hold ourselves accountable, as demonstrated in this

report to our community.

collective impactNo single organization, governmental entity or individual has the ability to solve all of our community's most challenging problems. This is why we embrace a comprehensive approach called Collective Impact. United Way is uniquely positioned as a leader to engage people and organizations from across Orange County who bring passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done.

EACH YEAR IN OUR COMMUNITY,N E A R LY 4 , 0 0 0 S T U D E N T S DROP OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL

Some problems are simply too complex to solve with any single approach. To begin to turn back that trend, we need to work on several fronts — assist vulnerable families when their children are infants, improve classrooms from preschool through high school, provide after-school support and college assistance access, tackle the issue of summer learning loss and get much smarter about addressing students’ social and emotional needs at every stage. Through the power of partnerships, we are working across many fronts to tackle the gap in education.

“We want Orange County to lead the state in the discussion of 21st Century Skills and CommonCore Standards. After years of public outcry, many local school districts are shifting theirattention in bringing awareness and a different approach for teaching and preparing our futureleaders so they can compete in a global economy. Now is the time to seize this moment andhave California lead by example.” — Senator Lou Correa

OUR STRATEGYTaking on the education challenge requires a commitment to education from birth-to-18 continuum. We can’t focus on high school alone. High school dropouts are 12 years in the making, usually starting with early education.

Read Aloud: 15 Minutes. Every Child. Every Parent. Every Day.It’s as simple as A-B-C. When parents and peers take 15 minutes from their day to read with a child in their lives, children are more prone to successfully pursuing their education. To ensure access to quality books, United Way launched a Virtual Book Drive to kick start this public awareness and volunteer engagement program.

The K-3 Read to Succeed GrantsThese two-year projects are designed to help students read at grade level by the end of third grade. K-3 Read to Succeed Grants support innovative programs with a demonstrated capacity to implement promising practices and enhance early grade literacy both within school and out of school environments.

OC STEM A growing network comprised of local funders, with a mission to partner with students, parents, teachers, businesses and schools, is helping to improve the quality and outcome of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education to develop critical thinking skills for the creative and innovative leaders of tomorrow.

MESA The MESA program supports two Math, Engineering, Science and Achievement (MESA) classes at South Junior High School in the Anaheim Union High School District. During the first academic year, 62 educationally disadvantaged students were enrolled in the program and were able to excel and graduate.

Latinos UnidosThe first-of-its-kind career-mentoring program targeting Latino at-risk students is a district-wide program at the Garden Grove Unified School District. It features proven tutoring and academic support strategies, peer mentorship, community service, college preparation and social events in order to promote increased classroom participation and attendance.

Destination GraduationA unique county-wide partnership serving three school districts includes 14 schools that serve 2,000 at-risk high school students and their teachers with an enhanced academic program. This includes career exploration opportunities, field trips, on-site career mobile units, parental engagement training and exposure to local corporations and business leaders. 2014 represents the first graduating class from this program – and a 100 percent graduation rate.

“For the past four years, Destination Graduation has truly helped me to find myself as a person and helped me with goals for the future. By 2024, I can picture myself notonly being successful, but also atthat point, beginning to start my family, beginning to start my careeras a history teacher and working myway up to see what life has to offer. I LIVE UNITED because I believethat everyone has the potentialto go to college.”

INCOMEHelping Families and Individuals Achieve Financial Stability

DUE TO ORANGE COUNTY’S HIGH COST OF LIVING, NEARLY 1 IN 4 OF OUR NEIGHBORS LIVE IN POVERTY

Helping Orange County’s most underserved population find secure financial footing makes sense for all of us. As individuals and families become more stable, the infrastructure of our community will improve. When more people have access to tools like employment training, financial literacy services and a path to decent jobs that pay living wages, the more these individuals and their families are able to contribute to Orange County’s economic growth and realize their full potential. To this end, we support a number of strategic approaches to ensure greater economic stability.

“Women Helping Women/ Men2Work would not be where it is today without the support of and partnership with United Way. We were able to launch our Employment Readiness Department, which has provided in-depth job placement services to thousands of people in our community.” — Janie Wolicki, WHW - Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director

Helping Families and Individuals Achieve Financial Stability

OUR STRATEGYWe are focused on the obstacles that prevent families from getting ahead financially by addressing the most important factors in financial stability: career opportunities, skills improvement and guidance in financial management and empowerment.

SPARKPOINT OC FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT CENTERSWe aim to increase the financial literacy of low-income families and individuals by encouraging asset-building and retention, linking our neighbors in need with financial education, and providing mainstream financial resources and services.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMSWe support programs that directly increase or provide employment opportunities for low-income individuals through job development, placement and/or employment retention services.

HEALTHWorking Toward a Healthier Community

MORE THAN 1/3 OF OUR LOCAL ORANGE COUNTY CHILDRENARE OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE

We believe that by strengthening the health of our neighbors in need, we can strengthen the health of our overall community. Studies find that improved standards of health lead not only to greater life expectancies, but also to increased overall economic productivity and output. Even minor illnesses can be a major financial burden for people in our community—and health problems in our youth lead to school absences, an early predictor for dropping out of high school.

“United Way has been an important leader in convening the nonprofit community ... to understand Covered California and Covered OC while encouraging development of collaborative efforts for its effective implementation. Covered California has been a critical component to getting people linked to affordable health care and to creating a pathway to a healthier life.” — Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez

Working Toward a Healthier Community

OUR STRATEGYBy ensuring that more people have access to quality medical care, opportunities for nutritional education and physical fitness programs, we will improve the overall health of our community.

2-1-1 ORANGE COUNTY This 24-hour information and referral hotline connects vulnerable individuals and families to the health and human services they need. It facilitates collaboration between agencies, funders and the community, directing resources to where they are needed most. 2-1-1 serves as the primary source of health and human services information to support critical decision making in our community.

FAMILYWIZE PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNT CARDWith this prescription discount card, individuals and families can purchase medicine at a discounted price if they do not have health insurance or prescription coverage.

HEALTH FUNDERS PARTNERSHIP OF ORANGE COUNTY Committed to creating a healthier Orange County, this organization enhances the impact and efficiency of the community’s health safety net by identifying strategic issues for collaborative funding and the potential to leverage resources.

“Individuals who have health coverage are able to be more secure, worry less and focus on other important things in their lives. United Way is doing great work by collaborating with other organizations to make sure that more people benefit from the linkage of health care to prevention strategies. Every day we see people who are so relieved that they have health care in place. I LIVE UNITED because I believe in a healthier community.”

HOUSINGImproving Access to Affordable Housing

26,000 SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN ARE HOUSING-INSECURE, LIVING DOUBLED OR TRIPLED-UP WITH FAMILIES

We recognize that access to stable housing can be the foundation for a successful future, and is a critical component of family stability and community success. Establishing a permanenthome is the catalyst toward academicachievement, a healthier lifestyleand a steadier income.

“Simply put, housing is the answer to ending homelessness. The need to develop more affordable housing is self-evident. Rapid Rehousing has also emerged as one of the most exciting and efficient means of ending homelessness, costing a fraction of the traditional transitional housing model in most cases. With an emphasis on housing and Rapid Rehousing, we can end homelessness in Orange County in just a few years.” —Larry Haynes, Executive Director of Mercy House

Improving Access to Affordable Housing

OUR STRATEGY: To be financially independent, we will ensure that working families have access to permanent affordable housing. In order for our youth to succeed in school and live healthy lives, they need the security and consistency of a permanent address.

RAPID REHOUSING FOR FAMILIESWITH CHILDREN GRANTSThese two-year projects support programs that target homeless and housing- insecure families with children, working to promptly get them into their own housing in conjunction with individualized supportive services to prevent future homelessness.

ARMORY EMERGENCY SHELTER PROGRAM The Armory Emergency Shelter Program is the only large-scale emergency shelter program in Orange County. It operates on a seasonal basis using the California National Guard’s Armory Sites in Fullerton and Santa Ana, providing up to 200 beds of emergency shelter each night of operation for individuals who are living on the streets.

COORDINATED ASSESSMENT & CENTRALIZED INTAKE SYSTEM In compliance with the Housing Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing Act, a Coordinated Assessment & Centralized Intake System will create a single point of entry in the County for individuals and families in need of housing.

CORPORATE PARTNERS THAT CHANGE LIVESNearly 1,000 companies throughout Orange County participate in annual LIVE UNITED Corporate Campaigns, enabling their employees to contribute through year-long payroll deductions or one-time pledges. These funds support basic needs as well as education, financial stability programs, medical care and housing.

WESTERN DIGITAL raised more than $3.2 million in just one month’s time, including $1 million from its Irvine headquarters, through its annual Workplace Campaign. This is the second consecutive year that the technology firm, through employee donations, has reached this milestone and, once again, they received the United Way DIMENSIONS IN GIVING AWARD.

Two branches of PACIFIC LIFE got their “game on” at their 2013-14 Campaign Kick-Off, which incorporated a ‘Price is Right’ theme. The Newport Beach Pacific

Life location held its event in September, just before the Aliso Viejo office Kick-Off.

Golden Key Partner FLUOR kicked off its 2013-14 Employee Giving Campaign in September.Last year, Fluor had the greatest number of Leaders’ Society members–individuals who gave $1,000-$9,999. An integral factor in Fluor’s culture focuses on giving back and supporting the local community.

Big 4: United for Collective Impact is a collaboration between United Way and the county’s top four accounting firms; DELOITTE LLP, ERNST & YOUNG LLP, KPMG LLP and PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS LLP (PWC) aimed at increasing giving by 10 percent—and took the four organizations’ collective donations from $1.3 million last year, to $1.43 million in one year.

People like Wendy Nugent keep the LIVE UNITED movement alive. As Senior Communications Specialist of the AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, a Golden Key Corporate Partner, Wendy uses her voice to advocate for our community. In addition to managing the Auto Club of Southern California Workplace Campaign for the past six years with colleague, Kathy Klute-Nelson, Wendy has taken our Tale of Two Counties tour eight times.

DESTINATION GRADUATION students at Segerstrom High School learned some valuable lessons from Larry Wood, Corporate Vice President of Transcatheter Heart Valves at EDWARDS LIFESCIENCES, a United Way Golden

Key Partner that supports this high school dropout prevention initiative. “When I graduated high school, I didn’t have a great appreciation for the importance of college. It was really when I was

working on my master’s degree, that I truly understood its value,” said Wood, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees while working his way up at Edwards Lifesciences.

Tamer Akkas got involved with United Way more than two decades ago through our Corporate Partnership with ALCON. “When Alcon started the United Way campaign, I gave because

the company contribution would increase the gift to the community.” This may have been his introduction, but Tamer has remained a vital supporter of our mission.

LIVE UNITED MOMENTSOrange County United Way’s WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY FUND BREAKFAST brought together more than 650 of the County’s most influential women philanthropists, business leaders and community volunteers to raise awareness and funds to help women and girls in Orange County build self-sufficient lives. This year, the Women’s Philanthropy Fund Breakfast raised more than $310,000.

Last June, United Way raised more than $170,000 at the fifth annual WALK UNITED at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. More than 2,400 community champions from across Orange County came out to the ballpark for the event to raise funds and awareness. WELLS FARGO signed on as the Grand Slam Sponsor in 2013 and is the Presenting Sponsor for 2014. WALK UNITED gives hope, help and access to a better tomorrow for thousands of Orange County residents who are struggling. Last year, UPS was honored with the Corporate Challenge Award for recruiting more than 500 walkers for the event.

United Way celebrated nine decades of improving lives and strengthening the community when we hosted our 90TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION at the Irvine Marriott. Themed ‘On the Road to 100,’ the event featured a historic timeline, uplifting videos, a moving testimonial and live performances by the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach. We look forward to making an even bigger difference in our community over the next 10 years.

United Way led the inaugural ORANGE COUNTY VISIONARY LEADERS’ CONFERENCE in March 2014, convening the County, city and educational leaders at Angel Stadium to create the roadmap for the future of our community. Elected officials discussed the ten-year community-wide goals to address the many challenges facing local residents. Attendees discussed ways to collaborate and make significant, long-term changes.

We salute the following partners for investing in our Community Impact work:

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AND ENGAGEMENTTOCQUEVILLE SOCIETYFounded in Orange County in 1987 by local philanthropic leaders including Peter Ochs and Walter Gerken, United Way’s Tocqueville Society has since grown to a membership of more than 275 local community and business leaders who join more than 26,000 members throughout the United States. The Tocqueville Society recognizes philanthropic leaders who invest $10,000 or more annually in United Way and offers additional opportunities for engagement through affinity groups.

Michael K. Hayde, CEO of Western National Group, was selected as the recipient of the 2013 National Tocqueville Society Award for his support of Orange County United Way, his instrumental role in establishing and supporting United Way in France and his work expanding United Ways into other areas of Western Europe. Each year, United Way Worldwide selects one individual to receive the National Tocqueville Society Award. The criterion used to evaluate and select the winner is: Exceptional and sustained personal involvement with United Way; Tangible impact in gifts of leadership, time, talent and treasure beyond the borders of your community; Creativity in finding better ways to implement sustainable solutions to problems in the community; and Inspiring others to Give, Advocate or Volunteer.

He is the second Orange County member to be recognized in less than a decade, as Peter and Gail Ochs were awarded with this honor in 2006. Mr. Hayde epitomizes the concept of giving back to the community in time, talent and treasure, which has been exemplified clearly through his long term impact on our organization and our community.
