IEW Following a successful campaign in

2012, the Seawolves return in 2013 with a tough road schedule ahead of them and the loss of key skiers from a year ago, but those obstacles won’t dis-tract them from their goals; to qualify a full team and peak at the National meet in Middlebury, VT, come March .

UAA, which posted its second-best team result at the NCAAs a year ago, lost four-time All-American and last year’s Nordic MVP Jaime Bronga, as well as five-time All-American Alpine skier Alex Parker. The loss of Steffie Heimer and Laura Rombach to gradua-tion also hurt the Nordic squad .

To fill their shoes, head coach Sparky Anderson – in his second year as head coach and seventh overall – will look to veterans Kayla Hoog-Fry, Ida Bjer-ka and Karina Smith to step up on the women’s side . The men’s team, which wasn’t as depleted by graduation, re-turns All-Americans Andreas Adde and Sean Alexander on the Alpine side, while Lukas Ebner and Lasse Mol-gaard-Nielsen return for their junior campaign on the cross country trails .

“The women are a much smaller group this year, but we were able to focus a lot of energy this fall on Anna (Berecz), Kayla, Vanessa (Berther), Ida, and Tay-lor (Guetschow),” said Anderson . “We had a great prep-period with everyone getting stronger, while our early sea-son on-snow camps have been super productive . The Nordic women’s team returns Karina and Maya (Radonich,) who are both working hard .”

“The men’s team is largely the same as last year . We lost Halfdan Falkum-Hansen, but still have big impact ath-letes returning across the roster includ-ing 2010 NCAA Slalom Champion Andreas Adde . The guys are solid and I really like the direction things are going . Nordic will see Lasse, Lukas, Galen (Johnston), and Davis (Dunlap) back in action . The team was competi-tive at the Alaska Cup in Fairbanks and

I think Coach Andrew Kastning saw what he wanted to see moving forward .”

In addition to the returners, the Sea-wolves have added seven newcomers – three men, four women – to help fill in the gaps . Expecting to make an impact on the Nordic side is Viktor Brannmark and John Glen for the men and Marine Dusser and Patricia Sprecher for the women .

“Viktor had a great race in Fairbanks and is looking to be a dominant force on the NCAA tour this season,” said An-derson . “Additionally, John should give us some depth as well, while Marine will be a beast in the skate races and is a very good skier technically . Patricia is solid and running standout Sarah Freis-tone will give us some depth .”

On the Alpine side, the Seawolves’ lone recruit was Cedrik Gagnon, who is ex-pected to come on strong for UAA after a successful fall .The 2013 slate will be ruthless for the Seawolves, placing them on the road

more than they are at home . UAA will spend the first part of the season in Colo-rado for the annual Spencer James Me-morial Colorado Invitational (Jan . 8-13) before seeing RMISA foes at the Denver Invitational late in January . From there, the Seawolves will compete at the Utah and New Mexico Invites that overlap from Jan . 31- Feb . 10 .

The postseason starts with the NCAA Western Regional, Feb . 22-24, in Boze-man, Mont ., before the Seawolves hope to qualify a full team to NCAA Nation-al Championships in Middlebury, Vt ., March 6-9 .

The Seawolves will need constant im-provement from all four teams to reach their goals, a task Anderson is confident they can achieve .

“We have a strong base, and I am fo-cused on steady progress,” said Ander-son . “Our goals are always to qualify a full NCAA Championship team and pre-pare them to peak at that event .”

SPARKY ANDERSONHead Coach 2nd Season

After five seasons as the Seawolves’ head Al-pine coach, Sparky Anderson enters his sec-

ond season as the head coach of the entire Alaska Anchorage ski program in 2013 . Prior to taking over head coaching du-ties in 2012, Anderson produced two national champions and seven downhill All-Americans throughout his five-year career from 2008-11 and

2002. Last season, Anderson helped the Seawolves to their fifth straight top-10 placing at the NCAAs, while finishing sixth overall at the RMISA/West Region Championships . In 2010, Anderson produced his second national champion in Andreas Adde, who won the men’s slalom. UAA landed a combined five skiers as All-Americans and finished 7th at the national meet. Anderson also helped UAA to a program-best second-place finish at the RMISA/West Region Championships . During his third season in 2009, Anderson helped UAA to a program-best fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and helped produce five All-Americans and six All-Conference members. Anderson guided freshman standout Alex Parker to four individual titles and the RMISA Women’s Alpine MVP, while UAA’s women’s Alpine team was the regional champion . In his first season back with UAA in 2008, Anderson helped guide the Seawolf Alpine squad to one of its most successful campaigns, qualify-ing a full squad of six skiers to NCAAs for the first time since 1999, while two racers earned All-America honors . UAA claimed the overall RMISA Alpine title by combining to score a conference championship meet-best 256 points, producing nine top-10 results . All told, the Seawolf downhill-ers combined for 25 individual top-10 results during the 2008 season . Anderson came as no stranger to UAA or collegiate ski racing, having coached the Seawolf Alpine squad in 2002, when UAA’s Aurore de Maulmont won the NCAA title in the giant slalom . Prior to coming to Alaska, he was the head ski coach at Brown University in Rhode Island from 1996-2000 . Prior to rejoining the UAA coaching staff, Anderson worked as the program director for the Alyeska Ski Club in Girdwood for seven years . A 1991 graduate of the University of Nevada, Anderson earned four letters in skiing with the Wolf Pack, serving as team captain his senior season . After college, he moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, where he taught skiing for the Flori Woerndle Ski School . A year away from ski racing proved to be too much, and Anderson moved to Innsbruck, Austria, where he spent two years coaching a small FIS team at the Inns-bruck International School . After leaving Europe, he moved to New Eng-land and spent two years coaching the Eastern Cup team at the Holderness School . In addition to his international experience, he holds USSA’s high-est level of coach’s certification and currently serves as the Alaska Division’s USSA coaches education clinician. Over the years, he has been invited to coach at multiple national and regional events . Anderson grew up in Northern California and raced out of Bear Valley . He now resides in Girdwood with his wife Diana and daughter Kéa .

DR. STEVE COBB Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage In 12 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic depart-ment, Dr . Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights . Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways .Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed five of the most memora-ble athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by four Elite Eight appearances for Seawolf basketball teams and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (six times), skiing (five times), and men’s & women’s track & field

(four times) . In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals . In the 2011-12 athletic campaign, the Seawolves placed a program-record 16th in NCAA Div . II standings in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which measures nearly 300 D-II programs nationwide on overall athletic success . Under Dr . Cobb’s leadership, construction has also begun on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus . He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s cur-rent facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010 . In 2005, Dr . Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endow-ment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA . Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008 . Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and SpringHill Suites Invitational volleyball tournaments . The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium . A former football coach, Dr . Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA . In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr . Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball . From 1992-95, Dr . Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach . He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90) .A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr . UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic.

The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from 10 of 11 sports for NCAA competition, including top-10 national team finishes by women’s basketball, both men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and men’s track & field.

Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented suc-cess in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 15 of the last 18 years.

This is UAA!ACADEMICS

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 stu-dents through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the Univer sity’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addic-tion Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a mini-mum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.
