Dear Members,

Slovenia is striving to ensure that it will no longer be linked to the economic crisis. Also, Slovenian business is working to no longer operate as an isolated hamlet that deals only with itself, and as a result operates merely as an observer and, consequently, as a loser. Therefore, because of the crisis, we have to be determined and exactly gather all our strength to carry on and jointly seek new opportunities for our wonderful and creative country and its people.

Now is the time to assume responsibility as individuals and as a community. As individuals, we have to be the best in what we do. AmCham Slovenia is aware that as a business community it bears a responsibility to connect all those who want to be active, and wish to constructively contribute to creating the conditions for an economically powerful and successful Slovenia.

We must realize the importance and value of cooperation and community. Slovenia will be good enough only when it will be better for all. So, let us all, who can contribute energy toward the development of Slovenia, unite. The government, our economy, non-profit organizations, all must have the goal of creating an innovative and deeply ethical environment in which young people believe in a bright future, and in which we have, instead of an outflow of young people from Slovenia, a situation that attracts talent to Slovenia, who will co-create our ‘beautiful country.’

We must become an open country that is involved in international political, economic, and social trends. That Slovenia is too closed to foreign investment, can be additionally confirmed by the lack of privatization – namely, the state-held shares in the companies, which significantly co-create GDP, are in comparison to other EU countries, too high – which in the long-term influences the global competitiveness of Slovenia. Privatization is one of the government’s commitments. It should, however, progress much faster and as much as possible, transparently. Privatization and foreign investments are necessary for further development of the state and society.

The greatest advantage of the Slovenian market is in its highly educated experts and innovative companies, developing top-notch solutions. These Slovenian company solutions win prizes both at home and abroad. Healthy economic growth is inseparably linked to innovations, as it is based on the ability of people and businesses to create new products, solutions, and services with new added value. Therefore, AmCham Slovenia will, upon its 15th Anniversary, focus its energy in supporting the penetration of innovative Slovenian companies into foreign markets.

I am an eternal optimist and I never want to make excuses why something can’t be done. Actually, I try to focus on how to optimally overcome challenges. AmCham Slovenia has been committed to creating a better business environment in Slovenia now for 15 years already. In the year we celebrate its anniversary, we will be even more active and determined. Thank you all for being part of our business community.

Sincerely,

Matej Potokar, MBA

Dear Friends,

As I think back on my time in Slovenia, I am filled with fond -- well mostly fond -- memories of the people I have met, the places I have visited, and the experiences I have had while serving as U.S. Ambassador. When I arrived in 2010, few predicted the tumultuous path Slovenia would follow these past three years. Yet, Slovenians have weathered each challenge with tenacity and courage, surprising even the country’s most virulent critics. This is especially true in the business community, which has been hit hard by the economic crisis at home and around the globe. Yes, I know, the ongoing economic crisis could have been handled even better and that even more daring and determined actions are needed in the coming year, but given the political and social circumstances, Slovenia has fared better than most would have predicted half a year ago.

Slovenia, as we have said many times, should be at the center of regional investments and operations. With its first-rate infrastructure, well-developed and highly-educated workforce, and geostrategic location, Slovenia should be an ideal place for U.S. companies to invest. Yet, “should be” is sometimes just a fairytale wish because in the past Slovenia has chosen not to capitalize on many of these assets. As a result, companies have chosen to take their business to other, friendlier business environments. The economic crisis, however, has shaken the foundations of the world economies and I am encouraged by progress that has been made recently towards improving the business climate in Slovenia and attracting more foreign direct investment.

The Slovenian government has pushed forward with a number of reforms to stabilize Slovenia’s economy which seemed impossible just a few years ago; taking real steps to bring order to public finances, enacting the golden fiscal rule, and securing support for privatization have helped to convince some skeptics that Slovenia can weather this storm. There will be more challenges ahead, to be sure, but I am optimistic the Prime Minister and her government have the will to keep Slovenia on the right path. We must hope that the desire for reform is not linked solely to the crisis; it would be an even greater tragedy for Slovenia if small improvements in GDP growth were to convince most Slovenes—again!—that economic reforms need not be undertaken.

In the midst of this tumultuous period, AmCham has remained a tireless advocate for the business community in Slovenia and it is my true privilege to serve as your honorary member. If patriotism is defined as selfless devotion to your fellow citizens, then AmCham deserves a medal. We have been honored to work together on a number of successful events – both large and small – that I believe have changed the business climate in Slovenia for the better. At business breakfasts and public forums, AmCham has unflinchingly asked the important questions and shined the spotlight on success stories, as well as areas in need of improvement. AmCham’s committees have researched key issues and presented recommendations to government leaders, ensuring the voice of the business community is heard. Perhaps most importantly, AmCham has taken an active role in mentoring the future business leaders of Slovenia through programs such as the Summer Economic Institute. The Embassy has been a proud supporter of AmCham Slovenia and will remain a strong partner for years to come.

Looking forward, I believe that the economic crisis in both of our countries has strengthened our ties and highlighted the importance of the relationship between the U.S. and Slovenia. There is much we can learn from each other and many mutual benefits to strong U.S.-Slovenia ties – for business leaders, students, and medical professionals, just to name a few. I am hopeful that Slovenia’s future will be bright and thank you for letting me be a small part of your journey over the past few years.

Sincerely,

H.E. Joseph A. Mussomeli

The possibility of strengthening business ties - both domestic and international - signed with the professional informative note of AmCham events puts us among the best organizers of business events in Slovenia. Our traditional event, the AmCham Business Breakfast, now has already more than 10 years of tradition, and has become an increasingly popular form of socializing in the business community with other stakeholders. We organize expert consultations (Professional Update), business cocktail gatherings, seminars, sports - family events, etc. We are also growing a special network with members of our Business Leaders Club at the C- level. We are known as a distinguished organization of “top level “conferences and events with recognized international participation, for example: the U.S. - Slovenia Business Bridge; the Official Visit of the 42nd U.S. President and Founder of the William J. Our long-term goal is to improve investment opportunities and the business environment in Slovenia so that conducting business will be easier for Slovenian, international, and U.S. companies, and that it leads to an increase in the standard of living of all Slovenian citizens. We are working towards building an incentive-rich business climate, our competitive position, international trade, cooperation in development and investments, and a transparent and ethical business environment.

We stand on four firm foundations

For its second straight year, the Sei training Program enabled 19top-level, highly motivatedstudents in their 2nd or higher year, from universities in Slovenia and in various study programs, an internship in selected Slovenian Amcham member companies.

The Program is a special seminar that encouragesstudents to proactively apply the knowledge theyacquired at their university to real business ideas(aspects), and to subsequently carry them out. This type of training efficiently connects universitystudies with the economy, and is already a well-established and accepted practice abroad. Wewould also like to provide quality and valuable working experiences to Slovenian students, and at the same time offer them an introduction to theunderstanding of business in the economy. Furthermore, often companies subsequently give the intern they cooperate with through SEI a concrete job offer, so the program also caters to the human resources potential for all employers seeking new, young staff.

Opening speech by Dr. Maja Makovec Brenčič, the Vice-Rector of the University of Ljubljana “We not only have to integrate the business note and the know-how acquired – but to open doors together, opening doors on a global level!”

“Entrepreneurship is certainly not the easiest, yet only by stepping out of our comfort zone can we achieve success. Therefore, if we expect only countries to finance entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs, that there should be no private risk, is neither logical, nor practical.”— mag. AjšA vodnik, Executive Director, AmCham Slovenia

“Technology investment is the most profitable investment with high added value, but only if connected with the economy and the market.”

— dr. jernej PikAlo, Minister of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia

“It is essential that Slovenia develops a vision in the field of innovation: it can become a global innovation center, which requires centralization of the system in the form of an innovation corridor or cluster. . .The government’s role is to be the main supporter, whereas the entrepreneurs are the main players. The government must decide on the direction of business incubators, which directly involve entrepreneurs. The state can finance companies so that they by themselves can commercialize the innovation«.

Dr. Marko Jaklič, COBIK and the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana, stressed the issues of the Slovenian climate in which many scientists and researchers are highly motivated, yet the environment itself does not motivate them.

“The issue is in a lot of small things that add up. The facilitating of researchers to have entrepreneurial spirit is not being encouraged enough. Small steps can be made with a strong will and clear purpose, not only with public funds.”

why did you decide to establish Amcham Slovenia?

When the number of US companies present in Slovenia reached a critical mass, we thought it would be great if they had a platform that would allow them to meet more often, to be better organized, and have the possibility to exchange information about the business environment. As an AmCham type of association seemed the most logical, the Ambassador hosted a dinner for the 10 largest U.S. companies in Slovenia at that time. I also visited AmCham Slovakia and AmCham Hungary to get acquainted with their operations. We presented the idea, and even at that time the companies communicated their high interest in moving forward with its formal establishment.

what were your expectations then and are you satisfied with the results today?

The expectations were to build an institution that would be a primary meeting place for all of the foreign investors coming and operating in Slovenia. As there were no similar organizations at that time, many members were coming from non-US companies as well.

Witnessing AmCham’s development convinced me that the primary mission was more than achieved. I give my compliments to the Board and the Director for their leadership and the excellence they have demonstrated during the last four years. This is the period when AmCham Slovenia really became an institution that sets the tone of FDI’s in Slovenia.

what are your wishes for the next era of Amcham Slovenia?

AmCham will need to define its role and mission in more detail to remain in a leadership role, because other countries have also formed their chambers. Cooperation with other countries that do not have Embassies in Slovenia, and having a more active role in promoting U.S. investments and critical thinking would be something I would expect. I also expect AmCham to remain active in humanitarian and community services.

Welcome to 15 successful years

why did you decide to establish Amcham Slovenia?

That was the time when the first shy investors with U.S. capital appeared and Barbara, Bojan, Dejan, Dick, Marjan, Marko, Nataša, Ludvik, Tjaša myself and others that didn’t deliberately forget, we represented them. From day one, we, were seen as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI companies). We tried to act publicly. We did not really fit in the existing structure of Slovenian Chamber of Commerce (GZS). We felt the need for an organized grouping of interests or simply to socialize.

The first real proposal for the forming of a U.S. investors association came from the commercial section of the Embassy of the United States in Ljubljana. One of the motives to support the incorporationof AmCham, at least my personal was, introduction of VAT.

Certainly, I did not start AmCham by myself, all above mentioned names are equally important when it comes to our initiation and I just made my portion of contribution to AmCham founding and for those that don’t know it, I made the AmCham Slovenia logo. Finally, it was a great honor for me being elected Charter President of AmCham Slovenia.

what were your expectations then and are you satisfied with the results today?

We became aware of the real value of our existence, when we realized that we got a suitable platform, where we were able to meet, greet, and speak up independently and without prejudice in the front of important and influential individuals and groups.

Moreover, we were not a part of existing local institutional forms and frames. These are not the only reasons that the AmCham network astounds with its influence, otherness, practicality, dimension, flexibility, surprising us beyond our expectations.

Through the initial years we went through all kind of experiences. Like every child, we were not immune to childhood diseases. Good always prevails, and I’m happy to see that AmCham has survived all these difficulties.

what are your wishes for the next era of Amcham Slovenia?

In my inaugural speech I quotedVictor Hugo: “Nothing is stronger thanan idea whose time has come.” Literarilysaid, Slovenia is a 2 million star hotelon the sunny side of the Alps, with a great sea water pool. Slovenia needs to fight against its chronic geographic, political, and economic invisibility, to fight against accepting false comparability, and oppose international (lobbying) passivity, just waiting for a coincidental investor to appear. It is hard to find a place on the globe with such a diverse quantity of natural resources, especially thermal and spring water, where natural beauties and gastronomy are so vivid. As a part of the contributing entities in Slovenia, AmCham shall take its portion of responsibility by actively reminding Slovenians about their strategic advantages.

“AsaproudAmChammemberfor14years,icansaythisorganization has had a great range of activities which are very important for any kind of Slovenian business organization, as well as its representatives. From my perspective it has given me a lot of knowledge and awareness about important topics in our society. Next to this I can fairly say that attendance at the AmCham breakfast offers a great chance to strengthen business ties and opens new possibilities for cooperation.”

2001

It is still hard for me to believe it has been 15 years since the founding of AmCham Slovenia. I am delighted that the chamber continues to flourish as a place where companies of all nationalities can: meet and share their experiences, host speakers from business and government, and develop activities such as seminars to further the education of all.

In the beginning it was hard to attract members to the mission of AmCham, as we were a competitor to the government-sponsored chamber and other smaller chambers. But we believed that if we were able to host guest speakers and promote open dialogue about matters of mutual interest, membership would grow. And thankfully, it did.

As I look back at some of the seminars sponsored, I am particularly proud of the anti-corruption seminar which was sponsored by AmCham in order to highlight a growing problem in Slovenia. This was early in the last decade, and as I visit Slovenia each year, I see now more than ever the need for transparency and honesty at every level of business and government. AmCham was actively involved in and promoting discussion about other raging debates at that time which included: the entry of Slovenia into the EU and the single currency, income tax regulations for individuals and companies, as well as intellectual property rights. I trust these debates and others continue actively today since all are among the most important for every economy’s continual consideration and refining efforts.

I am aware that the general European, and especially Slovenian, economic environments are extremely difficult for companies and workers, and that the solutions will not be fast or easy. I hope AmCham can play a role in the search for necessary actions through constructive criticism and open debate. While I miss being part of the debate, I do wish the leadership and members my most sincere good wishes and encouragement to work together for mutual benefit. Change starts with open communication and mutual understanding, which is a cornerstone of the AmCham mission. If I can help in any way from here, please feel free to contact me.

5AmCham’s, as well as my top priority during the early years was to attract as many new members as possible, and to improve its visibility, generally. We wanted and did our best to ensure its added value to our members, to make the membership worthwhile. The business environment was not friendly to investors, no matter where they came from (and that has not changed dramatically even today). Efforts to promote new policies, to eliminate poor policies, while improving existing policies were high on our agenda. AmCham should adopt a firm belief that it is essential for both the private, as well as public, sector to continually monitor its competitive position in the global economy. AmCham should identify itself as a role model for responsible corporate citizenship, and be recognized as one of the leading and influential associations in the country.

“inmycapacityasPresidentoftheboardofManagementofTelekomSlovenije and Chairman of Deloitte Slovenia I thoroughly enjoyed my2002-2006tenureasmemberof the Board of Governors of AmCham Slovenia, and my working relationship with then President of theboardofGovernors,Mr.richardA. The greatest added value for me and for my employers was the establishing of contacts with numerous U.S. business partners and institutions, as well as the first hands-on job acquaintance with best practices, the leadership style, and morals of the model U.S. businessman Richard was. Based onthatin2003TelekomSlovenijeadopted its first code of business ethics and culture that is still in use today.MaythefutureendeavorsofAmCham Slovenia be successful to the mutual benefit of the U.S. and Slovenia business communities.”

My service as U.S. Ambassador to Slovenia from 2001 to 2004 was one of the highpoints of my career. I still love the people and their incredibly beautiful country. Working together with people from all levels of the government, civil society, educational institutions, and the business sector, I left with a great feeling of satisfaction of have achieved much in advancing the interest of our two countries. Although the Chamber’s activities were considerably more modest than they are now, the Chamber played a key role in the work done jointly to increase business opportunities for our two countries. I continue to visit Slovenia because my love for it remains firm. In fact, I’ve visited Slovenia more than any other country in which I’ve previously served, and I’m welcomed back with open arms each time I stop by. I wish the Chamber every good wish on its 15th anniversary for continue success in efforts to bring our countries closer through business, trade, and commerce. Keep up the good work!

It was a pleasure to be the leader of AmCham, whose members were full of enthusiasm and optimism to work for Slovenian future economic development. Past endeavors, ongoing efforts, and a vision of the future reflect in the achievements of AmCham today. We can say that the scope of its activities has grown significantly, and most of all it has become an important organization in our society with a prominently held voice.

7I am honoured to have been a part of the AmCham family over the last ten years in Slovenia, where AmCham has managed to build a strong position in the Slovene market environment as one of the leading opinion makers. The team possesses a very high level of professionalism, and one can feel the positive energy in all areas of activities. AmCham is highly successful in connecting influential business people and political leaders at its events, and still manages to keep its political independence. It is oriented not only towards business, but also very active in other areas where it can contribute to society. We are united in our drive to build a dynamic and harmonious relationship with the Slovene market community by sharing our knowledge and encouraging cooperation at different levels in order to enhance social and professional environment.

It is a pleasure to cooperate with people where good team spirit, a proactive attitude, humanity, and professionalism are at home at AmCham Slovenia.

„It is important for young people to have the opportunity to compare their own ideas, and to think and share critical views with those of us who have already gained a good deal of experience. Accordingly, the AmCham Young Leaders Program is very successful because it enables young people to meet individuals from whom they can learn a lot, to listen to their good and bad experiences, and thus make their own decisions much more easily.

On the other hand, as a mentor, I as well acquire a lot and get insights into how young people think today, what their reality is, and where they will take our world. During discussions, I test the value of my own knowledge, as well as listen to new ideas and toconsiderthem.“

Four Generations,367 Young Professionals

The AmCham Young Professionals ProgramTM was introduced in 2010. In 2012 the program reached an appropriate level of individuality,

creativity, and recognizability and thus became legally eligible for copyright protection as the intellectual property of AmCham Slovenia and its team that developed it. The same also goes for the brand AmCham Young ProfessionalsTM itself.

The program is intended for, and free-of-charge to outstanding young people between the ages of 25 and 33 who are employed at the Members of AmCham Slovenia. This special program of workshops, training, lectures, and other benefits was specifically organized to help them further their careers. The program’s purpose is to form an intergenerational “network” that will add value to their future work.

The AmCham Young Professionals ProgramTM seeks candidates with leadership potential, ethical principles, a desire to work effectively, perseverance, and those who pursue personal development and an active approach to improving their own competencies. The aim of the program is the development of promising young professionals with leadership potential. The program’s emphasis is on the importance of role models, and also introduces a leadership mindset in the Slovenian business environment. The qualities we most look for are: responsibility, ambition, communicative skill, creativity, integrity, a passion for work, professionalism, social responsibility, empathy, principle-driven choices, a potential to motivate, and entrepreneurial vision. Five super finalists of the 3rd Generation were chosen in 2013, together with the AmCham Leadership and Talent Development Committee, and the title of the AmCham Young Professional Top Potential of the Year 2013 was awarded to Blaž Jakič, Zavarovalnica Triglav.

At the present we are continuing with the 4th Generation of AmCham Young Professionals ProgramTM into which 67 companies enrolled 104 participants. The 5th Generation of AmCham Young Professionals ProgramTM is planned for June 2014. All the Members may expect invitations for the enrollment of their young colleagues in March 2014.

q What do you consider to be the five major turning points in your life?

A Career-wise, the five most notable highlights in my life are: 1) Graduation from the University of Ljubljana; 2) Receiving a Master’s degree at the LSE in London; 3) Obtaining the opportunity to work in a dynamic and challenging environment at a private equity fund and on corporate advisory projects early in my career; 4) Getting the opportunity four years later to move to a more corporate-oriented business environment at Zavarovalnica Triglav that provides a set of different business challenges; and, 5) most recently, the award for AmCham Slovenia 2013 Top Potential.

q What is your opinion about the AmCham Young ProfessionalsTM program?

A The AmCham Young Professionals program is an excellent opportunity to meet new people and establish business connections with talented and ambitious individuals. At the same time it enables participants to gain knowledge and experience pertinent to the modern business environment in an interesting and interactive way at workshops and lectures.

q How would you define your generation?

A My generation in Slovenia faces a completely different set of challenges and opportunities compared to the previous generation or two. The world we live in is changing at a faster pace than ever. On one hand we are facing a decline in the social security that our parents were used to; but on the other hand, we are well-equipped with a knowledge of foreign languages and are more prepared to grasp the opportunity to prove ourselves beyond our borders in the environment of continuously increasing, cross-border mobility of goods, services, and people. I am confident that our generation is well educated, intelligent, open-minded, and prepared for the challenges of a modern, globalized world. A few years ago I would have said that we lack a bit of self-confidence and courage, but with the number of globally successful young Slovenian individuals in corporate or entrepreneurial roles, as well as in the field of culture and sport, I strongly believe that we can look up to those people and move Slovenia forward in terms of economic development and well-being.

q How do you see Slovenia, the EU, and the world? How is Slovenia positioned in the future?

A Slovenia is a small part of Europe and seemingly unimportant when we discuss it in global proportions. However, many small countries continue to show that size does not matter when it comes to the level of economic development and the standard of living that a country can achieve. Slovenia’s

geographic location is very favorable, we have a skilled and well-educated labor force, our educational system is good, and people, especially young people, are well aware of the global trends, challenges, and opportunities. It is a shame, however, that recently we lacked the ability to unite and find a consensus on some key economic and social questions that would put us back on the path of economic growth and progress. This, in my opinion, continues to be our main challenge in the times ahead.

EU membership is more beneficial to Slovenia than many are aware. Albeit a small part, we reap the benefits of the large system in the form of cross-border economic cooperation, which is crucial for the development of a small, open-market economy. Our membership in the Eurozone builds on that in providing additional stability, particularly in a time of global financial and economic turmoil. I therefore hope, that the EU, probably the most important global project ever in terms of its ability to facilitate peace and subsequent economic prosperity, will continue to serve its means for years to come. Slovenia can, with a few crucial decisions, quickly turn around its faith and regain the respect that it deserves in this eminent group of nations.

q What is the most entertaining thing that has happened to you?

A Thanks to my family and close friends, with whom I have spent so many happy and joyful moments, it would be impossible to point out the single, funnest thing that has happened to me thus far in my life. There have simply been so many, and I hope that I will experience many more in the years to come.

q When, how, why, and from whom have you learned the most in your life?

A I cannot point out only one person in my life, so I will narrow the selection down to two; my parents. They are not only the ones whom I have to thank for a wonderful childhood, but also for bringing me up in a way that taught me the importance of responsibility, open-mindness, compassion, and awareness of the fact that nothing in our lives can be taken for granted. All of this is the foundation for happiness in life and played a big role in my business career thus far as well.

q What are your most important future goals?

A In terms of career, my goal in the future is to have the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where my energy, knowledge, and experience enables me to contribute to common goals that I can identify with. And as far as my personal life is concerned, I can only wish for things to stay as they are for as long as possible.

reSPonSiBilityLeadership is based on different dimensions and one of them is also responsibility. Sometimes, short-term profits may be reached irresponsibly, but if you aim for long-term success, you must behave and act with integrity. It seems easy, but when you need to balance the interests of many different stakeholders of a company – shareholders, customers, local community and the broader society, the environment, legal requirements, and last but not least employees – being responsible becomes a true challenge.

With such a gift we can simply speak or we can use it to communicate. We can keep achievements, emotions, and knowledge for ourselves, or we can share them. For me communicativeness is the wish to maximize our ability to exchange our experiences, is constant research toward blending our own world with others, and is the magic bridge that seeks to eliminate obstacles between humans.

— MAriA AnSelMi, General Manager, Bisnode

AMBitionAmbition - a word with a double taste, sharply sweet and deeply bitter. As the tastes indicate, the result may be fantastically warm or unpleasantly cold. It shows a will to set and reach high goals within one’s mission. I’ve met several ambitious and successful people, and I was very often struck by their knowledge, understanding, warmth, work habits, and skills, and especially dedication to their mission. Several of them had a very challenging past with lots of difficult times which sharpened their abilities for understanding other peoples’ needs and fears and the ability to survive. On the other hand, one can meet people whose ambition is self-nourishing. Their career is full of dead bodies and usually it ends as it had lived.

— tone StrnAd, General Manager, Medis

creAtivityCreativity is the real cornerstone of everything. The whole world and we all exist because we were created.” So we must definitely support, foster, and enhance creativity. In my point of view we can only create on the basis of something that exists: so be curious, look around yourself, transform, and optimize the existing. Don’t be afraid to break the rules, this is where the very essence of creativity comes from. And listen to yourself, as intuition has great importance in being creative. Constantly ask yourself questions and take nothing for granted. Allow room for mistakes. In our business, insurance, over the years and the cycles, only those who were innovative have had success.wehavebeenheresince1831,innovatingconstantlyoverourhistory.

to Be PrinciPledIt is important to know what you personally believe in and value, and what your company‘s values are. These values need to be lived both personally and professionally, and it takes a really principled person to always make decisions according to these values. A principled leader has the confidence and strength of character to make tough, strategic decisions and counsels others through complex decisions. If you remain principled in your actions and true to your values you will be seen as a strong leader who is consistent in his actions and can become a role model for younger generations.

Slovenia Vodka — all you need is Slove.interview witheMil gASPAri

q What were the 5 key turning points in your life?

A - Having been born under the three lucky stars of Celje, Slovenia (Yugoslavia)- Visiting America in 1961- Studying in America- Developing a network of business and political associations- Having the chance to return my experience and knowledge to my homeland

q You live in the USA, but it seems you have a strong connection with Slovenia, as you named your vodka after the name of your homeland? What binds you to Slovenia?

A Slovenia is my heart and soul no matter how far I am from my homeland. My mission has always been and will continue to be to bring Slovenia beyond its borders. Through trade and business activities I have met many people, and have been able to bring many Americans to Slovenia and introduce them to my homeland.

q Two world famous names Misha Baryshnikov and Bill Murray are the ambassadors of Slovenia Vodka. How did you achieve this?

A Both Bill and Misha are a longtime personal friends of

Chef Peter X. Kelly, and both were already familiar with vodka. When Chef Kelly returned from Slovenia he told both of them of his unforgettable visit. Discussions and ideas about vodka developed, and after tasting it both were pleasantly surprised and decided to be a part of the project.

q You have as well connected with two Slovenian companies, Steklarna Hrastnik and Fructal, and have made a commitment

that Slovenia Vodka is bottled in the heart of Slovenia. What prompted this decision?

A The basis for the Slovenia Vodka project was and is to have everything produced in Slovenia. The development of the product and the packaging took time, but with persistence and a philosophy of “never give up” we were successful in bringing the product to the market. It is the cooperation of companies, along with many others, that has resulted in the success of the project.

q Your key tips for achieving breakthroughs:

A 1. The biggest risk is not to take a risk.

2. If it does not work, do not look back - you lose time, energy, and money, and you will cry alone. Take it as a lesson and move onward.

Outfit7 —Landscapes of fun

Yearbook 2013/14 ORIgINATED IN SLOVENIA | 71

q What were the 5 key turning points in your career

A - Meeting in high school and both studying Computer Science in the university

- Establishing Outfit7 in 2009

- Launching Talking Tom in June 2010

- Moving Outfit7 beyond an app start-up, and growing the business into a global entertainment company

- Achieving 1.3 billion downloads for our flagship family of apps, Talking Tom and Friends – which now generates 170 million monthly active users; garnered 750 million views on YouTube; and had a musical hit on YouTube and Vivo

q Why has the Talking Tom application become so successful?

A Talking Tom and Friends offer something completely different. Our apps center on fun and are fully-interactive, allowing users to engage in two-way conversations which they can then share on Facebook and YouTube. Our family-friendly apps have a strong emphasis on entertainment and allow for self-expression as the user becomes the creator of their own content. The functionality appeals to all ages and demographics and transcends language barriers – which has contributed to their global success.

q Many people have dreams and for some, their dreams come true. Why it is important to dream?

A It’s important to follow one’s life aspirations; having a dream enables you to explore options that are not limiting. It’s my belief that if you dare to try and you’re not perturbed by potential stumbling blocks, then your dream can easily become reality.

q You inevitably faced moments when something was not going according to plan. What have you learned from such events?

A It is natural to make mistakes, everyone does. What is important is what you learn from them. Approaching situations differently and learning from past failings will resolve things the next time round. If not, then you have not finished learning. In the early days we grew too quickly, which created opportunities for errors. Approaching things differently has enabled us to become stronger and grow further still.

q The Outfit7 creative team is still in Slovenia. Why have you chosen to remain there?

A We have creative offices in London, England; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Seoul, South Korea; Palo Alto, USA; and Limassol, Cyprus. We have invested heavily in our Slovenian talent, recognizing the value of their hard work and creativity. That said, we are equally dedicated to growing the headquarters in London, as well as our international offices – all of which are integral to the success of the business.

q Your key tips for a breakthrough, in terms of, individuals with good ideas, companies with good patents, and Slovenia’s great potential.

A The most important thing is that people believe in themselves and are not afraid to pursue their ideas. Slovenia is a small country and historically Slovenians are humble people. My advice would be to work hard, be creative, and think globally.

interview withMihA Mikek

q What were the 5 key turning points in your life?

A There were many more than just five, however the one that really stands out for me was the decision to sell a small family business in Slovenia and go to the US to get a master‘s degree.

q Tell us in TweetStyle – which among your products has taken over the world?

A AdCreator

q Where do you see your uniqueness within the global competition that has managed to convince the IT giants, and with which you have consequently become their partner?

A We were one of the first companies in the world to develop a platform for mobile display advertising on smartphones. When we started Celtra, with Miha and Maja Mikek and Matevž Klanjšek (founders), this market didn‘t exist. Today, we are one of the leading companies in a market that is valued over $10 billion globally and is still growing at an over 50% annual growth rate.

q What was the key to getting funded by US investors and getting millions of dollars in investment money?

A There’s no short and easy recipe for getting funded by venture capitalists. Key success factors are: team, product, market opportunity, proof of the ability to execute, traction in the market, etc. Fundraising is a process and usually takes a lot of time, specially for the “newcomers.” It is very important to be present in the market where you are trying to raise VC capital. The total amount of capital that we have

raised to date at Celtra is slightly over $10M.

q Your offices are on both sides of the ocean. What are the advantages of each of these business environments?

A We have eight offices, five in the US (Boston, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles), two in Europe (Ljubljana, London), and our newly opened office in Tokyo. Two thirds of our employees are based in the US.

The business environment in the US is much better in every aspect compared to the current environment in Slovenia. From business legislation, to ease of doing business, Slovenia has a ways to go to before it will become a friendly place for business.

q Your key tips for breakthrough

A - of individuals with good ideas

Always share your ideas to get as much feedback as possible. Negative feedback and non-believers shouldn‘t scare you off from pursuing your ideas. Make sure to filter, learn and refine, but never give up! Go for it!

- of companies with good patents

Execution is the best patent! 99% of patents are not worth much without great business execution.

- of Slovenia with its great potential

We need to reset our values and start putting our best talent to work.

The idea was to bring together a critical mass of polymer science and the polymer industry in Slovenia - to help Slovenian industry to increase competitiveness based on science and advanced technology.
