The sparsely populated OakdaleTownship, which was orga-nized in 1858, evolved into

one of Minnesota's fastest-growing cit-ies in the 1990s. Today it's a suburbthat prides itself for its adaptability.

Originally 36 square miles in the pio-neer days, Oakdale is now a third of

    that size.

It became an incorporated city in1974; however, its recorded historydates back to the late 1840s.

According to the 1875 census, themajority of Oakdale Township resi-dents came from far-flung places. Only42 percent were born in Minnesota.

European-American immigrantswere first attracted to Oakdale Town-ship for its rich prairie land with white

    burr and black oak savannahs.

During the early times, the farmers'most important crop was wheat. Oncewinter came, the harvest switched toice. This wintry "crop" was cut fromTanners Lake and stored for use dur-ing the summer to keep food cold.

Railroads played a significant role inthe development of Oakdale. The St.Paul and Stillwater Short Line Rail-

road and St. Paul and Taylors FallsRailroad tracks were constructed inthe early 1870s. Oakdale became oneof the stops and had its own station.

    "A warm, family feeling"

Modern-day Oakdale is a prosperoussuburb with a mix of well-maintained

residential neighborhoods, city parksand commercial districts. Interstate694 bisects the city, and has attractedindustry and retail businesses to its

major intersections at Highway 36,Highway 5, Tenth Street and Inter-state 94. When commercial propertiesare no longer viable, the city has takenan active role in encouraging redevel-opment.

Oakdale has a strong parks system,a Washington County branch library,

and is home to the Discovery Center, which offers an opportunity for kidsand adults to take in a day full of learn-ing and adventures in a natural parksetting.

Stop by and stay awhile in Oakdale, where residents and visitors alike find

a warm, family feeling with many rec-reational and shopping opportunities.

The transformation of Oakdale1858 - Oakdale Township was organized

1926 - The Village of Lake Elmo was the first area to establish its ownidentity

1951 - East Oakdale Township came into existence

1959 - Forty acres of East Oakdale Township split off and becameLandfall and 3.5 square miles became Northdale Township

1968 - Part of East Oakdale and all of Northdale rejoined Oakdaleonce again

    1974 - Oakdale officially became a city

Greetings from the Mayor of Lake Elmo

    About Lake Elmo

L ake Elmo is awelcoming com-munity, excitedabout its promising fu-ture and extremely proud

of its heritage. It's sprin-kled with lush naturepreserves, large tracts ofopen spaces and diverseneighborhoods, all while

being conveniently locat-ed within 10 miles of downtown St Paul.

Lake Elmo offers both convenience anda fresh, relaxing atmosphere. The cityconsists of 8,000 residents, 24 squaremiles, 17 city parks and many attractive

lakes. Additionally, within our borders is

the 3.5-square-mile Lake Elmo RegionalPark that offers its visitors any numberof recreational activities. We're proud to

be in school districts 834, 832 and 622as well.

Admittedly, we are somewhat of a laid-back community; however, we do getfired up a bit for our classic NormanRockwell-style Fourth of July parade andour Fall Festival, featuring a medley ofgarage bands from the area. With closeto 100 teams involved, our annual "Huffand Puff" softball tournament - the larg-est of its kind in the state - can get our

collective competitive streaks going a bitas well.

If out for a bite to eat, our historicdowntown offers choices from a nation-ally recognized, five-star restaurant, tocasual fare, to a simple-yet-classic neigh-

borhood pub. Perhaps you'll want to visit

the public library, take in a ballgame orget a haircut.

Clearly, Lake Elmo has that elusivedowntown charm that many cities strivefor. And with our downtown compre-

    hensive plans "finally finalized," our

downtown and its existing businessescan foresee new vitality coming to thearea.

Our southern border maintains a mixof users such as our Eagle Point Business

Park, Valley Cartage, Rasmussen College, among others. Presently, in spite of it

being highly coveted for its economicpotential, much of the area remains un-developed. However, long-range plansfor this "I-94 corridor area" have alsorecently been reworked, and this areais destined to be blanketed with qualityneighborhoods, retail choices, commer-cial areas and jobs centers.

I'd like to encourage your visit and ex-perience Lake Elmo for yourself. I am

confident you'll feel as I and so manyothers do that Lake Elmo is a wonderfulcommunity.

The brown thrush sings on every tree,

The cat-bird trills his gushing glee,And not less happy, love, are we

By the triplet elms of Elmo.

Wild roses bloom along the shore,With pinks and harebells covered o'er,

Their fragrance on the breeze they pourThat stirs the elms of Elmo."

These verses from the song,"The Elms of Elmo," by JohnW. Boxell, describe many of

Lake Elmo's great outdoor amenitiesback in the 1800s. Although it waswritten more than 100 years ago, mostof the song's lyrics still ring true today.

Lake Elmo has seen continual popu-lation growth, but its greatest spurin development may be in the yearsahead. From 2000 to 2005, the popula-tion grew by over 1,000 residents, and

today nearly 8,200 people call LakeElmo home. The city is planning forcontinued strong growth in the next

two decades, especially in the historicOld Village area.

Bass Lake Station was the home ofthe first post office in the township. This is the area now commonly re-ferred to as the Old Village. The St.Paul, Stillwater and Taylors Falls Rail-road passed through Lake Elmo, which

made it easy for tourists to reach the

    lake.

Railroad promoter and St. Paul busi-nessman A. B. Stickney purchased the

land between the railroad tracks and

the lake, where he built a 58-room ho-tel.

Lake Elmo, the town's largest lake, was originally called Bass Lake. It'swell known for its deep, clean waterand has always been a popular fishingspot.

In 1879, railroad entrepreneur Stick-ney renamed the lake and the village. He named it after St. Elmo Murray, acharacter in the romantic novel "St.Elmo," which his wife enjoyed.

In the years leading up to the 1900s,Lake Elmo saw steady growth with-

out becoming a boomtown. It enjoyedsuccess with its resort hotel and LakeElmo Residence Park, which was alongthe eastern side of the lake.

Strong growth continued as the years

went on. During the 1920s, StillwaterRoad was paved, which allowed thevillage to establish itself as a major ag-

    ricultural and dairy center.

The city continues to be known as arural area, but future commercial andresidential developments are in theworks. Although civic leaders expecta portion of Lake Elmo's agriculturalfields will give way to suburban homes, they anticipate that its small-town am-

    biance will remain.

Lake Elmo's abundance of pictur-esque lakes and outdoor recreationalopportunities will ensure that "TheElms of Elmo" continues to hold truefor current and future residents.

Should coming years to you and me,Bring thoughtful care, as it may be,

Yet still, in fancy, we shall seeThe three green elms of Elmo.

    Fast facts:

Lake Elmo split off from Oakdale Township in 1951

In 1972, the village of Lake Elmo and part of East Oakdale Townshipmerged together to become the city of Lake Elmo

Farmers came in large numbers to Lake Elmo - many were of Ger-man and Irish heritage

Lake Elmo Airport, which is located on the city's east border in Bay-town Township, has helped the city to remain a focal point in themetro area

The city of Oakdale - 'Friendly' to redevelopment

    In the News

Oakdale has been bustlingwith redevelopment proj-ects in recent months, and

city officials say they don't see themomentum slowing down any timesoon.

The tax-increment financing dis-tricts for the city's top redevelop-ment priorities -- Tartan Crossingand Tanners Lake -- were extended

by the Minnesota Legislature in 2013to help spur on economic develop-ment at the two sites.

The Tartan Crossing site, formerlyhome to Oakdale Mall, is virtuallyunrecognizable after vast site im-provements were made in 2012. Anddevelopers seem to be taking note.

The city recently secured its first

major development for the site, "TheWaters of Oakdale," a 92-unit senior

housing project opening in 2014.The $16 million facility will be locat-ed on roughly three acres of the Tar-tan Crossing property, located at thenorthwest corner of the intersectionof Tenth Street and Interstate 694.City officials say they're confidentthat Tartan Crossing will eventually

be a mixed-use center with multi-family housing, retail shops and of-fice space.

The city of Oakdale also recentlywelcomed internationally recog-nized Park Tool, a bicycle tool com-pany that relocated its headquartersto Oakdale. The new Park Tool head-quarters sits on roughly eight acresof land off of Hadley Avenue North,

just across from the city's northernfire station.

Other formerly vacant sites areabuzz with activity as well, includingthe abandoned Winner gas station atthe corner of state Highway 5 andHadley Avenue. The new developer,Kwik Trip, has demolished the oldstation to make way for a new con-venience store. Additionally, Caribou

Coffee is opening a new coffee shopon the northeast corner of Highways36 and 120, where a Kwik Stop gasstation sat empty for many years.

    Linda Baumeister/Review

The Oakdale City Council, city staff and other local representatives have worked diligently to lay the groundwork for development of the Tartan Crossing site.

    Lake Elmo's new library

    brought more than books,

    CDs and magazines to the

community - it has been binding the

    community together since it opened

    in the fall of 2012.

In addition to its collection of more

than 10,000 items, the Lake Elmo

    Public Library engages the commu-

    nity by providing gathering spaces

    for groups and educational pro-

grams for both adults and children.

    The library includes rooms desig-

nated for computer use, coffee and

    discussion, children's reading and

    activities and conference meetings.

    When the Washington County Li-

brary System closed its Lake Elmo

branch at the end of 2011, civic

leaders and residents chose to open

a municipal library. The new library

occupies a building that was origi-

nally built as a car dealership in the

1920s and later converted into of-

    fice space.
