DESCRIPTION

Join us for the 13th Annual Eastern Shore Senior Games. The games will begin on April 26 and continue through April 28, 2012. The Eastern Shore Senior Games are open to athletes age 50 and older. Residency in Maryland is not required.Participants compete for medals in the following ages groups: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89 and up!Seniors can choose from a venue of events that include aquatics, badminton, bowling, cycling, fitness testing, floor and foul shooting, golf, pickleball, pump and 5K run, table tennis, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

RegistrationParticipation in the Eastern Shore Senior Games is open to athletes 50 years of age or older. To register for the games, athletes must return a completed application and a signed liability release. New participants must include a copy of a valid driver’s license or Motor Vehicle Administration ID. All individual/team entries must be postmarked no later than midnight, March 9, 2012. Participation in some events is limited. Incomplete registrations will be returned. Gender and Age GroupsCompetition is conducted in men’s and women’s divisions in each of the following age groups: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95+. If participant numbers are insufficient, age groups may be combined for competition purposes. Medals will be awarded, however, within each division and age category. FOR ALL COMPETITIONS your age group is determined by your age on December 31, 2012.

Cancellation / Rain DatesGame officials reserve the right to cancel any event due to insufficient registration and/or to combine age groups if less than five people sign up in an age group. If an event is canceled, every effort will be made to contact all persons affected prior to the start of the games. In the event of inclement weather or unusual circumstances, game officials reserve the right to cancel or postpone events to a later time of day or another date.

Registration PolicyA confirmation postcard will be mailed to each registrant.

Refund PolicyOne-half of the registration fee and all of the additional fees will be refunded if registration is withdrawn in writing no later than April 13, 2012. No refunds will be honored after this date.

AwardsMedals are presented to the first, second and third place finishers in each age group for each event. Ties are broken by standards governing each individual and team competition. Awards are presented immediately following each event at the event site.

EquipmentParticipants are required to provide their own equipment for the events entered, except where specified in an event’s special instructions.

ParticipationThe Maryland Senior Olympics Commission requests that every individual consults his/her physician to help evaluate his/her physical condition and safe level of competition. To assist in this endeavor, the commission has rated the various events within the Eastern Shore Senior Games as high and medium risk. Participants may select and enter as many events as their schedule will allow. NOTE: ANY ATHLETE NOT REPORTING TO AN EVENT ON TIME MAY BE DISQUALIFIED. There is no switching of events on day of competition. Participating in an event not pre-registered for will result in automatic disqualification.

HIGH RISK PARTICIPATIONThese events require an extensive level of physical fitness and training. Do not engage in this category unless:1. you are already actively participating in an event of

this nature on a regular basis (at least three times a week for at least one year).

2. your doctor’s consent has been given if you have been diagnosed as having high blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory conditions or orthopedic disorders.

High risk events: all aquatic events, cycling, fitness, tennis (singles), all team sports, all track events: 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M, 1500M, 5K run, all race walks.

MEDIUM RISK PARTICIPATIONThese events require less extensive physical conditioning, but have some risk due to their highly competitive nature. Do not engage in an event of this caliber unless:1. you have been actively involved in a similar event for

the past six months;2. you have your doctor’s consent if you have been

diagnosed as having high blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory conditions or orthopedic disorders.

ALL NEW ATHLETES Must attach a copy of current driver’s license or Motor Vehicle Administration ID as proof of eligibility. All athletes must have this document with them at all times of the competition. Providing invalid information shall disqualify the athlete and/or team from the competition–completed or scheduled.

It is the responsibility of each award winner to pick up his/her award. Medals will not be mailed.

• Race Walk Format: The one mile precision walk is conducted entirely on the track.

• The precision walk is raced against an estimated time. Participant predicts time to walk one mile. No watches are allowed on the track in the precision walk.

Sport Rules: All track and field events are governed by standard rules recommended by USA Track and Field. For a copy of these rules write or call USA Track and Field, One RCA Dome, Indianapolis, IN 46225, 317-261-0500.

VOLLEYBALL, Maggs GymDate: Friday – Starting Time: Men - 9 a.m.

Saturday – Starting Time: Women - 9 a.m.Format: • A team’s roster is limited to eight players, with a maximum of six players forming an on-court team. • A team must have five players present to

start a game, otherwise the game is forfeited.

• Conduct of players and coaches, penalties, and tie-breakers is governed by standard rules of power volleyball and/or at the discretion of the officials.

• Athletes may play on only one team. • Team clothing should be of like design and color. • Game balls are provided. Team

members must provide all other equipment including practice balls.

• Tournament structure is determined by the number of teams registered.

• Non-playing captains and bench personnel are not included in the roster size but must register.

Sport Rules: The volleyball tournament will be governed by the U. S. Volleyball Association rules with the exceptions noted above. For a copy of these rules contact USVBA, 2595 E. Fountain Boulevard, Suite 1-2, Colorado Springs, CO 80910, 719-637-8300.

Medium risk events: basketball floor and foul shooting, golf, pickleball, table tennis, tennis (doubles) and all field events that include discus, high jump, running long jump, shot put, standing long jump and triple jump.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM COMPETITIONThe team volleyball competition is divided into five age groups: 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; and 70+. THE AGE DIVISION WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE YOUNGEST MEMBER OF THE TEAM. NO ROSTER SUBSTITUTIONS WILL BE PERMITTED AFTER THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE.

New Registration for VolleyballAll team members, non-playing coaches and bench personnel must be included as a participant in the team roster.Team captains must:1. Complete and sign the team roster form.2. Submit a check per team ($200).

Volleyball participants who intended to compete in additional events must submit a signed individual registration form with payment to the Salisbury University Foundation, Inc.

EVENT CHECK-IN& CENTRAL REGISTRATIONCentral registration will take place at the Maggs Physical Activity Center. Participants are provided general information, gratuity distribution, a variety of vendor displays and guest/participant relaxation. Participants must register one time at this location during the games.*• For all competitions, event check-in takes place with

the event coordinator 30 minutes prior to each event at the event location.

* Off-site registration takes place at the event location for golf (Deer Run Golf Course) and bowling (Cherokee Lanes).

• No partner substitution is permitted after registration deadline.

• Mixed doubles will begin following the completion of men’s and women’s doubles competition.

Sport Rules: All matches will conducted according to Pickleball, Inc. For a copy of rules see www.pickleball.com.

Balls are provided. • Competition is conducted in singles,

TRACK & FIELD, SU TrackDate: Friday – Starting Time: 12:30 p.m.Format: • The order of competition is determined by

the field judge. • Competition by age group is combined

when necessary. • The wearing of all-weather spikes is

optional, but may not exceed 1/4 inch. • Field events are based on three attempts,

open pit format, events run concurrently. • High jump will be based on three misses at

highest point. • All track events are by time trials. • Start-up blocks are available for

competitors in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races. Athletes should not plan to use start-up blocks without prior training. Race officials have the right to determine an athlete’s capability for safe block use.

FLOOR AND FOUL SHOOTING, Maggs GymDate: Friday – Starting Time: 3:30 p.m.Format: • Participants may enter either one or

both competitions. Specify on registration form.

• Floor Shot: The best score out of 20 points made for shooting seven shots from designated locations on the floor.

• Foul Shot: Most points made after shooting 15 foul shots—one point for a single shot made and two points for each consecutive shot made.

Ties will be shot-off immediately following the completion of the regular competition. Participation in shoot-off is required for an award.

FITNESS ASSESSMENT, Maggs 206Date: Friday – Starting Time: 3:30 p.m.Format: • Participants will be tested on their

fitness level across the five components of fitness: cardiorespiratory endurance, maximum strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition.

• All fitness test scores will be age adjusted using national norms for the five components, that include

• Cardiorespiratory Endurance- Rockport 1-mile walk test

• Maximum Strength - Hand grip dynamometer

• Muscular Endurance - Push-ups in 1 minute

• Flexibility - Sit and reach • Body Composition - Bioelectrical

Impedance Analysis handheld device • Medals will be awarded by the following

classifications: • Gold - Above average in all five fitness

components • Silver - Above average in four of five

four events. • Any swimmer using improper methods

to gain an advantage over his/her competition is disqualified.

• If special accommodations are needed to enter and exit the pool, please indicate on the registration form.

singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Competition is based on scratch scores. No handicap.

• Each competitor will bowl a three-game set preceded by a warm-up.

• All competitors must prepay a lane fee of $5 per event with submission of the registration form.

• For doubles competition the age division will be determined by the younger age of the two players.

• Both names must appear on both forms and should be submitted together whenever possible.

• No partner substitution will be permitted after the registration deadline.

• Participants must provide own shoes and ball or RENT from Cherokee Lanes.

Sport Rules: The bowling tournaments will be governed by the American Bowling Congress rules. For a copy of these rules, please write or call American Bowling Congress, 5301 South 76th Street, Greendale, WI 53129, 414-421-9000.

CYCLING, Maggs Gym(Date: Saturday – Starting Time: 1 p.m.)Format: • Cyclists must provide their own bicycles in safe working order. • Cyclists are limited to two events. • Helmets are mandatory (ANSI or Snell approved with sticker affixed). • Starting times are random at intervals of one minute or less. • No allowances are made for mishaps, mechanical or otherwise. • If a rider appears late for a starting time, the start will only be allowed if it does not interfere with other riders starting on schedule. In the case of a late start, the original starting time is used in computing the results

• Floor Shot: The best score out of 20 points made for shooting seven shots from designated locations on the floor.

• Foul Shot: Most points made after shooting 15 foul shots—one point for a single shot made and two points for each consecutive shot made.

Ties will be shot-off immediately following the completion of the regular competition. Participation in shoot-off is required for an award.

TRACK & FIELD, SU TrackDate: Friday – Starting Time: 12:30 p.m.Format: • The order of competition is determined by

the field judge. • Competition by age group is combined

when necessary. • The wearing of all-weather spikes is

optional, but may not exceed 1/4 inch. • Field events are based on three attempts,

open pit format, events run concurrently. • High jump will be based on three misses at

highest point. • All track events are by time trials. • Start-up blocks are available for

competitors in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races. Athletes should not plan to use start-up blocks without prior training. Race officials have the right to determine an athlete’s capability for safe block use.

• The precision walk is raced against an estimated time. Participant predicts time to walk one mile. No watches are allowed on the track in the precision walk.

VOLLEYBALL, Maggs GymDate: Friday – Starting Time: Men - 9 a.m.

Saturday – Starting Time: Women - 9 a.m.Format: • A team’s roster is limited to eight players, with a maximum of six players forming an on-court team. • A team must have five players present to

start a game, otherwise the game is forfeited.

• Conduct of players and coaches, penalties, and tie-breakers is governed by standard rules of power volleyball and/or at the discretion of the officials.

• Athletes may play on only one team. • Team clothing should be of like design and color. • Game balls are provided. Team

members must provide all other equipment including practice balls.

• Tournament structure is determined by the number of teams registered.

• Non-playing captains and bench personnel are not included in the roster size but must register.

Sport Rules: The volleyball tournament will be governed by the U. S. Volleyball Association rules with the exceptions noted above. For a copy of these rules contact USVBA, 2595 E. Fountain Boulevard, Suite 1-2, Colorado Springs, CO 80910, 719-637-8300.

Medium risk events: basketball floor and foul shooting, golf, pickleball, table tennis, tennis (doubles) and all field events that include discus, high jump, running long jump, shot put, standing long jump and triple jump.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM COMPETITIONThe team volleyball competition is divided into five age groups: 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; and 70+. THE AGE DIVISION WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE YOUNGEST MEMBER OF THE TEAM. NO ROSTER SUBSTITUTIONS WILL BE PERMITTED AFTER THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE.

New Registration for VolleyballAll team members, non-playing coaches and bench personnel must be included as a participant in the team roster.Team captains must:1. Complete and sign the team roster form.2. Submit a check per team ($200).

Volleyball participants who intended to compete in additional events must submit a signed individual registration form with payment to the Salisbury University Foundation, Inc.

EVENT CHECK-IN& CENTRAL REGISTRATIONCentral registration will take place at the Maggs Physical Activity Center. Participants are provided general information, gratuity distribution, a variety of vendor displays and guest/participant relaxation. Participants must register one time at this location during the games.*• For all competitions, event check-in takes place with

the event coordinator 30 minutes prior to each event at the event location.

* Off-site registration takes place at the event location for golf (Deer Run Golf Course) and bowling (Cherokee Lanes).

Gender and Age GroupsCompetition is conducted in men’s and women’s divisions in each of the following age groups: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95+. If participant numbers are insufficient, age groups may be combined for competition purposes. Medals will be awarded, however, within each division and age category. FOR ALL COMPETITIONS your age group is determined by your age on December 31, 2012.

Cancellation / Rain DatesGame officials reserve the right to cancel any event due to insufficient registration and/or to combine age groups if less than five people sign up in an age group. If an event is canceled, every effort will be made to contact all persons affected prior to the start of the games. In the event of inclement weather or unusual circumstances, game officials reserve the right to cancel or postpone events to a later time of day or another date.

Registration PolicyA confirmation postcard will be mailed to each registrant.

Refund PolicyOne-half of the registration fee and all of the additional fees will be refunded if registration is withdrawn in writing no later than April 13, 2012. No refunds will be honored after this date.

AwardsMedals are presented to the first, second and third place finishers in each age group for each event. Ties are broken by standards governing each individual and team competition. Awards are presented immediately following each event at the event site.

EquipmentParticipants are required to provide their own equipment for the events entered, except where specified in an event’s special instructions.

ParticipationThe Maryland Senior Olympics Commission requests that every individual consults his/her physician to help evaluate his/her physical condition and safe level of competition. To assist in this endeavor, the commission has rated the various events within the Eastern Shore Senior Games as high and medium risk. Participants may select and enter as many events as their schedule will allow. NOTE: ANY ATHLETE NOT REPORTING TO AN EVENT ON TIME MAY BE DISQUALIFIED. There is no switching of events on day of competition. Participating in an event not pre-registered for will result in automatic disqualification.

HIGH RISK PARTICIPATIONThese events require an extensive level of physical fitness and training. Do not engage in this category unless:1. you are already actively participating in an event of

this nature on a regular basis (at least three times a week for at least one year).

2. your doctor’s consent has been given if you have been diagnosed as having high blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory conditions or orthopedic disorders.

High risk events: all aquatic events, cycling, fitness, tennis (singles), all team sports, all track events: 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M, 1500M, 5K run, all race walks.

MEDIUM RISK PARTICIPATIONThese events require less extensive physical conditioning, but have some risk due to their highly competitive nature. Do not engage in an event of this caliber unless:1. you have been actively involved in a similar event for

the past six months;2. you have your doctor’s consent if you have been

diagnosed as having high blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory conditions or orthopedic disorders.

ALL NEW ATHLETES Must attach a copy of current driver’s license or Motor Vehicle Administration ID as proof of eligibility. All athletes must have this document with them at all times of the competition. Providing invalid information shall disqualify the athlete and/or team from the competition–completed or scheduled.

It is the responsibility of each award winner to pick up his/her award. Medals will not be mailed.
