Out and About at the 2007 Florida Senior Games State Championships The 2007 Florida Senior Games State Championships came to a close on Sun-day, December 9 in Lee County and the City of Cape Coral with a total of 1,656 athletes, age 50 and over, competing in 24 sports and events over nine days. Sport by Sport Reports Basketball The Polk Players and Clearwater Aces went through the day undefeated at the 3-on-3 Basketball competition at the Estero Community Center, each winning three games. The Polk Players won the Men’s 50-54 age group defeating the Lee Hoopsters 74-62 in the champi-onship game. The Clearwater Aces defeated the Charlotte Lime 92-40 in the 60-64 age group championship game. The 60-64 Clearwater Aces have put together one of the most formidable inside and outside combo in 3-on-3 Basketball with Harry Carothers and George Tinsley. Carothers is a three-point shooting expert and annually compiles the highest point total in the Florida Senior Games State Championships Timed Field Goal Shooting competition by camping out beyond the three point line and connecting on five-point shots. He was described during competition a few years ago as “being able to score at will.” Tinsley, a 6 foot, 5 inch, Collegiate standout at Kentucky Wesleyan in the late 1960s, and in the ABA at for-ward, made the move to the Aces from the Polk Players, a 50-54 team. With the move, Tinsley will no longer have to face players almost 10 years younger than him. Basketball Shooting In the most hotly contested event of the Florida Senior Games State Championships Basketball Shooting com-petition, Carl Wambold, of Fort Myers, had to hit 44 of 45 free throws to win the gold medal in the 65-69 age group in Free Throw Shooting.

At the end of regulation shooting, where competitors shoot three rounds of 10 free throws each, Wambold was tied with Peter Smith, of The Villages and Jay Whel-chel, of Bradenton. Each hit 29 of 30 free throws. In the tiebreaker round, each of the competitors shot rounds of five shots. They all hit five in the first round. Whelchel was eliminated in the second round, missing two of the five. In the third round, Smith missed the second of his five shot turn. Wam-bold hit all five of his shots to claim the gold medal. Harry Carothers, of Pinellas Park, tallied the highest point total of the day in the Timed Field Goal shooting with 119 points in three rounds of 60 seconds each. Ca-rothers hit 23 shots from three point range, worth five points each, to account for 115 of his 119 total. Carothers, the 2004 Florida Senior Games State Champion-ships Male Athlete of the Year, also won gold medals in the free throw shooting and spot field goal shooting competitions in the 60-64 age group. He has won a timed field goal gold medal for each of the last nine years dating back to 1999.

Among the women’s basketball shooters, Claudette Braswell, of Lake Wales, won three gold medals in the 70-74 age group and had the highest scores of the day with 23 of 30 points in free throw shooting, 12 of 15 points in spot field goal shooting and 111 points in timed field goal shooting. Bowling Robert Nash & Stanley Corwin, of Boynton Beach, repeated as men’s doubles bowling champions in the 75-79 age group winning the gold medal in a roll off tiebreaker against Robert Davis and Charles Nascimentto, also of Boynton Beach. Both teams finished with a three game score of 991, but Nash and Corwin rolled 376 in the roll off while Davis and Nascimentto had a 333. In Women’s Singles Bowling, Lucy Sandelin, of Tampa, broke the 50-54 age group record with a three-game score of 641. She topped the record set in 2006, by Christine Srock, by 45 pins. Rudy Diaz, of Cape Coral, served as the Bocce Sport Director for the 2007 Games and has been deemed as the “Pope of Bocce,” by an official of Bocce International of Chicago. Diaz, who moved to Cape Coral 13 years ago from Connecticut, takes his moniker seriously with business cards claiming himself as such and an email address staking his claim as well. Color adorned in his Pope of Bocce attired, on the day of women’s competi-tion, Diaz gladly posed for photos with any and all players and spectators who asked. Diaz’s wife, Shirley, won a bronze medal in the women’s competition as a member of the Bocce Babes.

Senior Games swimmer and instructor For the children who learned to swim in St. Joseph, Missouri between 1955 and 1995, there’s a good chance they took a lesson or two from 88-year old Suzy Nothhouse, of Estero. Nothhouse, was a four-

time gold medalist in the 2007 Games and oldest competitor at the Fort Myers Aquatic Center during competition. During her days in St. Joseph, located in the northwest part of Missouri, Nothhouse was a school teacher who also gave swimming lessons to chil-dren and adults. She began working at city pools, but once she and her family moved into a house with a pool, she gave lessons in her backyard. At the 2007 Games, Nothhouse won gold medals in the 50 yard freestyle and 50 yard backstroke.

Los Angeles Dodgers new coaching staff Making a visit to the Florida Senior Games State Championships softball competition at Northwest Soft-ball Complex in Cape Coral was newly appointed Los Angeles Dodgers bench coach and Fort Myers resident, Bob Shaefer. Shaefer, was recently named to the position by current manager, Joe Torre and will join Yankees legend Don Mattingly on the Dodg-ers staff. While out to talk baseball with the women’s softball play-ers during the first week of competition, the coaching staff of the AIG Golden Gals joked with Shaefer that posing for the new Dodg-ers coaching staff photo. While a baseball lifer, with many coaching stops since the 1960s, Shaefer and Torre’s paths have never really crossed until now. “We’re both a couple of old school baseball guys who think and feel the same way about the game,” he said. Keeping a watchful eye on the Lanes En route to winning a gold medal in the 85-89 men’s singles bowling competition, Kenneth Broadhurst would amble back behind the ring of chairs surrounding lanes 19 and 20 of Pin Street @ Fort Myers to make sure his score was being properly recorded by his wife of 66 years, Jeanne. On one occasion, Kenneth thought Jeanne might have been focused too much on carrying on a conver-sation rather than recording the score. To show Kenneth that she was a master of multitasking at the bowling alley, Jeanne held up her score sheet to prove while she may have been talking, her eye was

also trained on the lane. The Broadhurst’s were a mixed doubles partnership until 2004 when Jeanne was involved in an automobile accident. But that hasn’t kept her away from the lanes. She charts each of Kenneth’s rolls. “We bowled together for 59 years,” said Jeanne. “Before the accident, I had a 149 average. Ken keeps about a 170 aver-age.”

The pair could be compared to Eva Gabor and Eddie Albert in the old Green Acres tv show, having lived in Apopka for the last 23 years. “He’s a country boy and I’m a city girl,” Jeanne said. “I was born and raised in the Bronx, New York.” Besides bowling to keep them busy, the Broadhurst’s have five children, 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. That’s quite a few birthday cards to send out while not recording strikes and spares. Watching Pickleball Grow When the Florida Senior Games State Championships presented Pickleball at the 2003 Games in The Villages for the first time, the first response when telling others about the sport was a chuckle. Then came the questions about the game. Five years later, there are still chuckles and there are still questions. But there is one thing for sure, the sport has grown from a curiosity into the mainstream. While the State Championships were held at The Villages, participa-tion levels hovered around 300 due to the popularity of the game in the Central Florida community. The first year the Games were held in Lee County and the City of Cape Coral, the number of competitors dipped to just over 60. But the numbers are back on the rise and 90 pickleball players took the court this year. The number of Florida local senior games competitions now offering Pickleball to their roster of sports is at 11 for 2008 and a larger variety of hometowns can now be found after competitors names in the re-sults. “Last year when I played Pickleball at the Tampa Bay Senior Games in Sun City Center there were over 120 players,” said gold medalist Bill Freeman, of The Villages. “In past years there were about 25 or so.” The game has expanded from the Pacific Northwest where a dog named Pickles inspired the Game to The Villages and other Florida communities, Arizona, California and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. “My nephew in Ohio has even been playing Pickleball in his high school PE classes,” said Freeman. “He even thinks he’s pretty good and then he comes to visit us at The Villages. He leaves a bit humbled but a better player.” Checking in with Roger Gentilhomme Just when you think you know everything about the 98-year old Florida Senior Games State Champion-ships Male Athlete of the Year, he shares more information with you that just makes you shake your head in amazement.

As if bowling, playing tennis and shuffleboard and lighting the Ceremonial Torch at the Celebration of Athletes isn’t enough during the week of competition in Lee County and the City of Cape Coral, he is apparently reading up on religions of the world to see what’s causing all of the strife in the Middle East. He claimed after his match against Tony Coker, a 90-year old from Fort Myers, he was a bit off his game because his legs were hurting. “I was out dancing last Friday night.”

His son Claude, nodded in agreement. “He’s a single man who likes to dance. He’s in high demand,” he said. Besides dancing and listening to music Roger plays as well. “I had a band back in the 30s,” he said. “Roger’s Raiders, or something like that. It was a five piece band and we played at club dances. I played the piano and still do.” Why not run? Over the years of watching Senior Games competitions, Race Walk has always been a curiosity. One foot has to be on the ground, knees must be bent a certain way and shorts must be worn so judges can carefully follow the technique of the race walkers. Then there’s the hip swinging and arm pumping. It’s a sight. Watching the leaders in the men’s and women’s 1500 meter race walk at South Fort Myers High School track, Jim Corbeil, of Winter Haven and Donna Graham, of Lowell, OH, they seemed to be gliding along the track. Very smooth and precise. But the question still stands, “Why not just run?” According the Senior Games athlete extraordinaire, Dean Davis, race walking is harder than running. “It’s because of all the technique involved,” he said. “In race walking, your hips have to move the right way and your arms have to be moving the right way. Different muscles are being used but the cardio is no different. I’m used up when I’m done with a race.” Davis’ claim of race walking being harder proved correct. The multi-sport athlete, who competed in swimming, the cycling time trials and road race and other track & field events, was disqualified in the 1500 meter race walk by the eagle eye judges for improper technique. Grandchildren compete in Florida Senior Games State Championships One of the final events of the 2007 Florida Senior Games State Championships was the Grandparent/Grandchild relay at the Track & Field meet on Sunday. Even though the turnout was sparse, the smiles on the faces of grandparents and their grandchildren were wide and bright. In the relay, the grandchild runs 100 meters down the track to their grandparent. Once they finish the 100 meters, the grand-parent runs back down the track. Everyone wins in this event. Norm Taylor, a track & field medalist in the 75-79 age group from Naples, ran with his 10-year old grandson, David, a fifth grader from Cape Coral. When Norm saw the event listed he asked David if he would run with him. “I was real excited when he asked if I wanted to do it and said yes right away,” said David. That brought a big smile to granddad Norm’s face. Taylor ran track in high school and in college at Ball State University in 1951 and 1952. David played on his Cantebury School soccer team this fall made sure to tell everyone around he ran faster than his grandfather today. Norm proudly nodded in agreement.

If he can walk, he’ll keep competing When a basketball game is in progress, there are many important decisions that officials have to make in a split-second. These decisions could literally change sports history forever. Al Murray has been mak-ing these decisions for over 52 years. “I officiated many college games throughout the years,” He said. “Mostly Ivy League and the Mid-American Conference. I did my fair share of Princeton and Seton Hall games” After 52 years, Murray has seen his fair share of games. His personal favorite was all the way back in 1976 between two powerhouses at the time. “The opening night of Rutgers vs. Purdue (ranked 5th at the time) was my favorite game I have ever officiated,” He said. “This was the first game of Rutgers amazing 31-game win streak that season.” The Scar-let Knights advanced to their only Final Four appearance that season. Murray no longer officiates the games but instead officiates the refs, serving as an observer for various leagues and conferences. “I tell them what they are doing right and also how they can improve their calls,” He said. “I truly got a lot out of the game, I wanted to give something back.” The officiating has given Murray a passionate love the game. He participates now in Basketball Shooting events. At the 2007 Florida State Senior Games State Championships he earned a gold, silver and bronze medal in the three different shooting events offered. His gold medal came in spot field goal shooting. “As long as I can walk, I’ll keep competing.” He said. “It is marvelous to see people older than me partici-pate, I thought I would be the oldest one.” Aside from Basketball, the 78-year-old Murray plays for his hometown softball team. “Our team (Central for Sight-Venice) has won 20 national titles since I joined,” He said. “There are guys on the team that really understand and know how to play the game.” With Murray’s inspirational mentality, you can count on seeing him in the game for a long time. Bob Farnswoth-Horseshoes “I like the people” Horseshoes is a game based on strategy and accuracy of your pitch, but to some folks like Bob Farns-worth, it is more than just ringers and stakes. “Of course I like the competition, but for the most part I really like the people that play,” He said. “The game is truly full of ladies and gentleman.” Farnsworth has been pitching horseshoes for over ten years and is a proud member of the National Horseshoe Pitching Association (NHPA) for over five years. “When I’m in Florida I go to the all the sanctioned tournaments around the state,” he said. “I just love playing.” Farnsworth resides in Punta Gorda six months out of the year and spends the other half in his home

state of Vermont. Farnsworth usually plays Horseshoes with friends during his time in Florida. You would think a man that is this dedicated to horseshoes would have goals for the sport. “I have no goals,” He said. “I think it is a fun game where you get to meet some great people.” Overall though, Farnsworth has accomplished many goals. Two years ago he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. “Doctors said I had cancer in my pancreas and told me I had two months to live,” He said. “They told me I could have a Whipple operation but the chance for survival was not good.” “The operation was a success and I have been living great for two years now,” He said. “I’m blessed to still be alive and pitching.” Farnsworth even had some wisdom that helped him throughout his ordeal, “Remember to never give up and always have a positive outlook.” Memorable quotes from the 2007 Florida Senior Games State Championships “The time trial races are all about who can endure the most pain.” Cycling sport director Zahid Buttar, addressing athletes prior to competition “I’ve got arrows older than you.” Archery gold medalist Ralph Galatz, of Fort Myers, upon hearing the age of an over 40 spectator at the Kelly Road Soccer Complex. “I come to realize how lucky I am. A lot of people, the children of elderly parents, are busy spending their time caring for them when they’re ill and doing very onerous things. Here I am, I tell people it’s like managing an athlete, a million dollar teenage athlete, all the time. So between my brother and I we really share it and revel in it.” Calla Jean Shafer-Adams, daughter of the Games oldest competitor, Roger Gentilhomme, talking to Fort Myers News-Press reporter Glenn Miller. FSF recognizes Florida Senior Games State Championships sponsors The Florida Sports Foundation extends its thanks to Lee County and the City of Cape Coral, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Performance Health, Inc., makers of BioFreeze, and the Florida Chiropractic Association for their support of the Florida Senior Games State Championships.
