Top 10 of the 20th Highlights from the 20th Anniversary Florida Senior Games State Championships The 2011 Florida International Senior Games & State Championships featured nine days of competition with 1,843 senior athletes, age 50 and over, competing in 22 sports, in Polk County. The 20th Anniversary Games were the first of a two-year run in Lakeland and the surrounding areas in Central Florida. The Games began on Saturday, December 3 with a record-setting Archery score and closed on Sunday, December 11 with two record-setting swimmers adding their names to more categories in the Florida Senior Games State Championships Record Book. Following are what could be considered the Top 10 Moments of the 20th Anniversary Games. Certainly each of the 1,843 athletes in competition over the nine days should consider their performances to be in the Top 10. Here’s a start. Games Newcomer Shoots All-Time Best Archery Score If first impressions are lasting, James Harden, of Davie, will be a legend for years to come since he shot the all-time best Florida Senior Games State Championships Archery score in the Compound & Release event, collecting 891 points of a possible 900.

Harden hit 27 of 30 inside the gold 10 ring of the target, on each of his three rounds, according to Sport Director Tim Austin. His three rounds were shot from distances of 40, 50 and 60 yards. Of the 90 arrows shot, 81 hit within the inside gold ring, for 10 points, while the nine remaining arrows, hit inside the outer gold ring, for nine points. On the 48 inch target (four feet in diameter), the full outer gold ring measures 12.2 centimeters (4.8 inches) across. The inner X-ring measures 6.1 centimeters in across (just under 2 ½ inches).

“I’ve only seen two scores higher than that in Senior Games competitions,” said Austin. “Those were both at the National Senior Games.” Competing in his first Florida Senior Games State Championships, Harden topped the previous all-time high score, an 881, shot by Frank Gandy, of Bartow, in 2006, in the Men’s 70-74 Compound & Release event. Harden has competed in the last two Sunshine State Games Archery Compound & Release events, shooting an 865 in 2010 and 875 in 2011. Setting ‘Em up and Knocking ‘Em Down at Senior Games Bowling

From 1992 to 2006, no bowler achieved perfection in the Florida Senior Games State Championships. Since Jerry Brunette, of Naples, broke the ice in 2006, two others have followed in his footsteps, in the last two years. Lawrence Draeger, of Pensacola (pictured in photo on left with State Representative Kelli Stargel and partner Dave Artzner), rolled 12 consecutive strikes in Game Two of his gold medal winning performance in the 55-59 Men’s Doubles competition, along with

Dave Artzner, of Cocoa Beach, to win the gold medal. His three-game score of 673 included a game one score of 173 and a 200 in game three. Artzner had a three-game total of 663 for a combined 1336, to win the gold medal by 56 pins. Richard Merrill, of Lady Lake, achieved perfection at the 2010 State Championships. Also making their mark on the Florida Senior Games doubles scene, Carol and Gerald Teel, of The Villages posted the highest score in the 20-year history of the Florida Senior Games with a 1495 in the Mixed Doubles competition. In three games, Carol rolled a score of 780 while Gerald had 715 to set a new mark in the 55-59 age group. The duo beat the previous all-time Mixed Doubles high score, set by Mary & Bob Chamberlain, of The Villages, in 2004, by more than 150 pins. Their score also topped the all-time high Men’s Doubles Score, of 1453, set by James Hoppe & Samuel Anzalone, of The Villages in 2008. Mike Campbell Torches the Nets at 3-on-3 Basketball Veteran Senior Games Basketball player Mike Campbell (in middle of photo to left of player with the ball) has been in some big games as a member of the Clearwater Aces team, winning a silver medal in the last two National Senior Games. However, it would be safe to say he hasn’t had a three game stretch like he did at the 2011 State Championships. In a gold-medal winning performance for the Village Brew 65-69 age group team, Campbell averaged 39.7 points in three games, tallying 35, 36 and 48 in two Village Brew wins and a loss. His 48 point output came in a shootout with Allstate/Leesburg, from the 60-64 age group, a 71-58 Allstate/Leesburg victory. But the story of the game was the shootout going on between Campbell and Larry Grose, of Allstate/Leesburg. Grose, who won medals in the Basketball Shooting competition Thursday, led Allstate with 41 points while Campbell scored 48 for the Village Brew. Talk about two guys with a hot hand. Campbell and Grose combined for 89 of the 129 points scored.

30-for-30 Basketball Shooting performance by Peter smith Besides at the Bowling alley, perfection was achieved at the Simpson Park Community Center and the Basketball Shooting competition as Peter Smith, of The Villages, (pictured at left with Sport Director Richard Blalock) hit all 30 of his Free Throws. Smith perfect performance was only the third 30 for 30 in the history of the Florida Senior Games State Championships. Previously achieving the feat were Dennis McDonald, of Palm Harbor in 2005, and Andy McGuffin, of Umatilla in 2001. Smith has won the 70-74 age group gold medal for the last two years and hit 29 of 30 free throws in last year’s Games.

Christine Frier Rides Mentor’s Bike to Record-Setting Performances While Tallahassee’s Christine Frier may have been competing in her first Florida Senior Games State Championships, on December 10 and 11 in Polk County, she was carrying with her the spirit of a Senior Athlete of days gone by. On successive days in December, Frier rode a Cervelo P3 Time Trial bike that once belonged to Vanessa “Van” Hilliard, a former Florida Senior Games athlete who passed away in March, to gold-medal winning and record-breaking times. “Vanessa got me started cycling in 1984 and taught me how to train and race,” Frier said. “It’s something I’ve stayed with for almost 30 years and now it’s a lifestyle. She was a mentor and a good friend. ” Hilliard, a St. Petersburg resident, competed in the Florida Senior Games State Championships from 1997 to 2002 and holds javelin, shot put, discus and hammer throw age group records in the 55-59 and 60-64 age group. She holds three national records in the hammer throw and discus. In 2001, USA Track and Field inducted her into its Masters Hall of Fame. On the bike, she, at one time won 19 straight bicycle races, according to the St. Petersburg Bicycle Club. Not a bad resume for Christine Frier’s mentor, who encouraged her cycling efforts. Frier’s mentor was no doubt smiling down on her as she set records in the 55-59 age group with a time of 8:07.426 in the 5K Time Trials and 16:41.513 in the 10K Time Trials. Her time in the 5K was 20 seconds faster than the previous best and her 10K time beat the previous record by 42 seconds. The next day she jumped back on the bike, this time one built by her husband, and rode the 20K Road Race in 32:58.568. All totaled, in three gold medal winning races, she rode more than 21 miles in less than an hour. Jonathan Bortner’s Marathon Day on the Tennis Court It took almost six hours at the Beerman Family Tennis Center, but Valrico’s Jonathan Bortner won two matches to claim the gold medal in the Men’s Singles 65-69 age group. Bortner (pictured on left below) defeated Robert Harmon, of Jacksonville (on right in photo), in a two hour and 45 minute gold medal match in three sets.

Harmon won the first set, 7-6 (10-6), while Bortner took the second, 7-6 (10-4) as Harmon battled leg cramps, which began late in the second set. In the 10 point tiebreaker, It took three match points for Bortner to score the win, 12-10. Neither player led by more than a point until Bortner earned the final two points. “I could tell he was hurting at the end of the second set,” said Bortner. “While I felt bad for him, I couldn’t let up because he hung in there and battled.” “I tried everything I could to shake them off,” said Harmon of the leg cramps. “I was drinking Gatorade and taking salt tablets during the breaks but I couldn’t.”

To advance to the gold medal match, Bortner defeated Thiet Lai, of Orlando in a three-hour semifinals match 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), 1-0 (10-4). Bortner started the day at 8AM with his match against Lai and took an hour break

before beginning the championship match at Noon, which ended just before 3PM. He returned to the court the following morning at 8AM to begin Men’s Doubles play with his partner Duane Hopkins, of Lakeland. It was Bortner’s third Florida Senior Games State Championships Men’s Singles gold medal. He won the gold in 60-64 age group in 2007 and 2008. He competed in the 2011 National Senior Games and won a bronze medal in men’s doubles and finished seventh in Men’s Singles. Pat Sargeant and Patrice Hirr Go Six-for-Six In Record Book Assault A pair of women whose names frequently appear in the Florida Senior Games State Championships Record Book added a few entries at Gandy Pool at the 2011 Games.

Pat Sargeant, of Melbourne (middle swimmer on starting block in photo), swam six record-breaking times in the 55-59 age group, in the 200 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly and 100 IM, on Day One of the competition. Day Two was no different as she set new marks in the 50 Butterfly and 50 and 100 Freestyle events. These were the first age group records for Sargeant, the 2005 Female Athlete of the Year, in the 55-59 age group and she holds eight records in the 50-54 age group. The 2009 Female Athlete of the Year, Patrice Hirr, of The Villages, swam three events on Day One and had three record breaking times, breaking her

own records in the 100 Breaststroke and 100 IM. She added a new entry into the record book, in the 50 Breaststroke, with a time of 40.23. She completed the six-for-six sweep on Day Two breaking her own records in the 200 Breaststroke, 50 Butterfly and 200 IM. Top 10 Ranked Pitcher Joins the Fun at Horseshoes The ringers were clanking at Rotary Park in Winter Haven as it hosted the Horseshoes competition and Tommy Hall, of Spring Hill, had the hot horseshoes hand. Hall, who is ranked in the ninth in the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association of America Top 100 Elders, had 92 ringers in 169 throws for a 76.7 ringer percentage, to win the gold medal in the 75-79 age group. In 33 tournaments over the last year, Hall has compiled a 78.2% ringer percentage to earn his top 10 ranking. Hall, a lefthander, who uses a unique ¾ reverse turn pitch, while leading with a short opposite foot stride, holds the shoe sideways instead of the usual open end of the horseshoe facing the stake. He plans on competing in the 2012 World Horseshoes Championships in Knoxville, TN, in August 2012, where close to 1,000 horseshoe pitchers will be in action. Not short on confidence, Hall admitted, “And I’m gonna win it.”

Powerhouse Pickleball Duo Continue The Winning Ways If Mixed Doubles Pickleball is being played at the Florida Senior Games State Championships, there’s a good bet the Powerhouse Pickleball Duo of Deb Harrison and Bill Freeman, from The Villages, will be awarded a gold medal.

Winning four matches in straight sets, Harrison and Freeman won their seventh consecutive gold medal in the 60-64 age group. Since 2005, Harrison and Freeman have won three gold medals in the 55-59 age group and four in the 60-64 age group. In the four straight sets wins, none of their opponents scored more than five points. Harrison and Freeman defeated Jane Michelin and Lewis Lange, of Sun City Center, in the championship match.

This year’s performance was no different than the last six. Since 2005, only three times have opponents reached eight points and in 49 games of the streak, the Powerhouse Duo has outscored opponents 543-143 and opponents have scored three points or less in 35 of the 49 games. The Streak Continues for John Shultz When it comes to Florida Senior Games streaks, no one can match John Shultz and his Table Tennis medal winning ways. With a gold medal in the Men’s Singles 75-79 age group, Shultz, of Inverness, stretched his consecutive medal-winning streak to 19 years. It is the longest consecutive year medal win streak of any Florida Senior Games State Championships athlete and his 11th Men’s Singles gold medal. He also won a silver medal in the 75-79 Men’s Doubles, with partner Jim Weisbecker, of The Villages. Shultz, the 2009 Florida Senior Games State Championships Male Athlete of the Year, has won a Table Tennis medal every year at the Games since 1993, when he competed in the 55-59 age group. Honorable Mention……

☼ Making a grand entrance at the 5K Road Race held around Lake Hollingsworth was John Collins, of Winter Haven, who commuted to the event via Sea Plane. To get to his Power Walk competition, Collins left his Winter Haven home on Lake Hartridge, took a seven minute flight, and landed his yellow sea plane on the Lake. He parked it near the start line at the Lakeland Yacht Club. Collins completed his 5K Power Walk in 39:58.54 while his wife Patricia, who made the flight with him, finished in 44:44.43.

☼ A pair of long-time Florida Senior Games Women’s Golf Champions continued their gold medal-winning ways on the links at Cleveland Heights Golf Course,. Lakeland’s Janet Brown shot an 80, the lowest score of the day, to win the 60-64 age group championship, for her ninth consecutive gold medal dating back to 2003. Brown holds the 50-54 and 55-59 age group records and shot the lowest women’s score in the history of the Games with a 72 in 2004. Corkey Nydle, of The Villages, won her eighth consecutive State Championships gold medal, with an 85 to win the 80-84 age group. Nydle is the record holder in three age groups, 70-74, 75-79 and 80-84.

☼ Continuing his show of longevity on the Basketball court, Umatilla’s Andy McGuffin won gold medals in all three Basketball Shooting events to bring his total to 44 overall medals since 1994. Most notable was his 15th gold medal in Free Throw Shooting. Over the 15 year span, McGuffin has completed 387 of 420 free throws for a 92% mark and he was named the 2005 Florida Senior Games State Championships Male Athlete of the Year. ☼ Among the men’s record-breaking swimming performances, Brian Voisard, of Winter Haven, added his name into a third age group, the 60-64, with a time of 5:51.61 in the 500 Freestyle. He set the 50-54 age group record in 2005 and the 55-59 record in 2007.

☼ Three Senior Women’s athletes had impressive weeks of competition as, Claudette Braswell, of Lake Wales (pictured on left above) Avis Vaught, of The Villages (pictured center above), and Sheryl Fleming, of Orlando (pictured on right above) combined to compete in 11 different sports. Fleming had medal winning performances in the 50-54 age group in Bowling, Golf and Basketball Shooting. Vaught won medals in the 60-64 age group at the field events of the Track & Field meet, Basketball Shooting, 3-on-3 Basketball and Volleyball. Braswell won in the 75-79 age group in Pickleball, Horseshoes, Basketball Shooting and Racquetball. ☼ Strength was in the spotlight at The Lakeland Center, host to Powerlifting, where Segismundo Pares, of Ocala, combined for a bench press/deadlift weight of 455.00 kg (1,003 lbs). His total was more than 100 kg ahead of his closest competitor, to take the gold medal in the 50-54 age group. His total included a bench press of 195.00kg (429 lbs) and a deadlift of 260kg (573 lbs). His 2011 lifts were far behind his overall best performance of a combined 527.5kg (1,163 lbs) in 2009.
