Welcome!Thanks for picking up our inaugural issue of the West Michigan Art Guide.If you’re like me, you enjoy going to art shows. You delight in being surrounded by the tantalizing mix of colors, forms, textures,

creativity (and fresh air)that can only be found at such an event. Being able to meet the folks

who create this inspirational work, and hear their stories, is an added bonus. The same feelings apply when visiting a regional art gallery, or being given the opportunity to get inside working artists’ studios. Afterwards, you’re often left wondering: “where can I go next weekend to experience something like this again?” Well, that’s what prompted the publication of this directory. The West Michigan Art Guide has been three years in the making. Lots of research, thought and care went into creating this guide for you. I wanted it to be a functional, attractive, easy-to-use resource with accurate, up-to-date information.The Art Guide includes all of the galleries

(that we’re aware of) that primarily offer original art and contemporary craft. The event listings don’t include every art/craft show where anyone can set up a booth. The juried shows listed here should be worth taking a “road trip” to visit. And lots of

locator maps in the gallery sections will help you find and visit local galleries on your way to and from other art events.

Thanks to the gallery owners and show pro-moters who jumped on board to help make this first West Michigan Art Guide possible. We are already looking forward to making next year’s Art Guide bigger and better.I hope the Art Guide helps you discover the diversity of original art and fine craft available to see and buy right here in West Michigan.

• Listings in the event sections (Art Fairs, Gallery Walks, Studio Tours, Artist Markets) are presented in chronological order. Each event is color coded so you can tell at a glance where in West Michigan it takes place.

• Some of the gallery and event listings give websites you can visit for more information. We have eliminated the http://www. from these addresses since

most current browsers don’t need them. But if you have trouble accessing these sites, adding http://www. in front of the address might help.

HANDCRAFTED VS . MANUFACTURED Your home proabably has plenty of commercially manufactured items in every room as most homes do. Your home probably also has a number of handmade, handcrafted items also. Which ones have more meaning to you? We’re guessing the latter.

Items made by hand have unique qualities that mass-produced items don’t. They look different, they feel different and have a distinct character that can’t be reproduced. Original artwork is more compelling and engaging than anything that can be found in a “big box” store.
