Greetings,

As another year of survivorship ends, I am reflecting on the many accomplishments of Sisters Network Inc., and the lifesaving breast cancer outreach work that our national network of African American breast cancer survivors continue to do each and every day. I can say that I am truly proud and honored to be in the company of my Sisters’.

For nearly two decades, Sisters Network national office, our affiliate membership base, friends & family have worked diligently to lay a strong foundation for our organization.

The year 2011 was no exception. Sisters Network formed new strategic corporate and community partnerships, expanded outreach initiatives; created new national initiatives and taken our leadership and advocacy work to the next level.

While many non-profits have been challenged during these tough economic times, I am proud to say Sisters Network has remained lean and fiscally strong. We are fortunate and grateful that our various streams of financial and volunteer

founder’s message

support have been maintained allowing Sisters to continue to focus on our very important national mission of educating African American women about the devastating impact of breast cancer, saving lives, and providing the advocacy of sisterhood.

Leadership and advocacy is an area we gave great attention to throughout 2011. Sisters Network board of directors and national office team recognizes that we must focus our efforts on empowering our affiliate chapter leaders with the training, information, and resources they need to be successful in elevating our nationwide effort to mobilize Sisters’ membership; and to share our mission and breast cancer awareness message to African American women nationally and globally. You will continue to see our leadership and advocacy efforts rise in the coming years.

As the CEO of a nationally recognized organization, I am still in awe by the lives that Sisters Network touches every day whether it is through our chapter survivor support meetings; national outreach initiatives; providing funds to a survivor and free mammograms for the general public through our Breast Cancer Assistance Program (B-CAP); or walking in unity with survivors, their families and the community during Sisters Network Stop the Silence Annual Breast Cancer 5K Walk/Run.

I am always saddened when I get the call or email that we have lost another sister to breast cancer. However, it is also what inspires me and all our members to fight for a cure to this disease. As you review Sisters Network annual report, I ask you to join me as I renew my pledge and commitment to breast cancer survivorship, Sisters Network Inc, and educating the community. The African American woman’s breast cancer issue is our story, our lives and our legacy.

Our time is NOW! I know together we can and will “Stop the Silence®”

Yours in sisterhood and survivorship,

Karen Eubanks JacksonFounder/CEO

about usSisters Network® Inc. (SNI) is a leading voice and the only national African American breast cancer survivorship organization in the United States supported by survivor-run affiliate chapters nationwide. Sisters Network is governed by an elected Board of Directors and assisted by an appointed Medical Advisory Committee. The organization’s purpose is to save lives and provide a broader scope of knowledge that addresses the breast cancer survivorship crisis affecting African American women around the country.

As a nationally recognized organization among leading medical establishments and breast cancer physicians, Sisters Network is also recognized as a critical information and resource link to African American women.

Among the organization’s trademark and successful national community based outreach programs are the Gift for Life Block Walk®Pink Ribbon Awareness Initiative and the First Ladies Brunch.

These initiatives are implemented through Sisters’ affiliate chapters and are generously underwritten through corporate and community partnerships and private contributions. In April 2010, Sisters Network Inc made history by hosting the 1st National African American Breast Cancer 5K Walk /Run in Houston, Texas. The historic event will be an annual walk to Stop the Silence®, bring about breast cancer awareness and replace FEAR with HOPE as thousands of participants from across the United States walk together to find a cure.

The organizations’ national slogan, “STOP THE SILENCE®,” speaks directly to the African American community and its long-standing history of not discussing cancer and other life-threatening health concerns. The slogan has been used in Social Media; Billboard and Bumper Sticker campaigns in support of Sisters’ national branding strategies.

Sisters Network® Inc. strong connection, relationship and understanding of the mindset in the African American community continues to allow the organization to effectively impact, educate and heighten breast health awareness and survivorship among black women nationally and internationally.

national programsNATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN BREAST CANCER CONFERENCEIn 1999, Sisters broke new ground by hosting the nation’s only National African American Breast Cancer Conference which provides a broader scope of knowledge and addresses the breast cancer survivorship crisis affecting the African American woman. This national conference which attracts more than 500 participants, including nationally recognized medical experts, has been held in metropolitan cities such as; Houston, Atlanta, Detroit, Richmond, VA, Baton Rouge, LA and Chicago.

STOP THE SILENCE® 1ST NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN BREAST CANCER 5K WALK In April, 2010 Sisters Network Inc. made history again by hosting the 1st National African American Breast Cancer 5K Walk /Run in Houston. The Stop the Silence® 5K Walk/Run attracted over 4,500 participants. Funds raised from Stop the Silence® will benefit Sisters Network® Inc. Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP), which provides support to women facing financial challenges after breast cancer diagnosis. This program offers financial support for mammograms, medical related lodging, co-pay; office visits, prescriptions, and transportation.

PINK RIBBON AWARENESS INITIATIVE The pink ribbon is the national symbol for breast cancer awareness. The Pink Ribbon Awareness Initiative is Sisters’ national faith-based educational outreach program that reaches women in church with information on how to access breast care services and resources. The focus of this outreach is to increase the number of women obtaining mammograms and heighten their general knowledge. Sisters Network® Inc. (SNI) affiliate chapter members and community volunteers disseminate information on breast cancer to African American churches across the United States. SNI members give testimonies as survivor role models to encourage and inspire.

GIFT FOR LIFE BLOCK WALK® This nationally recognized educational outreach initiative is the Sisters Network® Inc. “Gift for Life Block Walk®”. During the months of September or October the affiliate chapters of Sisters Network Inc. collaborate with organizations, community groups, and volunteers to coordinate the promotion of breast health awareness in the African American community. This unique and innovative program allows a breast cancer survivor to partner with a volunteer and canvass door-to-door in the African American community to distribute breast health education brochures and resource information. The community has an opportunity to meet survivors, hear their stories, and experience their triumph over breast cancer. Individuals are invited to the event site to enjoy refreshments, visit breast cancer-related agencies and learn more about the resources and services available in their community. Free Mammography screenings are also offered by a mobile unit at select event sites.

national programsBREAST CANCER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (BCAP)BCAP provides support to women facing financial challenges after breast cancer diagnosis. This program offers free mammograms and financial support for medical related lodging, co-pay, office visits, prescriptions, and prothesis.

TWEENS IN PINK This program is designed to educate tweens, girls ages 12-16, about the importance of breast health and equip them to become breast health ambassadors for their family members. Tweens will be reached through collaborations between Sisters Network® Inc. (SNI) and organizations within the community that have existing programs geared towards tween girls. Tweens in Pink consists of a presentation and a take-home component for the tweens. Tweens will be asked to collect data from women, blood relatives, in their families and input their information in a designated location on the SNI website. Incentives will be offered for the tween/group of tweens who reach their target number by the date assigned.

FIRST LADIES BRUNCH The purpose of the brunch is to provide a forum to educate the faith based community on breast health issues affecting African American women in the Houston community and the pivotal role played by Sisters Network Inc. in this educational process. Research shows that in the African American community women are the care providers. Sisters Network is a viable resource to churches in the community. The First Ladies Brunch will be implemented across the United States by Sisters Network Affiliate Chapters.

ADVOCACY-501 HIn 2011 Sisters Network will launch its advocacy program. This initiative will afford Sisters Network the opportunity to be more vocal as it relates to legislative policies in the areas of breast cancer clinical trials, treatment and survivorship. Using our existing constituency, coupled with our database of existing local, national and state African American organizations we will increase our outreach efforts and mobilize African American breast cancer survivors from across the United States.

YOUNG SISTERS INITIATIVE (YSI)African American women are being diagnosed with breast cancer at an early age. In an effort to address the needs of these women, Sisters Network® Inc. launched the Young Sisters Initiative (YSI). This program is designed to reach women diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 45.

It’s fall, and—because October is Breast Cancer Awareness

Month—chances are good that you’re hearing something about

breast cancer in the news. If you have been diagnosed with breast

cancer yourself, this focus in the media may raise questions—

or you may be inspired to join some of the many awareness or

advocacy efforts making headlines. If a friend or loved one is

facing a diagnosis, you may wish you could direct him or her to a

source to provide some insight and support. Established national

breast cancer support and advocacy organizations are a good

place to turn for all of these needs. Here are a few organizations

with comprehensive programs.

Karen Eubanks Jackson became committed to “step out on faith”to lead the effort to encourage discussion, inspire the celebra-tion of survivorship and create a sisterhood of support forAfrican American women fighting breast cancer.

Jackson, Founder & CEO of Sisters Network® Inc. (SNI) is at thehelm of the nation’s only African American breast cancer sur-

vivorship organization that addresses the needs particular toAfrican American women. Jackson is a 17 year breast cancersurvivor, who turned a personal challenge into an organizationthat provides standardized educational programs, support, em-powerment and hope. During her personal fight to survive breastcancer, she recognized a lack of “sisterhood” in traditional or-ganizations, a staggering breast cancer mortality rate for AfricanAmericans and limited culturally sensitive material.

In 1994, Jackson founded Sisters Network® Inc. in order to en-sure that African American women diagnosed with breast can-cer receive comprehensive medical care and social support.

Jackson’s primary motivation was to break through the silenceand shame of breast cancer that immobilizes African Americanwomen, restrict their ability to receive support services, inter-feres with early detection, and ultimately affects their survivalrates. Under Jackson’s leadership, Sisters Network has experi-enced phenomenal growth resulting in over 40 survivor-run af-filiate chapters, serving more than 3000 members and associatemembers nationwide. Sisters Network® Inc. is the leading voicein the African American woman’s fight against breast cancer. Inaddition, Jackson developed several national outreach initiatives, including: The Gift for Life Block Walk® and the Pink RibbonAwareness Project.

Jackson is a widely recognized minority breast health advocate, promoting legislation on the state and federal level. A highlysought after speaker and expert on the African Americanwoman’s breast cancer experience, Jackson has traveled nation-ally and internationally, bringing her message to the U.S. ArmyComprehensive Breast Cancer Center in Germany, the NationalCongressional Black Caucus and the Centers for Disease Con-trol and Prevention (CDC), as well as other organizations. Jack-son has been featured in numerous national newspapers, magazines, television, radio programs, and internet media out-lets, inclusive of the U.S. News & World Report, the Health Net-work, HBO special: Cancer: Evolution to Revolution, Essence,MAMM, Jet, Heart and Soul, Breast Cancer Wellness and WebMD Health.

Jackson is a published co-author of several works, including“Breast Diseases: A Year Book Quarterly, Vol.14 No.22003;Breast Cancer in African American Women: The Evolution ofSisters Network, Inc.; A National African American Breast Can-cer Survivor Advocate Organization with Lisa A. Newman,M.D., F.A.C.S. She is in several books “Breast Cancer BlackWomen”, “My Mother’s Breast and Celebrating Life.” Jackson’sachievements have been recognized by the State of Texas Houseof Representatives and corporate America, bestowing honorsthat include: TNT Dramatic Difference Award; Breast CancerHero by Lifetime TV; JC Penney “Champion of Change”: TheJefferson Award-ABC and the Lance Armstrong “Voice of Sur-vivorship” award.

“I view Sisters’ as a beautiful work in progress. I am proud ofour development and believe our future will be even brighter.Sisters’ is a magnet that attracts those who see and want to worktowards a beautiful life that can enrich and save lives. It does-n’t get any better than that,” added Jackson.

During the month of October, the Forward Times will highlightlocal breast cancer survivors involved with Sisters Network Inc.For more information, please visit www.sistersnetworkinc.orgor call 713.781.0255.

CommunitySisters Network Inc. GreensboroProviding Breast Cancer Support for African American Women

by Nora Jones, President

It was 1992 when I lost my sister to breast can-cer, after being a survivor

of five years. Her death was extremely painful for me, and I decided that I would do ev-erything I could to minimize my risk of developing this detrimental disease. Unfor-tunately, my efforts were not enough. Fifteen years after my sister’s death, I received my own diagnosis of breast cancer. Around the same time, I was also a part of a local community group known as the Greensboro Health Disparities Collaborative, which was partnering with UNC-Chapel Hill and the Moses Cone Health System on a breast cancer research study examining breast cancer disparities among African American and White women.

During the course of my treatment, I became aware of how difficult it was to remain focused and positive during the numerous doc-tors’ appointments, medical tests, surgery and radiation. I tried to find an African

American mentor at the American Cancer Society, but I was told that there were none available. I attended a breast cancer support group but quickly discovered that this group did not meet my needs. On top of all this, I was very much aware of the higher death rates that Afri-can American women in this country experience compared to White women.

Finally, through the American Cancer Society, I was referred to an African American breast cancer sur-vivorship group in Charlotte and in Durham known as Sisters Network. Connect-ing with these groups made a world of difference for me; I finally discovered the emo-tional support I craved from women who shared similar experiences.

The beginning of a new chapterWith more than 40 Sisters Network chapters nation-wide, I began to wonder why I had to seek help outside of Greensboro. It was at that moment that the inspiration was born to start a Sisters Network chapter here in Greensboro for other African American women sharing the same frustrations I experi-enced, and who yearned to have support from women of the same racial and cultural background.

In July 2010, Sisters Net-work Greensboro was estab-lished to support and educate women in our community affected by this disease. Sis-ters Network Greensboro currently has more than 25 members and is quickly grow-ing as more women in our community learn about the organization.

The many common sto-ries and experiences is what bonds the group, because the women are able to learn from and help each other. One member recalls the day she found out she had breast cancer: “I thought there was no help. I was so sad that I stayed in bed for three days. When I got a phone call from Sisters Network, I went to my first meeting. The women there told their stories. I have my family on my side, and friends, but it is nothing like having support on the outside. I am proud to be a part of this meaningful, great group of women.”

Education saves livesThe mission of Sisters Net-work Greensboro is to save lives by educating women about the devastating ef-fects of breast cancer, and to serve as a resource for health information pertinent to African American women. Our chapter is on a mission to reach out to as many women and men in this community as possible with resources and information about breast can-cer, because we understand the many complexities along with the many emotions that one faces when confronted with breast cancer. Here are some of our initiatives and accomplishments.initiatives:l the PiNk RiBBoN
