SMU2011 NOTESSMU brings a 7-12 overall record, including a 3-4 Conference USA mark. The Mustangs split a pair of back-to-back games with Tulane over the weekend after winning two-straight C-USA matches over Houston (3-2) and Tulsa (3-1). Jessica Oliver and Dana Powell lead SMU’s attack with 230 kills and 221 kills, respectively. Kellie Becerra has turned in 631 assists (8.53 a/s), and Sidney Steward has anchored the backline defense with 372 digs (5.02 d/s).

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Oct. 10, 2010)DALLAS, Texas - For the second consecutive outing, Memphis was unable to solve a strong SMU defense as the Mustangs completed a weekend sweep of the Tigers via a 3-1 decision on Sunday afternoon at Moody Coliseum. Memphis falls to 11-7, 2-4 in league play. SMU improves to 14-4 and 6-1 in C-USA action.

Set two was closely contested with both sides gaining the advantage, but neither team leading by more than two points before Maja Kostic stepped to the service line with Memphis trailing 18-17 after a kill by Altrese Hawkins. Kostic knotted the set at 18-all with an ace and her serve fueled a five-point surge that put the Tigers ahead 21-18. Memphis finished the set strong, scoring the final four points of the set to send the two teams into the locker rooms tied at 1-1. Hawkins, who downed six kills in the first set, added seven in the second to help the U of M claim its first set of the weekend, 25-19.

SMU, who made 15.5 blocks on Saturday, made a pair of blocks and used two Memphis of-fensive errors to get out to a quick 4-0 lead in the third. The Mustangs finished the day with 13 total blocks. They tacked on a pair of kills to go up 6-0 before Vesna Jelic snapped the string with a kill. SMU held on to the early-set momentum and used five-point spurt to take a commanding 11-1 advantage. A service ace by Katlin Inglish capped a Memphis run to make it a five-point contest, but that would be as close as the Tigers could come. SMU scored five-straight to make it 22-10 and took a 2-1 lead in the match with a convincing 25-16 decision.

The fourth and final set was a continuation of the third, as SMU used a seven-point surge to take an 8-1 lead. Memphis was never able to find a rhythm as SMU extended its lead to 20-8. The Tigers hit just .081 in the fourth, while SMU hit a scorching .481 on 13 kills and no errors. The Mustangs posted a 92-percent side-out rating in the final period. Memphis did not help its cause, committing 18 service errors and giving up eight SMU aces in the match. Christine Bach paced the Tigers with a match-high 17 digs. Jelic finished with nine digs.

Defensively, four Tigers posted double-figures in digs, led by Christine Bach’s match-high 16. Jelic and Becky Shaffer picked up 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Trailing 1-0 in the match, Memphis staged a set-two comeback to send both teams into the intermission even at 1-1. Behind 21-15, a kill by Jelic sparked a 5-0 run to cut the Memphis deficit to just one point. After a Golden Hurricane kill made it 22-20, the Tigers reeled off the next five points for clinch the victory.

For the second-straight day, the third set proved to be the critical one. Memphis trailed for the major portion of the set before a kill by Jelic even things at 18-all. 2010 in ReviewCoach Jauregui and the Tigers welcomed in nine newcomers from across the globe in 2010 and had a successful campaign while getting everyone adjusted to the Memphis way of doing things. The Tigers posted a 16-16 record, including a 9-3 non-confer-ence mark and won both the Memphis Tiger Invitational and Belmont Invitational pre-season tournaments. Altrese Hawkins was named to Conference USA’s All-First Team in addition to being a second-team performer in COBRA Magazine’s 2010 postsea-son awards. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Like a HawkAltrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sophomore season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 campaign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. Hawkins lived up to the hype, as she was named the Memphis Invitational’s MVP and also tabbed C-USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29.

800-win MilestoneThe University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, col-lected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers are currently 28thon the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list.

The Tigers fall to 14-5 overall this sea-son and 3-3 in Conference USA, while UTEP improves to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in C-USA.

Memphis and UTEP battled throughout the first set as neither team could take a commanding lead. Memphis led 10-8 after a kill by Jelic and an attack error by UTEP, but the Miners rallied to score three straight points and take the lead 11-10. The Tigers then found themselves down 22-19 after a kill by Herrera from gave UTEP a three-point advantage and forced Memphis to call a timeout. A Miners’ service error coupled with a kill by Hawkins and an ace from Molnar let Memphis tie the set back at 22 as part of a 5-1 Memphis run that gave the Tigers a 24-23 advantage. UTEP staved off the 24-23 set point with a kill from Herrera, but the Tigers clinched the set with a block from Jovanovic and Meyer and a ser-vice error by UTEP. A. Hawkins led the Tigers in the first set with seven kills on 16 attempts while hitting at a .375 clip, and Molnar chipped in 15 assists.

After being tied 1-1 in the fourth set, a kill by Meyer sparked an 7-3 run that gave Memphis an 8-4 lead that it never relinquished. Three kills from A. Hawkins and one from L. Hawkins spurred another Memphis run that pushed the Tigers’ lead to 15-10. A service error by Jovanovic ended the run and made the score 15-11, but the Tigers rallied to score three straight and maintain their large lead at 18-11. The Miners would get as close as 21-17, but a kill from L. Hawkins and a bad set from Miners’ setter Marie-Therese Joyce gave the set to Memphis 25-20.

The Tigers sprinted out to a 7-3 advantage in the deciding fifth set behind two kills from A. Hawkins and service aces from Hajnalka Molnar and Maja Kostic. EL PASO, Texas - The University of Memphis volleyball team dropped its second-straight match to UTEP, falling 3-1 (16-25; 20-25; 25-19; 20-25) to the Miners Saturday night at Memorial Gym. The Tigers move to 14-6 overall and 3-4 in Conference USA play, while UTEP improves to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in C-USA.

Memphis jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first setbehind kills from Lauren and A. Hawkins and then extended that lead to 5-3 with a kill from Jovanovic. However, UTEP rebounded with three-straight points to take a 6-5 lead. A service error by A. Hawkins gave the Miners a 7-6 lead, which they would never relin-quish.

UTEP used a 4-1 run, which included kills by Jeane Horton and Jacqueline Cason as well as a setting error by Molnar, to take an 11-7 advantage. The Tigers would get as close as 19-16 after a solo block from Katie Meyer and a setting error on Malia Patterson, but UTEP finished on a 6-0 run to take the set 25-16.

The Tigers again got out to an early lead in the second set when a service ace from Molnar and a kill by Jovanovic made it 4-2. Xitali Herrera quickly responded for UTEP by downing back-to-back kills to net the set at four before a setting error by Aleksandra Petronijevic gave the Miners a 5-4 advantage.

Those three points were part of a 7-1 run by UTEP that gave the Miners a com-manding 9-5 lead early in the set. Memphis battled back with consecutive kills by L. Hawkins and a solo block by Molnar to claw within 10-9, but a service error by Jelic ended the run and a kill by UTEP gave the Miners a 12-9 lead. Memphis kept it close for the rest of set, and found itself down 21-18 after a kill by A. Hawkins. Two-straight errors by the Tigers killed the run, however, and the Miners closed the set out, 25-20.

Just as in the second set, Memphis sprinted out to an early 4-2 lead behind kills from A. Hawkins and Jovanovic but allowed UTEP to fight back to take a 5-4 lead. The Tigers responded this time, however, as A. Hawkins netted four service aces in the midst of a 6-0 Memphis run that put the Tigers in front 10-5. The Miners got within three points after a kill by Marie-Therese Joyce made it 11-8, but the Tigers came back and took a 16-9 lead. UTEP would only get as close as 24-19 before a kill by A. Hawkins sealed the set for Memphis, 25-19.

UTEP killed the Tigers’ third-set momentum by opening the fourth set on a 6-2 run powered by two kills by Herrera and two Memphis errors. Another kill by Herrera in addition to a block coupled with a Jelic error allowed the Miners to extend their advantage to 10-5. The teams traded points until back-to-back kills by Jelic got Memphis to within two points at 15-13, but the Miners regained con-trol at 19-15 after two Memphis errors and two UTEP kills. The Tigers would get as close as 21-17 after a UTEP service error, but the Miners finished the set out 25-20 and the match, 3-1.

CONFERENCE USA

After marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season, Confer-ence USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excel-lence has been the league’s guid-ing principle and remains today a common thread for a promising fu-ture. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and women’s programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leader-ship in athletics, academics and in our communities. All C-USA institutions sponsor Divi-sion I-A football, along with several other men’s and women’s athletic pro-grams, many of which compete regu-larly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (bas-ketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball). The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Com-missioner’s Honor Roll and the Com-missioner’s Academic Medal, indica-tive of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 post-graduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institu-tional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing stu-dent-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic stand-ing and participation in their elected sport.
