SEASON OUTLOOK
1996 IMDY TIGER VOLLEYBALL
With a core of fivereturning players fromlast year, five talentednewcomers, and an up-and-coming first-yearhead coach. The Uni-versity of MemphisLady Tiger volleyballteam is primed andready to return to theNCAA Tournament, after a 1995 seasonfilled with injuries andheartbreaking losses.
V list one year removed from the NCAATournament, the 1996 Lady Tiger volleyballteam is eager to return to the "Big Dance."
New head coach Carrie Yerty takes over aLady Tiger team that returns five key playersfrom last year's squad.
Heather Fletcher is the lone senior on thisyear's Lady Tiger team, but the Richardson,Tex. native will have plenty of talent surround-ing her.
Fletcher returns to the Lady Tiger lineuphealthy after battling injuries much of last sea-son. Despite the injuries, Fletcher still postedsome impressive numbers. In just 18 matchesFletcher tallied 167 kills while hitting .126.Fletcher also compiled 109 digs and 19 ser-vice aces. Depite her limited playing time,
MEMPHIS VOLLEYBALL
Fletcher finished third on the team in to-tal blocks.
Another Lady Tiger who returns af-ter an injury-plagued '95 season is jun-ior Shoni Hodges. Hodges was voted theteam's Best All-Around Player a yearago, despite having to play through somepainful shoulder injuries, limiting her hit-ting on the front line. But with Hodgeshealthy this year, she will be a focal pointon the 1996 Lady Tiger team.
Hodges' versatility was evident lastyear, as she moved to the setter posi-tion and performed admirably for theLady Tigers. Hodges recorded 426 as-sists, as well as 167 kills. Hodges hopesthis year she will be able to return to theoutside where she proved to be a forceher freshman season.
Junior outside hitter BeckyTigert re-turns to the Memphis lineup after a com-ing out party in 1995. Tigert, voted theteam's Most Improved Player after lastseason, demonstrated great hitting skillsand was a force at the net for the LadyTigers.
Tigert was second on the Lady Ti-ger squad with 177 kills, while recordinga 130 hitting percentage. Tigert will becounted on heavily again this year to pro-vide some firepower at the net.
Junior Liz Mullen andsophomoreTara Pfeffer return after im-pressive first seasons with the Lady Ti-gers in 1995.
Mullen, from Mesa, Ariz., was votedthe team's Newcomer of the Year and isa powerful outside hitter, while Pfeffer'sjumping ability makes her dangerousfrom the outside as well.
Mullen and Pfeffer were steady allseason. Mullen finished the 1995 cam-paign with 106 kills, while Pfeffer added97. Mullen was one of the Lady Tigers'serve specialists, finishing the seasonwith 31 service aces, second on theteam only to Shoni Hodges.
With five returning players in place, the Lady Tigers feel confident about the1996 season, but add a strong freshmanclass, which has been labeled as one ofthe strongest in the program's history, and this could be a break through sea-son for the Lady Tigers.
Junior outside hitter Jamie Ruppheads the talented group of newcomersto this year's squad. Rupp, a transferfrom Brescia College in Owensboro,Kentucky, compiled several honors whileat Brescia College. She was voted to theKentucky Women's Intercollegiate Con-ference First-Team while recording 383kills and a .374 hitting percentage. Shealso proved to be a force at the netwith 169 total blocks.
Middle hitters Nicole Cleveland andRosie Glenn join the Lady Tigers for theirfreshman season,as they will try to pickup the slack left by the departure of All-Conference performer Monique Swaby.
Cleveland will be the Lady Tigers'tallest player at 6-2.The Elkhorn, NE na-tive joins the Lady Tigers after a stellarcareer at Marian High School in Omaha,Neb. where she lettered four years in vol-leyball, as well as track and basketball.
Glenn brings some impressive cre-dentials to the Lady Tigers after an im-pressive career at Liverpool High Schoolin Liverpool, NY. Glenn recorded 234kills, 17 block solos and 31 aces last sea-son for LHS, while earning All-State hon-ors.
With the loss of Janice Neyens tograduation, the Lady Tigers have re-loaded at the setter position. FreshmenAmy Vaughn and Lacey Morse will beimmediate impact players for Memphis,as they are set to share time at the set-ter position.
Vaughn is a 5-6, Herscher, III., na-tive who was named the National Vol-leyball Player of the Year for her play dur-ing her senior season.
Morse, a native of Spring,Texas, isa taller player who brings various stylesto the Lady Tiger team. At 5-10, Morseis a big hitter, as well as a big setter, andcan be used in several different situa-tions.
Morse and Vaughn are expected tomake a good combination at the setterposition.
With all of the talent on this year'ssquad, first-year head coach CarrieYertyis looking forward to her inaugural sea-son.
Yerty comes to the Lady Tiger pro-gram after a one-year stint as an assis-tant coach at Arizona. While at Arizona,Yerty worked as the Wildcats' recruitingcoordinator and worked with the middlehitters.
Prior to her stint at Arizona, Yerty wasrecruiting coordinator and assistantcoach at Eastern Washington for threeseasons. Yerty, the former Carrie Cou-turier, was a standout at WashingtonState during her playing days, earningseveral Pac-10 honors during her fourseasons.
Yerty and the Lady Tigers will hopeto continue the success that she has hadas a player, and as a coach and makeher first season a memorable and suc-cessful one.

1996 LADY TIGER VOLLEYBALL
Despite early season turmoil and a season-longfight with injuries, the 1995 Lady Tigersscratched and clawed their way to a 13-20record.
r he 1995 season was a series of upsand downs, but through it all the LadyTigers never quit battling.
Senior Monique Swaby led the wayfor Memphis last season. Swaby had oneof the best seasons in Lady Tiger his-tory, as she etched her name through-out the University of Memphis recordbooks.
Swaby led the Lady Tigers in nearlyevery statistical category, as she wastruly the heart and soul of the Lady Ti-ger team.
For her efforts during the 1995 sea-son, the former Conference MVP earnedfirst team All-Conference USA honors forthe Lady Tigers.
For her career, Swaby became theall-time kills leader in LadyTiger history,as she compiled 1,819 kills from 1992-1995. Swaby finished with 475 more killsthan former leader Peggy Rule (1,344).
Swaby also ranks first on the careercharts in total attempts with 4,436.Swaby ranks third all-time in kill percent-age (.236) and block assists (317), whileshe is fifth on the career charts in digs(1,182) and block solos (122).
Swaby was not the only nice storyof 1995. Shoni Hodges played througha painful shoulder injury that was sup-posed to keep her out of action for all of1995.The injury limited her hitting skills, but Hodges, who was voted the Best-All-Around Player on the Lady Tigerteam, moved to setter and was a keyplayer in the team's success.
Becky Tigert had somewhat of acoming out party last season, as theGermantown, Tenn., native finished theseason with 177 kills, second on theteam, while compiling a .130 hitting per-centage.
Tigert's outstanding play during the
1995 season earned her the team's MostImproved Player award at the end of theyear.
Janice Neyens finished up her ca-reer on a high note, as she led the LadyTigers with 703 assists on the season, atotal that ranked ninth all-time for a singleseason in LadyTiger history.
Heather Fletcher, like Hodges, hadto play through an injury-plagued sea-son, but still managed to put up somepretty impressive numbers. In just 18matches Fletcher recorded 36 kills, 19aces and 56 total blocks. Her 56 blocktotal was second on the team.
Two LadyTiger newcomers showedplenty of promise during the 1995 sea-son.
Liz Mullen andTara Pfefferwere piv-otal players throughout the year for theLady Tigers.
Mullen a transfer from MississippiCollege was named the Lady TigersNewcomer of the Year, while Pfeffer fin-ished fourth on the team with 151 kills.

USAConference USA (C-USA), one of
the nation's newest intercollegiate ath-letic conference, has blasted off to agreat start in its inaugural season of com-petition. C-USA consists of 12 universi-ties and spans 12 states across theUnited States, more than any other Divi-sion 1-A conference.
Conference USA is comprised ofUAB, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Lou-isville, Marquette, Memphis, UNC Char-lotte, Saint Louis, South Florida, South-ern Mississippi andTulane. Eleven of theinstitutions began athletic participation in1995, while Houston will join competi-tion this fall.
The new conference will hope tocapitalize on the recent success of sev-eral of the league members. ConferenceUSA teams have made numerous top 25finishes and have appeared in three bowlgames in the last five seasons.
With member institutions attemptingto build a solid foundation for ConferenceUSA, each of the schools brings a strongfootball tradition to C-USA. Legendaryindividuals like Memphis' Isaac Bruce(Rams), Keith Butler (Seahawks) andTim Harris (49ers), Houston's Heismantrophy winner Andre Ware, SouthernMiss' Brett Favre and Louisville's JohnnyUnitas give the conference a great foot-ball history to build upon, while otherleague notables, such as current NBAstars Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway(Memphis), Hakeem Olajuwon (Hous-ton), Clyde Drexler (Houston), and ma-jor league baseball's Doug Drabek(Houston), Charlie Lea (Memphis) andJim LaFountain (Louisville) bring tradi-tion to C-USA basketball and Olympicsports.
The conference officially unveiled itsname, logo and commissioner on April24,1995 at Harry Caray's Restaurant inChicago. Michael L. Slive was named thefirst commissioner of Conference USAby the presidents of the 12 institutions.
Conference USA sponsors 18sports, including Division 1-A football, which begins play this fall.
The league sponsors championshipcompetition in the following men's sportsbaseball, basketball, cross country, foot-
ball, golf, soccer, tennis and track and:ield (indoor and outdoor). C-USA alsowill sponsor the following women'ssports: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field (indoor andoutdoor) and volleyball. Rifle is spon-sored as a coed sport.
This fall, six member institutions,Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, Mem-phis, Southern Mississippi and Tulane, will compete for the first Conference USAfootball championship. Each school willplay five conference games, with theregular season champion earning anautomatic berth to the St. Jude LibertyBowl. C-USA also has a five-year foot-ball television contract with LibertySports, which takes advantage of the factthat 11 of the 12 C-USA television mar-kets rank among the top 50 nationally, and two (Chicago & Houston) are in theten largest markets.
In men's basketball, ConferenceUSA is comprised of three divisions,Red, White and Blue. The 1996 men'sbasketball season produced sixpostseason teams (four NCAA and twoNIT) and by season's end, C-USA wasranked as the fourth best conference inthe nation by the RPl.The conferencewill embark on its second season of asix-year basketball television agreementwith Creative Sports and ESPN.
Women's basketball, which also hasa three-division format, is coming off amemorable first season, as well. Four C-USA teams earned NCAA Tournamentbids, the third highest among Division 1 -A conferences.
Other Conference USA accomplish-ments during the inaugural season in-cluded member institutions receivingbids to the NCAA Soccer champion-ships, NCAA Volleyball championships,NCAA Golf championships and theNCAA baseball tournament.
As further evidence of the youngleague's stature, Conference USA hasbeen designated as one of the eight eq-uity conferences in the proposed newNCAA Governance structure that willtake the lead in decision making for col-lege athletics.

Early references to the football teamtabbed them only as the Blue and GrayWarriors of West Tennessee NormalSchool.
After the final game of the 1914 sea-son, there was a student parade. Dur-ing this event, several Normal studentsshouted, "We fight likeTigers.'The nick-name was born.
More and more the nickname "Ti-gers" was used, particularly in campuspublications. But it did not catch on withthe newspapers downtown. They contin-ued to use "Normals" or the "Blue andGray" when referring to the University.
Under coach Lester Barnard in1922, Normal's football team gave a ringof truth to that old student yell about Ti-gers. The team adopted a motto - "Ev-ery Man A Tiger" and went on to score174 points while allowing their opponentsjust 29 points.
In the late 1920s, student publica-tions and downtown newspapers beganreferring to the football team as the"Teachers" or "Tutors." The Tiger nick-name would return. But not until 1939was it finally adopted as the official nick-name for The University of Memphis.
