1987 VOLLEYBALL OUTLOOK

Out with the old and in with the new. The 1987 Memphis State Lady Tigervolleyball team will illuminate a new look this season.

With the departure of ninth-year head coach Diane Hale, and the arrival ofJim Callender, the former head volleyball coach at Western Oregon StateCollege, the MSU women will perpertrate an assult on their 1986 17-17 record.

"We are a very young team," explained Challender. "We will have to dependon the playing experience of our three seniors to help us through the 1987season."

Those three seniors are: Kim Ehrhorn, a 5-10 middle blocker from CanonCity, Colorado; Chelle Penner.a 5-11 outside hitter from Aurora, Nebraska andPhyllis Richey, a 5-9 outside hitter from Germantown, Tennessee.

Ehrhorn bring three years of playing experience to the team. As asophomore she ranked first on the team in blocks (143) and second as ajunior (85). An excellent jumper and hitter, Ehrhorn made 203 kills for a .217kill percentage last season.

Penner, has been a consistent starter for the past two seasons. During the1986 campaign, she finished third on the team with 228 kills and 295 digs. Avery versitale player, Penner set up her teammates 61 times last year for a .376assist percentage.

Richey is the only Tennessee native on the 1987 Lady Tiger roster. She willadd depth to the Lady Tiger defense, as she is a very energetic backrowspecialist. Besides her defensive expertise, Richey is a fine outside hitter.Last year she had a .206 kill percentage.

The lone junior on the Lady Tigerroster is Nancy Wolter. She will lendher skills to the MSU blocking game.As a freshman, she ranked secondin blocks with 127, and as asophomore she made 63 blocks. Avery flexible player, Wolter made 183kills and had an assist percentage of.434 during the 1986 campaign.

Sophomores, Clare Dirksen andRhonda Kottke will bring a lot ofplaying experience to the Lady Tigersquad.

Dirksen had little trouble adjustingto the college ranks. As a freshmanshe lead the team with 1197 assistsfor a .343 assist percentage. Anall-round player, Dirksen had thesecond best kill percentage (.218)and dig total (370) on last year'steam.

Kottke saw plenty of action duringher inaugural season with the LadyTigers.

1987 VOLLEYBALL OUTLOOKIn 72 games she made 97 kills, 71 blocks, had 136 digs and accumulated

an assist percentage of .333.Four signees round out this year's Lady Tiger team that is full of depth and

talent.Kara Cronin, a 5-6 setter from Laguna Beach is the first Californian to

play for the Lady Tigers. As a senior at Laguna Beach High School. Croninwas a 1987 first-team all-league member as well as the Most Valuable Playerat the Orange County All-Star game.

Katherine Lehman, 5-11, will be an offensive threat with her middleblocking ability. Lehman was an all-conference and all-divisional pick atRegina Dominician High School in Wilmette, III.

Sarah Tjelemland, a 6-0 hitter from Springfield, III., will lend her talents as amiddle hitter for the Lady Tigers. While attending Rochester High School,Tjelemland was an all-conference selection both her junior and senior years.

Rounding out the new freshman class is Marie Zwolinski, a 5-10 outsidehitter from Tucson, Ariz. Zwolinski has already established herself as anoffensive threat with her fine hitting ability.

"This year's schedule is the toughest ever played by a Memphis State team,"explained Callender. "But, if we are going to get ranked in the top 20, we aregoing to have to play and beat some of the top teams on our schedule."

The Lady Tigers will face two top ten teams, Texas and Brigham Young. As well, the MSU women will find themselves up against four top 25 team:Houston, Rice, Idaho State and Texas-Arlington. Also on the team'sschedule is the University of California-Riverside, a NCAA division two Final

Four competitor. In Metro Conference competition, the

Lady Tigers will play host to Louisville,Cincinnati and defending MetroConference Champion, Florida State. The MSU women will be on the roadfor their bouts with Virginia Tech,Southern Mississippi and SouthCarolina.

"We have established four goals thisseason," Callender explained. "First,to regain a Metro ConferenceChampionship; second, to representour school in the NCAA Tournament;third, to achieve excellence in theclassroom; and, last, to have a greattime growing together as a team."

A new coach, a new game plan, atough new schedule, and newattitude toward perpetuating a winningtradition. With all these ingredients, the 1987 Memphis State Lady Tigervolleyball team is well on the way toit's goals.

99Double Hit Touched Net

Substitution Double Foul/Play Over

Position Foul End of Game or Match

Ace: A serve which directly results in a point because thereceiving team is unable to keep the ball in play.

Assist: A set which is spiked for a point or side out; theassist is credited to the player setting the ball to thespiker.

Attack Pet.: A measure of a spiker's hitting effectivenesswhich is somewhat akin to a baseball batting average; itis derived by subtracting the number of errors from thenumber of kills, and dividing that by the number of spik-ing attempts. A .275 attack pet is excellent while a .350 orabove is outstanding.

Block Solo: A player solely responsible for blocking theball onto the opponent's court (or off an opposing player)for a point or sideout is credited with a block solo; if twoplayers are jointly responsible for the block, they are eachcredited with a Block Assist.

Cross Court Spike: A diagonal spike (left to right orright to left) aimed towards the corner of the opponent'scourt which is farthest from the spiker.

Dig: A save (keeping the ball in play) of a spiked orblocked ball

Free Ball: A ball directed into the opponent's courtwithout being forcefully attacked. Used to keep the rallyalive when a spike is impossible.

Five-One Offense: The predominant offense in collegiatevolleyball which consists of five hitters and one setter, who sets all good passes,

Kill: A spike which results in a point or side out.

Line Spike: A spike aimed down the opponent's sideline.

Off Speed Shot: A ball which is spiked with only afraction of the force typically used for a spike. Occasionaluse of an off speed shot can be effective because it throwsoff defenders' timing—the defenders typically expect afall-strength spike.

One On One Block: Only one blacker faces the spiker, who therefore has an excellent chance for a kill. Someoffensive plays are specifically designed to isolate a hitterin a one-on-one situation.

Tip: Touching the ball with one hand onto the opponent'scourt; mainly used to force defenders to cover court areasinstead of keying on forceful attacks.

Turning The Ball In: A technique used by the outsideblocker to keep a spiked ball from going out of bounds.

Wipe Off Shot: A ball which is intentionally spiked offthe Mocker's hands at such an angle that it will land outof bounds.
