Tigers in Tournament PlayThe Tigers have participated in 16 different tour-naments in fi ve seasons and carry a 42-40 in to the Panther invitational.

Nice To Meet YouThis season, the Tigers face 10 opponents for the fi rst time in program history. Nine of Mem-phis’ fi rst 14 opponents are against teams the Ti-ger Softball program has never played, including a fi rst meeting with Georgia State on Saturday. Memphis is 2-1 in fi rst time meetings this season with wins over Ohio State and Kentucky. The Ti-gers are 42-49 all-time in fi rst-time meetings and 24-24 when a fi rst-time meeting is played at a neutral site.

Veteran-Laden TigersHead Coach Windy Thees has built a 2011 ros-ter than features 11 of 22 players that are juniors or seniors. With that experience comes 742 combined starts of the 16 returning letterwin-ners. Caution: Rough Road Ahead!Memphis faced a tough test to begin the season with the FIU Combat Classic, but the schedule didn’t get any easier from there. The Tigers play 21 of their fi rst 23 games away from Tiger Soft-ball Complex. In the fi rst 23 games, Memphis will face 10 teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, including four of the fi rst fi ve games.

Hummel Among C-USA LeadersAfter one week of the season, Carly Hummel is among the top-fi ve pitchers in C-USA in several statistical categories. Hummel leads the league in wins (3) and in innings pitched (22.2). She sits in the top-fi ve in ERA at 1.24 (5th), opposing batting average at .156 (5th), strikeouts with 19 (3rd) and batters struck out looking with eight (3rd).

Tigers In The Peach StateMemphis has played in Georgia only once in the six year history of the program. In 2009, the Tigers played in the K-Club Classic hosted by Kennesaw State. Memphis went 1-4 in the tour-nament to enter the Panther invitational with the same record in the state of Georgia.

Hummel Tosses No HitterSophomore pitcher Carly Hummel tossed the sixth no hitter in program history on Feb. 11 at the FIU Combat Classic. After throwing four one-hitters in her freshman campaign, Hummel started her sophomore season with her fi rst ca-reer no hitter. Hummel didn’t allow a hit through nine and two thirds innings pitched this season.

Close CallsLast season, Memphis was involved in 16 games decided by a run (31.4 percent) and 36 by three runs or less (70.6 percent). The Tigers were 7-9 in one-run games last year and 15-21 in games decided by three runs or less. Through fi ve games in 2011, the U of M has played in three games that have been decided by one run and Memphis is 1-2 in those games.

Hummel Joins 200K ClubCarly Hummel became just the second Tiger pitcher to reach 200 strikeouts in one season joining Jenna Kubesch who struck out 243 batters in 2007. Hummel is the third Memphis player to reach 200 K’s in a career joining Kubesch (401) and Nicki Johnson (234). Hummel fi nished her freshman campaign with 210 strikeouts and has 19 strikeouts this season to close within six K’s of second place for career strikeouts in program history. Hummel currently owns the school record for strikeouts per game with an average of 8.01.

Three Is The Magic NumberWhen Carly Hummel steps in the pitching circle as a starter, all she needs is three runs of support. With 27 starts in her career, Hummel is 14-2 when the Tiger offense puts three or more runs on the board. Her only losses in which the Tigers scored three or more runs came against Tulsa on March 27 and 28 of 2010.

Quick StartMemphis has scored nine, fi rst inning runs this season. The Tigers topped North Florida 3-0 to open the season and all three runs came in the fi rst inning. Memphis again scored three fi rst inning runs in the second game of the season against DePaul, but dropped that game 6-5. After scoring one run in the fi rst against Ohio State, the U of M scored two runs off a Maddie McKinley two-run shot to take an early lead against Kentucky. When scoring in the fi rst inning this season, Memphis is 3-1.

Tigers Collect First Win Over Ranked TeamThe U of M posted its fi rst win over a ranked opponent in school history with a 7-3 eighth inning victory over No. 22/24 Ohio State. The Tigers had faced 13 ranked programs in the fi ve seasons prior to the Feb. 12 meeting with Ohio State. Memphis had fallen all 13 times with the last game against a ranked opponent falling on Feb. 7, 2009 against No. 3/2 Alabama.

Shifting GearsAfter no stolen bases in the fi rst two games, the Tigers have shifted gears in the last three games having posted six steals. Memphis had one steal against Ohio State and had two against FIU. In game three, Memphis had three steals, two by Maddie McKinley.

Walking In MemphisIn her fi rst four games played, Kailey Kassner drew seven walks to lead C-USA. Kassner drew two walks against DePaul, Ohio State and FIU and another against North Florida.

Tigers Pitching Staff Ranked 20th The Memphis pitching staff finished the 2010 campaign ranked 20th in the nation in ERA with a 1.97 mark. Carly Hummel ranked 41st with a 1.74 ERA. Hummel also ranked ninth nationally in hits allowed per seven innings (3.67) and 48th in the nation for strikeouts per seven innings (8.3).

Versatility Will Be The KeySenior Maddie McKinley made the transition from third base to right fi eld during fall practice and has started two of the fi ve games in right fi eld. McKinley has started three games at third base and freshman Ijiah Hargrove has started once in right fi eld along with Alex Marshall and Ashleigh King.

2011 Preview: Pitchers/CatchersThe visions of grandeur this season begin with the presence of sophomore Carly Hummel, the presumptive ace of the 2011 staff. Hummel im-mediately established herself as a star in the making. A Conference USA, All-Freshman team selection, she posted a 15-10 record with 17 complete games and six shutouts. She also struck out 210 batters, which is the second-highest single-season total in school history, a Memphis freshman record and the third-highest career total in school history.A pair of seniors, in Lauren Carley and Janelle Valle, will provide valuable leadership and boost the depth of the staff along with Australian fresh-man Ellen Roberts.Carley made 17 pitching appearances last sea-son, including four starts. She struck out 47 batters in 52 innings pitched in 2010. She is ex-

pected to slide into the No. 2 starter role behind Hummel.Valle is the only southpaw pitcher on this sea-son’s Tiger staff and her mental make-up and change-of-pace style make her a nice comple-ment to the riseball throwing Hummel and Car-ley. With 60 appearances as a Tiger, Valle is the most senior pitcher on the staff.Senior Keanah Prestridge will handle the staff from her vantage point behind the plate again this season. Prestridge earned the school’s single-season caught stealing record behind the plate last season, throwing out 17 attempted base stealers in her fi rst season behind the dish.Prestridge will likely see the bulk of the innings behind the plate, but freshman Amber Lindahl and junior Nikki Moreno create a healthy com-petition for playing time. Senior Kailey Kassner and freshman Ashley Ford could also see time behind the plate.

2011 Preview: InfieldIn their pursuit of reaching the program’s fi rst NCAA Tournament berth, the 2011 Tigers Soft-ball squad will lean on a wealth of experience and depth within the infi eld.At fi rst base, Jessica Phillips, a Chattanooga, Tenn. native, has logged 80 starts during her

Jordan Richwood • San Mateo, Calif. • PRichwood earned three varsity letters at Hills-dale High School and led the Knights to their fi rst Peninsula Athletic League Bay Champi-onship in 18 years. Richwood posted a micro-scopic 0.55 ERA and allowed only 29 hits in 168 innings pitched for head coach Randall Matheny. Of the 504 batters she retired, Rich-wood recorded 457 strikeouts, which came 13 shy of breaking the all-time single-season California record. She tossed her ninth career perfect game in 2010 and added her 10th and 11th career no-hitters. Richwood is an all-coun-ty and all-state selection and plays for the Sor-cerer Softball Academy.

Kassy Dunn • Simi Valley, Calif. • OF/2BKassy Dunn lettered four seasons as a utility with Grace Brethren High School coached by Norma Skinner. During her 2010 season, she batted .631 with a .958 fi elding percentage, 8 HRs, 28 RBI and a 1.154 slugging percentage. Pitching the bulk of innings for the Lancers, Dunn posted a 0.82 ERA and 151 strikeouts. She threw two no-hitters in the playoffs last season leading Grace Brethren to the state semifi nals, the best fi nish in school history. Dunn is a two-time all-CIF (California Inter-scholastic Federation) and all-area player who was named all-state in 2010.

Breslin Perry • Austell, Ga. • OFPerry lettered three years as a starter for head coach Mark Collins. During her career, she has played outfi eld and shortstop and holds the single-season school records with 18 stolen bases in 2010. Perry holds a .659 career bat-ting average for the Eagles and has scored 54 runs in her career, both school records. Named the region’s player of the year, Perry has also earned all-state (2010) and all-county honors (2007) in her high school career. Perry traveled with the Georgia Knockouts in 2010 and the Georgia Elite in 2008.Sara Pearson • West Chester, Ohio • P/SS

Pearson earned four varsity letters at Lakota East High School for head coach Steve Cast-ner. Pearson led the Thunderhawks to the fi nal four of the Ohio State Tournament in 2010 with 139.1 innings pitched and 222 strikeouts while posting a 0.60 earned run average. She also led the Thunderhawks at the plate, hitting .354 (34 hits out of 96 at bats) and was fi rst on the team in triples, home runs and runs batted in. Pearson earned all-district and all-state honors in 2010 and is a three-time fi rst team all-league selection. As a sophomore, Pearson earned Fort Ancient Valley Conference (FAVC) player of the year honors and was also named Butler County pitcher of the year in 2009.

two-year collegiate career and looks to step up as a team leader this season.Providing depth at the position will come from a pair of freshmen. Southaven, Miss. native Libby Goranson, who lettered six-years as a starter at Southaven High School, and Australian product Ellen Roberts, who led her Australian national squad to three-consecutive championships. While she is primarily the team’s designated player, senior Kailey Kassner can fi ll in at fi rst in addition to her role as a backup catcher. Her big-gest contribution will come with the bat, where she has been hitting with confi dence and power in the preseason. The middle infi eld will be anchored by a pair of Florida natives, junior Alyssa Palmieri (sec-ond base) and senior Heather Mott (shortstop). Palmieri and Mott combined for a total of 78 starts last season, and expect to pick up right where they left off.Sophomores Shanna Brown and Morgan Mosby will be vying for increased playing time in the in-fi eld throughout the 2011 campaign.Senior Maddie McKinley, a 2010 C-USA all-tour-nament selection, may make the transition to outfi eld to aid in replacing 2010 graduate Leigh Rowan. With McKinley’s position change pend-ing, the Tigers used preseason camp to prepare third base candidates Cheyenne Mascarenas and Ijiah Hargrove.Mascarenas, a sophomore, saw time at the hot corner in 17 games last season, while Hargrove, joins the Tigers after becoming one of the most decorated players in Harrison Central High School (MS) softball history.

2011 Preview: OutfieldWith lots of experience returning to the Memphis softball team, hopes are high for a breakthrough season, but one area that might be a little green early on is the team’s outfi eld. Only Alex Mar-shall, and Lelani Bernadino bring experience to this unit from last season, but the return of Kamri Chester from a redshirt season, and mov-ing senior Maddie McKinley from third base to right fi eld will help make this unit a strength as the season goes on. The trio of Marshall, Berna-dino and Chester, will give the outfi eld a speedy and aggressive approach heading into the 2011 season. Bernardino, who has played in every game since arriving on campus in 2009, was a solid No. 2 hitter last season for Memphis, batting .294 with eight doubles and 10 steals. Taking the reins in center fi eld will likely be Chester. The sophomore redshirted last season, but started 32 games for the Tigers as a fresh-man in 2009. Marshall, last season’s starter in center, is coming off of shoulder surgery in the offseason and remains a question mark.Right fi eld remains a question mark, but McKin-ley appears ready for the move to right fi eld. Pro-viding outfi eld depth will be freshman Ashleigh King, a four-time all-region selection at Cor Jesu Academy in St. Louis, Mo. King hit .379 for her career for the Chargers, including .500 her se-nior season.

THE LAST TIME ....WINDY THEES

Head Coach • 6th Year 139-139, 302-231

Hired with the daunt-ing task of starting a soft-ball program from scratch, University of Memphis head coach Windy Thees has stepped up to the chal-lenge. In just fi ve seasons, Thees has built the Tigers into a program that has

continued to show it can compete with any team in the country. Now entering her sixth season in 2011, Mem-phis looks to continue its growth with a squad that returns eight starters, three pitchers and 16 let-terwinners. Six newcomers join Tiger Softball for Coach Thees’ sixth season. In the short fi ve-year history of the Memphis softball program, Thees has compiled a 136-137 (.498) overall record and guided the team to the Conference USA Championship Tournament in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Tigers fi nished seventh in C-USA in 2010 with a 25-26 overall record and 8-15 mark in league play. Coach Thees tutored the Tiger pitching staff to seven single-season pitching records in 2010, including ERA (1.97), opponent batting average (.192), most strikeouts per game (6.62), fewest hits allowed (241), fewest home runs allowed (18), fewest runs allowed (130) and fewest earned runs allowed (98). Carly Hummel highlighted the individual pitching performances with fi ve games of 10 or more strikeouts, including four of the top fi ve strikeout performances in program history. Hum-mel struck out a school record 15 batters against Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State, re-spectively. Hummel tossed the third-best strike-out performance against Saint Louis and the fi fth-ranked came against Wichita State. Memphis pitchers tossed six one-hitters in 2010. Hummel threw four one-hitters and com-bined for another. Lauren Carley threw one and combined for a one-hitter with Hummel. The 2010 season also saw the Tigers ad-vance to the C-USA Tournament semifi nals for the fi rst time in program history after a 5-1 victory over Tulsa in the opening round. In her fi ve seasons at Memphis, Thees’ play-ers have earned eight All-Conference awards, seven all-conference freshman team selections and two NFCA All-South Region selections. This past year, Lelani Barnardino and Vanessa Walle earned Second Team All-Conference USA selection and Carly Hummel was named to the all-conference freshman team. Thees’ players have also found success in the classroom with all 15 of her seniors earning their diploma. In addition, under Thees’ tenure the Ti-gers have earned four CoSIDA/ESPN The Maga-zine All-District selections, 15 NFCA Scholar Athlete selections and four C-USA All-Academic team selections. The softball program has twice produced the U of M’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Former volleyball and softball let-terwinner Melissa Nance was the 2008 Memphis nominee and former pitching standout Jenna Kubesch was nominated in 2007. Kubesch also earned one of 12 C-USA Postgraduate Scholar-ships.
