Hello West Seattle! I am delighted to represent you as your 2010-2011 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Senior Court Queen. I recently completed my

sophomore year at University of Puget Sound as a molecular and cellular biology major. In 2009, I graduated from John F. Kennedy

Memorial High School in Burien. Throughout my four years in high school I was highly involved in the marching and

symphonic band programs, as well as, the fastpitch team, honor societies and community service programs. During my senior year of high school I volunteered at Seattle Children’s hospital, which has influenced my decision to become a Physician Assistant with a pediatric emphasis. The last two years I have been involved with many on campus activities including Alpha Phi Sorority where I have had the opportunity to hold the position of Director of Member Education.

One of the most rewarding experiences I have encountered has come from my opportunity to travel throughout the United

States, the Caribbean and Europe, which included Germany, Austria, France, and Switzerland. Most of my travel experience has been a

result of my two exchange trips in high school, which gave me the opportunity to stay with a host family and open my eyes to a new culture and

lifestyle. My past travels have highly influenced my decision to

study abroad in Cork, Ireland for the 2011-2012 school year and I hope my

future endeavor will continue to help me grow personally and academically.

This summer I look forward to representing the West Seattle Community as Miss West Seattle

Hi-Yu in events across Western Washington along with the rest of the senior and junior courts. I would like to give a special thank you to the Lions Club of West Seattle for representing me last summer as a candidate.

Hello West Seattle and beautiful sunshine! Summer is finally here and I am thrilled to represent you as your 2010-2011 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Princess. I am a 2009 graduate from Holy Names Academy and will now be merging into my junior year of college at the University of Washington, where I hope to major in Mechanical Engineer-ing. I apply for the department this July and am anxious to hear the results.

Over the past year, I have enjoyed looking into and receiving opportunities to become an engineer. I was truly blessedmy 2011 Spring Quarter at the University of Washington when I was admitted to the UW Society of Automotive Engineers Car Formula Team 22. This was the first opportunity for me to experience what it really takes to be a Mechanical Engineer. I am happy to be one of the few girls on the team of 40 people who are building a formula car that will be raced in California in June 2011. I was delighted learning how to use the drills, lathes, and other machinery in the UW ME shop and even got to make my own parts for the car. I am looking forward to seeing our creation being raced this summer!

I have loved being a part of West Seattle Hi-Yu this year. It is an experience that I will never forget. I would especially like to thank the float committee for their hard work in designing and building a beautiful float. I am looking forward to the rest of the summer festival and the American Legion Parade. Special thanks go to the West Seattle Eagles Club for sponsoring me last year when I was a candidate. I can’t wait to share my summer experience with you!

Hello West Seattle! I am honored to represent West Seattle as your 2010-1011 Senior Court Princess. I recently graduated from Holy Names Academy, receiving the Washington State Honors Award as well as the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. Next fall, I will be attending Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida majoring in Marine Sciences. I am very excited for the opportunities I will receive studying marine life in such a beautiful environment. At Holy Names, I participated in the Student Ambassador Program and The National Honors Society. Additionally, I was involved in the Junior States of America (JSA), a region-wide political activism club, and Support Our Troops Club. Outside of school, I am very involved at Kathy’s Studio of Dance, where I participate in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz and volunteer as an Assistant Dance Teacher. At the 2010 recital, I was awarded the Best Friend Award, given to a member of the Senior Dance Company who acts as a friend to all, and is decided upon by the entire company. This year I have been volunteering at the Seattle Aquarium to further my knowledge of marine animals and will also be helping with the 2011 Summer Day Camp program. I am so glad that I got to be a part of West Seattle Hi-Yu this year! I would like to thank all of the people who generously donated their time to make the organization run. I especially want to thank the float crew that created such an eye-catching float, it looks wonderful! I cannot wait to be on it as it drives through the Junction in the American Legion Grand Parade. Finally, I would like to give a special thank you to the American Legion Post #160 for sponsoring me as a candidate last summer. Hope to see you at the West Seattle events.

My name is Taylor Nichols. I am proud to represent you as your 2010-2011 West Seattle Hi-Yu Junior Court Queen. I will be turning 11 this summer and will be in the 6th grade at Holy Rosary School. At school, my favorite subjects are Art, Social Studies and Music. I play soccer and have been a dancer at Kathy’s Studio of Dance for the past 8 years. I especially love Lyrical and being an assistant teacher. The little girls are so much fun to work with. I am interested in being a professional dancer or doing something with fashion, but I would also be happy being a teacher.

I have had a great experience with Hi-Yu so far. I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard on the float. It turned out GREAT! I am looking forward to participating in Seafair’s Torchlight parade at the end of July and seeing our float lit up. I am enjoying meeting other courts at their parades, seeing their floats, and enjoying their festivals.

Being the Junior Court Queen has been an honor and I have already made so many fun memories. I hope to see you at the Pirates Landing in mid July or wave to me at the West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade in late July. I have had a sparkling time this year in Seattle with Hi-Yu.

Hi! My name is Kaitlin Lindell and I am so excited to be able to represent you as your 2010-2011 Junior Court Princess.

I am 11 years old and will be a 6th grad-er at Holy Rosary School this fall. My favorite subjects are P.E., Math, and Computers. I love sports. Basketball is my favorite, but I also play soccer, softball, volleyball and I’m on the swim team at Arbor Heights. When I grow up I would like to be a teacher, attorney or professional basketball player. I would also love to travel the world. When I am not playing sports or in school I like to go on trips with my family, play with my dog

and guinea pig, and spend time with friends.

Being a Hi-Yu Princess has been a dream come true and a great experience for me. I encourage girls between 8 and 11 to try out for the Junior Court. You get to meet new people, make new friends, and wear a beautiful tiara. This summer I am looking forward to all the Hi-Yu events, including the West Seattle American Legion parade and the Seafair Pirates Landing at Alki Beach. I hope to see you there!

Mom are all from West Seattle too! We are so lucky to live in a place where we can go to a sandy beach, a rocky beach, a HUGE park and all of the other fun things our community has to offer!

Being a Hi-Yu Junior Court Princess has been amazing! I have had so much fun participating at the Junction Santa pictures and sleigh rides and the Spring Tea. The West Seattle Rotary Club was chartered October 27, 1947. Rotary is an international organization for business and professional persons united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotarians are persons who look beyond themselves to their community, nation and the world, in short, Rotarians put service above self. We support numerous projects and organizations, which include: WS Food Bank, Annual Holiday Clothing Shopping Spree for disadvantaged school kids, Pencil-Me-In-for-Kids, WS Kiddies Parade, literacy projects, educational scholarships, International Youth Exchanges, Dress-for-Success clothing drive, vocational assistance for developmentally challenged youth and much more. Two of our big fundraisers are the Berry Sales in the mid-summer and the Black-Tie Bingo in the Spring.

The Legion was formed to support veterans and their families. Members volunteer at the Veteran’s Medical Center, the servicemen’s lounge at Sea-Tac, and post Color Guards at memorial services. Orville Rummel Awards are given out each year to an outstanding person of service to the community. Orville helped found the West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival in 1934. Since the charter of American Legion Post #160 on March 22, 1922, the Legion has hosted annual parades. The West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade is on July 24th, so give them a hand as they go by!

Hi-Yu thanks Elaine Durham for Summer Festival Program design

On Sunday, April 3rd 2011, West Seattle Hi-Yu held its annual Spring Tea and Silent Auction at the Hall at Fauntleroy in West Seattle. Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering was the premier sponsor of this event and provided a unique and delicious tea menu. The tasty meal also included contributions from Little Rae’s Bakery, Renaissance Desserts, Sugar Rush Baking Company and West Seattle Thriftway. Our tea was served by a volunteer group of young men from Highline and Sealth High Schools. Guests l istened to the enchanting music of harpist, Madeline Lyons, while placing bids in the Silent Auction and partaking of the wonderful food. Thanks to our emcee, Seafair Pirate “The Marquis” aka Chuck Marcoullier, and the 100+ individuals and businesses that donated their time, goods and services to make this event a great success. Funds raised benefit the Hi-Yu Senior Court Scholarship Program and the West Seattle Hi-Yu Float, representing West Seattle in parades throughout Western Washington. If you would like information on Hi-Yu activities or would like to be a part of the committee to plan next year’s event, please email us at [email protected].

The West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club was founded in 1934 with the purpose of promoting the safe and responsible enjoyment of outdoor activities, conservation of our natural resources, and protection and restoration of our environment and wildlife.

Every year the club sponsors boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 to attend the Washington State Junior Conservation Camp on Orcas Island, where they learn survival skills, fly tying and fishing techniques, current environmental issues, and have a lot of fun. The club also operates the Roger Dahl Rifle Range at the West Seattle Stadium. Its goal is to promote the safe and proper use and care of firearms for hunting and marksmanship. Classes are available as well as participation in leagues. Regular WS Sportsmen’s Club events include fishing outings, Clam Bakes, Salmon Bakes, Kid’s Fishing Derby and more. For information, please visit the club website at www.wssportsmen.org.

West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club

Candidate Sponsoring Service Clubs continued...

The Kids’ Fishing Derby at Seacrest Marina was held on an overcast but pleasant Saturday morning in May this year. Participation was great, with many kids casting their lines for the hungry trout. Watch for this event again next year in the spring. Fishing typically begins at 8am and continues until 11am. Equipment and bait are provided by the West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club for the kids to use, and experienced anglers are there to give advice and assistance. Best of all, it’s absolutely free, and the kids get to keep what they catch! (Donations to the West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club are welcome.)

The fishing derby is open to all kids 12 and under with adult supervision. So get your kids, your neighbor’s kids and prepare to join the fishing fun! For information on the fishing derby and other West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club activities, go to www.wssportsmen.org.

Past and current West Seattle hi-Yu royalty held its annual Order of the White Rose reception at the Fauntleroy United Church of Christ on Tuesday, June 28th. The reception was hosted by our 2010 Senior Court: Queen Georgia Mitchell, Princess Kelly Nealson, and Princess Veronica Pupava and our 2010 Junior Court: Queen Kailin Jo Alexander Spencer and Princess Isabella Carufel. Princess Kaitlin Morgan was away on vacation. Our Emcee for the evening was 2010 Queen Georgia Mitchell. The Order of the White Rose is a women’s sorority composed of past and current West Seattle Hi-Yu royalty and candidates. During the induction ceremony, the 2010 Junior Court were

welcomed into the Order of the White Rose in an elegant candlelight and roses ceremony. Memory books and souvenirs from past festival years were on display. Beautiful memories were shared and cherished. The reception is held annually, the last Tuesday of June, and all women are welcome to attend. If you did not receive an invitation and would like to be added to the White Rose guest list please visit facebook.com/wshiyu and add your contact information. Special thanks to Danette Carufel for organizing the evening and making it possible to honor our royalty.

The Scholarship Program is under a new timeline! Our new Court will be selected during the Spring of 2012. Details on the program are being worked on now by a committee of past Royalty and Hi-Yu members. Many aspects will stay the same. A Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen and two Princesses will be crowned and they will reign over the 2012 Hi-Yu Festival season. The Queen will receive a $2,000 scholarship and the two Princesses will receive $1,000 each. The new queen will represent West Seattle Hi-Yu in the Miss SEAFAIR Scholarship Program in 2013. The Board and membership decided to change the timeline in order to shorten the time commitment required of the girls. Rather than an obligation of two summers, one to be in judged events and one to serve on the Court, we will now have the judged events and Coronation in the spring with the newly crowned court moving right into the Summer festivities. Many other community festivals run their program with this schedule. While you won’t see any candidates this summer selling buttons or riding convertibles in the American Legion Grand Parade, you will still be able to support exceptional young women in our community next spring. Please look for coming information on the revised program and applications on our Facebook page (facebook.com/wshiyu) and through the West Seattle Blog

The 2011 Float theme was selected at the December Holiday meeting last year! While many ideas were presented it was the presentation by Junior Court Princess, Riley Fredricks, entitled “Sparkling Seattle” that caught the attention of voters. Riley actually made a miniature float incorporating her ideas. When asked how she came up with the theme Riley said, “When I thought about the West Seattle float being the last community float in Seattle, I thought about some of the things that make our neighborhood great. We are lucky to live in a place with such a beautiful view of downtown, ferries that take us across the water, and of course, who can forget all of our great places to have coffee and hot chocolate! I am so proud to live in West Seattle and these were a few of my favorite things.”

In the weeks that followed, a smaller group of volunteers gathered weekly to discuss the design ideas and constructability of each item. Steve Fischer, a very talented West Seattle resident and volunteer of Hi-Yu for the past 5 years, transformed the concepts into drawings from which to work. As a result a float was constructed to look like a Washington State Ferry, with a Seattle skyline in the background – complete with Farmer’s Market, tall buildings, Space Needle, and Viaduct! The Junior Court sits on chairs made to look like coffee cups, while the Senior Court stands on deck of the ferry.

This year we give a huge thank you to the Bills Family. Queen Kelsey, dad Kelly, and mom Kim took on the task of coordinating work parties, building many of the components of the float, driving the float to parades, AND, because the float still does not have a storage location, keeping the float in their yard. This year we have not been able to locate a business with access to a building that can house a float temporarily. We still need this ASAP, so if you have a location please contact us at [email protected] or facebook.com/wshiyu. Thank you to all the Junior and Senior Court families, friends, and Hi-Yu members who constructed, painted, glittered, and attached decorations. The guidance of dedicated Hi-Yu member, Karen Haynes-Palmquist, was much appreciated. We are also grateful to everyone who helps to transport, unload, load and prepare the float, walk the parade, carry banners, chaperone royalty and much, much more! THANK-YOU!

The transformation from idea to finished product is always magical. The float is already winning awards and is a crowd pleaser. Come and see for yourself at the American Legion Grand Parade on July 23rd at 11am.

2011 West Seattle Hi-Yu Community Float

Greetings West Seattle!

My name is Marianne Unite, and I am the 2011 West Seattle Hi-Yu Button Design Winner. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2010, and am currently a first year nursing student at the University of Washington obtaining my Bach-elor of Science in Nursing. I currently work in West Seattle at Life Care Centers of America as a nursing

assistant, and as a Biology tutor at South Seattle Community College.

I am also the sister of 2003 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Senior Court 1st Princess Julianne and this year’s 2011 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Senior Court Princess Rosemarie.

When my younger sister Rosie asked me to come up with a button design for the theme “Sparkling Seattle”, I was really excited because there are so many things that make Seattle such a great place to live. Yet, as Rosie and I brainstormed for ideas, we always returned to sketching out the skyline view of Seattle that is seen from our very own Alki Beach. West Seattle has been my family’s home for over 25 years, and definitely is a gem of its own. With its many viewpoints, boating docks, parks, and the retail core “The Junction,” there is always somewhere my friends, family, and I can go to have a great time.

There is no question that this year’s Hi-Yu theme “Sparkling Seattle” refers to our West Seattle community, and I am very honored that my button design was selected this year.

Once again it’s time for The Seattle Seafair Pirates lay siege to our fair West Seattle community as they storm the beach at the annual Seattle Seafair Pirates Landing at Alki. The Pirates will arrive on Alki to pillage and plunder during the Hi-Yu Summer Festival and “Kick-Off” the annual Seattle Seafair events. The action-packed day starts at 10:00 AM and will offer family fun with entertainment, food, and craft booths.

“The cutthroat Seafair Pirates crew has made a deal with their new Captain Kidd – and are comin’ to collect the bounty they left behind last year!” Avast, the Seattle Seafair Pirates will sail in from the seven seas and land on the beach between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. Don’t be gettin in their way! The stage will be there ta welcome ye and they be bringin some local bands around 11 am and will give ye a day full o wild piratical merriment. Yer be singin’ those sea shanties! Ready, Aim, Fire! The merchants will be puttin out their finest wares startin at around 9:30 AM and ye can shop, eat and dance along with the Pirates throughout the day! A Special Surprise: The presentation of the refurbished “MOBY DUCK”! As you may have heard, last year the Duck was destroyed by a fire. The Duck has been rebuilt, sporting a new paint job and powered “green” by a new engine that runs on propane!

Don’t be forgettin’ that the first 500 kids (starting @ 10:30 am) will get a free toy pirate kit ta take home. Have your little pirates come dressed fer the occasion and visit the Kiwanis tent so they can be part of a Pirate look-a-like contest to win some booty sponsored by the West Seattle Kiwanis club.

Seafair and West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty will make an appearance. Stop by the West Seattle Hi Yu booth and pick up a free West Seattle Hi Yu Summer Festival Souvenir Book with all the scheduled events. While there, support Hi Yu by buying this year’s festival theme button “Sparkling Seattle”.

The excitement builds as the time for the landing approaches. Around noon, when you see the SFD Fireboat spraying water and the flotilla of boats nears the beach and the “Yankee Clipper” Sea Scout Sailing Vessel near by, its’ cannons banging away during the “battle”, you know the pirates are very close. The Seafair Pirates will “Hit” the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army Reserve.

Stroll the Alki promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach. Come join us for a great day at the beach! For more information, see the West Seattle Hi-Yu site at www.facebook.com/wshiyu or the Seattle Seafair Pirates at www.seafairpirates.org.

Event Overview: In 1983, West Seattle merchants were looking for opportunities to promote the Junction and bring in more business, so a local business owner organized the first Junction Merchants' Sidewalk Sale. Well-received, the sale continued year after year and became an annual Junction celebration. To this modest community event, music and activities were added and today it is renowned as the West Seattle Summer Fest - voted by Herald News readers as their favorite annual event. West Seattle SummerFest now includes two music stages, beer gardens, hundreds of artist and craft booths, family fun activity areas and over 100 local merchants participating in a weekend festival celebrating community. Producing Organization: West Seattle Summer Fest is brought to you by West Seattle Junction Merchants and produced by West Seattle Junction Association, a non-profit organization of friendly business owners located in the heart of the West Seattle Junction. The mission of the West Seattle Junction Association is to develop, encourage, and promote activities that enhance a healthy economic, social and environmental climate for the West Seattle Junction community. The Hiawatha Community Center is proud once again to present the annual Hi-Yu Concert in the Park. Weather permitting the West Seattle Big Band will present a concert of big band favorites for your listening pleasure. So bring out your lawn chairs, pack a picnic basket, and come out and enjoy the tunes, on the East lawn of the park, behind the field house.

The West Seattle Big Band is proud to be a part of this annual event. Many of the members of the band are alumni of West Seattle High School and look forward to this fam-ily event. The band

performs year round at venues throughout the Seattle area, but the concerts in their own backyard are the most fun.

The West Seattle Big Band regularly donates earnings from performances to school music programs in West Seattle, as well as loaning equipment, and providing performances for fund raisers. The band performs at weddings, parties, and special events throughout the year, but also sets aside time to donate performances for the community.

The band is under the direction of Donn Weaver, with vocals by Stephanie Cortes. You can reach band manager Jim Edwards at (toll free) 1-877-632-9135. Check out westseattlebigband.com for schedule and booking information.

On Saturday July 24th at 11:00 AM the American Legion Post 160 will start the West Seattle Parade along California Ave., beginning at SW Lander St. and continuing south 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmunds St. Highlights of the parade will include the All City Marching Band, which is made up of students from all over the Seattle School District. The Kennedy HS band will also attend and many local students are a part of that school.

An exclusive to the West Seattle parade, the Seattle Police Motorcycle Drill Team will be hosting the Vancouver BC Police Motorcycle Drill Team. This is the only appearance they make in the Seattle area. With the high precision Seattle team and the high speed Vancouver team, it is a rare treat and we are fortunate to have both of these wonderful organizations perform together.

The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard taking your community float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities throughout the Puget Sound region. Keep buying those Hi-Yu buttons!

In addition to many local groups and businesses who will be participating, SEAFAIR will be sending the SEAFAIR Princesses, along with the SEAFAIR Pirates and Clowns.

Hello West Seattle! I would like to thank you for your support to the West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival Organization as we enter another fun filled summer! I am honored to represent our wonderful community in the 2011 Seafair Scholarship Program for Women.

This fall I will enter my Junior year at the University of Idaho where I am majoring in interior design with minors in Architecture and Dance. Although my course load was heavy, I am pleased to say I made the dean’s list again this semester. I am looking forward to taking more design classes this fall.

Since returning home from school, I have been volunteering with the Union Gospel Mission’s women and children’s shelter, “Hope Place.” It has been an amazing experience getting to know the women’s stories and to see their faith develop.

West Seattle Hi-Yu has been a wonderful experience that I will never forget! I look forward to representing the fabulous organization and West Seattle this summer and hope to see you all at the American Legion Grand Parade!
