The 2002 Summer Festival Button Design was chosen from a number of submittals to our annual contest. G.M. “Jerry” Blaustein sketched the winning design (above) and received a $50 award (which he donated back to Hi-Yu) and the opportunity to ride in a car behind the Hi-Yu festival float in the West Seattle Grand Parade. Jerry, a realtor for Prudential NW Realty in Jefferson Square, has designed other Hi-Yu festival buttons in the past. If you would like to try your hand at designing next year’s festival button or want to give suggestions for the 2003 festival theme, float design, or event ideas, visit our website at www.hiyu.com or call us at (206) 932-3345. You are also invited to join us at any of our general meetings (the first Monday of every month and every Monday in July) at the West Seattle Senior Center. Meetings begin at 7:00 PM.

The theme of the 2002 Hi-Yu float is “Fun in the Sun.” Franklin High School student, Danielle Shea, came up with the concept and it was brought to life by designer Dan Carver of Marysville. Float chairman, Tim Winston, and a band of assemblers (including Rebecca Love, Julie O’Brien, and Sarah Ryer from the Franklin Key Club) built the float in approximately 8 weeks. The float features the senior court standing on Alki Beach in front of the Alki Point Lighthouse. In the background is a city skyline with a ferry crossing Elliott Bay. The front of the float holds the junior court sitting on logs around a bonfire. Styrofoam, papier-mache, insulation board, wood, fabric, and pounds of glitter were used to create these scenes. The float, along with our junior and senior courts, represent our community in 14 Puget Sound area parades from Sequim to Issaquah. This would not be possible without the dedication of many volunteers. Consider giving to your community with your time, talents and ideas during this next year. Contact us ([email protected] or 932-3345) and let us know of your interest.

Namaste West Seattle! My name is Eliza Junkerman and I am your 2002 First Princess. I graduated from Franklin High School this year and I will be attending Western Washington University this fall where I plan to study Psychology with an interest in forensic science. I work in the heart of the Alaska Junction at the best fitness club in the state, Urban Fitness. I have been working there for over a year and a half as a receptionist, and have recently become an aerobic kickboxing instructor as well. Yep, that’s right, a tiara and a fantastic left hook, watch out! The past months have been full of planning to make this summer the best Hi-Yu has had, and I am excited that it is time for the sun to shine and the clouds to part, so that our float can participate in festivals around Western Washington. Whether you’re at the Concert in the Park or watching the Grand Parade, I encourage you to take part in our community festival and join us in the sun this summer! Finally, I would like to thank my parents, Nancy Hallberg and Peter Junkerman, my little (only in age) brother, Per Junkerman, Urban Fitness staff and members, Stacey, Dacia, Kitty, Rebecca, Katy, Kristin, Natalie, Sara, Naomi, Kalli…. Quick somebody stop me before I take over Veronica’s space! Thank you to everyone that supported me by buying a button or being a smiling face in the crowd, it means more to me than you know.

Second Princess - Veronica Walker

2002 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Senior Court Royalty

Hello West Seattle! My name is Veronica Walker and I am honored to be your 2002 Second Princess. I graduated from Seattle Lutheran High School in 2001 and will be a sophomore at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon this fall, where I play soccer and am a psychology major. I plan on becoming a high school counselor or psychologist. This past year I had the opportunity to volunteer as a Young Life leader for McMinnville High School, which I plan to continue during the next three years. I will also continue playing soccer and will serve as a resident advisor. In addition to Hi-Yu activities this summer, I get to work and take a vacation with my family. Being a part of Hi-Yu has been an amazing experience thus far which will only get better. This year is just the beginning of my involvement in this festival and in our community. I look forward to being a part of the flourishing of West Seattle. I would like to thank my family, friends, clubs, organizations, and above all, Jesus Christ for all of the support, encouragement, love, and time given to me.

Hello West Seattle! My name is Megan Winston and I am honored to be your 2002 West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen. I remember going to see the Hi-Yu court on their float every year as a little girl, and this summer I am excited to be able to fulfill this community role. I graduated from high school and Highline Community College in 2001 and have spent this year adventuring. I’ve found myself everywhere from joining the relief effort at Ground Zero in New York, to being part of an arts group touring high schools in twenty states. I feel that my adventures are just beginning as I look forward to joining the School of Drama at the University of Washington this coming fall. In the meantime, I’ll be busy serving as Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu, representing our neighborhood at festivals around Western Washington. I’ll also be running for Miss Seafair and working part time in the communications department of the Seattle Repertory Theater. As our own summer festival draws near, I invite you to join me in celebrating this community. My hope for this summer is that events such as the Seafair Pirates landing, Hi-Yu Bowling Tournament, and Junction Merchants Street Fair would be more than just a day in the sun, but also a vehicle to unify and enhance the unique character of this community. I encourage you to stretch out a hand to a stranger and fellow community member as you enjoy the summer activities! I’d like to say a special thank you to everyone! First to the someone who has been constantly faithful and who has made all of this possible: Jesus Christ; to my parents for their everlasting support and encouragement (oh, and Jay and Jill for allowing themselves to be dragged to countless Hi-Yu events), to my amazing, wonderful, marvelous court (Eliza and Veronica, I love you guys!), to all the hard working Hi-Yu members, and to you, the West Seattle Community. May the festivities begin!

Join us as we bring Hi-Yu’s “Fun In The Sun” theme indoors for the 2002 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Coronation. This year’s program will be held at Chief Sealth High School on Sunday July 21st at7:00pm. In her fourth year as Director, Tiara Johnson has joined forces with former judge Annette Champoux and several other volunteers to make this year’s program one you will not want to miss! The Coronation is the final phase of a long event-filled summer for our candidates. In June they met their sponsors, penned an essay, and were inducted into the Order of the White Rose. In July they were visible at many community events, including the Seafair Pirates Landing at Alki, the Junction Merchants’ Street Fair, Concert in the Park at Hiawatha, Hi-Yu Bowling Tournament. In addition, they participated in an interview with this year’s program judges, followed by an open reading of the essay they wrote in June. All of these events are designed to give the judges insight into the candidates’ personalities, and to see how they contribute to our community and festival. We are excited to have two new Mistresses of Ceremonies joining us this year. Christine Chen of KCPQ-13 Morning News and West Seattle resident and theater arts aficianado Patricia Britton. Their sparkling personalities will keep the program lively, while working together ensures that everything will move right along as the show progresses. The tone will be set with the spectacular opening number, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, choreographed by Auburn Scallon. Although none of our candidates were even born yet when this song debuted, Cyndi Lauper’s greatest hit remains popular among all generations and embodies the spirit of the Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Scholarship Program. Following the opening number, the candidates will demonstrate their talent, speaking, and presentation skills. In between judged categories, the audience will be entertained by the current Senior Court, as they present their talents. We are also proud to feature Laura Blue, Miss Burien 2002, who will be performing the talent number she presented at the 2002 Miss Washington competition. In addition to the selection of the Senior Court for 2002-2003, each of the following awards will be presented to the candidate who meets the highest level of qualification based on the individual award’s criteria:

Academic Achievement Award - $100 - Sponsored by Rebar and Associates is based on cumulative grade point average, letters of recommendation from schools and instructors, and overall participation in their chosen field of study.

Community Service Award is awarded for volunteer service to the community through individual activities and participation in charitable events on a volunteer basis.

Creative Expression / Talent Award is awarded to the candidate exhibiting the highest level of talent, poise, and presentation during this coronation event.

Entreprenurial Award - Sponsored by Doris and Peter Richards is awarded to the candidate who has started her own business or will attend an acreditted business school with a business degree as her goal.

Spirit of Hi-Yu Award - Sponsored by Illusions Hair Design is awarded for enthusiasm and attendance at all official Hi-Yu summer festival events as well as for fund-raising through button and ticket sales.

Miss Congeniality - $100 - Sponsored by Eliza Junkerman (2001 Recipient) is awarded to the most congenial helpful, and supportive candidate in this year’s program, as selected by her fellow candidates

The candidate selected as Queen will reign over the 2003 Hi-Yu Summer Festival, and will receive a $1200 scholarship. She will also be representing West Seattle Hi-Yu in the 2003 Miss Seafair Scholarship Program, as 2002 Queen Megan Winston will be doing on Tuesday July 23. The two candidates selected as 1st and 2nd Princess for the 2003 Festival will each receive a scholarship of $750. Two Hi-Yu Ambassadors will also be chosen to fill-in for court members when they are unable to attend events or parades and will each be awarded a $200 scholarship.

We hope you will attend the coronation to show your support for these exceptional young women who have served their community this summer and to honor our current court and thank them for the outstanding job they have done this past year. Lights, Camera, Action!

Laura is an eleven-year-old fifth grader at Lafayette Elementary School. Her favorite classes include: art, reading, science, and mathematics. She is an active participant in the school choir, and has experimented in acting. Laura also enjoys her ballet and tap classes at Burien Dance Theatre, swimming, biking, family vacations, and spending time with her friends and older sister, Sarah. Laura wanted to be a part of Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu so that she could better represent her community at other community events. Being Junior Court Queen, Laura is proud in fulfilling her duties, and is having a once-in-a-lifetime experience of which she will never forget.

Tessa is 11 years old and attends Westside Elementary School. Her favorite subjects are reading, creative writing, and PE. In her spare time, Tessa loves to dance. She has been taking ballet, jazz, and tap lessons for seven years and was recently promoted into the Junior Dance Company at Kathy’s Studio of Dance. During the fall and spring Tessa competes in soccer and likes to play forward. This winter she took up snowboarding and was very disappointed when the snow melted. At home, Tessa enjoys training her new dog, Cocoa, working on her half-completed club house, and rollerblading along Alki beach. She is also reading the Harry Poter series to her little brother Jason. When she grows up, Tess dreams of becoming an author and a marine biologist. But in the short term she is looking foward to middle school and the opportunity to learn a foreign language and further develop her writing and computer skills. Tessa’s experience as the Hi-Yu Junior Court 1st Princess has been fun and rewarding. She has especially enjoyed interacting with young children at events like the Hiawatha Halloween Party and Spring Egg Hunt. Tessa looks forward to an exciting summer of visiting communities throughout the Puget Sound area.

Morgan is nine years old and attends Tilden school. She is in the 3rd grade and the oldest of three sisters. Her favorite classes are science, art and history. After school she loves to go swimming, ice skating, play softball and visit with her friends. Morgan also enjoys pet sitting, baking and the cleaning up afterwards. She plans on becoming a veterinarian or a reporter after she finishes college. Morgan was thrilled when she was crowned Hi-Yu Junior Second Princess. It has been a wonderful experience for her to get involved with the community and make new friends at the same time.

The Junior Court participates in Hi-Yu events throughout the summer festival, rides on the float with the Senior Court in community parades in the Puget Sound area, and is involved in other community events going on around West Seattle. The pageant process includes completion of an application, a candidate interview the morning of the pageant, and then attending the coronation at the Fun Festival. Judging is based on personality, friendliness, and an enthusiasm for Hi-Yu. The pageant is open to West Seattle girls, 6 to 10 years of age. Applications are available at Hiawatha Community Center. Hiawatha Community Center is one of twenty-four community centers operated by Seattle Parks and Recreation. Located in the heart of the Admiral District in West Seattle, it offers a wide array of programs and special events. Some annual activities provided by Hiawatha include the Spring Egg Hunt on the Saturday before Easter, the Kid’s Fun Festival on the third Friday in July, the Mediterranean Fantasy Festival on the third weekend in July, and the Halloween Carnival in October. Each quarter of the year, classes and special events are offered for you and your family. Before and after school care, gymnastics, dance, basketball, track, volleyball, and day camps are just some of the programs available for youth. Adult classes include dance, yoga, T’ai Chi, and tennis. To request a copy of our quarterly brochure, please call us at (206) 684-7441 or stop by the center. Sports fields, lighted running track, tennis courts, wading pools, batting cage, and a children’s play area are available just outside the front door. Inside there is a gym, an auditorium with stage, a weight room, a fitness center, game room, and meeting room. In its leadership role, the Hiawatha Advisory Council plans, organizes, funds, and operates programs in the center and on the playfield. You and your family are invited to enjoy the recreation activities at Hiawatha. If you would like to join other like- minded citizens and the professional staff at Hiawatha with the development and operation of programs, you are invited to join the council. Public support is an essential element of the Council.

Saturday July 6th, 200211:00am to 5:00pm

Alki Beach Promenade

The Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates will once again lay siege to our fair West Seattle community when they storm the beach at the annual West Seattle Hi-Yu Pirate’s Landing at Alki Beach. They will arrive on Alki to pillage and plunder during the Hi-Yu Summer Festival and “Kick-Off” the annual Seattle SEAFAIR events. The action-packed day starts at 11:00 AM and will offer family fun and entertainment until 5:00 PM. Stage shows featuring local bands will entertain throughout the day. “Miles From Chicago”, a Rhythm & Blues Band, wowed everyone last year and will headline the afternoon again this year. Back also is the “Swashbuckler Beach Vault”, a US Track & Field sanctioned NW Regional Championship Pole Vaulting competition sponsored by the Willamette Strider’s Track Club. Vintage Chevrolet Corvettes from the Tacoma Classical Glass Corvette Club will be on display. SEAFAIR and West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and this year’s candidates will make an appearance. Kid’s will love participating in the Pirate Look-Alike contest sponsored by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, with great prizes. Enjoy the food provided by different vendors as you stroll the Alki promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach. Lest we not forget the main event, The Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates! The excitement builds as the time for the landing approaches. While the tide

dictates the actual landing time, around noon, when you see the “Yankee Clipper” Sea Scout Sailing Vessel sailing near by and its’ cannons banging away during the “battle”, you know the pirates are very close. The SEAFAIR Pirates will “Hit” the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army Reserve. This year’s Captain Kidd, Bob Gazewood, will be leading the pirates in their landing on the beach at Alki, to officially start this summer’s SEAFAIR celebrations and to take over the city. They’ll have some chests of treasure and plunder to share with their little pirate mateys, too. This year should be spectacular. Remembering what has happened in past years, what fiendish tricks could the Pirates have up their sleeve for this special event? Come join us for a great day at the beach! For more information, please call the West Seattle Hi-Yu information line at (206)932-3345 or visit us at www.hiyu.com.

The West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club was founded in 1934 with the purpose of promoting the safe and responsible enjoyment of outdoor activities, conservation of our natural resources, and protection and restoration of

our environment and wildlife. Every year the club sponsors boys and girls between the ages

of 12 and 16 to attend the Washington State Junior Conservation Camp on Orcas Island, where they learn survival skills, fly tying and fishing techniques, current environmental issues, and have a lot of fun. The club also operates the Roger Dahl Rifle Range at the West Seattle Stadium. Its goal is to promote the safe and proper use and care of firearms for hunting and marksmanship. The range holds Hunter Education as well as Rifle Marksmanship classes and

participates in rifle and pistol leagues including 4 Junior League matches each year. The range has seen at least one of its members go on to shoot in competition at the 1982 Summer Olympic Games. Regular events include fishing outings, Clam Bakes, Salmon Bakes, the Kid’s Fishing Derby, and more. For more information, please contact Jerry Mascio at 937-3614.

It’s early Sunday morning. The city is still quiet. Birds are singing and the fish are hungry. It’s the perfect time to fish! On Sunday, July 14th, be prepared to be awoken by your young, enthusiastic anglers for the annual Kids’ Fishing Derby down at Seacrest Marina on Harbor Avenue. Fishing and festivities begin at 6:00am and continue until 10:00am, when the prizes and ice cream are bestowed upon the children by the 2001 West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and 2002 Candidates. Best of all, it’s absolutely free! Everyone is welcome to fish in the trout pond and poles will be provided. More experienced fishermen may desire to attempt to fish off the pier, and a limited number of poles will be available for pier fishing. The fishing derby is open to all kids 13 and under with adult supervision. So get your kids, your neighbor’s kids (hey what a great activity for kids’ clubs!) and prepare to join in the fishing fun! Call Jerry Mascio (206) 937-3614, for more information.

Bring your picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs, and settle in for the awesome sounds that can only come from a big band. Weather permitting, on Tuesday July 16th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, the West Seattle Big Band will perform some of your favorite Swing Era music along with a mix of Jazz and Blues including Vocals. This will take place on a stage set up on the East Lawn, behind the Hiawatha Field House. Now entering their seventh year, the West Seattle Big Band can be found performing at many locations in West Seattle on a regular basis. The band can be heard the fourth Friday of the month at the West Seattle Senior Center. They also perform at functions and events throughout the Seattle Metro area. The West Seattle Big Band was formed in the Spring of 1996 to promote the performing arts at West Seattle High School. At that time the band was made up entirely of alumni from West Seattle. Since then about half of the original alumni have stayed on and other alumni have joined, along with community members who have helped to fill out the ranks. The Band continues to support music education in the schools, by performing at fund raising concerts, benefits and auctions. The band also sets aside half it’s earnings for distribution to area schools. The band is an eighteen piece big band, playing swing favorites from the libraries of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glen Miller, and Benny Goodman, along with numerous jazz favorites from Maynard Ferguson, Charlie Parker, Stan Kenton and Charles Mingus, just to name a few. The West Seattle Alumni in the band range from the class of 1964 to

1986. The Director is Donn Weaver, retired music teacher from West Seattle High School. If you are interested in booking this band, or for more information, you can contact Jim Edwards toll free at 1-877-632-9135 or visit www.westseattlebigband.com

The Walker Rock Garden is a showpiece of inspired whimsy, and a terrific illustration of the principle that anyone can become an artist. It was built by Milton Walker and his wife Florence in the back yard of their West Seattle home during off-hours between 1958 and 1980. A machinist at Boeing, Milton Walker was fascinated by rocks collected on hikes with his family; his earliest stonework dates from 1943. Creating the garden gradually became an obsession with Milton, an untutored genius whose baroque and colorful creations soon filled most of his property, situated on a green hillside overlooking Puget Sound. Milton Walker cut and fitted virtually all these stones himself. He loved the textures and colors of rock, and devoted his spare time to presenting them in novel and contrasting ways. The garden grew like topsy, with never a plan committed to paper; its unifying theme was the beautiful patterns revealed in the stones, and the playful arrangement of building materials into intricate patterns. These materials--many-hued agate, rough cobblestones, big chunks of translucent rose quartz, eroded sandstone, rough bubbly magma, glossy black obsidian, fragments of colored glass and tile--are handsomely set off. Lush plantings, a shady patio, and the splashing fountain in the center, together orchestrate a restful mood in the midst of busy and complex layers of stonework. The garden, located in the back yard of the Walkers’ private home, is maintained to a superb standard. The public may visit this West Seattle wonderland during the summer season, by appointment only. To set up an appointment, call (206) 935-3036.This information and more, as well as photos, can be found at: http://www.speakeasy.org/~docschlk/kich9.htm

Walker Rock GardenThe Alki Monument

In 1851, Alki Point was a flat, sandy spot which extended a half mile into Puget Sound from hills to the east in west central King County. In November of 1851, the Denny Party landed there from the schooner Exact to form a settlement which later developed into the City of Seattle. Referred to as the birthplace of Seattle, this is the city’s Plymouth Rock. In fact, it has a piece of the historic rock in its base. The monument (which can be found at the intersection of Alki Avenue Southwest and 63rd Avenue Southwest) was given to the city in 1905 by Lenora Denny, daughter of Arthur Denny.

The Statue of LibertyThe Statue of Liberty, a seven foot replica of the original “Liberty Enlightening the World” in New York City, was a gift from Reginald H. Parsons and the Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 1952. It is located at the beach 2700 block of Alki Avenue Southwest. Vandals stole Liberty’s torch-bearing arm in April, but the missing appendage was returned and the 1950-vintage piece has been restored. The statue has become such a symbol of liberty and courage that it became a place to mourn, to reflect, and to leave mementos after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Alki Point LighthouseThe first lighthouse was erected in 1887 on wood scaffolding. Rebuilt in 1910, the automated light can be seen for 15 miles. The lighthouse is located at 3201 Alki Ave SW and is open between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Tours are offered noon to 4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Reservations for special events at the

lighthouse or tours can be made by calling the U.S. Coast Guard at 217-6120.

Alki Bathhouse The Historic Alki Bathhouse was built in 1911 as a huge bathing and recreational pavilion. The building contained dressing rooms, locker facilities, a small theater, large promenade deck and a gymnasium. As many as 20,000 people would take the ferry to Alki to enjoy the frigid water and picnic near the beach. Over the years the Bathhouse has been used for many recreational activities. After W.W.II the building was demolished and a smaller facility was built. The new Bathhouse became an artist community that has been thriving for over 30 years. The Bathhouse pottery studio offers pottery classes for all ages. The painting studio continues to offer a place for the public to paint throughout week.

When: Saturday July 20th, 10:30 amWhere: Intersection of Oregon St & California Ave

Decorate your bike, trike (no motorized vehicles allowed), pet, baby sister or brother! Dress up as if it was Halloween, bring your best smile and join the fun at the West Seattle Kiddies Parade, sponsored by the West Seattle Rotary Club. The fun starts at 10:30 am with sign-in and pictures. There will be treats for parade participants. The Kiddies Parade starts at 11:00 am, right before the American Legion’s West Seattle Grand Parade. Day care groups, Cub Scout troops, Brownies, Indian Guides, Princesses and YOU are encouraged to enter. If you have any questions, please call Shirley Clough (206) 246-3161.

On Saturday, July 20th, at 11:00 AM, the American Legion Post #160 will begin the annual West Seattle Parade along California Avenue, starting at Admiral Way and continuing south for 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmonds Street. Some highlights of the parade will include the SEAFAIR Pirates, All City Marching Band (made up of students from all over the Seattle School District), The Lake City Vigilantes, and the SEAFAIR Princesses, who are vying for the title of Miss SEAFAIR 2002 -- not to mention the 2002 West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival Float and Royalty! We anticipate having the King County Police Honor Guard to lead the parade. The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard the past two months taking your Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities, including Tacoma’s Daffodil Festival float, the SEAFAIR float, and the Port Orchard Fathoms of Fun float. Keep buying those Hi-Yu buttons! The West Seattle Parade was started by the American Legion Post #160 in 1934 by Post Commander Orville Rummel. He was also instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu Association, and in 1984 he created an annual award that is given to a community member each year for outstanding community service. Sadly, Orville has now passed away, but the legacy he has created will live on for generations to come. Be sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award winner at the beginning of the parade.

The renovation of West Seattle High School is right on schedule and will open in September The West Seattle High School Foundation was formed to raise extra funds for such things as a science greenhouse, school-wide computer network, lighting, sound, rigging, and curtains for the auditorium, artwork, repointing of the outside brickwork, and more. Your generosity will help to make West Seattle High a world-class facility. Check the Foundation website at www.wshsfoundation.org or call Shirley Tupper at (206) 933-0551. The new West Seattle High School campus is scheduled to open in September 2002. In 2001, the Alumni Association gave over $37,000 in scholarships, some to students who have been successful in pursuing further education and of course some to graduating seniors from West Seattle High School. This year they gave about $50,000 in scholarships to 19 students: 5 to graduating seniors and 14 to ongoing students. Five of these ongoing students are now in their final college year and have had their tuition paid through this scholarship for a full four years. The Alumni Association is still looking for any unwanted yearbooks. Call Betty Marks Broughton at (206) 932-6583 if you find one you would like to donate. If you attended West Seattle High and are not receiving the Alumni Edition of the Chinook, that means the Association does not have your address. You can contact Membership Chairman Chris King at (206) 938-1937 or [email protected]. The paper goes out to anyone whose addresses we have. If you know of Chinooks being delivered to people no longer at the address or who are now deceased, please let Chris know.

The oldest federally-chartered veterans organization in the United States was chartered 27 August, 1918. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a community service organization dedicated to the needs of the veterans and their families. Direct community involvement always has been and will continue to be a VFW priority. The VFW was the first veterans’ organization to adopt the poppy and develop a national distribution campaign. For more than 75 years, the VFW’s Buddy Poppy program has raised millions of dollars in support of veterans’ welfare and the well being of their dependents. Membership in the VFW is comprised of Veterans of Foreign Wars who have earned an overseas campaign or expeditionary medal and are currently on active-duty, in the Reserves or who have been honorably discharged from the U.S. armed forces. For information regarding membership, or hall rental at 3601 SW Alaska Street, call Pete Polumb at (206) 935-4352.

Since the charter of American Legion Post #160 on March 22, 1922, the Legion has hosted annual parades. The Legion was formed to support veterans and their families. Members volunteer at the VA Medical Center, the servicemen’s lounge at Sea-Tac, and Post Color Guards at memorial services. Orville Rummel Awards are given out each year to the outstanding person of service to the community. Orville helped found the West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival in 1934. Post #160 has been sponsoring Hi-Yu Candidates since the beginning, producing numerous court members. They are the hosts of the West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade on July 20th, so give them a hand as they march by!

Kiwanis is a service organization of women and men, world-wide, who want to improve and help the communities in which they live and/or work. The West Seattle Kiwanis Club was chartered in 1929. The West Seattle Kiwanis Club sponsors Key Clubs at Chief Sealth, West Seattle, and Seattle Lutheran High Schools and Builders Clubs at Madison Middle School and Hope Lutheran which foster leadership and organizational training to create an early interest in community service. WS Kiwanis has been the institutional sponsor of Boy Scout Troop 284 for 57 years and a cub scout pack. They also support Holly Preschool at High Point. This year they continue to sponsor community meals with the help of the West Seattle Help-Line, help at the Hiawatha Community Center Halloween Carnival, serve as ushers at the Easter Sunrise Service at Forest Lawn, fill backpacks with school items for homeless children through “Project Kool”, and assist on several other projects. Over the past ten years, through the proceeds of an annual auction, the club has created and endowed a scholarship at South Seattle Community College and has made major contributions to the music, library, and computer technology programs at West Seattle, Seattle Lutheran, and Chief Sealth High Schools on a rotating basis. This year they sponsored the second annual Golf Tournament and Raffle to benefit all the Schools in West Seattle. The first Saturday in December they will hold their 55th annual Community Pancake Breakfast. The West Seattle Kiwanis Club is an institutional member of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Hi-Yu Summer Festival and continues to support and work with West Seattle Business Improvement Association, schools, organizations, and social services on an as-needed basis. They are supporters of Kiwanis International’s worldwide effort to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) with the help of UNICEF. The introduction of Iodine into our salt supply has all but eliminated IDD in the USA, but in some countries the lack of Iodine in their diet causes mental and physical defects in newborns and the prevalence of thyroid disorders such as goiters. More information on this and other Kiwanis International projects can be found at www.kiwanis.org. Service Projects are determined by its membership, so if you would like to share your ideas and become involved, contact: Warren Lawless at (206) 938-8032, [email protected] http://kiwanis.westseattle.com

One of the oldest projects for the WS Lions is sponsorship of the Sea Scout Explorer Unit in West Seattle and the Yankee Clipper. Another project is a Scholarship program for graduating high school students from West Seattle schools. The Lions are supporters of numerous other activities such as glasses for the needy, aid to the blind, the Lions Eye Bank, the Hearing Foundation, Little League Teams, Diabetes Awareness, Drug Awarness, Youth Exchange, and more. Location: 3003 - 61st Ave SW (one block south of the Statue of Liberty on Alki Beach in West Seattle)

Hours: Thursday - 12:00-6:00 PM Friday - 10:00 AM-3:00 PM Saturday & Sunday - 12:00-3:00 PM

The Birthplace of Seattle / Log House Museum has been open since November 13, 1997 (the 146th anniversary of the landing of the Denny party at Alki Beach) and is located in an authentically renovated turn-of-the-century log structure on Alki Point. This structure was once the carriage house of the “Fir Lodge” estate, one of Alki’s first year-round homes built by prominent Seattlites William and Gladys Bernard. The current exhibit is “The Spirit Returns”, which offers an in-depth perspective on the pioneers and the Duwamish tribe. It presents Duwamish life before and after the settlers arrived, including the legacy of the Point Elliott Treaty of 1855. It tells the story of unrealized promises to the Duwamish who became refugees in their own homeland, and survived against all odds. The pioneer story is told through the eyes of John and Lydia Low of the Alki Landing Party. Low has long been overlooked as a founding father of our city because his family did not remain in Seattle as did the Bells, Borens, Dennys and Terrys. The viewer will follow the Low family’s westward drive on the Oregon Trail to Portland, learn about Low’s role in the settlement of Alki and experience what life was like in the Low family’s original cabin, often referred to as “The Birthplace of Seattle.” Another feature of the museum is “Even in the Darkest Night”, a multimedia exhibit that recalls the days after September 11th, 2001 when area residents laid toys, letters, and personal items at the base of a 1952 replica of the Statue of Liberty in Seattle’s Alki Beach Neighborhood. There will be an exhibit of September 11th memorial artifacts and documents on the first anniversary of the attacks, September 11th, 2002. The museum has become a heritage educational tour destination for school groups and other special interest groups. Other heritage education opportunities available to area schools include traveling heritage trunks and resource libraries, school assembly programs; and a “teen docent” program, which is funded by King County Resources. With the acquisition and preservation of the Log House Museum, the South West Seattle Historical Society now has a home to help fulfill its mission to preserve, interpret, and communicate the heritage of the Duwamish Peninsula and Seattle. The SWSHS is currently involved in Oral History and Memory book projects, which preserve the precious personal and family memories of selected community elders through professional audio, video interviews, and personal memoirs. Currently available for

Log House Museum - Birthplace of Seattle

viewing and purchase are: “West Seattle Memories”, “All Aboard for Luna Park”, and “Memories of Southwest Seattle Businesses”. Make plans soon to visit the Log House Museum, its gift shop, and the commemorative courtyard. People interested in becoming museum docents, special project volunteers, or SWSHS members are encouraged to call Director, Pat Filer at (206) 938-5293. Information can also be found at www.loghousemuseum.org.
