History of Asian GamesAsian Games, the comprehensive sports competition in Asia, is the biggest sports games in Asia, which is held by the member of Asian Sports Federation by turns. Just like such world-wide sports games as Olympics and World Cup, it is held every four years. Far East Games, the predecessor of the Asian Games, was initiated in 1911 by Philippine Sports Association and since then it was held every two years by turns in Manila (Philippines), Shanghai (China), and Osaka (Japan). It was totally held for 10 times until 1937 when the world war broke out. In 1948, people from Asian sports circles who had taken part in Olympics gathered and suggested to resume the Far East Games in a way that it should be held every four years in a larger scale with a new name Asian Games. Then the Asian Games will not clash with Olympics. In March of 1951, the first Asian Games was held in Indias capital New Delhi with only 489 participants. When it came to the eighth Asian Games in 1978, the participants had increased to more than 4000. Nowadays, Asian athletes have become a force to be reckoned with in the world sports world and particularly China is undoubtedly the country with great achievements in Sports and the outstanding one among Asia countries. During the 14th Olympics, Summer Olympics in London in July of 1948, people from sports circles in China and Philippines planned to resume Far East Games, gathering the counterparts from other Asian countries for consultation.

At that time, Guru Sandy, the leading figure in India believed that Far East Games couldnt well represent the competition level of Asian sports and the Asian peoples spirit of union, therefore, he put forward a Asian Games belonging to all the Asian countries. He visited every Asian sports delegation for London Olympics

and invited the representatives from 13 countries such as South Korea, China, Philippines, etc. for a conference to establish an Asian sports organization. During it, the relative documents and regulations were drafted and the first Asian Games was agreed to be held in New Delhi in February 1949. (Because of the incident within India, the Asian Game delayed and went on in 1951.) After the World War II, many Asian countries got rid of colonial domination, regaining independence and liberation and establishing a new regime. As the harm caused by the war faded, people lived a stable life and the sports gradually became popular. Then, the Olympic Games, interrupted for 12 years because of the war, resumed. Under such a historical condition, people in Asian sports circle hoped to set up a unified and authorized Asian sports institution, bringing the Asian sports forward.

Slogan: "Thrilling Games, Harmonious Asia" Host city Guangzhou, China

Nations participating 45 Events Opening ceremony Closing ceremony Main Stadium 476 in 42 sports November 12 November 27 Haixinsha Island

The 2010 Asian Games, also known as the XVI Asiad, are scheduled to take place in Guangzhou, China from November 12 to November 27, 2010. Guangzhou is the second city in China to host the Games after Beijing in 1990.

A total of 476 events in 42 sports will be contested by athletes, making it the largest event in history of the Games. It will also be the last one to have presented such big events, as the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) have enforced new hosting rules for future games, beginning with the 2014 Games. Guangzhou was awarded the right on July 1, 2004, as the sole bidding city. This came after the withdrawal of several cities, from Amman, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul. The games will also be co-hosted by Dongguan, Foshan and Shanwei, the three neighbouring cities.

Organisation BidIn Doha, Qatar on July 1, 2004, Guangzhou was awarded the right to host the Games. This decision came after several other cities withdrew, with their own reasons. Seoul withdrew after considering the short span of time between 2002 and 2010, because South Korea hosted the Games, eight years before, back in 2002 in Busan. Kuala Lumpur were forced to withdrew their bid, after it was boycotted by the cabinet, due to the high cost of hosting the Games, leaving Guangzhou as the sole bidder.

MarketingThe 2010 Asian Games' official emblem was unveiled at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall on November 26, 2006. It is a stylized goat, which, in Chinese tradition, is a blessing and brings people luck. It is also a representative symbol of the host city Guangzhou, which is called the "City of Rams" or "City of the Five Rams". Five sporty rams, dubbed "Le Yangyang," will serve as the mascots of the Games, it was unveiled on April 28, 2008 at Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention and Exhibition Center. The five rams: A Xiang, A He, A Ru, A Yi and Le Yangyang, are a play on Guangzhou's nickname, "City of Goats". Moreover, the Chinese character "yang" or "goat" is also an auspicious symbol because, when read together, the Chinese names of the five rams are a message of blessing, literally meaning "harmony, blessings, success and happiness" .

The mascot design is based on a legend about five immortals who took five rams to Guangzhou, each holding an ear of corn in its mouth. There, the immortals prayed for an end to famine, then flew into the sky as the five rams turned into fossils. The official theme song was released on September 30, 2010, known as "Reunion" (in Chinese "Chongfeng" was composed by Wu Liqun and lyrics written by Xu Rongkai, while the English version was translated by Chen Ning Yang, a ChineseAmerican physicist and his wife Weng Fan. The song was also performed by Sun Nan and Bella Yao Sun Nan then performed it again with Mao Amin for a music video.

CostsSeveral statements were made prior to the official statement about the cost. On March 11, 2005, Lin Shusen of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said the Games "will not cost more than 2 billion", in stark contrast to an earlier report, which had claimed that the cost could exceed 200 billion. However, the actual costs have not yet been revealed. In March 2009, the director of the marketing department of the Games, Fang Daer, claimed that the Games were short of funds, due to lack of sponsorship and the global financial crisis. An informal estimate put the Games' expenditure at about US$420 million and revenue at US$450 million. On October 13, 2010, Mayor of Guangzhou Wan Qingliang officially revealed in a press conference that the total cost of staging the Asian Games and Asian Para Games is about 122.6 billion ($17 billion), with 109 billion spent on infrastructure, 6.3 billion on the venues and some 7.3 billion spent on Games' operation.

Venues

Guangdong Olympic Stadium There are 53 competition venues and 17 training venues available for the Games, with four venues held outside the Guangdong province. These include the Asian Games Town which consists of the Athletes' Village, Technical Officials' Village, Media Village, Main Media Center and International Broadcast Center. Organisers revealed that the total investment is over 15 billion. Of them, 11 competition venues and one training venue are newly built, while the rest are renovated. All competition venues use after the opening ceremony bar football competition, which kicked off on November 7, 2010. On April 19, 2009, organisers chose Haixinsha Island, along with Pearl River as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies, the only venue which not serve as purpose for competition.

Torch relayTwo torch designs were short-listed in September 2009 for the 2010 Asian Games. The Tide was chosen over Exploit by the organisers as the torch of the Games. The Tide weighs 98g and is 70 cm long, and is tall and straight in shape, while dynamic in terms of image. The torch relay route was unveiled on March 4, 2010. For financial reasons, the torch relay duration around Guangdong and two other cities off Guangdong are 30 days. The flame of the torch was lit in Great Wall of China on October 9, 2010 and travelled around the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. 21 cities were line-up in the list of relay, with 2,010 torchbearers expected to carry it from October 12 to November 12, 2010, however two cities was added later in the route for a single day on October 15, 2010, making the number of torchbearer increase to 2,068 peoples. The late addition of two cities are to memorise them as the host of 2007 Asian Winter Games and 2012 Asian Beach Games. The relay in Harbin was held in the main venues of 1996 Asian Winter Games: Harbin Ice Hockey Rink while the relay on October 22, 2010 was affected by Typhoon Megi as it was held under the rain. The relay from November 68 will acting as demonstration relay.

Concerns and controversies Air qualityLike Beijing 2008, Guangzhou is also committed to raising the air quality. The authority had pledged 600 million to fight the problem, and had ordered around 32 chemical plants to stop production by the end of 2009. The report shown on July 13, 2010 indicates that the air quality was rated at 95.07% in 2009, an increase of 12.01% since 2004, this issue eventually cost authority 24 billion. Latest action from organisers to curb the pollution included decreased the movement of vehicles up to 40 perfect, and banned the barbeque stalls in 11 cities.

Mandarin or CantoneseThe citizens of Guangzhou opposed the proposal suggested by the city committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) to use Mandarin more in television news programmes, rather than Guangzhou's main language Cantonese. This caused anger in the community. Cantonese is basically attacked on two fronts. One is "internal migration" - people moving to Guangdong from other regions. Guangzhou boasts 14 million residents; half of the new settlers do not speak any Cantonese. The other front is the government policy to create a "unified harmonious society". PRC's 1982 constitution article 19 set Putonghua as the official language. A survey in June 2010 showed 80% of 30,000 respondents opposed the switch from Cantonese to Mandarin.

Tibetan protestsSimilar to Beijing 2008, Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) launched protest about Guangzhou hosting the Asian Games on October 20, 2010, saying it lacks "moral right" to hold such an important international sporting event. A further rally will be made on November 12, 2010, on day the opening ceremony held.[62] Protest also widespread in Qinghai following government decision to reform the language in Tibetan area, curb or eliminate the use of Tibetan language in school.[63] A petition was signed by Tibetan teachers to back the support of the language and was sent to the government of Qinghai. China government defends the policy, but to reconsider it again.

Cricket absencesCricket is among the five debutant sports in the Games. However, India despite its historical record has decided not to send its cricket team to the Games, according

to the Board of Control for Cricket in India it is due to earlier "international commitments". However, it's main rivals, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have confirmed their participation.

The Guangzhou TV tower dominates the skyline behind the opening and closing ceremonies stadium on Haixinsha Island in the middle of the Pearl River. (ATR) November Asian Games Biggest Ever The Asian Games in Guangzhou, China will be the biggest ever. "The Asiad this year has the most number of events and contestants, and is the biggest in history" said Lei Ji, the Games deputy manager, ticketing division. "It will feature 42 sports, comprising the 28 Olympic Games events and 14 nonOlympic sports. What's special about these 14 is that they are uniquely Asian and familiar to the people as recreation. Making their formal debut at the Games are four major sports - dancesport, dragon boat, roller sports and cricket, and two board games, weiqi and xiangqi." Ji had little apprehension about selling tickets for sports such as cricket that dont have large profiles in China.

"We will do our best to bring cricket to the people of China and we are not worried about tickets not being taken up for the event."

2010 Asian Games Flame collected at Great Wall From English.cntv.cn October 12th 2010 The flame of the Guangzhou Asian Games has been collected at the Great Wall in northern Beijing. The flame was successful lit despite an overcast morning in the capital city.

The flame collection ceremony took place at the Juyongguan Great Wall, one of the icons of the whole structure. This was also a tribute to the 1990 Asian Games held in Beijing two decades ago. 17 female flame ambassadors helped the igniting ceremony. A concave mirror was used to focus the sunshine's energy to light the flame rod. Kang Chenchen, a college student from Yunnan Institute of Art kindled the flame from mirror. She then transferred the flame from the rod to the kindle box. The Games torch will be lit at the Temple of Heaven next Tuesday on the occasion of 1-month countdown to the start of the games. The 1-month torch relay will be carried out across major cities of China. The 16th Asian Games will open on Nov. 12th this year in Guangzhou, south China.

Asian Games Theme Songis officially released!!The day that Gengfans are waiting for has finally arrived..!! The song which was recorded by Han Geng and Bibi was finally released today. The wait is over Together with the song, there is a news article describing how it came about for the choice of singers.. Please just read the translated article below and the video clip at the end of the page.. The project Return of the King by Gengfans is tied in with this official release of the theme song for Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou in November. The press conference will be on 4th June so watch out for ithehehe

Once the Asian Games songwas heard, which was composed by musician Xiao Ke and MV producer Jinhe Lin and sung by Bibi Chow and Hangeng, this promotional song can surely drive the national passion towards the games to the limits. With the Cross-Strait cooperation of the elite singers, the grand combination of the song will send a wild music wave for the Asian Games, as well as becoming the most popular song of 2010. Hangeng with high popularity, beating Rain to be chosen as the lead male singer After many rounds of serious considerations, the sponsors chose Hangeng based on his worldwide influence and his Chinese nationality, deciding to give up Rain and used Geng as the lead male singer of . This might as well be his first grand appearance for 2010.

After struggling for a long time in Korea, Geng accumulated a lot of popularity and great appealing power. After coming back to the Chinese music industry, he even became the successor of the new generations dancing singers. After being invited to sing the promotion song, Hangeng was very emotional, saying that as a native Chinese, he felt extremely honored to sing for the Asian Games. Gengs grand return to China, 4 advantages which helped him to become the lead singer. Being the lead singer ofthis time, it serves as an important signal for Hangengs return to China, moreover, there are 4 advantages that makes him different from other mainland singers. Firstly, during the 2008 Beijing Olympic, he was the first member from a boy group to be the torch-bearer, establishing a royal image of him in the sports field. After being invited to shoot the promotional film of volunteers of Asian Games, Hangeng became the singer with the most connection with Guangzhou Asian Games. In addition, his healthy, refreshing and positive image helped him to gain the chance of being chosen. Moreover, during the Beijing Olympic, Hangeng had participated in the song composed by Xiao Ke, together with hundreds more singers, gaining the experience of interpreting the music of large sports events. With his good qualities, Geng has a high popularity and many fans support, further promoting the Asian Games song. Duet of Hangeng and Bibi Chow, creating a new era for Asian Games promotional song Although Bibi Chow and Hangeng are singers (born in) of the late 80s, they are both elite idols in the new generation of music industry. With them cooperating to sing a duet, they would be the youngest and vigorous pair of singers in the Asian Games, as well as making a new record in the Asian Games promotion history.

Other than the youngest group singers in the Asia Games, in the Mandarin music sector, Bibi Chow and Hangeng are both idols with high popularity, which makes them a perfect combination for the Asian Games promotion song. And with their popularity, could hopefully be popular among the society, adding more interesting moments to the Guangzhou Asian Games.
