OPENING SESSION SPEAKERTUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2009

Victor Rivas Rivers, Actor,Author, Activist and Spokesmanfor the National Network to EndDomestic Violence

In 1978, the Miami Herald dubbed VictorRivas Rivers "The Longest Long Shot"when he became the first Cuban Americanto be given a two season tryout with theMiami Dolphins. He had defied the odds bysurviving a violent upbringing and by playing

in the position of offensive guard—usuallyreserved for football players much larger than he was at the time.

Next came Hollywood in 1979 where, again as a long shot, he went on toattain starring roles in television, film, and on stage.

Rivers's dramatic personal story also reflects an amazing portrait of ayoung man overcoming the odds. Born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, he camewith his family to this country at the age of two, enduring horrific childabuse and witnessing domestic violence on the level of torture at thehands of his father. At age 15, he took then unprecedented legal actionagainst his father, going on to live with a series of foster families.

Thanks to the intervention of his community, Rivers turned his life arounddramatically, going from hard-core gang-member to senior class presidentand lettering in four sports. He attended Florida State University on a fullfour-year football scholarship, where he was a team captain and scholarathlete mentored by Coach Bobby Bowden, before the 1978-79 seasonswhen he became a free agent draft pick with the Miami Dolphins.

Author of the highly acclaimed memoir, A Private Family Matter, Rivershas served as the national spokesperson for the National Network to EndDomestic Violence since 1999. In 2007 became a Community Championfor Verizon, their first celebrity advocate to spearhead a far-reaching violence prevention campaign.

Today, having broken the cycle of violence, Rivers is also a devoted husband and father-what he believes are his two most important roles. It is his indomitable spirit as an actor, athlete and as a human being that may have inspired director Taylor Hackford to call him “a big man-in heart and soul.”

KEYNOTE LUNCHEON SPEAKER WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2009

Liz Murray, Inspiration for the movie, “FromHomeless to Harvard”

From homeless to Harvard . . . it is an unlikely turn of events. Liz Murray’s life is a triumph overadversity and a stunning example of the importance of dreaming big.Liz’s life as the child of cocaine-addicted parents in the Bronx was

bitterly grim. There was never food in the house, everything was filthy, drugs were everywhere

and the welfare checks were spent before they arrived.

By age 15, Liz’s mom had died and she was homeless – living on the streets, riding the subway all night, and eating from dumpsters.Amidst this pain, Liz always imagined her life could be much betterthan it was. “I started to grasp the value of the lessons learned whileliving on the streets. I knew, after overcoming those daily obstacles, that next to nothing could hold me down.” Determined to take chargeof her life, Liz finished high school in just two years while campingout in New York City parks and subway stations. After attendingColumbia University for a short period to be closer to her ill father, Liz has returned to Harvard where she is completing her degree.

Liz’s story is exhilarating and her delivery innocently honest, as shetakes audiences on a very personal journey where she achieves theimprobable. Her story sounds like a Hollywood movie – and it practically is. Lifetime Television produced a movie about Liz’s lifestory entitled From Homeless to Harvard, which premiered in April2003. Liz is also the recipient of Oprah Winfrey’s first ever ChutzpahAward and is currently writing her memoirs for Hyperion.
