    PRECAUTIONS ONSUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTSYSTEM

This supplemental restraint system sectioncontains important information concerning

the driver and passenger supplemental airbags. The supplemental restraint system airbags can help reduce impact force to thedriver and front passenger in certain frontalcollisions. The supplemental air bags aredesigned to supplement the crash protec-tion provided by the driver and front passen-ger seat belts and are not a substitute forthem. Seat belts should always be correctlyworn and the driver and front passenger

seated a suitable distance away from thesteering wheel and instrument panel. SeeSeat belts for instructions and precautionson seat belt usage later in this section.

The supplemental air bags operate onlywhen the ignition switch is in the ON orSTART position.

After turning the ignition key to thposition, the supplemental air baging light illuminates. The supplemair bag warning light will turn offabout 7 seconds if the system is otional.

    WARNING

The supplemental air bags ordinarilywill not inflate in the event of a sideimpact, rear impact, roll over, orlower severity frontal collision. Al-ways wear your seat belts to helpreduce the risk or severity of injuryin various kinds of accidents.

The seat belts and the supplemental

air bags are most effective when youare sitting well back and upright inthe seat. Supplemental air bags in-flate with great force. If you are un-restrained, leaning forward, sittingsideways or out of position in anyway, you are at greater risk of injuryor death in a crash. You may alsoreceive serious or fatal injuries fromthe supplemental air bag if you areup against it when it inflates. Always

sit back against the seatback and as

far away as practical from the sing wheel or instrument paneways use the seat belts.

Keep hands on the outside osteering wheel. Placing them i

the steering wheel rim could incthe risk that they are injured whesupplemental air bag inflates.

    Supplemental air bag system

The driver supplemental air bag is located inthe center of the steering wheel. The passen-ger supplemental air bag is located in the topright section of the instrument panel.

These systems are designed to meet optionalcertification requirements under U.S. regula-tions. They are also permitted in Canada. The

optional certification allows air bags to bedesigned to inflate somewhat less forcefullythan previously. However, all of the infor-

mation, cautions and warnings imanual still apply and must be follo

The supplemental air bag system is deto inflate in higher severity frontal collalthough it may inflate if the forces in a

type of collision are similar to those of aseverity frontal impact. It may not incertain frontal collisions. Vehicle damalack of it) is not always an indication of supplemental air bag system operation

Those with a history of a breathing conditionshould get fresh air promptly.

The supplemental air bags, along with the useof the seat belts, helps to cushion the impactforce on the face and chest of the occupant. Itcan help save lives and reduce serious inju-

ries. However, an inflating supplemental airbag may cause facial abrasions or other inju-ries. Supplemental air bags do not providerestraint to the lower body.

Seat belts should be correctly worn and thedriver and passenger seated upright as faras practical away from the steering wheel orinstrument panel. The supplemental airbags inflate quickly in order to help protectthe front occupants. Because of this, the

force of the supplemental air bags inflatingcan increase the risk of injury if the occu-pant is too close to, or is against, thesupplemental air bag module during infla-tion.

The supplemental air bags deflate quicklyafter a collision.

The supplemental air bags operate onlywhen the ignition switch is in the ON orSTART position.

    WARNING

Do not place any objects on thesteering wheel pad or on the instru-ment panel. Also, do not place anyobjects between any occupant and

the steering wheel or on the instru-ment panel. Such objects may be-come dangerous projectiles, andcause injury if the supplemental airbag inflates.

Right after inflation, several supple-mental air bag system componentswill be hot. Do not touch them; youmay severely burn yourself.

    No unauthorized changes should be

made to any components or wiring ofthe supplemental air bag system. Thisis to prevent accidental inflation ofthe supplemental air bag or damageto the supplemental air bag system.

Do not make unauthorized changes toyour vehicles electrical system, sus-pension system or front end structure. This could affect proper operation ofthe supplemental air bag system.

Tampering with the supplementbag system may result in seriousonal injury. Tampering incchanges to the steering wheel aninstrument panel assembly, bying material over the steering w

    WARNING

The pre-tensioner seat belt cannotbe reused after activation. It must be

replaced together with the retractorand buckle as a unit.

If the vehicle becomes involved in afrontal collision but the pre-tensioner is not activated, be sure tohave the pre-tensioner systemchecked and, if necessary, replacedby your NISSAN dealer.

No unauthorized changes should bemade to any components or wiring

of the pre-tensioner seat belt sys-

If you need to dispose of the pre-tensioner or scrap the vehicle, con-tact an authorized NISSAN dealer.Correct pre-tensioner disposal pro-cedures are set forth in the appropri-ate NISSAN Service Manual. Incor-rect disposal procedures couldcause personal injury.

The front seat pre-tensioner seat belt sys-tem activates in conjunction with the supple-mental air bag. Working with the seat belt

USAGEYour chances of being injured in an acci-dent and/or the severity of injury may begreatly reduced if you are wearing your seatbelt and it is properly adjusted. NISSANstrongly encourages you and all of yourpassengers to buckle up every time youdrive, even if your seating position includesa supplemental air bag.

Most U.S. States and Canadian prov-

inces or territories specify that seat beltsbe worn at all times when a vehicle isbeing driven.

    WARNING

Every person who drives or rides inthis vehicle should use a seat belt atall times. Children should be prop-erly restrained and, if appropriate, inchild restraints.

The seat belt should be properly ad-justedto a snug fit. Failure to doso mayreduce the effectiveness of the entirerestraint system and increase thechance or severity of injury in an acci-

sudden braking or a collision. If the seat belt warning light glows

continuously while the ignition isturned ON with all doors closed andall seat belts fastened, it may indi-cate a malfunction in the system.Have the system checked by an au-thorized NISSAN dealer.

All seat belt assemblies includingretractors and attaching hardwareshould be inspected by an autho-rized NISSAN dealer after any colli-sion. NISSAN recommends that allseat belt assemblies in use during acollision be replaced unless the col-lision was minor and the belts showno damage and continue to operateproperly. Seat belt assemblies not inuse during a collision should also beinspected and replaced if either dam-

In addition, there are many types of childrestraints available for larger children whichshould be used for maximum protection.

NISSAN recommends that all pre-teenchildren be restrained in the rear seat ifpossible. According to accident statis-tics, children are safer when properlyrestrained in the rear seat than in thefront seat.
