We also have a narrow focus - Miata performance and nothing else. This lets us do the best job we can. When you give us a call or send us an email, here are the folks who will take care of you. We hope to hear from you soon!

Bill Cardell is the founder, owner and "big cheese dog" of Flyin' Miata. It's quite possible he knows more about the Miata than Mazda does. He has a habit of putting turbochargers on just about anything he owns. Good thing he doesn't have a lawnmower.

Teri Cardell keeps everyone at FM in line and handles sales. She likes to embarass the boys on the racetrack. Around here, "you drive like a girl" is a compliment.

Mark Wingerter is probably the first person you'll talk to when you call FM. The other employees have decided not to let him have forced induction, he's fast enough already. When he's not driving he's probably hanging from a frozen waterfall somewhere.

Jon Hansen spends all of his time working on Miatas. He's our resident mechanic with 20 years experience working on just about anything. He figures that in another 20, he should know what he's doing.

If you order a part from FM, it will be packed in a way that will survive anything short of a nuclear bomb blast and every little nut and bolt will be there. You can thank James Brooks for this. He'll also answer your cartoon trivia questions.

Jeremy Ferber is an ECU tuning guru. If you have questions on just about anything to do with engine management and forced induction he'll be able to help you out. Being from San Diego, he actually took surfing as a class in high school.

Keith Tanner is our graphic designer, web weenie and one of our techs. If you're online in Miata world, you've probably been in touch with him. He owns two cars that weigh under 1500 lbs and one that is over 4500.

Deb McGlynn is one of our office managers and helps make FM run under budget despite the best efforts of the boys. If you're talking to her on the phone, do not call her "Debbie".

Heather Gavry works in shipping with James, making sure that everything travels safe and sound. When she drives her Honda S2000 to work we make her park in the back.

Bill Johnson keeps the building running and helps the techs find the thousands of odd bits and pieces stashed around the shop. He's also a founder of the local Miata club with his black 1999 and is known for his quality duets with Jon.

Turbodog is the FM mascot and the fastest Miata fan around. If you come out to visit us, get ready to spend some time throwing balls for him.

Every few years, Car and Driver magazine holds a competition called the Superfour Challenge. They invite the best four-cylinder tuners and tell them to bring their fastest street car. We took part in 2003 with "Elvis" (on the cover of this catalog) and were invited back this year. While the competition is for street cars, most of the cars that show up aren't really intended for the street. We feel differently. We decided to bring a fast car that was suitable for a cross-country drive - and what better way to prove it than to drive from Colorado to Michigan for the event with another Miata for a support vehicle? The car was our interpretation of the ultimate street Miata. We started with our 2004 Mazdaspeed MX5 and started pulling out parts. The stock engine was bored and stroked to 1995cc while the head was ported and polished. The turbo system was replaced by an FM II with a Garrett GT3071R turbocharger and a custom 3" exhaust system. A Hydra Nemesis was installed along with JIC Magic FLT-A2 shocks and springs, FM sways and some massive 245/45-16 Bridgestone tires mounted on SSR Competition wheels. Our four-wheel big brake kit was bolted on and equipped with some carefully chosen pads. We also made a few small aerodynamic tweaks. This powertrain produced 323 hp at the rear wheels on the first dyno pull. We estimate it was at 350 on the 93 octane pump gas we were allowed to run at the event. Track testing showed the car could lap a local racetrack on street tires much faster than a Spec Miata on race rubber. The competition itself consisted of a day of street driving followed by the instrumented testing. On the street, the testers appreciated the civil ride and the air conditioning in the brutal Michigan heat wave. They were also impressed that we had the only serious competitor that had driven to the event under its own power. We were also the only car to score full points in driveability and actually complete the event. The track test consisted of a standing start with an instrumented 1/4 mile and 0-60 time, then into a road course in the infield. This exited out on to the oval where the cars had to accelerate up to 140 mph (225 kmh) and come to a stop. It's a taxing test that rewards a car with well-rounded abilities. While we didn't win, we did manage to go through the road course faster than a 400 hp Lotus Elise, accelerate from 100 to 140 mph in under 12 seconds and come to a full stop from 140 mph in 608 feet. The car was consistent enough and easy enough to drive that the first three runs only varied by only 0.2 seconds despite the fact that the driver had never seen it before. All this for a car that cost less than the list price on a stock Elise. The icing on the cake was the trip home. 1500 miles in two days with only one driver - and an average 34 mpg at over 70 mph. We're now driving the car daily. It might not be the fastest tuner car in the US, but it's possibly the fastest one that's used to get groceries!

about Flyin’ Miata forced induction We’ve been working on forced induction in Miatas for a long, long time. Our first Miata was turbocharged with a mere 1800 miles on the odometer, way back in 1990. Since then, the cars have become faster, more reliable and much smoother to drive. We have recently decided to design new turbocharger and supercharger systems from scratch. We’re taking our 15 years of experience in Miatas and combining them with the latest design and manufacturing techniques. Unfortunately, this means we can’t give you the full details in this catalog as they were not available at the time of printing. You can see all the latest details on our website at www.flyinmiata.com.We can tell you some things, though.

All parts will be manufactured on computer-controlled equipment. While hand fabricated parts work well for experimentation, they don't give the consistency of fit and performance that we demand. Our new parts are designed with 3D modelling programs, turned into rapid prototypes for test fitting and then produced with CNC equipment. It's not as easy as simply welding pipes together but the accuracy, quality of finish and control over flow make it worthwhile. The new kits will continue to benefit from our expertise in engine management. Years of testing on the road, the track and our dyno have helped us develop solutions that either work smoothly with the stock engine computer or provide a powerful replacement. Lower boost kits use items like our Voodoo Box while the higher power kits come with full computers such as our well-honed Link or the highly-capable Hydra Nemesis. For emissions-sensitive applications we have a piggyback fuel and timing controller that provides a good middle ground of complexity and performance.

All our kits are developed with the help of our own Rototest chassis dynamometer. This allows us to not only accurately measure power output, but also to torture-test everything from cooling systems to exhaust manifolds. Some other aspects of the car should be upgraded when you increase the power to this extent. The factory clutch will need to be replaced and the exhaust system should be replaced with one of our free-flowing setups. Other items to consider upgrading are the brake system, cooling system and suspension components. Again, please call us to discuss the merits of various upgrades. The most important ingredient of all is our support. We have more experience in forced induction Miatas than anyone else in the world. When you call us with a question, you may very well be talking to the person who designed the parts. There’s no substitute for that sort of knowledge. The most difficult part is deciding which kit is best for you. Supercharged and turbocharged Miatas deliver their power differently and the best system for one driver might be completely different than the ideal setup for someone else. Give us a call and we’ll help walk you through the decision process.

There’s a lot that goes into a good forced induction kit. Here’s an example of what is

included in the FM II turbo system. We could make them simpler, but we couldn’t make

them any more complete.

engine control units Modern hotrodding no longer involves messing with carburetors or playing with distributor advance curves. Now, it's done with computers and Miatas are no different. It’s probably fair to say that we have more experience with Miata engine management than any other Miata vendor. The most important thing to consider when buying some sort of engine management is the support. The most powerful computer in the world is useless if it isn't tuned correctly. This is where Flyin' Miata comes in. We first started playing with Miata engine management over a decade ago. All our solutions come with default settings that were developed on our dyno with highly accurate sensors as well as on-road and track testing. Once installed in your car, you generally have only a few changes to make to adapt the programming for your own setup, fuel grades and altitude. Of course we’re available to help you out. Not many people will help tune a car via email, but we do it all the time.We use three different techniques to ensure turbocharged or supercharged cars behave themselves. Two of them retain the stock ECU. The advantage to this is that the factory cold start, idle and emissions tuning are untouched. The simplest is our Voodoo Box and timing wheel. We use these on cars that have extra headroom available in the factory fuel injection system. It’s easy to install and set up and causes no difficulty with emissions tests. The downside is that it is limited by the unused capacity in the stock fuel system. For more precise fuel and timing management, the next step is the Link piggyback system. The stock ECU takes care of everything when the car is not operating in boost. Under boost, the piggyback uses four auxiliary injectors to provide the fuel the system needs based on a 3D fuel map. It also retards the ignition timing based on another 3D map. This gives better spoolup and more torque down low than a fixed timing retard. Again, emissions tests are unaffected. The limits of this system are fairly high, but eventually more accuracy is required. The ultimate solution for power and driveability is a full replacement ECU, often known as a standalone. The stock unit is removed and a programmable one is put in its place. This gives full control over fuel and timing with a high degree of precision, so the car can be tuned for more power without sacrificing safety. The new ECU can also control boost on turbocharged cars and add a knock sensor to those that never had one. It’s possible to make the car run more smoothly than on the factory computer if tuned well. This is the technique we use on our top-end kits. The downside? They’re more complex to set up and will not pass emissions tests that involve plugging a scanner into the ECU. They can still pass a tailpipe “sniffer” test if tuned properly though.Which is best for you? Give us a call and we’ll be pleased to help you decide.

Data Log Lab The best program we’ve ever seen for dealing with a standalone ECU. Data Log Lab was originally written for Flyin’ Miata’s own Link ECU and has since been expanded for a wide variety of applications. A graphical display of all engine parameters in a datalog make it invaluable in extracting the most from any system and for hunting down little problems. It will even measure horsepower based on your rate of acceleration! One of the most pow er ful tuning tools available. You can easily share DLL files with us or other users to allow your car to be tuned remotely. Not compatible with stock ECUs.For the Link, it’s also a two-way system that allows you to view your fuel and timing maps in a 3D table, make changes to the ECU maps and upload them. Free 30 day trial available at www.flyinmiata.com. For Link ECU, requires Serial/USBLink in ter face 1990-97 (07-77000) $99.95All other ECUs (no upload capability) (07-77000) $39.95

the Hydra Nemesis The Hydra Nemesis is the latest addition to our standalone ECUs. For 1999-05 owners, the Hydra is a long-awaited solution. It’s what we use in our high-end turbocharger and supercharger kits for those cars. It’s a very versatile unit with a number of user-programmable inputs and outputs based on both 2D and 3D maps. What does this mean? Well, let’s say you wanted to lower your intake temperatures. You can program the ECU so that if the air intake temperature goes above 40C and an arming switch is on, it fires an intercooler spray. It’s really up to your imagination. Launch control is built in, as is the capability for staged injectors and anti-lag. Individual fuel and timing trim is available. If it detects too much knock, it will automatically go into a limp-home mode to prevent engine damage. The Nemesis is one of the few ECUs that is capable of controlling the later alternators and Variable Valve Timing (VVT). If there’s a problem such as a lack of fuel or knock, it will use the Check Engine light to let you know. It even automatically datalogs every time the car is run.Since the Hydra can run staged injectors, it's an easy upgrade for 1999-05 Miatas equipped with the FM I and FM II turbosystems that use the Link Piggyback. The Hydra can take over control of both the stock and auxiliary injectors and no new ones are required.Installation is a simple plug-in. The Hydra uses the stock sensors or it can be configured to use specialized sensors from other cars. A wideband O2 sensor is an option to give you full fuel autotuning. Electronic boost control is available with a boost control solenoid. Datalogs can be analyzed either with Hydra’s own software or the excellent Data Log Lab. It is not yet available for the 1990-97 cars, but it will be soon.Every harness is checked for accuracy and the ECU is loaded with an appropriate default map for your application before the Nemesis is shipped. Flyin’ Miata is the exclusive distributor for the Miata version of the Hydra Nemesis in North America. If you are outside our area, you will have to deal with the distributor for your country. Further information may be found at the Hydra website.Hydra Nemesis 1990-05 (07-17000) $1450.00wideband upgrade 1990-05 (06-99150) $336.00

1990-97 Link ECU Simple. Once you plug it into your stock wiring harness (a couple of small modifications are required on some years), you'll discover the Link ECU runs software that was written exclusively for Flyin' Miata and designed to run FM turbos and superchargers. Not a generic "fits all cars" setup, this is tailored to the Miata engine. The operating system of the ECU is the result of years of fine-tuning. It’s what we use to run our most powerful turbo and supercharger setups for the 1990-97 models as well as some of our own powerful naturally aspirated cars making over 100 hp/liter.What does this mean? It means we literally know the software inside and out so we can offer unmatched technical support. The interface has been designed to be easy to use so you will be up and running in a short time. We've also included a number of protection mechanisms to keep your engine safe in extreme conditions. For example, if your engine coolant or air temperature gets over a safe limit, the ECU will impose a fuel cut on high-load operation to prevent damage.Programming can be done either from the small keypad (included) or via Data Log Lab running on a laptop. To make your job easier, the ECU autotunes itself to match your particular setup. There are even datalogging programs available for PocketPC handhelds. Once the system is set up, you simply drive the car.Includes programming keypad and intake tem per a ture sensor. A four wire oxygen sensor (06-99000) is recommended for 1990-93 cars. 1990-95 (07-16500) $1456.00 1996-97 (07-16500) $1591.00

Features:Full support of all factory functions (a/c, fan controls, EGR, etc).192 fully interpolated zones for fuel and timing tables.Active knock control.Electronic boost control with boost assist for quicker spool up.Intake air temp correction for cold start, fuel trim and ignition timing control.Wide-band 02 sensor support. We highly recommend a wide-band sensor for best tuning.Soft rev limiting, air and coolant overtemp protection.Pre-programmed with default fuel and timing tables developed on the dyno and the road.No laptop required, keypad included. Laptop is necessary for datalogging.Autotune feature for fuel.

Link piggyback computer The Link piggyback is a good compromise between the power and complexity of a full standalone and the easy-to-use Voodoo Box. We use it in some of our turbo kits where emissions requirements prohibit the use of a standalone. The piggyback uses up to four auxiliary injectors to add fuel when needed under boost while the stock ECU is left to control the stock injectors. The transition is seamless because the piggyback uses a sophisticated 3D map to decide how much fuel to add. The unit can also retard the timing for safe running under boost while leaving the stock timing for lower emissions and faster spoolup out of boost.Unlike the 1990-97 ECU, this will not ben e fit a naturally as pi rat ed car. Pro gram ming key pad in clud ed. Extremely easy to set up. No datalogging capability. We do recommend our O2 signal modifier along with the piggyback for best driveability. 1990-05 (07-18000) $919.00

FM O2 signal modifier A stock ECU can pull up to 25% of its fuel if it thinks the engine is running rich - such as a boosted car. The actual amount depends on the model of car. At best, this means poor driveability until the computer goes into open loop mode. At worst, it can have catastrophic and expensive results. The signal modifier prevents the ECU from seeing a rich condition under boost. Simple installation and no effects when the car is not generating boost. A popular addition to cars equipped with Powercard fuel management because this solves a characteristic lean mixture at part throttle. Included with our turbo kits that use the Link piggyback. Intended for use only with stock ECU. Not required for cars with full replacement ECUs such as our full Link or Hydra or with cars equipped with our Voodoo Box. 1990-05 (07-46300) $105.00

its the Voodoo Box

This Flyin’ Miata exclusive is a handy little item. It extends the injector pulse width (the amount of time the injectors stay open) under boost to deliver more fuel. No fuel pumps, pressure regulators or injector changes are necessary. Things don’t get much easier than that. It’s limited by the size of the stock injectors, but the 1999-05 cars have lots of unused capacity. The 1990-97 cars can’t handle quite as much boost, but there’s still enough room to run 6 psi or so, depending on the system. Unlike a similar device on the market, we designed this to be adjustable so you can get the perfect fuel curve for your setup. It also incorporates one of our O2 signal modifiers to prevent the stock ECU from pulling fuel when you’re making boost at partial throttle. This is safer for your engine and makes for a smoother drive. Simple installation. 1990-05 07-16700 $415.00

Flyin' Miata fuel railWe looked at other fuel rails and figured we could do better. Our billet fuel rail offers a feed from each end to promote better distribution between cylinders and offer higher flow overall. This prevents one cylinder (usually number 4) from running lean and melting the piston. Aluminum banjo fittings on the ends of the rail make it easy to install instead of dealing with brass hose barbs. Available for 1990-05 Miatas. please call for pricing

Flyin’ Miata adjustable cam gearsWant to get the most from your engine? Flyin’ Miata’s cam gears are designed for maximum durability as well as ease of adjustment. Five stainless steel studs are used to lock the gear in place to prevent any slippage. The outside ring is coal blasted and hard anodized for grip and durability. 24 degrees of adjustment.Sold individually. Fits both intake and exhaust cams on 1990-95 models. Fits exhaust cams only on 1996-05. Please call for details. 1990-05 (04-66400) $138.00

Randall cowl intake ductReally “cool” product. This replaces the snorkel from your stock airbox with a 100% carbon fibre tube that gets cool air from the high pressure area in front of the windshield. Because it always takes air from outside the engine bay, it’s much more effective than a simple filter attached to a tube on a naturally aspirated car. We’ve measured a 5 hp increase on our dyno. On the street, the difference between this and other intakes will be even greater as the other designs battle with underhood heat.Installation involves cutting a hole in your firewall (1.25” holesaw required, not included). 1990-97 model shown. 1990-97 (05-27000) $163.00

engine technologyThe Miata engine is a strong little unit from the factory. It’s not the highest performance engine in stock form but it takes extremely well to boost. Of course, anything can be improved. At Flyin’ Miata, we’ve been working for years to make it stronger, faster, lighter - the super Miata engine! So what to do? There are two basic categories to improving an engine. Strength and power.Strength is easy. Take the weak parts and replace them with upgraded ones. Our rods and pistons are not only lighter than stock parts, they’re also stronger. 1999-05 engines in particular benefit from a built-up bottom end. If you’re planning on running forced induction, lower compression pistons will allow you to safely run more boost. For a naturally aspirated car, high compression will make more horsepower.Ah, more power. Think of your engine as a big air pump. The easier you can move air in and out, the more power you will make. This is where items such as our intakes, intake manifolds and headers come in. But you can make a difference inside the engine as well. Larger valves will increase flow in and out of the cylinders. Stiffer valve springs will let you spin the engine faster and still keep your valves under control. Cam gears allow you to fine-tune the powerband to your needs. And some careful attention to the shape of the head itself can make a big difference.

Flyin’ Miata is happy to help provide the parts you need to make a Miata engine stronger and more powerful. We’ll help advise you on the best way to attain your goals. Or, for the ultimate solution, we can build an engine for you. We’ve put together engines for everyone from stock-class racers in national-level competition to monstrous turbo cars that face up to the best tuners around. Using the experience gained from years of dyno testing, racing, flowbench testing and street driving, we can put together a motor that will do just what you want. Our services include headwork, cleaning, balancing, machining and assembly. Whether you’re looking for a competitive showroom stock engine, basic headwork, a strong street shortblock or a full-blown stroker monster motor, we can give you the power and reliability you need. You can use

the handy engine quote calculator on our website or give us a call to discuss your needs. Here are some sample prices:

Wiseco pistonsWiseco pistons are widely recognized as some of the finest performance pistons in the world. Forged for high strength, they’re perfect for extreme use such as high boost operation. Moly coated for longevity and low friction. Combined with Carrillo rods, they weigh 1/4 lb per cylinder less than stock for less internal stress and quicker engine response. Pistons are available in 1mm overbore with 9:1 compression ratio for turbo applications or 2 mm overbore with 11:1 compression for naturally aspirated. Includes rings and tapered wrist pins. Sold in sets of four. Forged pistons will be slightly noisier than stock when cold.+1 mm 9:1 (turbo use) 1990-05 (04-69110) $563.00+2 mm 11:1 (n/a use) 1990-05 (04-69120) $589.00

FM head gasketA Flyin’ Miata exclusive! All metal, layered steel head gasket, perfect for high boost applications. Available in stock to 1mm overbore or 2mm overbore sizes. This is the same thickness as stock (0.040"/1mm) so your compression ratio is left unchanged. 1.8 cars already have a steel gasket. 1990-93 (04-20005) $97.95

its FM stroker kit

For the Miata that has almost everything, we have the Stroker. There’s no replacement for displacement. A bigger engine makes more torque, more power and can spool up a bigger turbo. We cut apart a stock block to find out just how much capacity we could fit inside. We were able to squeeze a 4 mm stroke without the need for modifying the block. The billet crank is custom made to high standards. Moly coated exotic pistons and custom rods allowed us to keep the same rod ratio as a stock 1.8 so the car would still love to rev. A 1.5mm overbore was chosen because it leaves enough strength for turbo use and also allows use of the stock head gasket. The end result? 1996cc of displacement that feels even bigger.Fits 1.8 blocks only. As tested on our competition cars, this is part of the recipe for the ultimate Miata motor. Includes new Carrillo rods and 9:1 Wiseco pistons that maintain the stock rod ratio. 11:1 high compression pistons are also available. 1994-05 (04-66350) $3799.00

ARP head and main cap studsThere’s no point in building a bulletproof bottom end and not using top-quality fasteners. These studs are more evenly tensioned than bolts and can be reused. We worked with ARP to ensure these fit the Miata perfectly. head studs 1990-05 (04-66205) $147.00 main cap studs 1990-05 (04-66210) $116.00

Carrillo rodsGood rods are important. Carrillo is world renowned for their super high quality connecting rods and are the first choice of racers everywhere. If you’re planning on running extended high rpm or high boost beyond our basic kit recommendations, you would be well advised to invest in a set of these or risk having a see-through Miata engine. Sold in sets of four.

H beam rods At 440g, they’re almost 100g less than stock but extremely strong. Almost too beautiful to put inside a motor! 20% stronger than the A beam and suitable for the most extreme Miata engines in existence. 1990-05 (04-66000) $1090.00

“Super A beam” rods Despite being lighter (421g) and less expensive than the H beam design, these rods are made with the same attention to detail. An excellent choice for almost every Miata engine, even our high-horsepower strokers. The design has recently been tweaked to make it even stronger. 1990-05 (04-66005) $814.00

valve spring kitAt 7000 rpm, your valves open and close every 17 milliseconds. Too stiff a spring means extra drag which costs power. Too soft a spring means the valve starts to float and never closes all the way.Carefully specified for the Miata, these springs are part of the ideal Miata head. The titanium retainer’s light weight means there’s less reciprocating mass, which lets the valves respond more quickly and reduces stress on the valvetrain. The well-matched spring rate means your valves are better controlled at high engine speed, but without the drag and extra stress of a too-stiff spring. In turbo cars, the exhaust valves will seat better even under high backpressure. As an added bonus, they also allow for greater lift (12mm / 0.472”) if you’re running different cams. They are designed to allow engine speeds of up to 9000 rpm before valve float.Aluminum spring seat, chrome silicon steel spring and titanium retainer. Sold in sets of 16 for a complete head. Requires the use of valve retainers from a 1990-93 or 1999-05 engine (not included). 1990-05 (04-66600) $366.00

stainless steel valvesMore flow equals more power! That’s why our stainless valves are already back-cut and undercut for improved flow. The black nitride coating makes them harder for high durability and lower friction to reduce valvetrain losses. 1.8 valves are made with slightly longer stems so they can be ground down for precise installation without the need for expensive shims on solid lifters. Oversize intake valves are not recommended for the VVT engines used on 2001-05 Miatas. Price is for an individual valve, there are 8 intake and 8 exhaust valves in a Miata engine. stock diameter intake valve 1990-05 (04-66550) $22.95 +1mm intake valve 1990-05 (04-66551) $22.95 +1mm exhaust valve 1990-05 (04-66555) $22.95

1.8 conversion piecesOver the past couple of years, dropping a 1.8 engine into a 1990-93 Miata has become more and more common. Why? Well, it's a good way to add power and torque. It's surprisingly affordable. If your plans are for big power, it's easier to accomplish with the larger engine. It also means you can fit a stroker engine in for maximum power from a Miata block.

But the biggest reason it's become so widespread is the existence of the Flyin' Miata conversion kit. A 1.8 swap used to involve a certain amount of fabrication. No more. The conversion kit includes the following: a throttle body adaptor to install your 1.6 throttle body on the 1.8 intake manifold, a coil bracket to mount your coils on the new head, an EGR block-off plate, a throttle cable mount, wiring parts to extend the cam angle sensor harness and the appropriate motor mount brackets.More complete information can be found in the Mazda Miata Performance Projects book, but here's the really short version:Remove your old engine. Transfer your oil pressure sender and thermostat housing over to the 1.8. At this point, you’re also in an excellent position to do a timing belt change. If you have a later 1.6 with the long nose crank, transfer your crank pulley and water pump pulley over as well. If you can’t do this, you will need the alternator from a 1994-97. Do not use one from a 1999 or later car. The stud on the 1.8 alternator is a little larger so you’ll also have to enlarge the hole in the ring connector to attach it.Mount the 1.6 throttle body to the 1.8 manifold and mount the coils to the back of the 1.8 head. Extend the wiring for the cam angle sensor. Install the new throttle body bracket. Block off the EGR fitting. Reinstall the new engine using the 1.8 motor mounts and attach the exhaust. FM MSM downpipeConsidered a “must-have” by MSM enthusiasts, this downpipe replaces the restrictive stock unit and makes a big difference to spoolup, power and smoothness. Honestly, if Mazda had put this part on the car from the factory there would be far less demand for MSM performance parts. If you’re only going to do one thing to your Mazdaspeed, do this.2004-05 MSM only (06-58300) $305.00

FM MSM exhaustAs with our other exhausts, this is stainless steel from end to end. It gives the mute MSM a deep voice that’s not too loud. The adjustable tip ensures a perfect fit. The design looks a little unusual, but it’s both more powerful and easier to build than a traditional setup. The muffler is built specifically for this application. Lifetime warrantee.Adding the exhaust to an otherwise stock car gave us peak power 300 rpm sooner. When combined with the downpipe and intercooler, we saw a 23 hp increase. On top of all this, it weighs 6.5 lbs less than stock!2004-05 MSM only (06-58305) $599.00

Mazdaspeed MX-5 upgradesWe continue to work on extracting more power from the Mazdaspeed MX-5. Although not listed here, we found the Hydra Nemesis ECU (page 6) to be an excellent upgrade for these cars. Please check our website for the latest update. The most recent dyno run on our car showed 265 hp at the rear wheels - 115 more than stock!

FM MSM intercoolerWe have found that the tiny stock intercooler will easily get overwhelmed with the heat from the turbo. This intercooler is the most efficient one we’ve ever sold and solves that problem handily. It also gives the MSM some visual aggression. Grrr!2004-05 MSM only (02-10475) $730.00

MSM intake upgradeThe stock intake piping is extremely restrictive on the Mazdaspeed. We found our turbo made more boost and horsepower with this simple upgrade. Big 2.5" piping makes it easier for the hungry turbo to suck in fresh air. The turbo outlet pipe is also replaced. Made of stainless steel with a simple bolt-in installation. Available for either stock ECUs or cars with aftermarket computers that do not require the stock MAF.2004-05 MSM only (05-29110) $199.00

MSM turbo upgradeThis was worth an additonal 50 hp at 6500 rpm on our modified car. We took a stock turbo and changed the compressor wheel. The modified unit simply bolts in place. Not recommended for stock ECUs.2004-05 MSM only (02-70005) $375.00

cooling techThere are a couple of things you can do to improve the cooling of any car. First, make sure that all the air available is going through the radiator and intercooler. Some simple ducting in the nose of the car can make a drastic difference. Second, don't run any more antifreeze than you need for actual freeze protection. Water is better at cooling engines. We typically run about 30% antifreeze here in western Colorado. Another good option for cars in warm climate is Water Wetter. We're also experimenting with different options for cooling high-horsepower cars. The most recent details may be found on our website or you can give us a call.

Redline Water WetterWater Wetter lowers the surface tension of the water and improves heat transfer, preventing hot spots in your engine. It also contains water pump lubricants and corrosion inhibitors, making it safe to run your car without antifreeze. Not for use below freezing temperatures! 10 oz. 1990-05 (10-46010) $6.95

Flyin' Miata ACT clutchesThe best clutches on the market. We don’t like clutches that are difficult to drive, so we paired a stronger pressure plate with an organic disc for high power ca pa bil i ty with a smooth engagement. We offer two levels of clamping force, Heavy Duty and Extreme. The Extreme can handle more torque, but has a heavier pedal pressure. For extra torque-handling capability, a 1.8 clutch can be installed on a 1.6 car if a 1.8 flywheel is used. We recommend the Extreme pressure plate for cars with forced induction and built motors. All clutch kits include the disc, pres sure plate, release and pilot bearings, an alignment tool and a clutch switch override to minimize thrust bearing wear. 90 day limited warranty. We recommend changing the rear crank main seal and the transmission input seals when the transmission is removed. Heavier pressure plates put more stress on your clutch hydraulic system, so it's a good idea to replace the slave cylinder and possibly install a stainless steel clutch hose as well. This is particularly true of the Extreme. 1.6 Extreme 277 lb/ft 1990-93 (08-10000) $419.00 1.8 Heavy Duty 233 lb/ft 1994-05 (08-19005) $419.00 1.8 Extreme 307 lb/ft 1994-05 (08-19000) $524.00

Flyin' Miata exhaustsGreat sound, classic looks and solid construction - there's a reason Flyin' Miata exhausts are so popular. They’re not the cheapest on the market, but nobody else pays the same attention to detail. They even come with a limited lifetime warranty for the original buyer. All of our exhausts use polished and engraved double-wall 3" / 75mm tips for a subtle, quality look. The mufflers and resonators are tuned to avoid any nasty rasp and provide a deep, powerful sound. The entire system is made by Thermal R&D out of 304 stainless steel and polished to a mirror finish. Even the flanges are polished stainless! All tubes are mandrel-bent on a CNC bender for high accuracy. The tips are adjustable to make it a snap to get the perfect fit. It might all sound a little obsessive, but you’ll never have to buy another exhaust for your Miata!Flyin’ Miata dual exhausts have been the ultimate exhaust system for Miata enthusiasts for over a decade. The twin tips give your Miata some visual attitude and provide a stereo sound. The extra tip is well braced to avoid the cracking that can happen at this spot. A hole has to be cut in the bumper to accomodate the new tip but our stick-on template makes it simple to get this right the first time. 1990-97 cars have an exhaust system that consists of a header, a catalytic converter and a “cat-back” section with the muffler. The 1999-05 cars are a bit different with a long front pipe that contains the catalytic converter and a shorter muffler piece that starts at the rear axle. Our exhausts sometimes have extra joints in them to make them less expensive to ship, but they’re sold in the same sections.

Turbocharged cars should use a turbo exhaust as they are designed for turbo sound levels and have low backpressure to help the turbo perform. They’re made of 2.5" (64mm) tubing for high flow. Naturally aspirated and supercharged cars should use a normal exhaust with more sound deadening and a 2.25" (57mm) diameter. Putting a turbo exhaust on a non-turbo might sound like a cool idea, but it’s too loud. If you call and ask us, we’ll say the same thing.

1990-97 2.25" dual exhaustFM duals have been the ultimate Miata exhaust since they were introduced a decade ago. Even Mazda agrees - the 2006 MX-5 comes with duals from the factory. If you install a set of these, you'll never want to stop driv ing. Fitted with a resonator to prevent any obnoxious raspy noise. Recently redesigned for even better quality and sound and a lower price! Re quires cutting of fascia, tem plate included. Cat-back for naturally aspirated or supercharged cars. 1990-97 (06-27005) $580.00

1990-97 2.25" single exhaustA great value! The same performance and long-life construction as our dual exhausts with a slightly lighter weight and a lower price. A resonator is included. Cat-back for naturally aspirated or supercharged cars. 1990-97 (06-17000) $441.00

Racing Beat stainless 4-1 headerGorgeous and effective, this header is made of 304 stainless steel with a mirror-like polish. The flang es are cast stainless steel for strength and to give a better transition from the oval ports to the round tubing. Tuning efforts have been focused on cap tur ing the low to midrange power gains associated with 4-2-1 designed headers, combined with the traditional high-end power gains associated with the 4-into-1-header design. Not approved for use in California. Does not fit with automatic trans mis sions, turbochargers or Jackson Racing superchargers. 1990-97 (06-86100) $425.00 1999-05 (06-86100) $425.00

Free flowing for better performance yet $300 less than stock! That’s hard to ignore. The low backpressure means turbo cars in particular will benefit with more power and quicker spoolup. The same stainless steel flanges used on our exhausts are also used on the cats. This con vert er is a bit louder than an OEM converter. Limited warranty. Shown here with Wacko, an oth er free flow cat (not included). 1990-95 version is approved for California use. 1999 and later cars have the catalytic converter integrated into the front pipe.

So what about the 2006 MX5? Ah, the 2006. A big leap ahead for the Miata. How many of our 1990-05 parts will fit? That's easy. None. We've heard that the only part that is shared on the new car is the side marker light for European models. So far we've seen nothing that contradicts this information. Outside of lubricants, we're dealing with a whole new range of parts. You can assume that nothing in this catalog will fit the new car unless specified otherwise. We have our own MX5 for development. We'll run it on the dyno, the street and the track. We've supported a couple of them during a 25-hour race. The poor thing will be subjected to all sorts of abuse. This will let us work out the weak points of the car so we can address them. We don't know exactly what they'll be yet. We have some ideas of course. At the time of printing we had begun work on a new exhaust system, springs and already had a JIC coilover setup. From seeing how it was used in other cars, we know the engine responds very well to naturally aspirated modifications. It's quite possible the 2006 section of our next catalog could look quite different than the current one. We'll know more soon enough.

Flyin' Miata big brake kitsThese brakes are like hitting a brick wall - only you can do it over and over again. Big brakes will absorb continuous punishment lap after lap without fade. They’re easier to modulate. As a bonus, they also look great. We put two piece 11"/280mm slotted rotors front and back for maximum heat capacity. The floating design of the rotors means they are free to expand from heat without stress or dimensional instability. They’re also 1.3 lbs lighter than single-piece rotors of similar size. In the front, we wrapped a set of forged four-piston Wilwood calipers around the rotors and used the factory caliper in the rear to retain the emergency brake. Performance pads, stainless steel lines and powdercoated CNC aluminum brackets make it all work. We even include high-performance brake fluid! Lighter than stock 1.8 brakes. Everything you need to make a good handling car into a great handling car! We’ve tested these setups on the track and lived with them on the street to ensure that everything works together without any guesswork on your part. FM suspension parts are the benchmark by which others are measured. Our suspension kits are also available with Ground Control coilover springs instead of FM springs for those who want more adjustability and the ability to cornerweight the car. The cost is $161 to upgrade any kit. Also available with the Tokico Illumina shockfor an extra charge of $64 for 1990-97 models or $84 for 1999-05.

Flyin' Miata suspension packages

Flyin' Miata performance sway barsUpgraded sway bars are one of the best ways to improve your Miata's handling. The bars transfer load from one side of the car to the other under cornering so you have less body roll. This means less camber change for your suspension, quicker turn-in and much faster transitions. Since they only come in to play when only one wheel tries to move, they have little impact on the ride. By adjusting the stiffness of the bars front and rear, you can also easily change the handling balance of the car to suit your needs. Our swaybars are hot formed from 4140 CrMo spring steel. This means they're stronger than the cold-formed bars found elsewhere. We've

designed them to keep the same handling balance as your stock sways, but they have two settings in the front and three in the rear for fine-tuning. Includes brackets and urethane bushings with waterproof grease. 1990-93 sizes are 7/8" front and 5/8" rear. 1994-05 sizes are 1" front and 5/8" rear. 1990-05 (13-36500) $199.00

Flyin' Miata rear shock mountsAn exclusive FM product that has met acclaim from racers and spouses worldwide! A lowered Miata has very little suspension travel in the rear, especially on the 1990-97 cars. Our shock mounts increase rear wheel travel by 1.25"/32mm without affecting ride height. This makes a huge difference in the ride and allows the suspension to work properly instead of hitting the bumpstops. Spherical bearings also improve damping precision. Available for all aftermarket springs and shocks except Penske. Not recommended with stock springs due to a loss in suspension droop. Sold in pairs, not for use in the front because the front wheels will hit the fenders. Not needed on 1999-05 cars because Mazda increased rear wheel travel. 1990-97 (13-57100) $263.00

KYB AGX shocks8-way adjustable damping on the 1990-97 cars, 4-way adjustable damping on the 1999-05. A very popular shock in the Miata community. A great match with our FM springs. Easy to adjust - no need to crawl into the trunk. Limited lifetime warranty. set of 4 1990-05 (please call) $395.80

Tokico Illumina shocksIt's more difficult to adjust than the AGX, but many people prefer the valving of these shocks to the AGX. 5-way adjust ment on all cars. Gives a plush ride with the FM springs or Ground Control coilovers. Limited lifetime warranty. set of 4 1990-97 (please call) $459.80 set of 4 1999-05 (please call) $479.80

KYB GR-2 shocks (non adjustable)Excellent replacement shocks when adjustability is not necessary. Equivalent damping to the AGX set on 2. Limited lifetime warranty. set of 4 1990-97 (please call) $267.80 set of 4 1999-05 (please call) $275.80

JIC Magic FLT-A2 coiloversThey’re not cheap, but they’re Magic. We put a set of these coilovers on our Mazdaspeed before sending it to Car and Driver. Their report? They thought it rode better than the stock suspension. It also managed to handle well enough to beat a modified Lotus Elise through a road course. It doesn’t get much better than that. Suitable for street or track use. Available for the 2006 MX5.15-way adjustment for damping. Pillowball upper mounts with spherical bearings for precise damping. The superior monotube design gives better control and lighter weight than twin-tube designs and with no chance of the shock oil foaming. Can be adjusted for ride height without affecting spring preload, giving full suspension travel regardless of ride height. 9kg (504 lb) front and 8 kg (448 lb) rear spring rates might sound unliveable for the street, but the quality of the damping makes it comfortable enough to drive 800 miles in a day. We know, we’ve done it. These rates mean you will need less rear bar than with our other suspension kits. 1990-05 (13-16100) $1799.00 2006 (13-16105) $1749.00

Flyin' Miata springsA refinement of our popular design. Our springs have rates of 318 lb./inch front and 233 lb./inch rear in order to provide high-quality handling without a killer ride. We've also raised the ride height from our original setup slightly to give the suspension more room to work. How much will they lower your car? If mea sured from the center of the wheel to the fend er lip, your car will end up 13" (330mm) in the front and 13.25"(336mm) in the rear. Set of four. Not rec om mend ed with stock shocks due to lack of damping. 1990-05 (13-46500) $238.00

Ground Control coilover kitsThese Gound Control coilover sleeves give you the ability to change ride height, cornerweight and experiment with different spring rates. In cludes threaded perch for height ad just ment and cornerweighting, The springs are Eibach race series springs. 375 lb./inch front spring rate, 250 lb./inch rear are included, but the standardized spring size means you can choose from a wide range of rates and lengths. Shocks are not included, available for the KYB AGX, Tokico Illumina and Koni Sport. 1990-05 (13-46510) $399.00

wheels and tiresNothing makes a more dramatic difference to the look and performance of your car than a good set of wheels and tires. Unfortunately, that can be good or bad. If you make the wrong decision, you'll end up with a Miata that has lost its sense of fun. That's where we come in.Flyin’ Miata is a Toyo and Tire Rack dealer and can provide just about any wheel and tire you might want. Why buy from us? Because we can suggest combinations that others say don’t fit. We managed to put a set of massive 245-series tires under our Mazdaspeed for the Superfour Challenge - you can see a test-fit at right. You can give us a call and we’ll help you pick out what suits you best. We also have a series of packages available on our website for everything from inexpensive, long-lived setups to killer track combos. Here are some examples. We can supply just about anything you could need though.

the trackday classicYou'll see this on a lot of Miatas at the track. The SSR Competition looks great (it's at the upper right) and is both light and strong. The Toyo RA1 is a sticky R compound tire that lasts an extraordinarily long time and has a nice progressive breakaway. Some people even run this setup on the street. Starting at $1780.

ElvisElvis is our pretty 2002 with a lot of horsepower - over 350 at last count. You can see it on the front cover. We wanted a light wheel with a sticky tire but without spending much money. This led us to the Kosei K1 Racing and the Kumho Ecsta MX. In a 15" size, the weight is 32.5 lbs and the cost is only $756.

Janel's wheelsJanel is a friend of ours who likes her cute little blue Miata (you can see it on the back cover) and enjoys her supercharger. Most of her driving is on the street and she has been on the track a few times. She wanted a wheel/tire combination that was stylish without giving up performance or affordability. We went to OZ for their light Superleggera and Kumho for their affordable and long-lived Ecsta 712. It's not the fastest setup around, but it's forgiving on the track and has a good lifespan. Janel loves them. 29.5 lbs in a 15" size for $848.

FM Cannon rear subframe braceThis brace was designed when Skip Cannon bought an aftermarket unit for his 1992. A number of design flaws were immediately apparent, so he decided to do better. The Cannon brace is CNC machined out of 1/4"/6mm aluminum and powdercoated black so it’s both stiff and rustproof. A removeable section means it doesn't re quire ex haust re mov al. This is the strongest brace available due to its four-point mount ing and heavy aluminum plate construction. Does not fit with GReddy exhaust. Some modifications are required to fit the brace to 1992-97 models. 1990-05 (13-69000) $133.95

We’re proud of these and they're exclusive to us! We started with two stainless steel rails bolted over top of the factory rails - they're shown at right. Some instrumented testing showed a 30% decrease in twist on a car already equipped with a roll bar. Not bad! The new rails are much stronger than the originals and can be used for a jacking point. High-strength stainless fasteners avoid any rust problems in the future. Weight is 13 lbs. Intended for 1990-02 Miatas although they can be adapted for cars with the Sport bracing. To make the car even stiffer, we added the stainless butterfly-shaped center section to join the rails and turn the transmission tunnel into a box. This makes a tired 1990 feel like a brand new 2005 and gives the suspension a solid platform to work on. The center section is adjustable to clear exhaust systems of different sizes and designs and can be removed easily for full access to the transmission tunnel. With most exhausts, ground clearance is not affected. The fuel and brake lines are protected by the braces and the whole assembly is strong enough that it will not be damaged by impacts with the ground. Weight is 15 lbs, all below the center of gravity and between the wheels. Not intended for cars with the 2001-02 Sport bracing or the 2003-05 models. A car equipped with the frame rails can be upgraded to the full butterfly setup later if desired. rails only 1990-02 (13-69010) $190.00 complete butterfly brace (includes frail rails) 1990-02 (13-69020) $390.00

AWR widebody kitNeed some big tires to hold down big power? Here's the answer. Designed to cover the fat slicks used in E Production, these flares will extend your body by 4"/100mm at the rear and 3"/75mm in the front. It also adds a fantastic muscular look to a little car. Thick enough for use on a street car. The flares come as 8 individual pieces - the main flares and small bumper extensions. They will need to be bonded to the car by a body shop. Since the stock front fenders are retained, this body modification is legal for SM2 autocross class. Available for stock or Racing Beat bumpers (shown below) as well as for 1999-05 cars. 1990-97 (29-70000) $999.00 1999-05 (29-70000) $999.00

Developed for our race car over two years and tested under punishing conditions, this hood was shaped by the wind. The scoops are placed at the point of lowest exterior pressure on the hood to maximize extraction of hot, high pressure underhood air and promote flow through the radiator and intercooler. There is a small lip ahead of the vent to make it even more efficient. Compatible with all our turbo systems and our shock tower brace, the hood will bolt directly in place of your stock hood and installs in minutes. Made of fibreglass and 1 lb lighter than the factory part. Grey gelcoat, painting required. Shipped by truck. 1990-97 (29-56010) $595.00

Racing Beat type 2 body kitWe don't go for the latest styling trend for body kits. We prefer a kit that works with the original lines of the car. Racing Beat did a great job of their Type 2 design. It's made of thick fibreglass and fits extremely well, although it will likely need some minor finishing before painting. nose (29-77000) $395.00 side skirts (29-77100) $272.00 rear bumper (29-77200) $369.00

Flyin' Miata oil filter relocation kit Finally, an oil filter relocation kit that can wear the Flyin' Miata name. After all, your engine survives on oil flow. Our exclusive design uses AN-8 fittings and stainless steel braided lines for maximum flow and long life. Everthing else is made of billet aluminum for a consistent, quality fit. We put a backing plate on the oil filter mount for a solid connection and used rubber isolators (not shown in picture) to prevent any noise from the oil flow. There is a fitting on the side to supply oil to a turbo or oil pressure gauge. For Miatas without ABS. 1990-05 (04-36150) $219.95

RedlineWe use Redline lubricants in all our competition and street cars. There's no better way to protect an expensive engine than with quality synthetic oils. Transmissions shift better as well.

Redline MTL synthetic gear oilA fully synthetic transmission oil. It has a very stable viscosity across a high temperature range. The friction level is relatively high friction for optimum synchro function. The magicians at Redline designed it to drop the friction as rotational speeds get closer. What does this mean for your Miata? Easy, light shifting in all weather with smooth gear engagement. The fluid even lasts for years. Two quarts required unless the shift turret oil is also changed, then three quarts are required. Change every 30k miles/50k km. One quart 1990-05 (10-26000) $7.95

Redline Differential gear oil75W90 gear oil. Stable under a high temperature range and very efficient, this ensures

as much of your power makes it to the wheels as possible. Works well in all Miata dif fer en tials including limited slip. One quart required. Change every 30k miles/50k km. One quart 1990-05 (10-26010) $7.95

Redline Synthetic motor oilFull syn thet ic oil. Thinner at low tem per a tures; holds viscosity better at higher tem per a tures than petroleum based oils. This is what we use in every car we drive, whether it’s a fun little city car, an all-out competition turbo Miata or the tow vehicle. Available in 10W30, 10W40 and 20W50. Red Line 20W50 is rec om mend ed for track use only. Four quarts required. Change every 3k miles/5k km. One quart 10W30, 10W40, 20W50 (10-16000) $7.95
